This play is a casting couch in reality-Nandita Das’ hubby
0Real-life couple Subodh Maskara and Nandita Das’ first play together, which was staged in the city this weekend, will also be taken to Bangladesh soon

It’s the story of a lawyer couple fighting a case against each other, and real-life couple Subodh Maskara and Nandita Das, co-collaborators on the play, say that it borrows from their life. Called Between The Lines, the English play, the first creative project from their production house, marks the debut of Nandita as a writer-director and Subodh as a producer and actor. In a chat with BT, they talk about working together and how work on the play had started as a romantic idea of doing something creative together.
So, when did you first think of working together? Nandita: Subodh always had a desire to explore something creative and he wanted to start with theatre. We also wanted to do a film and I am sure he’ll be a great film producer as well. So, we thought of setting up a small company, which will do quality work without compromises and yet make it viable. Our son was small and I was the chairperson of the Children’s Film Society, India, but I wasn’t doing anything creatively stimulating. So, I said, ‘Why don’t we do a play?’ and I chanced upon this script that was offered to me long back as an actor. I started working on it, but realised I didn’t have enough discipline to work on it alone and that I needed a collaborator. Subodh: The acting part came in a bit later. More >
Quick look at year 2010
0By Subhash K. Jha, December 31, 2010 – 12:24 IST
Are you kidding? The letter ‘R’ kept recurring in 2010. The biggest letdown of the year Raavan and one of the biggest hits of the year Raajneeti shared the ‘R’ factor. No doubt Ranbir Kapoor was the star of the year while Rahman, the maestro from Chennai lost some of his sheen with unpardonable delays and mediocre scores like Raavan and Jhootha Hi Sahi.
The biggest chartbuster of the year came from the low profile Lalit Pandit whose ‘Munni Badnaam Hui‘ instantly joined the ranks of the ritziest item songs in Bollywood, on a par with ‘Kajra Re‘ and ‘Beedi Jalai Le‘. It also catapulted the sizzling Malaika Arora to dizzying heights of glory. Malaika will now dance only for her husband producer Arbaaz Khan’s films and will of course endorse the brand of balm that the song so seductively talks about.
Brand endorsement and Bollywood became inextricably bonded in 2010. When stars were not shooting feature films (and many of the leading ladies were not) they were shooting ads. And when they weren’t shooting ads they were shooting their mouths off to the media. Otherwise there were always the stage performances.
Besides A R Rahman’s World Tour, there were no major world-concert tours from Bollywood in 2010. 2011 will see Ranbir Kapoor take off for his first ever live performance all over the world.
If A-lister stars were not heading to the stage they took off for television. Priyanka Chopra displayed some delectable More >

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 12, 2010)
Nandita Das and Subodh Maskara are the proud parents of a baby boy. Nandita delivered their first child in a city hospital yesterday morning at 10.45 a.m.
An elated Subodh told Mumbai Mirror, “We are very happy. Nandita and the baby are fine. Our families are rejoicing.”
Subodh said that they haven’t thought of any names as yet. However, the couple was baby-shopping quite a bit since the past few months. “Shopping toh bahut chal hi rahi thi,” Subodh said rather nonchalantly.
Did they want a son or a daughter, we asked? Subodh says, “There were no preferences. We just wanted a healthy baby.”
Subodh is an industrialist and Milind Soman and Shahana Goswami introduced him to Nandita. It was love at first sight for both.

0KEEPING MUM: Nandita Das with husband Subodh Maskara
DEEPALI DHINGRA Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; March 6, 2010)
Nandita Das seems to be on a new high these days. Not only has her debut film Firaaq got appreciation and awards, her marriage to industrialist Subodh Maskara, in January this year, seems to have brought a sense of calm to the actress-turned-director. And the reason for the glow on her face? Well, our source tells us that the stork’s visiting Nandita! Yes, rumour has it that Nandita, who is best known for her fiery performances in films like Fire and Bawandar, is expecting her first baby. She was offered a film but she refused it, citing her pregnancy as reason, because by the time the film starts, she would be in her seventh month. The text message we sent Nandita to confirm went unreplied, but we guess the actress, who’s known to be a private person, isn’t willing to talk about it yet. But if the buzz is true, then all we can do is wish Nandita all the very best.
Nandita makes her move
0The dusky actor has made Mumbai her home – and Subodh Maskara her husband
By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 05, 2010)There aren’t very many Delhi-based Bollywood actors, but Nandita Das certainly figured high on the list. Even Aamir Khan – her co-star in 1947 Earth – had tried to convince her to move from Delhi to Mumbai to pursue her acting career, but she held strong. Now, Nandita has finally made Mumbai her home, post her recent marriage to environment entrepreneur Subodh Maskara.
Confirming the news, she sighs, “What I resisted doing for 13 long years has finally been done. I couldn’t imagine shifting to Mumbai for my career, but love did it.”
Nandita Das and Subodh MaskaraSubodh was introduced to Nandita by her friend Shahana Goswami (whom she directed last year in Firaq) and her boyfriend Milind Soman. “Milind and Shahana kept urging me to meet Subodh. But I’m the last person to believe in blind dates. But look at destiny, now I completely believe in instant love. When I was hesitant about meeting him, Subodh sent me a lovely e-mail. And I said, ‘Why not? Just have coffee with him?’ So we met. And immediately I knew this was it. Within five months of meeting him, I knew I wanted to marry him. We became soul mates seamlessly,” she recalls.
Nandita and Subodh got married according to Ashram Vidhi rites on January 2 at Subodh’s residence in Worli, which is now their marital home. “Only our parents – his parents and brother, my parents and More >
