Movie Review: LOVE KHICHDI by TARAN ADARSH
0By Taran Adarsh, August 28, 2009 – 11:30 IST
Try stretching a rubber band beyond a point and it’s bound to snap. Try stretching a waferthin story and it’s bound to blow apart too. That’s precisely the problem with LOVE KHICHDI. Frankly, LOVE KHICHDI is a collage of romantic moments assembled by director Srinivas Bhashyam.
LOVE KHICHDI looks at the various women who flit in and out of the protagonist’s life. It’s a metro-centric concept that could’ve worked well if [a] the assorted women wouldn’t appear and disappear randomly and [b] the narrative had been limited to 1.30 hours, instead of 2 + hours.
These two factors make this khichdi far from appetising.
BY BOLLYWOOD HUNGAMA.COMVir [Randeep Hooda], a bachelor from a small town, works as a chef in a hotel in Mumbai; a handsome, charming and macho man who really needs to grow up.
Vir flirts with, yeans for, lusts after and is intimidated by one beautiful woman after another. From his man-hating maid Shanta Bai [Sonali Kulkarni], whom he ogles as she wipes his floor to the man-eating Nafisa [Kalpana Pandit], the powerful call-center executive… from the beauty-with-brains Sharmishta [Rituparna Sengupta] to the pretty and playful Parminder [Divya Dutta], Vir is drawn to them all.
All along, he is supported by his buddy, Sandhya [Sada], whom he takes for granted till it’s too late.

Govinda changed lyrics of Amrita's song in Life Partner?
0By Joginder Tuteja, August 19, 2009 – 12:15 IST
During the last couple of years, there have been countless stories around Govinda and his superstitions that have made the rounds. Whether it is shooting with a hen or getting the dialogues changed at the last minute, there have been quite a few interesting anecdotes that have made headlines. Now add one more to the list.
Believe it or not but this time around, what got the axe were the lyrics of ‘Poorza Poorza‘, an item number picturised on Amrita Rao for Govinda’s Life Partner. The lyricist who had to bear the brunt? Kumaar, who has in the past has written for quite a few films coming from the house of Bhatts and is trying to establish himself in the industry.
Informs a source attached to Life Partner, “Govinda was unhappy with some of the words in ‘Poorza Poorza‘ which he believed came with a negative connotation. The original lyrics go as ‘Mare Hum, Jab Seene Se Dil Gaya, Hai Poorza Poorza Hil Gaya; Jab Poorza Poorza Hil Gaya, To Dum Sa Nikal Gaya‘. He had problems with ‘Mare Hum’, ‘Seene Se Dil Gaya’ & ‘Dum Sa Nikal Gaya‘. He felt that this was clear indication of death and wanted to avoid them as a part of the song by all means.”
It was a Code Red situation for the entire team of Life Partner, including composer Pritam, and the song had to be changed pronto. Though the song in the CD still appears as per the original recording, the lyrics that find a place in the final print of the film that has just released over the More >
Movie Review: LIFE PARTNER by FENIL SETA
0A month and a half back, I had mentioned in my Kambakkht Ishq review as to how it’s disgusting to see so many shoddy entertainers being released this year. But then a week late came the entertaining Sankat City which brought a respite. And Life Partner, released a week back, also manages to entertain and bring a smile, thankfully. This sweet-n-simple film also teaches some lessons on love and marriage. More about it later!
The story of the movie: Karan (Fardeen Khan), Bhavesh (Tusshar Kapoor) and Jeet (Govinda) are three friends based in Cape Town. Karan works in bank and is in love with the ‘untalented’ Sanjana (Genelia D’Souza), a spoilt daughter of a rich man (Anupam Kher). Bhavesh, on the other hand, doesn’t feel the need to date and believes in arranged marriage. He is an obedient son of a disciplinarian (Darshan Jariwala) and has reserved all his romance for his wife. He finally meets the women of his dreams, Prachi (Prachi Desai), daughter of a multi-millionaire (Vikram Gokhale). And Jeet is a divorce lawyer who can convince anyone to get divorced within minutes! In short, he was world’s best divorce lawyer! He doesn’t believe in the institution of marriage at all. He feels that ‘divorce ki sabse badi wajah hai shaadi’! He persuades Karan and Bhavesh and advices them not to fall into the trap of marriage. But they don’t pay any heed and get married to their women. The later part of the film is all about the problems the newly-wedded couples have to face.

Bollywood goes out of Mumbai to catch Kaminey!
