Bollywood mourns at Rajesh Khanna’s chautha

Almost the entire film industry attended Rajesh Khanna’s Chautha ceremony held at Mumbai’s Taj Lands End on Saturday, July 21, 2012.
Pictures of the superstar brought back warm memories as colleagues, friends and family reminisced about the times spent with the actor and how he had touched their lives in different ways.
Singer Shubha Mudgal rendered a beautiful prayer song as a mark of respect for the late actor. After which, Khanna’s grandson Aarav thanked her, going on to present a special video to all those gathered. Edited by Akshay Kumar, the video featured excerpts of various interviews with the late actor in them.
Aamir and Kiran Rao, and Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan were among those who came in quite early. The Kapoor clan was in full attendance, including Rishi and Neetu Singh, son Ranbir Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor and Shweta Nanda along with her mother-in-law. Rakesh Roshan came, and so did Hrithik and Susanne Roshan.
Among the superstar’s contemporaries who were present at the ceremony were Prem Chopra, Jeetendra, Asrani, Reena Roy, Bindu and music composer Anandji to name a few. Shashi Kapoor, who had undergone a cataract operation just the day before, came in a wheelchair to pay his last respects.
Yash Chopra, who was partnered by Khanna, when he first decided to become an independent producer and start his own banner Yash Raj Films, looked emotional.

Aamir, with wife Kiran in tow, was the first one to reach the venue, Taj Land’s End in Bandra, to ensure that he personally welcomed each and every guest.
Looking resplendent in a red lehenga, bride Avantika was smiling from ear to ear and the groom Imran seemed a bit shy.
But there was no denying that this was the bash to announce both, Imran Khan’s wedding and Aamir’s clout: Bollywood aristocracy, top bureaucrats, society divas, stockbrokers, sports personalities, industrialists.
The early birds were Jackie Shroff, Sarika, Anupam Kher, Piyush Pandey, Asha Parekh and Faisal Khan.
Black was the colour of the Khan males. Seems Aamir, Imran and Faisal had planned that they would all wear black.
A roar went up on the red carpet outside as master blaster Sachin Tendulkar was seen walking in with Yuvraj Singh.
What made the party truly a who’s who was how Bollywood was one segment of the glamour.
While the Kapoor clan was there in hordes, you also had Mukesh Ambani, Anand Mahindra, Kumarmangalam Birla and the Godrejes.
The party was not short of any political drama. Just as Uddhav Thackeray made his entry, Raj Thackeray made his exit.

Aamir Khan has done something that will certainly raise a lot of eyebrows.
He is extremely fond of his bhanja, Imran Khan, for whom he is hosting a wedding reception party at Taj Land’s End on February 5.
The party will be special for how many warring factions will be under one roof though.
Aamir has personally invited sibling rivals Mukesh and Anil Ambani. If that is not enough, he has personally invited Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan; everyone knows the equation between these two.
A source says, “Aamir has always wanted Salman and Shah Rukh to patch up. If you recall, he spent the entire night shuttling between Mannat (SRK’s residence) and Galaxy (Salman’s residence) when their fight took place at Katrina Kaif’s birthday party two years ago.
This could be just the occasion he might go the extra mile and make them warm up to one another.”
And what if either of them don’t attend or come at different timings? “How can that be ascertained now?” said the source. “Of course, most people from the industry have been invited.
Add this to Imran and Avantika’s close family members and the guest list looks rather impressive.”

Neha Oberoi to tie the knot

Dharam Oberoi’s (CEO of Sanjay Dutt Productions) daughter, Neha Oberoi, is getting married on December 14, to a diamond merchant Vishal Shah. The wedding party is at Taj Land’s End (Bandra).
The groom to be, Vishal Shah, belongs to a diamond trading family. Neha and Vishal have been dating since four-and-half years, and now they have decided to get married.

