Priyadarshini RaoDespite having carved a name for herself as a fashion designer of repute in the past 16 years, Priyadarshini Rao has always stayed out of the limelight. She says, “The decision to stay relatively aloof grew from the fact that I never did think much of the space occupied by so-called fashion celebs. Too much vacuous talk without substance only tends to downgrade your talent. I am a designer because I enjoy making clothes. And if my work speaks for itself, I find that it is the best form of appreciation.”
Her signature style is clean-cuts as she says her sense of dressing has always been about being comfortable in your skin. Coming to her collection for the Mumbai Fashion Week, Priyardarshini says this season she’s worked on an all-encompassing collection that covers a large spectrum of colours and styles. “The underlying boho vibe is very luxurious and the textiles are worked upon and rich in colour. I’ve created a wardrobe for the urban working woman. Hemlines move from above the knee till floor length and separates such as jackets, vests, dresses, mix together to create an overall eclectic feel,” she explains.
Ask her if she has a showstopper and the designer’s quick to reply, “No. As a rule, I never use celebs as showstoppers. However this time, I will have a very different opening and closing for my show. This is going to be the surprise factor of the show!”

A curvy Vidya Balan has lost weight and now she can’t fit into her own designer outfits. She has not only lost weight, but clothes worth Rs three lakh

Vidya Balan has weighty issues on her mind. First, she was the favourite whipping girl of every fashion critic in town. To make sure that she isn’t blamed for any more fashion disasters, she has shed considerable weight. This has deflated her curves and put her in a quandary: what to do with the fabulous designer clothes she had invested in while in her meaty, curvy avatar? She loses three lakh worth of clothes, as not every outfit can be altered.
Vidya has been forced to discard clothes that people would kill for: designer outfits from Sabysachi, Priyadarshini Rao and Abu Sandeep. So while she was a healthier size, she had a big problem. Now that’s she’s thinner, she still has a big problem. A problem worth Rs three lakh. Sigh, there’s just no winning.
A source said, “Vidya has lost four inches from the top and three inches from the waist. The clothes no longer fit her. It is possible to alter only a few outfits, but the rest have to be discarded. The loss amounts to the tune of Rs three lakh.”
That makes every inch that Vidya shed from her waist worth a lakh. Makes for an expensive weight loss programme, we think.