0SUBHASH K JHA (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 17, 2009)
Kaminey
So what if Mumbaiites couldn’t catch Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey over the long weekend because swine flu played spoilsport? Known for their never-say-die attitude, Mumbaites headed to theatres outside the city to watch the season’s most awaited film. Even industrywallahs couldn’t resist watching the film as soon as possible even if it meant travelling a long distance. Music composer Pritam and director Anurag Singh (Dil Bole Hadippa!) had a rollicking time in Nasik where they watched Kaminey on Friday.
Pritam, who is a huge Vishal Bhardwaj fan, said, “I didn’t want to miss Kaminey for anything in the world. I think Vishal is a fantastic filmmaker and music composer. I couldn’t wait to see how he has treated the music in Kaminey.” Meanwhile, good friends Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra hosted their own special preview of Kaminey on Sunday evening at Yash Raj Studios where they had personally invited their friends from the industry. - SKJ
Vipul makes Pritam take an anti-plagiarism vow!
0Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshay Kumar
Pritam may be hot property in Bollywood, but he got there with a little ‘help’ from other bands that he has generously ‘borrowed’ from. Now his past is coming back to bite him as he has made his producer Vipul Shah wary, lest he lands the producer into legal tangles. As a safeguard, Vipul has made Pritam sign an indemnity clause for the music of his film Action Replay, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshay Kumar. This is virtually unheard of in an industry that is particularly lax about copyright infringement.
Vipul Shah has become very cautious about derivative material in his films especially after his victory in court against Shree Venkatesh Films who have been accused of lifting material from Namastey London for a Bengali film, Poran Jai Joliya Re. To avoid any potential disasters that might blow up in his face with his next film, Action Replay, the filmmaker is not taking any chances. Given Pritam’s track record, the composer is quite the candidate who is likely to trigger the explosion.
Vipul confirmed, “I have taken a written indemnity from our music composer Pritam that not a single song in Action Replay is a copy. How will I know if he takes something from a Chinese, Taiwanese or Syrian song?”

Jab We Met to be remade in Tamil!
0Jab We Met
When Tamil director Kannan decided to remake Imtiaz Ali’s Shahid-Kapoor-Kareena Kapoor starrer Jab We Met, the soft-spoken and self-deprecating director was guardedly kicked by the idea. Imtiaz had said then, “I’m sure it will be an interesting take.” Even though Imtiaz insisted that he had left Jab We Met far behind and he got busy with his third film, he had mentioned on a number of occasions that given a chance, he would set right all the flaws in Jab We Met, which had Shahid and Kareena playing the much-loved Aditya and Geet respectively. While he can’t make any changes to his much-loved film, he has decided to make all the desired changes in the Tamil remake, Kanden Kadhalai.
The changes aren’t only limited to the storyline of the film. The songs are different too. Imtiaz, currently in Chennai for the music release of Kanden Kadhalai, says, “What I find interesting is that the songs composed by Vidya Sagar for Kanden Kadhalai are entirely different from what Pritam did for Jab We Met.”
Inspired by the new sounds, Imtiaz will provide inputs for Kanden Kadhalai and make it a new experience rather than just an extension of Jab We Met. Imtiaz says, “I’m here in Chennai for the music release of the film. I’ve asked them to let me watch portions of the Tamil More >
Get ready for some non-bhangra songs from YRF!
0The music of the untitled Yash Raj film starring Shahid Kapoor and Anushka Sharma is giving Pritam sleepless nights. Thankfully, he has been ordered to stay off the cliché bhangra numbers
By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 10, 2009)Shahid Kapoor
Although the Shahid Kapoor-Anushka Sharma untitled Yash Raj film has completed one major schedule in Hyderabad, the film’s music score is not in place yet.
A source said, “The film has so far been shot without any songs. That’s because producer Aditya Chopra, director Parmeet Sethi and music composer Pritam Chakraborty cannot see eye-to-eye on any of the songs and music that Pritam has composed for the film.”
The music of the film requires a rich, retro feel. “Parmeet Sethi’s film is set in the 1990s. Aditya Chopra wanted a distinct and directly-sourced reference to the sound and music of that decade. Everyone thought Michael Jackson and his songs like Billy Jean and Beat It would be sound reference points,” added the source.
Apparently, the whole experience with the sound and texture of the 1990s has fallen apart. The retro music, it is felt, wouldn’t work for youngsters today unless it’s yoked to a totally contemporary idiom, like the Twist track in Love Aaj Kal. The entire music composed so far has been scrapped and Pritam has been told to put on his thinking cap fast.
