Movie Review: HAPPY HUSBANDS by FENIL SETA

0

It’s fun to watch B-grade films! The nonsensical stuff that is dished out by these films can at times provide high octane entertainment! And this can really be enjoyed more if you watch these films in theatres! With this belief and some nice previous experiences, I ventured out to see Happy Husbands expecting lots of fun. However, this time, I was really very disappointed! The film is abound with stupid scenes but none that make you say, “LOL…what a stupid scene…hahahah!”. In fact, the sequences in the flick make you squirm, “Yuck…what a stupid scene…Chee!

The story of the movie: Jaiveer (Anay) is the unofficial guru for wannabe cheating husbands. Mohit (Mohit Ghai) has a loving wife but off late is finding himself attracted to every other lady except his wife! He shares his problem with his buddy Arjun (Ahwaan) who affirms that ‘this is natural’ and he shouldn’t hesitate and that he should shamelessly cheat on his wife! Mohit doesn’t like the idea and hence Arjun takes him to Jaiveer who turns Mohit into a ‘cheating husband’. Mohit at this point comes across Komal Mazaakar, a rich divorcee and Jaiveer motivates Mohit to have an affair with her. However, soon their life takes a turn and they realize that what they believe and what they are doing is wrong.

Happy Husbands rests on an ‘innovative’ idea-if you really love your wife and attend to all her wishes and demands, there’s no wrong in occasionally cheating on her! Thankfully, the protagonists are shown More >

Movie Review: YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA by FENIL SETA

0

The ‘old wine in new bottle’ packaging has been in vogue since a long time due to many reasons, 2 of them being that it’s perceived as a safe measure and also maybe because of absence of new ideas. Whatever maybe the reason, if given the right treatment, such films can work wonders at the BO and also ensure electrifying start at the box office (Last year’s Dabangg being the classic example). Yamla Pagla Deewana also belongs to the category of masala films of yesteryears and has been inspired by many films across decades. Still it manages to tickle your funny bone mainly because it has its heart and intentions at the right place! The script is loaded with some amazing funny moments and the three Deols just rock the show!

The story of the movie: Paramveer Singh Dhillon (Sunny Deol) stays in Vancouver with his wife Mary (Emma Brown Garrett), two sons and mother (Nafisa Ali). He learns that his brother Gajodhar (Bobby Deol) and father Dharam Singh (Dharmendra) who got separated from Paramveer and his mother during childhood are in Banaras. Paramveer therefore embarks on a journey to the holy city to meet his remaining family! There he learns that the father-son duo is the biggest conmen in the city, who always manage to pull off hilarious cons on unsuspecting people! But once they are all set to get beaten up but the brave Paramveer saves them. Paramveer is then willingly accepted into the father-son’s gang because of his muscle strength. Samir Karnik angry with No Problem makers

0

By Subhash K. Jha, December 10, 2010 – 10:41 IST

It is that copycat syndrome again. Or so director Samir Karnik believes. In an angry outburst he says his posters of the three loveable Sardarjis – Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby Deol in Yamla Pagla Deewana has inspired director Anees Bazmee to put his entire male cast into turbans on the posters of No Problem.

Says Samir, “We came up with posters showing the Deols in turbans. Soon after that, I saw similar posters of No Problem with all their heroes Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna etc. as Sardarjis, plastered all over town. It can’t be a coincidence.”

No Problem director Anees Bazmee agrees there is design behind the Sikh posters. “We shot the song with the entire cast dressed up in Sikh turbans a year ago. So where’s the question of copying the other film? With due respects to Dharam paaji, Sunny, Bobby and Samir Karnik, my links with Punjab and Punjabiyat go back a long way. I made Singh Is Kingg. And if I had my way, I’d make Singh Is Kinng 2 too. But I am not being allowed to. You’ll have to ask producer Vipul Shah why.”

However, Samir Karnik gets the last word in on the question of Punjabiyat.

Says Karnik, “Amost everyone in the cast and crew of Yamla Pagla Deewana is Sikh. All the Deols, our leading lady Kulraj Randhawa even our writer Jasvinder Singh Bhatt are Sikhs. They (the unit of No Problem) might have shot their turbaned song first. But our posters were out first.”

Two of the three actors from Love Sex Aur Dhokha , Anshuman Jha and Raj Kumar Yadav, will be cast together in Boys Toh Boys Hai, a film inspired by Archies comics

Mauli Singh (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 13, 2010)

After debuting in Dibakar Banerjee’s Love Sex Aur Dhokha, Anshuman Jha and Raj Kumar Yadav are back as the leads in debutant director Amit Chauhan’s Boys Toh Boys Hai, a comic caper on the lines of Archies set in Delhi.

The director informs, “It’s a youthful, coming-of-age story of four young guys. They all face a similar problem–there are no women in their lives.

They are looking for the perfect woman in their lives and fall in love but none of them is able to find the right woman. The crux of the story is how they overcome their problems and find their respective ladyloves. Anshuman plays a sardar, Rajkumar plays baniya and there is a character called Atal Bihari Bakshi, a Punjabi born in Bihar, played by a debutant Anuj Kumar.”

The look and feel of the film is inspired from Archies, the iconic comic book series. “The film will have the same colours as used in Archies comics” says the director. The first schedule of the film will start in Mumbai from September 21.”

