Salim Khan has vowed to keep up the fight for his intellectual rights over the Zanjeer remake. Mirror has learnt that the veteran scriptwriter, with the support of his creative partner Javed Akhtar has demanded a compensation package of Rs 6 crore from the makers of the remake – Amit Mehra and Reliance. He has sent off a strongly-worded letter to the Scriptwriter’s Association which is expected to pursue the matter in all seriousness. Sources say, the trinity of Salman, Arbaaz and Sohail are likely to add muscle to thier father’s fight.

Ever since the Zanjeer remake went to the floors, Salim-Javed have been demanding their ‘royalty.’ Amit Mehra, son of the late Prakash Mehra, the original producer, has been arguing that since the writers had already been paid once, they were not liable to be paid again. However, citing the intellectual property and copyright acts, Salim-Javed had argued that as writers, they ought to be compensated. It was not enough to merely seek their ‘blessings.’

The new version of Zanjeer, starring Ram Charan Teja and Priyanka Chopra, is nearly complete and several rounds of talks between the warring parties have failed. However recently, Salim-Javed met the producers again and suggested an ‘amicable’ end to the More >

The recently concluded Filmfare Awards saw much love and affection among the members of the fraternity. Although Priyanka Chopra did not win in the Best Actress category for her much-acclaimed performance in Barfi!, it didn’t stop her from flying into Anurag Basu’s arms and giving him a tight hug when he was announced Best Director for the same film. Talking to Mirror about the moment, Anurag said: “The hug was spontaneous. I remember reacting the same way when we saw the first trial of the film —Ranbir, Priyanka and I hugged one another in joy.”

Anurag was all praise for PeeCee: “Although the film was getting delayed, Priyanka never lost faith in me. She had in fact given her 300 per cent to this film. And when an actor works hard, it shows on the screen. Honestly, I was a little sad that she didn’t get the Best Actress award”

PeeCee eventually lost out to the formidable Vidya Balan, but not before she had her little ‘winning moment’ with the team of Barfi!

Meanwhile… PeeCee to dance with a 100 men We had told you how Priyanka Chopra had laid out her set of conditions for a special introductory song in Zanjeer. Among other things, she had put her foot down on vulgar lyrics and double entendre. Word just in, the song will feature a 100 nimble-footed men. According to sources, the song will be shot over three days starting January 27. Choreographed by Ganesh Acharya, the song has been composed by Meet Brothers. If reports More >

Inspector Vijay Khanna, dressed in a sharp black suit and Mala in seductive red captured on camera by Apoorva Lakhia as part of his ambitious Zanjeer remake. A source told Mirror, “This scene featuring Ram Charan Teja and Priyanka Chopra was shot at the Park Hotel in Hyderabad. Filming Zanjeer 2.0 is proving to be a challenge, more so as it is being shot in both Hindi and Telugu.” While Priyanka is working hard on her Telugu and Ram on his Hindi, a little game being played out on the sets has made it impossible for the actors to falter on D-day. This newspaper has learnt that there’s some heavy betting going on among the crew members as to which of the two would make a mistake on any particular day. And the going rate is Rs 500. “Neither PC or RC, as Priyanka and Ram are fondly called, have made a mistake, thanks to this game. And, they’ve been of great help to each other as well because they are in a similar situation,” the source pointed out.

A trendy twist to Sher Khan in Zanjeer remake

That Sanjay Dutt will reprise the role of Sher Khan in Apoorva Lakhia’s remake of Prakash Mehra’s 1973 blockbuster Zanjeer, had been reported by this newspaper. And now we bring you Dutt’s look in the film.

The actor sports a bright yellow pathani and a trendy French beard in the remake. By contrast, Pran, who immortalised the role in the original film, worea greenish embroidered kurta with a shimmering pink jacket. Add to that, his flaming red beard and moustache gave him a more conventional look.

Elaborating on Dutt’s appearance in the film, director Lakhia told Mirror, “From the time we decided only Sanjay could do this role, he walked onto the sets as Sher Khan. My female assistants got very excited. Navin Shetty and Aalim have worked very hard on his look. He has a huge fan following and we wanted to make him look like a modern Pathan. The last time Sanju Sir played a pathan was years back. As for Pran saab, he was a very senior and established actor when Zanjeer was being shot. It’s the same situation for Sanju today.”

Modern or not, Dutt has quite a task ahead of him as he has to fill Pran’s rather big shoes…

Priyanka Chopra’s friendship with co-star Shah Rukh Khan has been under the scanner. Their proximity had sent gossip-mongers into a frenzy, linking the two. A few B-Towners too did not refrain from taking swings at PC publicly. The two however preferred to maintain a dignified silence and not add fuel to the rumours. Their silence led to a large section of the industry and the junta to believe that the reports of their alleged affair had driven a wedge in their friendship.

However, seems like it is PC’s fans who are trying to keep her in good spirits and not let negative reports affect her. An insider reveals that Priyanka recently got a CD and a letter from a fan where the fan has recorded one of King Khan’s recent interviews, where he spoke up in defense of his Don 2 co-star. The fan has also written that how SRK has stood by her and asked her to not let any talks upset her.

A source confirms that Priyanka, who is shooting in Hyderbad for the Zanjeer remake did receive the CD and the letter, and was extremely touched by the gesture when she learnt what the CD had. “The CD recording of SRK’s interview had him talk about how sorry he felt for the way Priyanka has been treated, while also praising her for both her first single as well as her performance in Barfi!. He reportedly said: ‘Feel extremely sorry, for she wasn’t shown the respect I show her or other women… Priyanka Chopra is one of the closest friends I have and is More >

Amit Mehra has failed to pay his brothers who have terminated the remake contract

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 27, 2012)

The remake of late Prakash Mehra’s 1973 blockbuster Zanjeer being produced by his son Amit Mehra has run into hot water.

