Barbara returns to haunt Hrithik

November 19 will go down in history. Jayantilal Gada’s Barbara Mori starrer will lock horns with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hrithik starrer. This is the result of a bizarre revenge saga

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 15, 2010)

We had broken the news that Rakesh Roshan’s arch-rival in the industry, Jayantilal Gada, head honcho of PEN Entertainment, had bought the rights of My Brother’s Wife, a Spanish film starring Barbara Mori, hoping to cash in on the success of Kites.

Kites bombed, but Gada, it seems, is still wanting a panga with the Roshans.

It needs to be reminded that Gada and Rakesh Roshan had fought a legal battle in court over the film and TV merchandising rights of Hrithik’s debut feature, Kaho Na Pyar Hai. It seems that the bad vibes have yet to dissipate between the two.

In a bid to outdo the Roshans, Gada, who has dubbed My Brother’s Wife in Hindi and English and re-titled it as Spanish Beauty, has now slated it for release on the same date as the Hrithik Roshan starrer Guzaarish.

Both, Spanish Beauty and Guzaarish, will hit the theatres on November 19.

Gada, who was keen to release Barbara Mori’s Spanish film My Brother’s Wife, in June this year, postponed it. In fact he wanted to release this film before Kites, but could not complete the dubbing in time.

Says a source, “Spanish Beauty can attract an audience as it has a lot of bold scenes by Barbara.” In a very diplomatic U-turn, Gada told Mumbai Mirror last evening, More >

Is Guzaarish inspired by The Sea Inside?

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, September 25, 2010 – 14:06 IST

The first look promo of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highly anticipated Hrithik-Aishwarya starrer Guzaarish was unveiled earlier this week. While the promo is quite splendid to say the least, the film does bear some resemblance to a 2004 Spanish film called The Sea Inside which is based on a true story of a sailor Ramdon Sampredo who becomes a quadriplegic following an accident. In Guzaarish, the buzz is that Hrithik, who plays a magician, ends up in a wheelchair because of an accident that happens when a magic trick goes wrong.

Bhansali’s earlier films such as Black was also inspired from The Miracle Worker while Saawariya was loosely based on a Russian short story ‘White Nights’.

While neither Bhansali nor his lead actors were in any mood to reveal even a bit about the story of Guzaarish at the launch event, going by the promos of the two films, there is no denying that there is some similarity between Guzaarish and The Sea Inside.

Sanjay Gupta planning a multi-starrer next

By Taran Adarsh, August 31, 2010 – 08:31 IST

//

// ]]> Here’s a quick clarification about Sanjay Gupta’s next film. A section of the media has reported that the maverick film-maker is planning to remake a Spanish film, which is expected to star the Deol brothers – Sunny and Bobby – in principal roles. The news is partly true, partly false.

Partly true: Gupta is remaking a Spanish film. But the other part of the news – the casting – is completely wrong. The fact is that it’s a four-hero project and Gupta hasn’t signed anyone as yet. “I haven’t signed Sunny or Bobby. We are still scripting,” he sets the record straight. The truth is, Gupta will start the film early next year, after the Meghna Gulzar film, produced by him, is complete.

As far as the casting of Gupta’s film is concerned, there’re whispers that he is planning to cast Anil Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Arjun Rampal in principal roles. Awaiting the official confirmation from Gupta.

By Nikhil Ramsubramaniam, June 19, 2010 – 11:21 IST

5 years after his last directorial venture Zinda, Sanjay Gupta is all set for his next directorial venture which is the remake of the Spanish film Ladron Que Roba A Ladron. Sanjay, who has this time around, officially acquired the rights of this film from the makers Lions Gate Films, is least perturbed by the fact that another top director Abbas-Mustan is also planning to make the same film.

Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, Sanjay says, “I am certainly going ahead with the remake of Ladron Que Roba A Ladron. We are planning to shoot the film in London and for the same I am even planning to acquire an office there. The film will star 4 heroes and 2 heroines and most of my cast is more or less locked. We will be making an announcement shortly on the same. Besides the film will also have a lot of foreign crew members.”

