Exploring the double role phenomenon of Bollywood
1Bollywood is all set to revisit the double role formula
Seema Sinha (BOMBAY TIMES; June 11, 2012)
In last week’s release Rowdy Rathore, apart from the desi action or unabashed entertainment, one thing that stood out was the double role of the leading hero. In the past decade, not many filmmakers have attempted to exploit the dual character, but now the double role formula, which was considered to be a favourite among many filmmakers at some point of time, looks set to return.
HIT FORMULA? Be it the identical twins caught in extreme dramatic situations of lost and found, or a lookalike becoming the cause of confusion, the comedy of clones is often a sure shot formula to success. Trace the history of Bollywood and you will find that almost every top actor has played a double role in at least one film in his or her career, and these films have been huge grossers at the box office – Dilip Kumar (Ram Aur Shyam), Dev Anand (Hum Dono), Sanjeev Kumar (Angoor), Rajesh Khanna (Aradhana), Amitabh Bachchan (Don, Satte Pe Satta), Shatrughan Sinha (Kalicharan), Hema Malini (Seeta Aur Geeta), Sridevi (Chaalbaaz), Salman Khan (Judwaa), Shah Rukh Khan (Duplicate, Om Shanti Om), Govinda (Aankhen), Sunil Shetty (Gopi Kishan), Anil Kapoor (Kishen Kanhaiya).
REVISITING DOUBLE ROLE In the recent past, we have seen Shahid Kapoor playing a double role in Kaminey and Saif Ali Khan in Love Aaj Kal. According to film director David Dhawan, who has given a string of hits with male leads in a More >

0Gunda fame actor breathes his last in a Hyderabad hospital while undergoing a treatment for his kidney ailment
P Pavann (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 15, 2011)
Indian cinema has lost yet another versatile actor. Rami Reddy, the popular villain of the Telugu cinema who also stretched his wings successfully into Bollywood, expired on Thursday noon while undergoing treatment for a kidney ailment.
During a recent public appearance, on being asked about his increasing weight, the actor joked, “I am not following size zero formula. It won’t suit a villain character. I suffered jaundice during which my liver got damaged.”
The 52-year-old actor who acted in over 250 films also including Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Bhojpuri, breathed his last at the KIMS hospital in Hyderabad where he was admitted two weeks ago.
A native of Chittor, the actor was a journalism graduate from Hyderabad’s Osmania University and worked as a journalist with a Hindi and an Urdu newspaper.
After he quit journalism, it was Tollywood director Kodi Ramakrishna who introduced Reddy in Ankusam as Spot Nana in in 1990. The same year he plunged into Bollywood, as a villain, with Juhi Chawla and Chiranjeevi starrer Pratibandh.
His memorable performances were in films like Gunda with Mithun Chakraborty, Waqt Hamara Hai, Khuddar, Akshay Kumar starrer Jaanwar and Talaash.
The director of Talaash, Suneel Darshan, told Mumbai Mirror, “Rami Reddy has a huge profile of work in Hindi and Telugu. His More >
Old partners patch up on Holi
0Ekta Kapoor and Sanjay Gupta, while enjoying Holi festivities, celebrated their joint venture Shootout At Lokhandwala Part 2
Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 21, 2011)
While Ekta Kapoor and Sanjay Gupta celebrated Holi yesterday afternoon (see more pics on right), we learn that the duo have more than colour balloons hidden under their sleeves.
The speculations that Kapoor and Gupta would collaborate again for their sequel to Shootout At Lokhandwala, based on the real life shootout at Lokhandwala in 1991, has finally been made official.
Yogen ShahAlthough the original movie did fairly well at the box office in 2007, Kapoor and Gupta had a professional fall-out following the film’s release.
Then on January 24, 2010 Mumbai Mirror broke the story about the disagreement between them over the subject for the sequel. While Kapoor wanted to base the sequel on another real life cop-gangster shootout, Gupta was reluctant to do so.
A source tells us, “All that is a thing of the past now. Kapoor and Gupta have met at a common point.” Gupta has bought the rights of a recent Hong Kong action movie for the sequel and has been spotted frequently visiting Kapoor’s office in Andheri lately.
Since Gupta had a fall-out with the film’s original director Apoorva Lakhia, the sequel will be directed either by Gupta himself or a new director. We wonder which of the actors from the original film will secure a role in the sequel.

0Bollywood’s sporty men are all set to take on South stars in a day-and-night cricket match at Visakhapatnam
Nimisha Tiwari | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; March 1, 2011)
What’s common between the actors from the South and apna Bollywood brigade, apart from acting? Cricket. And now they plan to come together to play the game.
With the World Cup matches currently on, cricket’s truly the flavour of the season. To make the most of this craze, a select team of tinseltown actors including the spirited Salman Khan, Sonu Sood, Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan, Suneil Shetty, Harman Baweja, Riteish Deshmukh and Ashish Chowdhry, have agreed to make their way to Visakhapatnam (Vizag) on March 5 for a curtain raiser, Day and Night Celebrity Cricket League T20 match there. South stars are obviously not sitting ducks, their cricketing skills are already well-known. The team, which includes Venkatesh, Sudeep, Surya, Manchu Vishnu, Aarya, Siddharth, Tarun, Abbas, Chiranjeevi Sarja, Shantanu Bhagyaraj, Sarath Kumar, Vikrant and Shaam, are all geared to kick their opponent’s ass, on the ACA-VDCA cricket stadium in Vizag. One actor who was chosen to play from both Bolly and Tolly sides was Sonu Sood. A beaming Sonu says, “I’ve always aspired to be a cricketer but main acting field mein aa gaya. I had shot for Atturu with Trisha in Vizag many years ago, so I was called to join the South team first. But, Salman Khan asked me to be on Bollywood’s side.”

0Singer Mika cancelled his Malaysia concert at once.
