Javed Akhtar to Aamir-Your so-called contribution is nothing but interference

Javed Akhtar and Aamir Khan had a heated altercation when the actor tried to dismiss the contribution of writers and lyricists, saying that it’s the star who makes a song successful By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 16, 2010)

It was a meeting meant to sort out the imbroglio between film producers and lyricists-writers, the latter’s forum represented by Javed Akhtar. But matters came to a sticky head when Aamir Khan, siding with film producers, suggested that lyricists don’t really contribute much to the impact of a song.

It was just too much for the legendary poet-lyricist Javed Akhtar to take, and it soon became a war of words between him and Aamir. Says an eyewitness, “Aamir made it clear that he felt a song becomes a hit because it is picturised on a big star. To this Javed saab asked him, ‘Your first big song was Papa kehte hain. Did it make you a star or did you make that a song run?’”

Temperatures in the room started rising, but Aamir stuck to his stand. “When Aamir again insisted that it’s the star who makes a bigger contribution to a song becoming a hit, Javed retorted, ‘Your so-called contribution is nothing but interference. We lyricists would be eternally grateful if you keep your so-called contribution to yourself. We manage to do good work not because of, but in spite of your contribution.’”

Needless to say, Aamir was growing hot under the collar at this direct confrontation. “But when Aamir went a step further to More >

Peepli Live at Sundance-Co director shares his experience

By Mahmood Farooqui (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 01, 2010)

// // // The Sundance ‘thing’ started for us in the shuttle as we travelled from the airport at Salt Lake City, the capital of Utah, to Park City where the festival is mainly held. We were sharing the cab with an Iranian origin investment banker from London who had come to attend the premiere of his Arab-origin, New York-based girlfriend’s first film, The Imperialists are still Alive. Sitting at the front was a sales agent from L.A who was good friends, believe it or not, with Gulshan Grover and had helped produce Deepa Mehta’s Earth: 1947. It was all very international and also very US.

Our first screening of Peepli Live took place at the Egyptian theatre, down Main Street, the only screening venue which is located in the Park City. The quaint theatre hall was completely full and the first public screening of the film and also the premiere, went down much better than we expected. A hall full of Americans seemed to enjoy every nuance of what is a very Indian film. The Q and A afterwards, and this was true of every subsequent screening, had charged up Americans wanting to unravel complex economic issues of rural India.

The festival itself is spread out over several theatres several miles from each other and they are all unconventional venues. The Temple theatre is a Jewish synagogue, the Library is located at a school, The Yarrow is a hotel, Prospector is a lodge while the Eccles, the largest of them all, is More >

RED HOT: Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone is on the prowl…

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; January 23, 2010)

When you’re super confident, gorgeous and as successful as Deepika Padukone, then you don’t waste time crying over split relationships. You hold your head on your tall frame high and just glide like a diva. That is exactly what Deepika is doing. She refutes talk that she has immersed herself neck-deep in work because she wants no time to think. Laughing aloud she says, “Love Aaj Kal is the second most successful film of 2009 after 3 Idiots. Saif Ali Khan, Imtiaz Ali, Dinesh Vijjan and I didn’t feel the need to put out advertisements in newspapers saying ours is one of the biggest hits simply because it is a huge hit. And, it so happens that by virtue of this super-hit, I’ve bagged some super duper assignments.” This year will have Deepika in Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se, Pradeep Sarkar’s next with Neil Nitin Mukesh, Farhan Akhtar’s Kartik Calling Kartik and Sajid Khan’s Houseful. Besides these she also starts work on a romantic film with Imran Khan produced by Kunal Kohli. “With so much happening, I’ve no time to even breathe,” says the actress, who in two years since her debut is knocking on the doors of Bollywood’s czarinas. “I’m so glad that I got this opporutnity to work with Ashutosh,” she says. “He is awesome.” She is fortunate that her roles are also varied. If she will prance in a bikini around Akshay Kumar in Houseful, then More >

Farah Khan blasts 'Clerk'!

Manoj Kumar reacts to Farah Khan’s snide remark that his 1989 film, Clerk, is a ‘treasure chest of ham scenes’ By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 26, 2009)

Manoj Kumar

Farah Khan has rubbed veteran actor Manoj Kumar the wrong way again. After a raging controversy, which triggered off when she showcased Manoj Kumar in a poor light in Om Shanti Om, a few weeks ago, Farah made a statement in the media that she rated Manoj Kumar’s film, Clerk as “a treasure chest of ham scenes”.

Reacting angrily to Farah’s statement, Manoj Kumar said, “Ham means pig. I am still a student of cinema. Farah is bubbly and successful and she is entitled to her opinion. I wish her well but those who think that they have become masters (after becoming successful) are wrong. Go back and take a look at the choreographers who ruled the roost in my era. I think Farah should first learn to spell choreography. Keeping the same background and repeating the same shots is not choreography. It means that a song should take the story forward. If you don’t know that, you have no right to choreograph a song.”

Manoj says that he vividly remembers many scenes from the film, which released 20 years ago. “Nowadays, writers copy old films and nonchalantly walk away with awards. I have no respect for anybody who is not original, irrespective of the fate of his/her product at the box-office,”

When asked what he thinks of Farah as a filmmaker, he replied, “What films has More >
