Sushmita Sen looking for a Bollywood comeback?

0

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; April 18, 2013)

After her 2010 outing No Problem Sushmita Sen has not been seen on the big screen.

The actress preferred to remain low- key, resurfacing only around a beauty pageant she organised. But with the actress no longer associated with it, Sush seems in a mood to get back to where she was — on the big screen.

Says a source, “In the last few weeks, Sushmita has been spotted at several events where a lot of B- Town folk have been present too. She has been hobnobbing with several of her old associates as well as filmmakers. Sush still has the looks and the question on everyone’s mind is why does she not go back to acting?” An onlooker at one of the events says, “At jewellery designer Farah Khan Ali’s event she was seen catching up with several tinsel town folk from Hrithik Roshan to Farah Khan. Everyone was wondering what she has been up to lately.” Sen had decided to turn director-producer with her dream project a biopic on Rani Laxmibai but abandoned her plans later. She was also seen on the small screen judging a dance show. So is Sush looking at being back in the scheme of things? Time will tell.

Actors, filmmakers talk about prostitute phenomenon in Bollywood

As Kangna Ranaut gears up to play one, After Hrs talks to actresses and makers of films based on similar subject to find out why such roles stand out…

Playing a courtesan onscreen has almost always been a staple outing for our B-Town beauties. In the earlier years the actress used to be a mujrewali rather than sex worker. Vyjanthimala (Devdas), Madhubala (Mughal-e-Azam), Meena Kumari (Pakeezah) and Rekha (Muqaddar Ka Sikandar) to name a few. Only Sharmila Tagore (Mausam) Waheeda Rehman (Pyaasa) and Shabana Azmi (Mandi) were bold enough to play a full-blown street walker. The newer lot doesn’t shy away from playing a prostitute onscreen. From costumes, to dialogues and body language, they go all out to get it right. Kareena Kapoor has done two such roles (Chameli and Talaash) while others are Tabu (Chandni Bar) Sushmita Sen (Chingari) Rani Mukherji (Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Saawariya) Neha Dhupia (Julie) and Aishwarya Rai (Umrao Jaan). The latest in line to play such a character is Kangna Ranaut in Rajjo.

Risky business? Kangna Ranaut feels that a film’s risk factor has nothing to do with the subject, but the execution, “And that applies to all films not just films based on prostitution. It is not about actresses making bold choices, but filmmakers being ready to explore such topics onscreen. That has been possible because of actresses who have shown that it can be done.” She agrees with most actresses when they say that it’s More >

Yuvraj Singh-Kim Sharma avoid each other at bash?

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; February 5, 2013)

Ex flames Yuvraj Singh and Kim Sharma were once again under the same roof. But the cricketer and the starlet preferred to avoid each other and did not even come face- to- face at the event. They were spotted at a channel’s 20th anniversary bash on Friday night at a hotel in Worli.

Says an onlooker, “There were hushed whispers when people realised that Kim and Yuvi were there. But both just kept to themselves. Though Kim appeared to be alert and looking in all directions, Yuvi preferred to stick in a corner with Sushmita Sen who was with her gang of pals. He was seen constantly clicking snapshots with his mobile with select Bollywood folks in his own zone.” Adds the onlooker, “Kim was spotted at a social do after a while. Though she was moving around at the venue, she made sure that she did not come in seeing distance of Yuvraj.” Incidentally over a year ago the two almost came face-to-face at a fashion event.

Apparently as soon as Yuvi realised that Kim was around, he preferred to make an exit from the scene.

In 2010, Kim had a hush-hush marriage with Kenyan businessman Ali Punjani and relocated to Nairobi. When asked about the split on Simi Garewal’s chat show Yuvi had stated, “At that time I was just peaking in my career. Yes, I was going to get married, as she has been the main love of my life. She is married now so it’s not good to talk about her.”

My Nani & Naseeruddin Shah shared a sense of bitterness-Randeep Hooda

Priya Gupta (BOMBAY TIMES; January 18, 2013)

Randeep Hooda, 36, got his love from his nani, freshness from horses and discipline from Naseeruddin Shah. Ahead of his upcoming film Murder 3, he talks about the similarities between Naseer and his nani, his love for horses and why the break-up with Sushmita Sen was the best thing that happened to him. Excerpts:

Tell us about your childhood? I am a Jat born in Jassia village and brought up in Rohtak, where I lived with my nani. My parents lived in different countries where my father worked as a surgeon. I would visit my parents during holidays and would travel alone. From the age of six, my mom would stick this bib on my chest saying ‘unaccompanied child’ on a flight back to India. I think in a lot of ways I am still an unaccompanied child. As a child, I used to run from my school in Rohtak to my village to just hang out with animals as I found solace in them. I was most attached to my nani, who died two years ago. She was so omnipresent in my life and yet, towards her end when she was sick, I could not be with her as I had no work and did not have the luxury to travel whenever I wanted to. I always felt that I needed to be in Mumbai to be available for work which may come to me. She was not quite affectionate and looked after me with a heavy hand. She was headstrong, angsty and a lot of times, bitter. But she would travel 70 kms on the back of a scooter to come and see me every Teacher’s Day. I am also guilty of not More >

Mehul S Thakkar (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 9, 2013)

In an initiative that will definitely be welcomed by the country’s billion, top stars from Bollywood will come together in a campaign to raise awareness for the girl child. The video, which has been envisaged along the lines of the immensely popular and rousing Mile Sur Mera Tumhara, in all likelihood will see Sonakshi Sinha, Hema Malini, Raveena Tandon, Sushmita Sen, Shilpa Shetty and Nagarjuna, to name a few, lip sync to the song by Shankar Mahadevan and Sunidhi Chauhan. The music has been scored by Nikhil Kamath. A source close to the development revealed: A production house has been entrusted with the job of shooting the stars at their respective homes for the collage that will be put together. The song, titled Betiyaan has been allocated to each of the stars. The film is being directed by ad man and filmmaker Rajeev Walia, who heard the song and approached the government with the idea to use it for a larger cause. Apparently, he was immediately given a go-ahead. Raveena Tandon was the first actress to come on board, he says.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the only filmmaker in the campaign who has already shot for his part said: “Killing of the girl child is a very serious issue. Not only are there rampant foeticides and abortions, when a girl child is born, a pall of gloom falls on the family. It is almost as if someone has died. It is not just More >

Chitrangda Singh to do a Sushmita Sen?

