Bollywood doesn’t get the industry, rues designer Raakesh Agarvwal, telling the real drugs-sex-kindness story
Mitali Parekh (MID-DAY; August 19, 2012)
There would be no reason to talk to fashion designer Raakesh Agarvwal if it weren’t for his painfully honest confessional in the recently released book, Powder Room. Written by Shefalee Vasudev, it dissects the fashion industry and labels the organs for the reader to enjoy. Agarvwal’s story rides against the flamboyance, warped genius and self-assurance we project on designers. His honest unburdening of what it was like to grow up in a traditional Marwari family, and dive into a pool of excesses makes you suspicious of the motive.
“I have always been honest, and Shefalee is a friend,” says Agarvwal, “I wanted to reveal what the business is really like; not what Madhur Bhandarkar thinks it’s like. When I speak to students, I tell them that I have worked in the industry for 15 years but have yet to see the glamour. I haven’t encountered a casting couch. If we want to sleep around, we do it with whoever catches our eye — it doesn’t have to be with a model or an assistant. We are not all junkies who sleep around, yaar.”
Bhandarkar’s Fashion comes up often in book. It is widely panned in the industry as an under-researched, unrealistically grim portrayal. Through Powder Room, models talk about the practicalities of professionalism necessary to keep landing work.
Agarvwal echoes this. He yanked himself out of More >
Upasana Kamineni dishes on her wedding to Ram Charan Teja in an exclusive chat with BT
Tushar Joshi (BOMBAY TIMES; June 10, 2012)
South star Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan Teja rose to fame with Magadheera in 2009. The 27-year-old, who will soon make his B-Town debut with the Zanjeer remake, is tying the knot with fiancée Upasana Kamineni (granddaughter of Prathap Reddy, the MD of one of the country’s leading pharma companies) on June 14. They got engaged in a private ceremony on December 1 last year, but the wedding promises to be a grand one with top politicians, business barons, actors and socialites from all over the world descending in Hyderabad. Here’s a freewheeling chat with the bride-to-be.
How did you meet Charan? We were introduced through common friends. I was in the US studying, and we would meet when I would come to India for vacations. Over time, we become friends. I feel like I’ve known him from many janams, like 400 years, and the people of the state believe it too, just like in his movie Magadheera!
Tell us about the wedding proposal. He proposed to me on my birthday (July 20) last year. I love surprises, and that was the best one. He surprises me on my birthday every year. I am waiting to see what he has in store for me this year!
How elaborate are the wedding preparations? Our family members are looking after all the details. The guest list is huge, as there are people travelling from all over the world to attend the wedding. I am quite hands-on and More >
By Sneha Mahadevan (DNA; May 10, 2012)Arjun Rampal with wife Mehr
Joining the long list of names from B-Town to be in the elite list of Cannes Film Festival invitees is actor Arjun Rampal. The actor, who will make his debut on the red carpet, is all set to sashay down with wife and former supermodel, Mehr at the French Riviera.
Arjun, who is on a short break from his hectic shooting schedule in Madhya Pradesh for Prakash Jha’s Chakravyuh, is currently in Mumbai, planning out the intricacies of his trip, where he’ll be representating a brand he endorses. He insisted that he will walk the red carpet only if wife, former supermodel Mehr accompanies him. “It was decided right from day one that Mehr will walk the red carpet with me. She had to. She will make me look good amidst people there,” says Arjun.
