B-Towners react to Mallika’s statements asking her to leave the country if it depresses her so much, and settle abroad )PS: Raakhee suggests a nudist colony for Ms Sherawat)

Subhash K Jha (DNA; May 30, 2013)

Pooja Bhatt It is said that we do not see the world as it is, but as we are. While there are pockets of India that are way more regressive than even Afghanistan, there is another India that is way more progressive than Europe or America. India is too complex a nation to be reduced to a blurb. At the same time it is also a nation that permits everyone to have an opinion, no matter how banal or profound.

Divya Dutta Wonder why she said what she did! Isn’t she undermining all the Indian women achievers who’ve been given great opportunities by this country? She got her fame here. Women in this country are on par with their sisters in any part of the world.

Raakhee Gulzar Poor thing. She tried every trick, yet made no impact. If she says we’re regressive then she must leave, find herself a more suitable place of her choice. Maybe a nudist’s colony?

Amrita Puri The context in which Mallika spoke was ridiculous. She made it sound like she is the only progressive actor in this country. It’s a shame that she was given a platform where she presented such a false and unintelligent point of view.

Shibani Kashyap She shouldn’t be talking against India. It shows her lack of empathy with her roots and an absence of loyalty to the country that has given her name, fame and stardom. More >

Busy Vivek Oberoi dumps Dekh Indian Circus

Vivek Oberoi agreed to be co-producer of a film whose subject he found appealing but now has no time for it

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; June 9, 2012)

Vivek Oberoi who had proclaimed himself to be producer of Mangesh Hadawale’s film Dekh Indian Circus about the aspirations of rural India, has apparently disassociated himself with the project. The film has Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Tannishta Chatterjee in the cast. It had premiered at the Busan Film Festival in Korea in November after which VO had espoused that he would promote it. The film has been produced by Mahaveer Jain, Anil Lad and Chirag Shah.

Says Mahavir, “As I know Vivek and after seeing what the film was about he agreed to be a co-producer of the project. He came on board only after the film was complete. At that time he was free and so did not mind being present for the film’s events. But when he started shooting, he told us to relieve him from the project. We now have Imtiaz Ali as presenter of the film.”

When the producers had met Ali and showed him the film, he was delighted with it and felt the movie should reach a maximum number of people, as it’s an entertaining and meaningful cinematic work. He thus came on board to promote and present it.

Says Vivek’s spokesperson, “He is still the producer of Dekh Indian Circus. As he has been busy of late he has not had time. He was earlier shooting for KLPD with Mallika Sherawat. He is presently in Singapore for IIFA Awards and will resume shooting in Rajasthan for Soham More >

Abhay Deol recounts his experience of hobnobbing with the finest film talent at the 60th Berlin Film Festival

It was a rather humbling experience to be part of the 60th Berlin International Film Festival, where my film Road, Movie produced by Indian Films opened the Generation 14 plus, a competitive section.

My entire team, director Dev Benegal, Satish Kaushik, Tannishta Chatterjee and I witnessed an extraordinary response from the German audience, who were standing and clapping for us despite the biting cold.

All tickets were sold out with no room left even to stand. Another heartening fact was that the audience couldn’t stop laughing all through the 86 minutes of the film. It was followed by a five-minute standing ovation when the film ended, which was a rather unusual and overwhelming response by the Germans to our film.

I have done some really challenging films in the past and Road, Movie was no different. We endured the scorching heat of Rajasthan and in Berlin we are battling with the bitter cold but the audience reaction made up for all the hardships and have also reinforced our belief in making Road, Movie.

The ability of the film to connect with the audience world over regardless of its Hindi language only proves the universal theme of the film.
