In 15 years, haven’t encountered a casting couch-Raakesh Agarvwal
0Bollywood doesn’t get the industry, rues designer Raakesh Agarvwal, telling the real drugs-sex-kindness story
Mitali Parekh (MID-DAY; August 19, 2012)
There would be no reason to talk to fashion designer Raakesh Agarvwal if it weren’t for his painfully honest confessional in the recently released book, Powder Room. Written by Shefalee Vasudev, it dissects the fashion industry and labels the organs for the reader to enjoy. Agarvwal’s story rides against the flamboyance, warped genius and self-assurance we project on designers. His honest unburdening of what it was like to grow up in a traditional Marwari family, and dive into a pool of excesses makes you suspicious of the motive.
“I have always been honest, and Shefalee is a friend,” says Agarvwal, “I wanted to reveal what the business is really like; not what Madhur Bhandarkar thinks it’s like. When I speak to students, I tell them that I have worked in the industry for 15 years but have yet to see the glamour. I haven’t encountered a casting couch. If we want to sleep around, we do it with whoever catches our eye — it doesn’t have to be with a model or an assistant. We are not all junkies who sleep around, yaar.”
Bhandarkar’s Fashion comes up often in book. It is widely panned in the industry as an under-researched, unrealistically grim portrayal. Through Powder Room, models talk about the practicalities of professionalism necessary to keep landing work.
Agarvwal echoes this. He yanked himself out of More >

Here’s a freewheeling chat with the bride-to-be.
How did you meet Charan? We were introduced through common friends. I was in the US studying, and we would meet when I would come to India for vacations. Over time, we become friends. I feel like I’ve known him from many janams, like 400 years, and the people of the state believe it too, just like in his movie Magadheera!
Tell us about the wedding proposal. He proposed to me on my birthday (July 20) last year. I love surprises, and that was the best one. He surprises me on my birthday every year. I am waiting to see what he has in store for me this year!

The wedding was conducted in traditional Punjabi style and the whole day was marked by a series of rituals. After seeking the blessings of the Almighty, the ‘haldi‘ ceremony began which is considered an auspicious ritual as per Indian tradition.
Here, Vivek’s father Suresh Oberoi and sister Meghna are seen adjusting the turban on Vivek’s head during the ‘sehra bandhi‘ ceremony.
Vivek was even gifted a sword embellished with stones by Priyanka’s family as is the tradition.
Even though the wedding was attended by over 2000 guests, very few Bollywood stars such as Sushmita Sen, Poonam Dhillon etc. were seen. Vivek’s friends and colleagues from the film fraternity will in all probability be seen at the wedding reception to be held tomorrow (Sunday) at a five-star hotel in Mumbai.

Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; October 28, 2010)
On Tuesday, 28-year-old Priyanka Alva kept her first karva chauth for the Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi. At 6.10 p.m, Vivek told BT from Bangalore, “I’m in the karva chauth puja. The shaadi, on Friday, is just three days away and I’m delirious.”
Priyanka is the daughter of the late Janta Dal politician from Karnataka, Jeevraj Alva, and Nandini Alva. She is a business graduate from London, a keen social activist and a lover of the arts. Both Priyanka and Vivek are Kshatriyas and carrying a sword on the wedding day is mandatory. Priyanka sourced out a special sword for her husband-to-be. It is a heavy one for which designer Tarun Tahiliani is crafting an embroidered sheath with precious stones. Says Tarun, “The idea is to make Vivek look like a maharaja.”
Vivek’s outfit for the baraat will be a deep maroon heavy brocade affair with some royal imagery. Beneath it, the actor will wear an A-line kurta of the finest material that will help him move easily as he climbs the mare (ghodi) and jumps down from it. Tarun, who is also making the wedding outfit for the bride, says, “Priyanka, since she is marrying a Punjabi, will wear a lehenga with 14 different colours on the panels; almost like a Persian carpet.
