‘Everything virginal is a welcome change!’
0Karan Johar presents a magical rom-com this July
Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; June 21, 2010)
The atmosphere in movie mogul Karan Johar’s office is infectious. Unmindful of the cloud burst that has taken Mumbai by siege, young actors, technicians and media assistants sassily dressed in shorts and tube tops move around at breakneck speed putting together Dharma Productions’ I Hate Luv Storys promotion campaign. This film is slated for a July 2 release worldwide. Everyone is excited because IHLS is a sweet (not syrupy) romantic comedy that brings together several first time combinations. “Anything virginal is usually a welcome change,’’ says one bright yuppie assistant.
Lead actor Imran Khan, who is dressed in a happy red T-shirt, says, “Karan spoils his actors. And though this is my first film with him, I never really felt that way. I’m now looking forward to doing many more films with him.’’ About his association with director Punit Malhotra, Imran says, “He’s young, has a terrific sense of humour and well through the making of the film, Punit and I were creatively on the same page.’’
Punit butts in to say, “Imran made me chase him a lot before he actually agreed to be a part of the film. However, once he was on board, Sonam and he were a dream team. They never made me feel like a debutant.’’ The young director is also impressed with Karan who gave him the budget he needed for his endeavour, but never interfered with any other More >
Imran suggested changes to make IHLS ‘tighter’
0By Joginder Tuteja, June 12, 2010 – 12:30 IST
Over the decades, one has heard of scripts being changed mid way into the making of the film. Many of them have failed once the changes started taking place haphazardly. On the other hand quite a few succeeded when better creativity prevailed. While this is something which is not quite acknowledged by all, it’s a known fact that a bound script doesn’t always stay to be on to bound the same way before arriving on the sets.
Anything wrong with that? No, none at all as long as a script change happens before everything is locked (including cast, dates, locations, final deadline for the shoot, release date etc.). All is well as long as the change happens for the better. Yes, it may involve some heartburn for a writer because his vision may find some tangents from others (read: producer, director, actor) involved. However, as is the case with any creative journey, filmmaking too follows it’s soon; something that debutant filmmaker Punit Malhotra realised in case of I Hate Luv Storys.
Says Imran who admits that he wasn’t sold with the entire idea of I Hate LUV Storys in the very first listening, “I had a lot of issues with the script and I gave Punit a long laundry list. I told him, yeh problem hai, yahan isko aise theek karna hai, is cheez ko thoda badlo etc. etc.”
“I actually ‘pakaoed’ him for a long time”, he adds with a laugh.
This is where Punit had to go back to the drawing board as Imran wanted to be More >
SRK takes control after Bobby Chawla’s hospitalization
0// // // The past few days have made it amply evident that Shah Rukh Khan believes that the show must go on. Despite being very upset after his close associate, Red Chillies CEO Bobby Chawla (Juhi Chawla’s brother), was admitted to a suburban hospital on April 4 after suffering a brain hemorrhage, SRK has decided to take care of every little thing in his production house.
Since Bobby Chawla’s hospitalisation has thrown the entire shooting schedule of Ra.One in a complete mess, Shah Rukh has decided to lead from the front to ensure that everything is quickly put back on track.
“A few of Bobby Chawla’s duties have been taken up by Ra.One director Anubhav Sinha too, but it is Shah Rukh who is now holding the reins of Ra.One,” says a source close to the film.
Commenting on what exactly Shah Rukh is doing to get things back on track, the source says that Shah Rukh has taken up all duties which were earlier being handled by Bobby Chawla.
“SRK is mainly taking care of four jobs: calling up every actor of Ra.One and coordinating their dates, discussing their remuneration, making sure that they get their payments on time and talking to technicians (including those coming from abroad) for every single production detail, including the More >
Did SRK’s remark cross legal line?
0Kartikeya | TNN (THE TIMES OF INDIA; February 12, 2010)
Mumbai: Did Shah Rukh Khan abuse his freedom of speech and expression when he regretted the Pakistani cricketers’ exclusion from the IPL? Legal experts said like all other freedoms guaranteed by law, even the freedom to express an opinion was bound by reasonable restrictions.
Khan could have abused the freedom of speech and expression he has been guaranteed under the Indian law only if he had said something that compromised the security of the state, affected India’s relations with a foreign country, was contemptuous of a court of law or directly created public disorder, said legal experts.
Advocate Y P Singh said Khan’s statements did not appear to cross any line and anyone familiar with the constitutional law would have known that the current fuss was absolutely unnecessary. What the actor expressed while speaking about Pakistani cricketers in the IPL was an opinion, and he had exercised a fundamental freedom guaranteed to him by one of the most sacrosanct parts of the Indian Constitution.
Freedom of speech and expression written under Article 19 (1) (a) has been fiercely defended at various times by the Supreme Court in the last 60 years of our republic. Two decades ago in 1989, the Supreme Court said in the Rangarajan vs P Jagjivan Ram case that “free debate’’ and “open discussion’’ were an “integral part of a democracy’’. Even before that, in a 1950 More >
Will it be Scarlett or Anne for John ?
0Bollywood babes better watch out, as apna hunk John Abraham is all set to sizzle alongside a Hollywood hottie on the big screen. It could just be the sexy Scarlett Johansson or the gorgeous Anne Hathaway! That’s the big plan kept under wraps for John’s film that will be directed by Shirish Kunder. The film titled Alien Sahib will be produced jointly by Shirish Kunder and Farah Khan along with John himself, and will be shot on an international level.
A source reveals, “Shirish is already in talks with Hollywood A-list stars like Scarlett and Anne and is flying down to Los Angeles finalise the deal. Shirish and John are doing everything possible to ensure that the movie is as perfect as it was conceptualised.” Shirish, who admits that talks are underway, says that they are also scouting for another Hollywood actor for the villain’s role. “The story has a tremendous intentional appeal. The female protagonist is a foreign national so we decided to cast a Hollywood actress for it. Today, actors abroad are aware of the work we do and are open to working in films here. We have the means and we are doing what’s best for the film,” says the filmmaker. John was noticed by the audience on the international circuit when his movie Water was screened at various film festivals across the More >

After Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, one of the biggest blockbusters of all-time, Anushka is romancing Shahid Kapoor in Parmeet Sethi’s untitled venture. In December, she will team up with super-hottie Akshay Kumar in Nikhil Advani’s Patiala House. “I loved the script the moment I heard it,’’ she confesses. “However, I didn’t want to do anything impulsive. So I slept over it for a day and went back to Nikhil telling him I was most certainly on for the project,’’ says the heroine, who stands almost six feet tall. Anushka adds, “I have never met Akshay Kumar in my life and I’m going to be romancing him in my next project. I can’t tell you how excited I am. First I got to romance Shah Rukh, then Shahid and now Akshay. It is as if I’m walking on a cloud.’’
Has she talked to her godfather Aditya Chopra about this film? “Adi would hate it if I called him my mentor or godfather,’’ she says. “He and I are not friends. He is someone I hold in high regard.