Arjun was earlier slated to walk on the opening night on May 16, but the date clashed with his shooting schedules. So he reworked his schedule at Cannes and will now be walking on the closing night on the 27. About the visit, the actor says, “It is a very big honour for me to attend the Cannes Film Festival. I’ll be representing my brand with whom Ihave a very strong association.” He adds that he’s also there to largely increase knowledge and encourage global connections about cinema. “I’ll be there to create a sense of brotherhood, a creative brotherhood, where people from different lines of cinema, meet and interact. I am most excited about representing our film More >

Aishwarya Rai walked on it, so did Nandita Das, Sonam Kapoor, Freida Pinto and Mallika Sherawat too followed. But this year, the French Riviera is all set to welcome yet another Bollywood celebrity. Ask a hundred people to describe her and they’ll tell you she is sexy, ambitious, entertaining and hot, and come May 11, she’ll be hot for a different reason. Minissha Lamba will be the Bollywood face at this year’s prestigious 64th Annual Cannes Film Festival as far as female celebrities are concerned. The reason? Well, she’s specially invited to attend the world premiere of Woody Allen’s Midnight In Paris that opens the festival. So don’t be surprised if you are trying to call Miss Lamba and she doesn’t answer or even bother to reply to your text. You can bet she is shedding a few kilos on the treadmill ever since her invite has arrived. The persona she has created and the way she has seemed to process her own fame hints at an underlying element of self-preservation at work. Minissha says shocking things: courtesy Twitter. She posts sexy pictures: courtesy Facebook. She looks good on film. But she doesn’t try to pull at your heartstrings by pretending to bare her soul. She doesn’t attempt to demystify herself through over explanation. She doesn’t try to really prove anything to you. She just gives you what she thinks you want and keeps the important stuff for herself. No wonder she gave me her quick take on that More >

The ‘Prince Charming’ of Bollywood, Vivek Oberoi finally tied the knot yesterday to Priyanka Alva at a glittering ceremony held in Priyanka’s hometown Bengaluru. Both Vivek and Priyanka looked resplendent in designer Tarun Tahiliani’s creation. We bring you a few snapshots of the high profile wedding.
The wedding was conducted in traditional Punjabi style and the whole day was marked by a series of rituals. After seeking the blessings of the Almighty, the ‘haldi‘ ceremony began which is considered an auspicious ritual as per Indian tradition.
Here, Vivek’s father Suresh Oberoi and sister Meghna are seen adjusting the turban on Vivek’s head during the ‘sehra bandhi‘ ceremony.
Vivek was even gifted a sword embellished with stones by Priyanka’s family as is the tradition.
Even though the wedding was attended by over 2000 guests, very few Bollywood stars such as Sushmita Sen, Poonam Dhillon etc. were seen. Vivek’s friends and colleagues from the film fraternity will in all probability be seen at the wedding reception to be held tomorrow (Sunday) at a five-star hotel in Mumbai.
WEDDING BELLS: Vivek Oberoi and Priyanka Alva
Vivek Oberoi is all set to marry Priyanka Alva in Bangalore on Friday…
Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; October 28, 2010)
On Tuesday, 28-year-old Priyanka Alva kept her first karva chauth for the Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi. At 6.10 p.m, Vivek told BT from Bangalore, “I’m in the karva chauth puja. The shaadi, on Friday, is just three days away and I’m delirious.”
Priyanka is the daughter of the late Janta Dal politician from Karnataka, Jeevraj Alva, and Nandini Alva. She is a business graduate from London, a keen social activist and a lover of the arts. Both Priyanka and Vivek are Kshatriyas and carrying a sword on the wedding day is mandatory. Priyanka sourced out a special sword for her husband-to-be. It is a heavy one for which designer Tarun Tahiliani is crafting an embroidered sheath with precious stones. Says Tarun, “The idea is to make Vivek look like a maharaja.”
Vivek’s outfit for the baraat will be a deep maroon heavy brocade affair with some royal imagery. Beneath it, the actor will wear an A-line kurta of the finest material that will help him move easily as he climbs the mare (ghodi) and jumps down from it. Tarun, who is also making the wedding outfit for the bride, says, “Priyanka, since she is marrying a Punjabi, will wear a lehenga with 14 different colours on the panels; almost like a Persian carpet. The lehenga that will have a peacock motif will be short in the More >
By Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 05, 2009)Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra will tie the knot on November 22. The shaadi will take place in the afternoon at Shilpa’s friend-cum-business partner Kiran Bawa’s bungalow in Khandala.
Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty
Our source reveals, “The marriage will be in the typical Punjabi style, with Raj bringing in the baraat in a chariot. The marriage will be followed by a grand reception in Mumbai on Nov 24.”
Confirming the news, Kiran says, “I’m in Montreal right now, but I’m coming back soon. I believe Tarun Tahiliani is designing the lehenga which Shilpa will wear during her pheras. We’re decorating my Khandala place too. Shilpa and I go back a long way, we’ve known each other since 17 years. Her mother (Sunanda), ties a rakhi to my father. We’re very happy and looking forward to the occasion.”
Will sister Shamita Shetty remain trapped in the Bigg Boss house and miss the wedding, we wonder.