A Barry John prodigy, Anshuman, who feels that he will be more like the actress in a film, considering it will take him two hours to get ready with a beard and turban, adds, “It’s great to be playing a sardar. I am learning More >

What were Jaideep & Shimit thinking while doing Rocket Singh?-Abbas Tyrewala

By Subhash K. Jha, December 31, 2009 – 11:35 IST

Abbas Tyrewala who directed one of 2008′s biggest successes is also a writer of great repute, having written among other things, the prophetic dialogues of Munnabhai MBBS and the screenplay of Maqbool.

Abbas went to see the latest Yashraj production Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year not only as a writer and director but also as an eager fan of the films that the banner comes out of.

“I love Jaideep Sahni’s writing and Shimit Amin’s direction. But what were they thinking while doing Rocket Singh? Where is the payoff in the screenplay? Where is the hero? Ranbir plays a timid Sardar who steals phone lines and computer hardware from his work-place to start his own business. And we are supposed to accept him as a man of integrity! Would he be able to start his own business if it wasn’t for the nefarious support he gets from his work-place? In other words the ‘hero’ resorts to those very underhand tactics that he claims to abhor and takes the help of that very organization which has disgraced him!”

Most damaging of all, Abbas couldn’t see a hero in Ranbir’s character. “The boss (Manish Chowdhary) is so over-the-top he belongs to another sensibility altogether, calls Ranbir a ‘bastard’ several times, humiliates and disgraces him publicly. We wait for our hero to have his revenge on the boorish boss. I completely believe in the old-fashioned Hindi film formula where the hero gives his tormentor tit for tat. But Boss, where’s the More >

By Indu Mirani (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 04, 2009)

Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year star Ranbir Kapoor, director Shimit Amin and writer Jaideep Sahni get together to answer a rapid fire round related to sales and marketing.

Before Indu Mirani and Namrata Bhawnani test their sales IQ, they emphatically state that Ranbir’s role of a Sardar is not an ‘item’ in the film and it is not because playing a Sardar is the in thing. Ranbir adds that though the year has been exceptionally kind to him, this is the one film he is really proud of.

Mani desires to cast Ranbir in his next?

Mani Ratnam is keen to cast Ranbir Kapoor in his next film Azan By Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 27, 2009)

Ranbir Kapoor has every reason to be happy. Post the success of his solo-starrer Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, he is being considering by top notch filmmakers. Mani Ratnam, is one of those considering Ranbir for their forthcoming film.

Mani, who is currently busy with Raavana, is already making plans for his next film, Azan, which is a pro-Muslim film. Although the director is still in the scripting process, he wants to cast Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role.

A source says, “After the release of Raavana in May next year, Mani will start working for Azan. Unlike the films releasing in Bollywood of late, which focuses on either Jehad or Islam, this is a pro-Muslim film which will portray Muslims in a positive light. The title of the film is the name of the lead character as he will be born during Azan (The Muslim summons to prayer, called by the muezzin from a minaret of a mosque five times a day).”

Mani is very impressed with Ranbir’s acting skills and is keen to have him on board. The source adds, “After seeing Ranbir’s progress as an actor, Mani sir is keen to have him in the lead role in the film. Ranbir has not played such a role till date and it is sure to be his breakthrough performance. Till now, Ranbir has played a young boy, a mature man (Bachna Ae Haseeno), a Sardar (Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year) and now seeing him portray More >

When fans failed to recognize Ranbir!

After Ranbir grows real whiskers for his role as a sardar in Rocket Singh, fans fail to recognise him and swarm around Deepika instead By Ashwini Deshmukh (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 13, 2009)

Ranbir Kapoor

Deepika Padukone

Ranbir’s new hairy avataar may not prove to be good for his ego. Last week, he was out for a quiet dinner with girlfriend Deepika Padukone. Fans approached her for autographs and pictures, but Ranbir was completely ignored. He has grown a beard and a moustache to play a sardar in Shimit Amin’s Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, which may have contributed to the lack of recognition.

Says a source present at the restaurant, “Ranbir and Deepika were at Taj Land’s End for a cozy dinner. People noticed Deepika immediately and gathered around her for autographs and also clicked pictures with her. Ranbir went unnoticed, thanks to his makeover. No one seemed to have recognised the star while they hounded Deepika, though Ranbir is equally popular and loved. It was quite amusing.”

Ranbir sure must have had a hearty laugh to see his efforts paying off. After all, he could’ve simply used fake facial hair, instead of taking the pains to grow it. He hung around watching while Deepika apparently got all the attention.

Ranbir and Deepika both remained unavailable for comment.

NEW YORK SHINES AND HOW!!

The weekend gone by was quite delightful! Who knew Friday’s release New York would do such a fantabulous job at the BO? I was of the opinion that the film may not take a huge opening considering the theme of the film and that it would attract people only from the 2nd day onwards. But the film managed to embark on a 65%+ opening on Friday which is a great feat! What made my smile wide was the almost 100% occupancy throughout the country on Sunday! In fact, I went for an early morning show of New York on Sunday in a multiplex and its tickets were sold out by Saturday afternoon! Where do you get to see anything like this nowadays?!

New York is a feather in the caps of all its lead actors, its director (Kabir Khan) and most importantly, for its producers, Yash Raj Films (YRF)! The production house was criticized and made fun of after it delivered string of flops like Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Aaja Nachle, Tashan, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic etc. But the success of SRK-starrer Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and now New York has restored back its prestige.

However, it is important that the Chopras now doesnt let this respect slip off like before. They’ll have to be more careful in choosing the scripts. Also, they should promote their films aggressively which they often don’t do. And because of this, many of their films had failed (Classic example is Roadside Romeo). However, they did well publicize New York, chiefly because they started the promotion More >