0

Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; December 25, 2012)

They say cinema mirrors reality. And going by that it is not surprising that Chitrangda Singh’s next with Sudhir Mishra, Inkaar, is based on real-life incidents.

And one among them is about something that happened to Sushmita Sen.

A source says, “The film essays Chitrangda locked in a courtroom drama over sexual harassment at work place. She plays an aspiring writer who becomes the creative director of an ad agency. One incident that happens to her is something like what took place in Sush’s life.” In 2003, the former Miss Universe filed a case against a cold drink company.

In order to renew her endorsement contract, a company official had allegedly asked her for a few sexual favours. The company later paid nearly Rs 1.5 crore to the model-turned-actress to withdraw charges against their marketing head.

Chitrangada says, “When I met some HR officials from different companies I was shocked to hear of several cases of harassments. But fortunately it does not happen much in Bollywood.”

Delhi-girl Chitrangda Singh is outraged at the recent rape case in the capital and has gone all out on Twitter to express her anger. Ironically, her upcoming film Inkaar also deals with sexual harassment at work.

When asked whether objectifying women in films and advertisements has in any way been responsible for the increase in crimes against women, she says, “I totally disagree that item numbers are in any way responsible. It’s all in the mind and men can’t take no for an answer.”

Elaborating further, she adds, “The Indian society is in a state of flux wherein women are getting more confident about their sexuality and are becoming financially independent. Men biologically take longer to deal with change than women. Thus, it is becoming difficult for them to adapt to the changing gender roles. Men usually channelise their anger through physical aggression and sex is largely a power game.”

Speaking about sexual harassment that her film Inkaar starring Arjun Rampal deals with, she confesses that it was an eye-opener. “I had no idea that sexual harassment was so prevalent until I started working in my film. An Indian software giant has 60 reported cases annually and had to assign a special committee to look into it. Even Sushmita Sen had filed a case against a cola company executive over alleged sexual misconduct. It’s an ugly reality that can no longer be shoved under the carpet.” She also adds that contrary More >

Sushmita Sen to celebrate birthday with daughters

0

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; November 19, 2012)

Sushmita Sen celebrates her 37th birthday today. The actress who has been globetrotting of late from New Delhi to Los Angeles to San Francisco to Bangkok has always preferred a low-key celebration with her family and dear ones. And this year will be no different.

Says a source, “As usual she will celebrate with her daughters Renee and Alisah. They love the cake cutting. The elder one Renee takes over and makes it special for Sushmita.”

The actress has been flying in and out of the city hopping across continents to attend events for social causes and NGOs. Earlier this month she was in the US attending fund raisers. She flew into Mumbai last weekend from the US for four days to be part of buddy designer Rohhit Verma’s fashion show where she was the showstopper.

Says Rohhit, “I am gifting Sushmita a gown designed specially for her. She loves wearing gowns so that is the perfect present for her big day. I will also be giving her flowers as she loves them as well as chocolates.” Sush was last seen on the big screen in No Problem in 2010.

Sushmita Sen refused to wear a designer time piece at a fashion show as it was not included in her contract

Sonali joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; November 12, 2012)

Sushmita Sen may not have any films on hand but she continues being the diva. The actress was the showstopper at Rohhit Verma’s Ignite fashion show. At the event, all those who walked the ramp including Sunny Leone and Sonu Sood wore watches designed by Shilpa Marigold. But Sush refused to wear the time piece as she was not paid for doing so! Says a source, “Rohhit requested her to wear the watch as all the models as well as the celebrity models wore it. But Sushmita remained adamant and went ahead without it on the ramp.” Buzz is that Sen was paid nearly Rs 11 lakh to be the showstopper.

As the clause of wearing the watch was not included in her contract, she preferred not to flaunt the time piece.

Rohhit however maintains, “Sushmita was ready to wear the watch but it was not fitting her well. Initially she decided to hold it in her hand and walk the ramp. But after she realised that the watch was worth a crore, she chose to be cautious as she did not want to drop it on the catwalk. Finally she handed it over to a crew member in the green room.” However, even without the watch Sush’s sense of timing was perfect and acted like a diva.

Sushmita’s daughter has super-crush on Varun Dhawan

Jigar Shah (MID-DAY; October 29, 2012)

The teenage bandwagon across the country is singing praises of Varun Dhawan, who made his Bollywood debut with ‘Student of the Year’.

And looks like one star kid has fallen for another. Sources say that Sushmita Sen’s elder daughter Renee has developed a super crush on Varun, who is director David Dhawan’s son.

A source close to the Sens says, “Ever since the promos of the film have been airing on TV, Renee has been in awe of Varun and had been wanting to see his film ever since. Ultimately on Wednesday she dragged her mother Sush to a movie hall to finally watch Varun in action.”

Interestingly, Sush and Varun have known each other for a long time. The Bong beauty has worked with David Dhawan in three films Biwi No.1, Kyuki Main Jhooth Nahi Bolta and Do Knot Distrub. Our source adds, “It could happen that Sush introduces Varun to her daughter.” Let the sparks fly then!