Meanwhile, Sethi continues shooting without the songs. It has been decided that all the songs will be shot on Bangkok and the US after More >
Pritam scrapped and re-did the entire Love Aaj Kal score
0By Subhash K. Jha, August 8, 2009 – 11:45 IST
We’ve heard bits and pieces and even entire songs from films being scrapped. But Love Aaj Kal (LAK) takes the cake. While the recession and the multiplex strike proved a curse for the rest of the industry, it proved a blessing for Pritam. He was able to scrap and re-do the entire score.
Says Pritam, “I saw the film with Imtiaz and my lyricist Irshad Kamal in January. I was horrified. I very bluntly told Imtiaz the music in LAK was not working. You have to understand, Imtiaz is the most chilled-out guy. He didn’t flinch when I told him this. He immediately told me to do what had to be done.”
The first thing that needed to be changed in the soundtrack was the absence of a love ballad. Says Pritam, “LAK was a love story and there was no love song! Imtiaz wanted to know where it could fit in. I suggested we put it in the flashback in the Kolkata portion. Imtiaz was in Kolkata and was supposed to fly to Delhi to shoot ‘Chor Bazaari‘ in a couple of days. I flew to Kolkata and gave him a love song. He didn’t like it. Then I came up with ‘Aaj Din Chadhiya‘…over the phone! In fact most of tunes were played by me and approved by Imtiaz on the phone. That includes ‘Chor Bazaari‘,” reveals Pritam.
The ballad ‘Main Kya Hoon‘ was also altered. “It was earlier designed as a fast-paced go-for-the-kill ballad. But then I changed the pace and profile of the number.”
Barring ‘Twist‘, the entire score was scrapped and redone just a few months ago. More >
Movie Review: LOVE AAJ KAL by FENIL SETA
0Very rarely do you come across a film which fulfills all your expectations and in fact, provides more than expected. This year, however, we were mostly bombarded with some pathetic flicks. But behold as Love Aaj Kal has arrived! The film sees love and relationships in a new light but what works big time is its terrific execution and smart storytelling. Love Aaj Kal is surely one of the most refreshing romantic flicks to come out of Bollywood!
The story of the movie: Jai (Saif Ali Khan) and Meera (Deepika Padukone) is a modern-day couple based in London. They are always together but are clueless whether they can be categorized as ‘boyfriend-girlfriend’! Meera gets an opportunity to move to Delhi which she doesn’t want to miss while Jai is soon going to be at San Francisco. Jai and Meera conclude that their long-distance relationship won’t work and thus, decide to break-up (happily). At this point, Jai comes across veteran Veer Singh (Rishi Kapoor) who is shocked to see how Jai treats relationships and break them so easily. He is of the view that the present generation can’t understand love. Love is that trap in which he got entangled 4 decades back when he was the dashing and cool Delhiite Veer (played by Saif again) and when he came across Harleen Kaur (Giselle Monteiro). Jai laughs at Veer as to how he had travelled thousand kilometers from Delhi to Calcutta just to catch a glimpse of Harleen.

'We Twist' was originally a Singh is Kinng track!
0The Twist song from Love Aaj Kal
The popular track, Twist, in Love Aaj Kal is on top of the charts right now. However, originally Pritam had hoped that the song would have been part of Singh Is Kinng. The rhythm of the song was made for Singh Is Kinng, but the last minute decision to bring in Snoop Dogg, knocked the song off their soundtrack. When Pritam made Imtiaz Ali listen to the song, he loved it.
Our source said, “There wasn’t room for one more track when Snoop Dogg’s song was included. Vipul requested Pritam to keep the song for his forthcoming film. However, when Singh Is Kinng was wrapping up, Pritam was very busy with the music sittings of Love Aaj Kal and that’s when he made Imtiaz listen to the song. Imtiaz loved it and the song was recorded. Incidentally, the Naagin been was added in the song for Love Aaj Kal, as it represented the kal in the song.”
Snoop Dogg track from Singh is Kinng
Imtiaz said, “When I heard the song, the entire rhythm was ready. I am not aware if the song was meant for Singh Is Kinng.”
Pritam talked about how Twist ended up in Love Aaj Kal. He said, “I desperately attempted to include Twist in Singh Is Kinng. Normally, we always make the promotional track at the end of the film and we give it our best shot. Both Vipulbhai and Aneesbhai loved the More >
