I cry at the drop of a hat-Usha Uthup
0Awards have their own place in her heart, but it’s the love of her fans that keeps Usha Uthup going. Deepali S Dhingra gets chatting with the talented singer
BOMBAY TIMES (February 25, 2012)
It’s been quite a few days since the Filmfare Awards took place but it still doesn’t seem to have sunk in for Usha Uthup. The powerful singer with the unmistakable voice, who finally received an award for Best Playback for her song Darrling from Saat Khoon Maaf, still gets emotional when you speak to her about it. “I cry at the drop of a hat if I start talking about it! My grandchildren are threatening to carry a bucket of towels with me everywhere I go, so they can soak up my tears!” she laughs. She had gotten very emotional receiving the award on stage. “The scene was so full, so pregnant with excitement, I could have died out of happiness right there!” she says of her big moment.
For Usha, who has received so much mass acclaim wherever she goes, the award has come as a soothing balm. “I have been working for 42 years. I have my audience, my family with me. It was just that one gesture of appreciation from my fraternity that I craved for,” she says, adding, “My greatest award has always been people’s love for me. This award was the cherry on top of the cake.” Usha says she is often called to judge reality shows and there’s just one thing she tells newcomers. “You have to be honest, be original and believe in yourself. Success will come to you at some level. It may not necessarily More >

Over 200 crore loss in 2011 till now
0But Bollywood is still celebrating!
Meena Iyer (BOMBAY TIMES; May 4, 2011)
It is ironical that Bollywood sees mirth in gloom. Of the 67 odd films (including the dubbed ones) that released, only six made an impact at the box office. That is a meagre 10 per cent ratio. However, Bollywood trade pundits say that the first four months of 2011 have definitely been more lucrative than the corresponding period in 2010. And that is the reason why even cynics are smiling, not scowling.
Better than 2010 The January to April 2010 period saw major turkeys like Shahid Kapoor’s Chance Pe Dance, Priyanka Chopra’s Pyaar Impossible, Amitabh Bachchan’s Teen Patti and Abhay Deol’s Road Movie to mention a few. “This year we have been lucky,” says Vajir Singh, Editor of trade journal Box Office India. “First we broke the January jinx with No One Killed Jessica and the huge hit in Yamla Pagla Deewana. Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji and Dhobi Ghat sailed through. In the World Cup season too we managed to have a runaway hit in Tanu Weds Manu.
Hits versus flops Trade analyst Taran Adarsh (Bollywood Hungama) agrees that the producers did fear the ides of March; this month didn’t have any significant release but April brought some relief in Faltu that opened well. Taran also adds that 2011 most certainly brought a smile on the faces of some distributors. “While the number of flops far outnumbered the hits, the important thing to note is that the dark horses worked. An actor is never too young to experiment-Neil Nitin Mukesh
0BOMBAY TIMES (April 27, 2011)
Neil Nitin Mukesh doesn’t subscribe to the view that young actors should only do typical masala fare. He says, “By design I have managed to do exciting cinema from day one. Johnny Gaddaar is obviously not the typical launch vehicle for an actor. However, its success and the accolades that I managed for it motivated me more towards different cinema.” The actor’s oeuvre does include very exciting fare. Be it Kabir Khan’s New York; Pradeep Sarkar’s Lafangey Parindey, Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail or Vishal Bharadwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf, Neil has dared to do something hatke each time. Neil feels this generation of young actors, be it Ranbir Kapoor, Imran Khan, Shahid Kapoor or him, are willing to constantly push the envelope. The actor believes that the older generation took their time before dabbling in art house or middle-of-the-road films; but now he and his contemporaries are game to accepting challenges even though they’ve just about begun their careers. “The mind set of actors these days is to dare to do something different. An actor is never too young to experiment. While I am a great fan of commercial cinema; I love song and dance; I also feel the continuous urge to keep experimenting with filmmakers who move out of comfort zones and try and bring a new dimension to their work. That is why my list of filmmakers includes half a dozen National Award winning directors.”
7 Khoon Maaf’s debacle takes toll on Priyanka?
0The disappointing reception to 7 Khoon Maaf has had a domino effect on Priyanka Chopra’s career and emotional life
Subhash K Jha / Vickey Lalwani / Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 25, 2011)
Bollywood is a natural catastrophe-prone zone, a hazard that dawn on every Friday of the week.
The lukewarm reception and box-office disappointment of 7 Khoon Maaf has particularly taken a toll on its star Priyanka Chopra.
Not only is she not going to be seen in Vishal Bhardwaj’s next, but the actress has also escaped the backlash by taking the first flight out of Bombay, to the United States. Some are calling it an ‘emotional rehab’.
The director of 7 Khoon Maaf, Vishal Bhardwaj, and actress Priyanka Chopra seemed like a perfect director-and-muse combination with the success of Kaminey (2009).
However, 7 Khoon Maaf turned out to be a commercial and critical turkey; Bhardwaj didn’t transform into India’s Hitchcock and Chopra could not become its Janet Leigh or Kim Novak.
Pre-7KM Chops was the only name on Bhardwaj’s list for his adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller 2 States, starring Shah Rukh Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiawala.
This now has changed. Bhardwaj and Nadiawala are now going a different direction, opening up the role to other possible actresses.
A source tells us, “Bhardwaj’s favourite, Priyanka was a hot contender but she has just delivered a dud with him.
She was finalized for the part since SRK and she get along like a house on fire but More >
Movie Review: 7 KHOON MAAF by FENIL SETA
0Vishal Bhardwaj! The very name is enough to get viewers to theatres. After all, every film of his (Makdee, Maqbool, Omkara, Blue Umbrella, Kaminey, Ishqiya) and also his short film (Blood Brothers) has managed to successfully engage and provide high-octane entertainment as well as meaningful cinema. Hence, 7 Khoon Maaf was definitely on the ‘must-watch’ list of almost every moviegoer. And that was also not only because of Bhardwaj’s successful track record but also because 7 Khoon Maaf had a deadly theme-a woman marrying multiple times and killing all her husband’s! The star cast and the songs were like an icing on the cake! However, 7 Khoon Maaf does have its moments but unfortunately falters at several places. At places, it’s the execution that’s erratic and at places, it’s the writing that’s flawed. What remains consistent is the performance of Priyanka and of course, the murders!
The story of the movie: Susanna (Priyanka Chopra) is a beautiful lady any man would die for! And sure enough, nearly half a dozen husbands of hers are already dead! They were:
1. Major Edwin Rodrigues (Neil Nitin Mukesh): Suave and dashing. But also possessive and chauvinist
2. Jimmy Stetson (John Abraham): An upcoming musical sensation who turns out to be evil
3. Wasiullah Khan (Irrfan Khan): The strangest husband of Sussanna! A poet who seems so innocent and sweet to everyone, but is completely opposite on the bed
4. Nicoloi Vronsky (Aleksandr Dyachenko): He has More >