Ask him whether he has been facing any kind of pressure to part with the rights of the film and Sanjay says, “Yes I have been getting a lot of calls asking me to part with the rights but I guess its all too late in the day now. A lot of spadework has already been done now and so you can say things are in quite an advanced stage right now as far as White Feather Films is concerned.”

On being asked how did he decide on remaking this particular film, Gupta says, “I happened to receive a lot of fan mails asking me to remake this particular film. I then watched the film myself and really More >

The producer, who was set to release Barbara Mori’s Spanish film, seems to be developing cold feet after the Kites debacle

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 12, 2010)

Rakesh Roshan’s kati patang has had a domino effect in the industry. The producer Jayantilal Gada, who was keen to release Barbara Mori’s Spanish film My Brother’s Wife, is introspecting on the wisdom of the idea. Barbara hasn’t exactly created a flutter after the release of Kites. The big question that Gada is grappling with now is: Can he bank on her to carry the film?

Though Gada has dubbed the film in English and Hindi, he has decided to postpone the release of his film. Scheduled to release in June, the film will now release only two-three months later.

A source says, “It’s a business decision. The Indian audience did not lap up Kites. He expected Kites to do very well. There was so much hype about that film. But now, Gada wants all the negativity about Kites to die down.

He expects that this will happen in two-three months time. Only then, he will release his film.”

The producer is putting up a brave front though. Gada said, “I was sure that Kites will be a super hit. So I had decided to release my film immediately after Kites. But now we are adding four good songs (two by Atif Aslam) to the film as background score.

However, I must say that I am very confident about my film. You can say that I am relaunching Barbara Mori in India. Boney Kapoor is releasing my More >

Sanjay Gupta and Abbas Mustan clash over the rights to remake the same Spanish film in Hindi — and neither of them is ready to back down

Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 28, 2010)

Sanjay Gupta is ready to direct again after five years, but his choice of film is proving to be problematic. A Hindi remake of the Spanish film Ladron Que Roba A Ladron, it has been titled Jahan Teri Yeh Nazar Hai and he has bought the rights from its original producers, Lions Gate films.

However, Abbas Mustan is also making the same film, which will be produced by Shemaroo, titled Players. And thus, the fight for the rights begins.

Our source said, “Gupta was in the process of buying the rights when he learnt that Shemaroo is also bidding for the same film. He managed to bag the rights as the producers of the Spanish film had seen Kaante. However, Abbas Mustan had already finished the entire script and are in the process of casting.

Abbas Mustan Sanjay Gupta

They named the film Players and managed to get the title. That’s when the producers learnt that Sanjay Gupta is also going ahead with the film. Ketan Maroo, the owner of Shemaroo, has also approached Gupta to part with the rights but Gupta is in no mood to comply.”

An unperturbed Sanjay Gupta said, “Yes, it has been brought to my notice that a lot of people have been toying with the idea of remaking this film. I don’t blame them. It makes for great commercial cinema. As things stand now, the More >

Barbara’s Spanish film dubbed in Hindi to release before Kites?

Barbara is flying high before the release of Kites as producers queue up to release her Spanish films dubbed in Hindi By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 24, 2010)

// // // Barbara Mori has a platform in Bollywood that debutantes can only dream of. Her sex appeal has encouraged a producer to dub her Spanish film, My Brother’s Wife, in Hindi and release it close to the release of her big ticket, Kites. Buzz is that many Bollywood producers want to cash in on her sexy image and dub some of her Spanish films in Hindi and release it on and around May 21, when Kites is slated to hit the theatres.

But the producer most likely to win the race is Jayantilal Gada (the man behind PEN – Popular Entertainment Network Limited) who is about to lock the deal on My Brother’s Wife.

Rumour has it that Gada wanted to release the Hindi version of My Brother’s Wife before Kites, but his talks with the producers, though in an advanced stage, have still not reached a conclusion.

However, he is unfazed about the fact that he will now have to probably release it two-three weeks after Kites. He has done all the spadework, which includes cutting promos, and once he locks his deal with the producer of My Brother’s Wife, he will put them on air.

A source says, “Even if Gada gets 15-20 per cent of the audience that Kites gets, he will still make a decent profit. In fact, he is sure that he can bring in the audience with his Hindi version of My Brother’s More >