At present, she isn’t thinking much of a career in Bollywood; she is happy to tie the knot and settle down. If a nice, plum offer comes her way in future, she might take it up,” says a source.
Confirming the news Neha said, “Yes I am marrying Vishal shah. I’m not likely to do any more films in future. I have got into fashion designing and I am looking forward to open my own store.”
The source further added, “Dharam and Sanjay are going to invite almost the entire industry for the wedding recption. Dharam is in a very happy frame of mind.”

The Oscar-winning director of Brokeback Mountain and Lust, Caution has cast the Dabangg villain for Life of Pi

Ang Lee, the internationally acclaimed director of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain, who cast Anupam Kher in the 2007 espionage masterpiece, Lust, Caution, will be shooting the film adaptation of Yann Martel’s Booker Prize-winning novel, Life of Pi.
And now word is out that Dabangg baddie, Sonu Sood, has been cast as Pi’s father in the film, which goes on the floors in Pondicherry next year.
While the title role of the 16-year old Piscine Molitor ‘Pi’ Patel, aka Pi, is to be played by an undisclosed 17-year-old newbie from Delhi, Lee has zeroed in on Sonu Sood to play Pi’s papa, the second-most pivotal role in the plot.
Ang Lee personally called up Sonu after watching his work and suggested a meeting. The two met at Taj Land’s End two weeks ago.
However there’s just one hitch.
Sonu Sood is too buff to look like a 16-year-old’s father and will have to lose those 8 packs for the privilege of playing Pi’s papa.
When contacted, Sonu said, “Yes, I’ve met Ang Lee for a major role in Life Of Pi. I can’t say anything about it at the moment.
But I must say it was a huge privilege meeting Ang Lee, such a great filmmaker and so humble.
He had seen my work before meeting me,” chuckles Sonu. No more gym for you, Mr Pi.

The Oscar-winning director of Brokeback Mountain is in town scouting talent for The Life of Pi

Ang LeePost Slumdog Millionaire, which put India on the international map, the West has started scouting India for more setups. After Julia Roberts who shot Eat, Love and Pray in Delhi, the Academy Award-winning director of Brokeback Mountain and Lust, Caution, Ang Lee, has landed in town to cast for his next.
Ang Lee’s next is based on Yann Martel’s Booker Prize-winning tour de force The Life of Pi. It’s an adventure story of an Indian boy, in his early twenties, from Pondicherry who is stranded on a boat in the Pacific Ocean with a giraffe and a tiger. The filmmaker has landed in Mumbai to cast for the film and scout locations.
A source informs, “Ang Lee is in town to lock the cast for his film. He is staying at Taj Land’s End and is accompanied by an entourage. The filmmaker also made a quick trip to Pondicherry a few days ago. The whole trip has been kept highly guarded.”
The source further adds, “Ang Lee had hired a few casting agencies to shortlist actors for the film and is now deciding the final cast.
The auditions have been going on full swing for a few weeks but in a very hush-hush manner as the Asian-American filmmaker wants the whole thing to be very secretive. Ang Lee met the shortlisted actors at Mehboob Studios yesterday.”

When fans failed to recognize Ranbir!

After Ranbir grows real whiskers for his role as a sardar in Rocket Singh, fans fail to recognise him and swarm around Deepika instead

Ranbir’s new hairy avataar may not prove to be good for his ego. Last week, he was out for a quiet dinner with girlfriend Deepika Padukone. Fans approached her for autographs and pictures, but Ranbir was completely ignored. He has grown a beard and a moustache to play a sardar in Shimit Amin’s Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, which may have contributed to the lack of recognition.
Says a source present at the restaurant, “Ranbir and Deepika were at Taj Land’s End for a cozy dinner. People noticed Deepika immediately and gathered around her for autographs and also clicked pictures with her. Ranbir went unnoticed, thanks to his makeover. No one seemed to have recognised the star while they hounded Deepika, though Ranbir is equally popular and loved. It was quite amusing.”
Ranbir sure must have had a hearty laugh to see his efforts paying off. After all, he could’ve simply used fake facial hair, instead of taking the pains to grow it. He hung around watching while Deepika apparently got all the attention.
Ranbir and Deepika both remained unavailable for comment.
