MUMBAI MIRROR RUMOUR: Saif wants Bebo to lose still more weight

By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 19, 2010)

After all that heat and dust about Kareena Kapoor’s size zero frame, most of her fans – and even the actress herself – seem to agree that a few curves definitely don’t hurt. But unfortunately, no one seems to have asked beau Saif Ali Khan.

Apparently the Chote Nawab strongly subscribes to leaner-the-better school of thought. And let’s not forget, the romance between Bebo and Saif had blossomed on the sets of Tashan, when she was almost threatening to slip from size zero to practically negative territory.

So convinced is Saif that his girlfriend’s slimmer version was better, he’s not refraining from pressing his case with Kareena. Recently, both stars were present to perform at Chitrakoot Grounds in Andheri. “They had separate items. First Saif performed and then it was Kareena’s turn. But Saif stayed backstage all through Kareena’s dance.

Immediately after, as she was making her way backstage, Saif got up to applaud her. But as the couple made their way out together, he couldn’t resist telling her, “I think you need to lose some weight, yaar.”

It may be a private joke between the couple, because Kareena seemed to take it pretty sportingly. Even when Mumbai Mirror called up to ask what exactly had transpired that day, Bebo countered, “I am happy to have gained a bit. Don’t you think I needed to?”

Yes. But Saif Ali Khan remained unavailable for comment.

Agent Vinod's budget slashed?

Buzz is that the budget of Agent Vinod has been slashed from Rs 65 crore to Rs 40 crore. Are the makers playing safe or is there more to it? By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 03, 2009)

Considering the fate of some of the recent films bombing at the box-office and the aftereffects of recession, corporate are entirely rethinking their film financing budgets. Apparently, this is why Eros International, the financers of Agent Vinod starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, has considerably slashed the film’s budget.

The buzz in trade circles, based on a conversation overheard between a leading producer and a couple of distributors is that Eros International is renegotiating their deal with Illuminati Films, producers of Agent Vinod. The budget of the film has been brought down considerably from Rs 65 crore to Rs 40 crore. Illuminati Films is co-owned by Saif Ali Khan and Dinesh Vijan.

Agent Vinod is a spy thriller with Saif and Kareena playing undercover agents. In fact, buzz is that Kareena plays a full-on action star on the same lines as Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider.

In today’s time, when having a big star in one’s film does not guarantee money recovery, it is not surprising that Eros is having second thoughts about the budget of the film. Apparently, the dismal performance of the recent Saif-Kareena starrer Kurbaan at the box-office has also played a big role in Eros deciding to cut costs. Incidentally, this is the third time recently More >

I don’t know what the trade pundits have to say about Karan Johar’s Kurbaan, but Saif Ali Khan, whose first film this is opposite Kareena

Kapoor, is very confident about the November 20 release.

MARK MANUEL (Bombay Times; November 5, 2009)

“I’ve a good feeling about it,” he told me. We were talking on the phone because he’s here, there and everywhere promoting the film, and just not available in Mumbai.

Tuesday he was in Delhi, yesterday London, next Dubai. “There’s more to life than shooting,” he sighed. In the background, I could hear Kareena prompting his replies. They’re not doing all the promotions together, because she’s busy making Stepmom with Karan at the same time, and Saif… well, after this he swore he’s taking a month off in December to “train and get into serious shape” before they start shooting for his home production Agent Vinod. His idea of training is not the same as Aamir’s or, say, Salman’s. “I won’t get a funda trainer… but just kill myself in the gym. It’ll be a combo of yoga and weights. You don’t need a NASA scientist to get a great body,” he chortled.

He’s worked with Karan before in Kal Ho Na Ho, but that time, the filmmaker was completely involved in every aspect of the film. This time, Karan has left it to director Rensil D’Silva. “So the film’s got its own flavour,” explained Saif, “Rensil has brought his ad world sensibilities to Kurbaan, and this is not a filmi kind of movie… it’s a love story and thriller More >

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL: (From top) Stills from Luck By Chance, Kaminey, Love Aaj Kal

Heroines today are much more comfortable with their sexuality than ever before

DEEPALI DHINGRA Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; September 29, 2009)

Did you cringe with discomfort when a seemingly innocent child woman Isha Sherwani seduced Farhan Akhtar into bed in Luck By Chance? Or, more recently, when a salwar kameez-clad Priyanka Chopra managed to convince a reluctant Shahid Kapoor to have sex with her in Kaminey, by telling him that she knows ‘homescience’ and that it’s ‘safe to do it’? More likely than not, you smiled at their boldness and prepared for more to come. Seduction was a game played by vamps in Bollywood in the 70s and 80s. Much later, lead actresses like Bipasha Basu and Priyanka Chopra were sexually charged in Jism and Aitraaz respectively. But even then, they were the ‘bad girls’. Well, times have changed — even the ‘good’ girls are taking a turn for the ‘bad’ and the audiences are lapping it up!

Watch newcomer Mahie Gill throwing herself in full abandon at Abhay Deol in a mustard field in Dev. D and you’ll know what we’re talking about. Trade analyst Komal Nahta says he isn’t surprised at this change. “Films, after all, are a reflection of today. Girls are proposing to guys, they are using seduction as a tool even in real life. The major composition of the audience comprises youth, so they have to show what the young generation identifies with,” he says. So More >

BOLLYWOOD HAS NEVER BEEN SO PREDICTABLE!

