Shanghai surprises Bollywood trade gurus

Despite doomsday predictions, with weekend collections of approximately Rs 12 crore, Dibakar Banerjee’s film is inching towards recovering its costs

Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai had critics going gaga over it. Though, trade pundits had hinted that the film may not get a blockbuster opening that is expected from an Emraan Hashmi venture, the weekend collection of approximately Rs 12 crore may force them to change their minds. In fact, trade analyst Amod Mehra predicted, “Shanghai will break even. That is for sure.”

However, according to the makers, the film has already recovered its cost. Distributor Rajesh Thadani, for one says it is the satellite rights that have helped its cause. “Though theatrical response to the film is not up to the mark, the satellite rights have helped it sail through,” said Thadani.

Mirror has learnt that the satellite rights of Shanghai have been sold for Rs 8 crore and the music rights for Rs 2.75 crore. Also, 20 per cent of theatrical rights have been sold for Rs 4 crore.

The producers claim that the film was made on a tight budget of Rs 19.5 crore. When asked how they managed to rope in Emraan Hashmi, Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Prosenjeet Chatterjee on such meager monies, producer Priya Sreedharan explained, “It is not right to compare a small movie to a big budget film. They have all done it for us for a good price. We are glad to have recovered costs.”

Women’s on top in Shanghai

A director shares a special bond with his film, just like a mother with her child. Thus, when it comes when it comes to nuturing his baby (read editing the film), a filmmaker is mostly blinded by emotions and is unable to do so logically.

The same holds true for the talented director Dibakar Banerjee. But if the director has succeeded in shaping Shanghai just right, it is thanks to the four talented women in his life — Priya Sreedharan, the producer, Urmi Juvekar, co-writer, Vandana Kataria, the production designer and Namrata Rao, the editor.

Banerjee attributes his success to these four women. The director admits, “My success story are these four talented women. They together help create, maintain and ruthlessly cut my film to bring it to the present shape.”

The director can’t imagine what the work environment and organisational skills would be without them. He adds, “One day, while working, I suddenly realised that I have more women than men in my team. And they make a significant contribution to my films. In fact, the only male member in our team is our production executive. Even my director of photography is a male, but he is the handsome guy from Greece.”

Talking further about the women in his work life, he says, “Working closely with them I have realised that women handle work very systematically. And they have excellent communication skills and sound knowledge to put across information in the right fashion. There is a More >

Turn on, tune in, drop out… LSD breaks all norms of mainstream filmmaking. Meenal Baghel meets its director Dibakar Bannerjee

By Meenal Baghel (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 21, 2010)

// // // The sign outside Dibakar Bannerjee’s office reads: Please do not smoke in the corridor. If you must burn your lungs, walk a few steps down.

Inside the small, unpretentious office, where Bannerjee is the boss, he lights up ever so frequently.

The 38-year-old director, Bollywood’s flavour of the month, has just returned from Delhi where he picked up a national award for his 2008 film Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye, and also to visit his parents.

The influence of his growing up years in Delhi, first in the bustling Karol Bagh, then Ashok Vihar, saturate his work, making him one of the finest chroniclers of contemporary Delhi culture. His observation of a certain breed of Delhi women - talkative, with an in-your-face sensuality, and yet exuding vulnerability - is particularly astute.

But he does not want to be seen as a ‘Delhi filmmaker.’

“I think with Love, Sex Aur Dhokha (quirkily acronymed LSD) I have made a more universal film which could be located anywhere in India…I need to break out of this Delhi stamp.”

The director, it emerges over the course of the interview, is wary of any form of straight-jacketing and is very much his own man, a bit of an anomaly in Bollywood, where, despite the patina of sophistication, the puppy, jhappi, More >