Amit, who had bought the remake rights from his brothers – the elder one Sumeet who stays in the US and the younger sibling Puneet who stays in Mumbai – has defaulted on payments. Consequently, Sumeet and Puneet have terminated the contract that gave Amit the remake rights in the first place.

The Arbitrator upheld the termination of the contract, which is why Amit panicked and approached the Bombay High Court. As per the HC order (Mirror has a copy), Amit has been given a reprieve to shoot the film. However, he cannot release the remake until further orders from the HC.

Amit maintains he is making the payments and releasing the film. Puneet said, “The matter is subjudice and I cannot elaborate on it.“ Rumour has it that Sumeet and Puneet are interested in upholding the Arbitration Order, interalia, termination of the project.

After having worked his dates out, Sanjay Dutt is back in the Bollywood remake of Zanjeer

Kunal M Shah (MID-DAY; October 25, 2012)

After much ado, Sanjay Dutt is back in Apoorva Lakhia’s Hindi remake of Zanjeer. Dutt will be playing the iconic character of Sher Khan, which was originally essayed by Pran. Earlier, the actor had opted out of the film and was replaced by Arjun Rampal.

There were also rumours doing the rounds that Sonu Sood was to play the same part but our informers tell us that he will now be doing the Telugu version of the film instead. Lakhia says, “I am so blessed that Sanju sir will be playing the role of Sher Khan while Sonu, who has a huge market and is a big star down South, will be doing it in Telugu. Ram Charan Teja is playing Amitabh Bachchan’s role in both the films.”

A source adds that Teja, who is a family friend and gym buddy of Dutt, was extremely happy to be working alongside the actor. Teja even apparently called Dutt after signing the project. Lakhia says, “Earlier Sanju sir had some date issues. We approached him with the script again and he suggested some changes that we made. Dutt’s manager and his team managed to work out the dates for us this time. We start shooting next month.”

Mahie Gill DNA

Actress Mahie Gill has her hands full right now. With back-to-back shoots, the actor has no time to relax. But she doesn’t mind as her recent venture has paid off in big way. Mahie recently did a regional film Carry On Jatta, which broke all records in North.

A source says, “The film has set a record in terms of collections, and is touted as one of the biggest films this year. It has emerged as the biggest grosser in the North this year so far. Another interesting thing is that the film is directed by Smeep Kang, who also happens to be her manager.”

Mahie is currently working on three projects — Zanjeer remake, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns and Dabangg 2. Recently, while shooting for Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns, the actress decided to get drunk to get into her character and give the perfect shot.

“At times I used to drink vodka at 8 am and get high on it. Though the weather was hot in Gujarat, the crew had a ball of a time seeing me drinking and getting high,” Mahie had said in an earlier interview.

Sanjay Dutt replaces Arjun Rampal in Zanjeer

Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 27, 2012)

Pran had immortalised the role of the crook with a golden heart, Sher Khan in Prakash Mehra’s 1973 blockbuster Zanjeer. And though initially, Sanjay Dutt was reportedly set to reprise the role in its remake, it was Arjun Rampal who bagged it. And now, back from a miraculous physical makeover, Dutt is back in his pal Apoorva Lakhia’s film.

Mirror found out that on Saturday afternoon, Arjun opted out of the project. “Yes unfortunately I am opting out of Zanjeer. The dates were clashing with Nikhil Advani’s film. It was getting too cut-to-cut for me. The only window I had this year for Zanjeer was in July. But that got pushed ahead. Now it would be unfair of me to ask them to wait until next year for my dates. Sher Khan is an iconic character. Any actor would be happy to play him,” the actor told us.

Needless to say, the role went back to Dutt – the first choice for Sher Khan.

According to a source close to the project, the neo Sher Khan will be a lot different from the character reprised by Pran in 1973. “This Zanjeer needs two well-built guys. The confrontation between Vijay and Sher Khan in the original Zanjeer was aggressive and violent but the brawn quotient was missing. Pran saab was obviously not expected to fight bare-backed and Bachchan Saab never took off his shirt. This time Ram Charan Teja and his on-screen Sher Khan slug it out bare-torsoed. That’s why Arjun Rampal with his lithe build was selected. Sanjay Dutt More >

Mahie Gill gets hooked to a Thai dish

While shooting in Bangkok for ‘Zanjeer’ remake, Mahie Gill developed a strange fetish

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; July 17, 2012)

Ram Charan Teja, Prakash Raj and Mahie Gill were recently shooting in Thailand for Apoorva Lakhia’s remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s 1970s cop film. The cast and crew seemed to have had a particularly good time, savouring the local delicacies when not shooting.

Says a unit source, “The entire unit used to go out for dinner every single day. They would try the local cuisine at various restaurants after pack up. But one dish that would invariably find its place on the table was Khao Phad Kai Dow — egg-fried rice done the Thai way. Mahie got hooked on to the dish and would order it everyday without fail.”

Adds the source, “She would force director Apoorva Lakhia and producer Amit Mehra to eat it too everyday. Though there would be more exotic stuff available, Mahie would still insist on ordering her favorite dish!”

Mahie informs, “I love Thai food and developed a taste for this dish. Apoorva started teasing me as the brand ambassador of Thailand’s egg fried rice. He said that I should promote the dish in India as well.” Mahie, who is reprising Bindu’s iconic Mona Darling act in the remake, made sure that every unit member had at least a few spoons of it every night!