I still can’t believe this! The predictions which I made 8 weeks back have proved to be almost true! In my talk no. 53, I had made a prediction of 8 yet-to-be-released Hindi films and guess what, 7 of them have proved to be completely right!

According to my predictions, New York, Kambakkht Ishq and Love Aaj Kal would be successful at the BO. Barring Kambakkht Ishq, New York became a hit while Love Aaj Kal (released last Friday) took a fabulous opening and may soon become the biggest hit of 2009 so far! Then, I had guessed that Paying Guests, Let’s Dance, Runway and Short Kut would flop commercially and all these film did indeed bit the dust! Adhyayan Suman starrer Jashnn would be disastrous, according to my guess, and the same happened!

The only film for which my prediction didn’t hit the mark was Kambakkht Ishq (KI). I had a feeling that the film would turn out to be great as it has come from the stable of producer Sajid Nadiadwala, who has given some of the best entertainers in the past. His films have been entertaining, interesting and have suited the taste of the moviegoers in general. However, KI failed to entertain many. Even though it took a great opening, the mixed response (mostly negative) took a toll in its collections. It has managed to be above-average. So I get 7 on 8 right which is not bad, I guess! ——————————————- SAIF-NEXT SUPERSTAR?

NEW YORK SHINES AND HOW!!

The weekend gone by was quite delightful! Who knew Friday’s release New York would do such a fantabulous job at the BO? I was of the opinion that the film may not take a huge opening considering the theme of the film and that it would attract people only from the 2nd day onwards. But the film managed to embark on a 65%+ opening on Friday which is a great feat! What made my smile wide was the almost 100% occupancy throughout the country on Sunday! In fact, I went for an early morning show of New York on Sunday in a multiplex and its tickets were sold out by Saturday afternoon! Where do you get to see anything like this nowadays?!

New York is a feather in the caps of all its lead actors, its director (Kabir Khan) and most importantly, for its producers, Yash Raj Films (YRF)! The production house was criticized and made fun of after it delivered string of flops like Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Aaja Nachle, Tashan, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic etc. But the success of SRK-starrer Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and now New York has restored back its prestige.

However, it is important that the Chopras now doesnt let this respect slip off like before. They’ll have to be more careful in choosing the scripts. Also, they should promote their films aggressively which they often don’t do. And because of this, many of their films had failed (Classic example is Roadside Romeo). However, they did well publicize New York, chiefly because they started the promotion More >

Kareena Kapoor fumes on 'nude' query

K A R E E N A  K A P O O R

New Delhi media was in for a shock as Kareena Kapoor staged a walk out of a press conference in the city where she was present to promote her upcoming film Kambakkht Ishq. Visibly upset and fuming with anger, she marched towards her suite when a female reporter questioned her if she would be willing to go totally nude for camera if the script demanded so.

Informs an onlooker who was present at the venue, “The question shocked her. Just a few minutes back, she had patiently handled queries regarding her professional life. She had also commented around wearing a bikini in Tashan and now Kambakkht Ishq mainly because the ‘script demanded it’. Though averse to doing so in future projects, she admitted that she would keep the subject and story in mind and would do ‘anything’ that is required by the script.”

Though it was a diplomatic stand on affairs, things went a little too far when an over zealous reported popped the question – ‘Would you mind going nude for a role?’ “This was it”, adds the source, “Kareena lost her cool at that very moment and rather than choosing to blast the reporter and create a scene, she simply aborted her stay at the press conference. The flabbergasted reporter didn’t know what hit her. The event coordinator too felt disgusted about the entire incident and found himself in trouble as this situation was totally unforeseen.”

The source continues, “There were problems for More >

Movie Review: 8×10 TASVEER by FENIL SETA

Suspense thrillers have always been a hot favourite for filmmakers across the world. If executed well, it can work wonders provided it has a nice plot. But if the filmmaker doesn’t succeed in doing justice, the film fails miserably. 8×10 Tasveer falls in between the two-while some of the sequences are interesting, some of the portions towards the end fails to work and in fact, goes above the head!

The story of the movie: Jai Puri (Akshay Kumar) works as a forest ranger in EPS (Environmental Protection Services). He has a supernatural power-he can see the past of a person through his photograph. His father Jatin Puri (Benjamin Gilani) dies in an accident in his private boat. Jai never appreciated his father’s way of running his business and therefore stayed separately with his girlfriend Sheela (Ayesha Takia). Meeting a private detective Habibulla Pasha aka Happi (Javed Jaaferi), Jai realizes that his father’s death was not an accident-it was a planned murder. All those present in the boat during the accident were the suspects which include Jai’s mother Savitri (Sharmila Tagore), Lawyer Anil Sharma (Girish Karnad), Jatin’s brother Sundar (Anant Mahadevan) and Adit (Rushad Rana). Jai then decides to use his supernatural powers to get to the bottom of this incident and comes up with startling facts!

The beginning portions were strictly okay. It is also only after Jaaved Jaaferi’s entry that things turn interesting in the film. The scenes where Jai goes into More >
