Game is absolutely original-Abhinay Deo

By Joginder Tuteja, April 2, 2011 – 10:26 IST

A hot-shot professional when it comes to the world of advertising, Abhinay Deo is not new to going behind the camera. Boasting of 14 years of experience when it comes to advertising, making a full length feature film was an obvious next step for Abhinay. His Game has just released and naturally, Abhinay is looking forward to reactions for his first ever big screen outing. In a conversation with Joginder Tuteja, Abhinay talks about what went in his mind when he started working on the film.

A slick action thriller with a suspense drama to match – Is it just the right kind of recipe you wanted to put together for Game? Yes, though I would prefer to get the ‘suspense’ part earlier in the statement (smiles). It is basically a suspense film with action, thrills and drama following a little behind. Basically I wanted the genre of whodunit to be back in Bollywood.

I am sure you would have been inspired by the 60s when such films were in vogue both in Bollywood as well as Hollywood. Exactly. Think whodunits and remember Teesri Manzil. Obviously I too was influenced as a child. In fact there have been so many incredible murder mysteries that have originated out of Bollywood. I wanted to bring it all back in a fresh new packaging. This is where styling and cutting edge treatment came into picture. As for action, Game doesn’t have it in abundance but wherever it does feature, it leaves a mark. There is a definite finesse More >

Sonam bruised on sets of Players

Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 17, 2010)

It seems Sonam Kapoor is falling off time and again, which has resulted in her getting hurt. Sonam was shooting a song, choreographed by Bosco-Ceaser, with Abhishek Bachchan in Goa for Abbas-Mustan’s Players.

A source from the unit reveals, “In the song, Sonam is suppose to fall off from the stage on her hand, and unfortunately, it didn’t happen as the choreographer wanted. They made her fall off the stage over 17 times, to get the shot correctly. Result- Sonam ended up bruising her hand.”

The source adds, “Apart from falling and bruising herself, Sonam barely slept, since it had been raining all day long and that disrupted the shooting schedule. To get the perfect lights she had to wake up at 3am to deliver the shot.”

Krishna Shah plans to sell script of Baiju-The Gypsy

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, October 20, 2010 – 16:52 IST

Krishna Shah, Hollywood writer, director and producer is putting his long talked of project Baiju- The Gypsy on the boards again. Baiju- The Gypsy is a period fiction story set during the Mogul era of 16th Century. On one level, it is a story of contest – a contest between two great singers of the era. Baiju Bawara, a young gypsy and the singer from the soul and Miya Tansen, one of the nine jewels of Akbar’s court.

The script is touted to be a visual treat filled with special effects. The legends of classical Indian music may or may not bear the scrutiny of science today, but it was widely believed that Tansen could start a fire with his singing of Raga Deepak, and Baiju could bring down rain by his improvised rendition of the Malhar chant.

Shah shelved plans to produce Baiju-The Gypsy last year to work full time on his epic biopic Mother: The Indira Gandhi Story.

Apparently, A.R. Rahman in an interview once said that Krishna Shah’ Baiju-The Gypsy was one of the most cherished scripts he had read and was disappointed when it was put on hold. “In fact, Rahman had insisted on me contacting Aamir for the role of Baiju. Even offered to call him. Somehow, things did not work out,” says Shah.

Shah now wants to sell the script to a director passionate enough to see this story through to the screen.

Apoorva Lakhia-the antagonist in Knock Out

By Subhash K. Jha, August 17, 2010 – 10:09 IST

var iurl ='http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href='+document.location+'&show_faces=false'; document.getElementById('fblike').src=iurl; // ]]> It looks like recession has given Bollywood directors a chance to live out their acting fantasies. The season of directors turning actors is upon us full-blast. After a full-fledged debut as leading men by Farhan Akhtar and Rituparno Ghosh and cameos by Sudhir Mishra (Traffic Signal), Karan Johar (Luck By Chance) and Anurag Kashyap (Luck By Chance), it is Apoorva Lakhia’s turn.

Unlike his colleagues, Lakhia will be seen as a villain in buddy Sanjay Dutt’s film Knock Out. Ironically, he plays the guy who wants to kill Dutt.

He plays what a source from the film’s unit describes as, “The villain, a highly scientific very precise killer who uses a combination of killer squads, sophisticated technology and razor-sharp mind to locate and liquidate Sanjay Dutt…Lakhia’s character turns the tables on Sanju so quickly and with lethal efficiency. His character is volatile and unpredictable. Lakhia takes the audience to a gripping climax where he fights it out with Sanju.”

According to sources from Knock Out, Lakhia’s is one of the best villainous roles seen till now. When asked about it, the director, currently keeping low because of recession and the ensuing aridity of movies on the floors, says, “Where did you hear about this? I’m really not at liberty to talk about it.

Vidya Balan answers 10 questions to BT

Garima Sharma | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 27, 2010)

Vidya Balan has a lot happening in her life right now. She’s the latest muse of M F Husain and has also been voted as the most appropriate bride for Rahul Gandhi. But it’s the romantic SRK and lover boy Salman Khan, Vidya hopes will woo her someday…

Last year’s been a joyride professionally. How was it personally? I can’t draw a line between my personal and professional lives. My profession gives me great joy in my personal life.

Is it time now for a break? I’ve been on a break past few weeks, since I came back from Delhi after the shoot of No One Killed Jessica. I’ve been helping decorate my new house, reading, watching films, meeting friends and going on dates.

Dates? No, I’m kidding. I just wish, I just said aise hi. Honestly, there’s nothing.