Neil Nitin Mukesh on his contemporaries, Ranbir and Imran, on movies and the Friday jitters
Roshni K Olivera | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; February 23, 2011)
He’s not married in real life, but Neil Nitin Mukesh has emerged as one of the best husbands! Well, we are referring to the rave reviews the actor’s been getting for his performance as the mean crippled army officer in 7 Khoon Maaf. Neil, who’s done diverse roles, is constantly looking for challenges, he tells BT in a candid chat. Excerpts…
What prompted you to take up the role of Major Rodrigues, one of Priyanka Chopra’s many husbands, in 7 Khoon Maaf?
Vishal Bhardwaj is a director every actor wants to work with. The moment he called me, I just jumped and was sure that I wanted to be part of the film. I’ve read Ruskin Bond’s story and when I read my character, I instantly knew that there was a lot of scope for me; the character has so many layers. Everything just fell into place and I’m glad to be part of this film.
Being a part of a multi-starrer is less stressful because the reponsibility is shared…
In fact it’s not! It’s more stressful because you are among many and you have to make an impact for your performance to be spoken about. In a solo-hero film, all the attention is on you anyway.
So how do you cope with the Friday jitters?
Everyone feels a bit jittery, it’s only natural because billions will be watching you again. But I’m quite calm before my release… I believe what’s More >
7 Khoon Maaf collects 11.53 cr in opening weekend
0- By Taran Adarsh, February 21, 2011 – 13:21 IST
7 KHOON MAAF collected approx. Rs. 11.53 cr nett in its opening weekend, which is below the mark. The breakup:- Fri 3.30 cr, Sat 3.51, Sun 4.72 cr. The film started slow on Friday, showed no major jump on Saturday, but was better on Sunday. However, given the number of screens in circulation, besides no major opposition to contend with, the film should’ve grossed at least Rs. 15 cr + in its first three days.

7 Khoon Maaf opens to lukewarm response
0- By Taran Adarsh, February 18, 2011 – 17:10 IST
After PATIALA HOUSE last Friday, 7 KHOON MAAF opened to a thanda response across the country this morning. The business was shockingly low at single screens [8% to 10%], but slightly better at multiplexes [15% to 20%]. In fact, the industry was hopeful that 7 KHOON MAAF would garner 50% to 60% start at plexes due to three factors: [i] The song ‘Darling’ has become extremely popular, [ii] The terrific pre-release promotions and [iii] The credibility of Vishal Bhardwaj and Priyanka Chopra. But the poor figures, even at plexes, came as a shocker.
The audience feedback seems mixed, in fact completely in sync with what this writer wrote in the review ["the film will meet with diverse reactions - some will fancy it, while some will abhor it."]. It remains to be seen if the film is able to withstand the tough opposition posed by the World Cup cricket matches, which commence non-stop from tomorrow [Saturday] onwards.

The film has a budget of around 24-25 crore and 6-7 cr and P&A costs. It has been sold in Mumbai circuit and a couple other circuits fetching 9 crore in total wherever sold. The satellite and music rights has given good returns so recovery is possible for makers but theatrical business is unlikely to be strong due to dark theme and not encouraging reports.

Priyanka livid with Vishal?
0When ordered to stay in Mumbai to promote Saat Khoon Maaf instead of accompanying the director for its screening in Berlin, the actress had an argument with him
Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 19, 2011)
As Saat Khoon Maaf begins its box-office journey today, rumours already suggest that Vishal Bhardwaj has decided to work with Priyanka Chopra again in his next.
That Vishal and Priyanka had a major difference of opinion earlier this week is thus very shocking. What went wrong?
Apparently, Priyanka, who has been promoting the film, was very keen to join Vishal when he left for the Berlin Film Festival on Wednesday.
Says a source, “Priyanka really wanted to be in Berlin. After all, Saat Khoon Maaf is as much her film as Vishal’s. She’s the face of the film, which was being screened in the ‘panorama section’ of the Festival.
This was the film’s first screening at an international forum. Naturally, she wanted to be with Vishal at this momentous occasion.”
Vishal, they say, put his foot down and chose not to take Piggy while arguing that she could not leave Mumbai at the time of the release, especially when last-minute promotions had to be in full swing.
Says a source, “Priyanka reasoned with Vishal. She offered to intensify the publicity and finish everything in two days prior to the release date, so she could be in Berlin for the festival.
Even Vishal’s wife Rekha Bhardwaj intervened on Priyanka’s behalf and tried coaxing him to let her More >