Okay, so how many boys do you reject every day? I wish I had such good fortune. But, where are the boys, really?

A recent survey said that you are the most appropriate bride for Rahul Gandhi, provided he buys you a lifetime’s supply of Sabyasachi sarees… If that happens, I won’t wave at people. I’ll just raise The Hand. But I’m not thinking of marriage right now. It’s not even on the agenda because I haven’t met anyone who has inspired that in me. First, I need to be with someone for a while and have to romance without the bindings of marriage.

What kind of romance? Long drives with music that I enjoy in the More >

Size matters, John

When Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s friends hid John Abraham’s bag of clothes, the actor was forced to wear a borrowed ill-fitting kurta for the wedding

Vickey Lalwani and Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 20, 2010)

MS Dhoni and John Abraham might have sworn eternal friendship to one another but if John were asked to extend it to Dhoni’s friends, he would probably think twice. Thanks to these friends, John had to face a lot of embarrassment at Dhoni’s Dehradun wedding on July 4 this year.

Look at this picture carefully. When you get past John’s exhausted, defeated look, you notice his ill-fitting kurta, that’s at least two sizes larger than required. Considering he doesn’t have a paunch to hide, why would the actor wear a loose kurta at his best friend’s wedding? Read on.

John’s girlfriend Bipasha Basu could not make it to Dhoni’s wedding (as an afterthought, John probably thanks his stars for that). John flew to Dehradun with Dhoni’s teammate Piyush Chawla. Not in his wildest dreams had he imagined what lay in store for him.

On reaching the venue, John discovered that his bag with clothes was missing. A source says, “John was terribly worried. He searched for his bag everywhere but could not find it.”

Here’s what had happened. Dhoni’s friends, who were playing a prank on John, hid his bag. The source says, “They decided to hide his bag for a while and More >

Lolo’s dieting, Bebo’s eating!

The Kapoor kudis are both on diet…

MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; June 16, 2010)

Spotted: Karisma Kapoor dressed in a bright red shirt, with kohl-lined eyes, huge solitaries blazing her ears, ordering herself a fancy meal at a new hip roadside cafe on Pali Hill.

Lolo had stepped out alone, yes, minus her two kids and her husband Sanjay Kapur. Her intention was simple — to spoil herself silly. As the rain poured down hard outside, Lolo decided to dig into a meal of her choice.

The reason this actress, who is usually very careful with what she eats, was eating to her heart’s content is because she goes into a strict diet for the next 11 days. On June 25, when Lolo turns 36, she wants to get into the designer outfit her younger sister Kareena has ordered for her.

While Lolo was dining alone at her favourite food joint, Bebo who is shooting Golmaal-3 in Hyderabad, was sulking. “God I’m missing Mumbai and I’m missing spending time with Lolo and my nephew,” she said.

Bebo who calls Karisma her size zero inspiration, had a surprise revelation to make. “For once, things are the exact opposite for the two of us. Lolo is trying to lose her post-natal fat; and I’m trying to put on a little weight. I want to be perfectly rounded. I’m bored of being too thin. And I actually enjoy eating at this neighbourhood cafe where you bumped into Lolo.”

Lisa Ray battles cancer successfully

A fully healed Lisa Ray is back on the international film circuit, will visit India soon By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 23, 2010)

Lisa Ray has successfully battled cancer. Proof of how well she has reclaimed her health was there for all to see on April 20 when she not only walked the red carpet at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles for her new film Cooking With Stella, she even ran indoors when it suddenly began to rain on the red carpet.

Recounts her director Dilip Mehta ,”The red carpet ceremony had to be shifted inside the Arclight Theater complex since it had started to rain. Our lovely warrior Lisa shone on the red carpet. She could have knocked you down with a feather. I’m in awe of her strength of character and she continues to be a beacon of hope.”

Apparently a number of filmmakers and actors were unable to show up because of the volcanic-ash situation in Europe. Says Dilip, “Fortunately, Lisa came in from Toronto and I came in via Bangkok. I think this was Lisa’s first red carpet appearance since the Toronto Festival in October 2009. She looked radiant and so chic.”

Lisa herself is in an upbeat mood and even planning a trip to India. “Our LA premiere was very satisfying. I should be back in India soon as well.”

Prateik to play lead in Goldie Behl’s next

By Subhash K. Jha, February 16, 2010 – 09:52 IST

Now Prateik and not Abhishek Bachchan will pay the lead in Goldie’s film.

Shooting in the Mumbai streets in movies about life in the metropolis has become a way of life for Prateik Babbar. Last month he shot for Raghav Dar’s My Friend Pinto on the Mumbai streets. Now during the whole of July Prateik will be on the streets of Mumbai shooting in the pelting rain for a thriller set in the monsoon.

Remember Smita Patil’s celebrated song in the rain ‘Aaj Rapat Jayen‘ with Amitabh Bachchan in Namak Halal? Apparently, Smita was so unhappy doing a rain song that she cried after she came home.

One hopes Prateik likes the rain more. Goldie will shoot the entire film tentatively entitled Copycat in the rains.

Says the director, “It’s gritty realistic romantic thriller set on the streets of Mumbai during the rains. We’ll be shooting from July through the monsoon.”

Goldie didn’t want artificial studio rains for the film. But he did want Prateik for the lead. Says Goldie, “There’s something special about that boy, besides the fact that he looks so much like his mother. He suits the role perfectly.”

A new girl will star opposite Prateik. A short-list of hopefuls has been drawn up and Goldie would take his best-friend and almost-brother Abhishek’s help to choose the finalist for the female lead.
