Aamir tones down emotional quotient of his TV show?

The star is reworking his TV pilot project after feedback that the show was turning into a ‘kerchief wringer

Mehul S Thakkar (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 25, 2011)

Aamir Khan seems to have taken his Mr Perfectionist tag too seriously. The actor-filmmaker and now television host has decided to rework the pilot for his upcoming television production since his close friends and staff found it a little too emotional.

A source informed Mumbai Mirror, “It is a norm in the TV industry that first a pilot is shot and edited and showed to the people concerned for proper feedback. Aamir did the same thing and showed it to his close friends and staff to get their reaction.

He was told that he is getting too emotional which is not looking too well. Aamir took this advice seriously. He has now asked his creative team to re-work on the emotional quotient of the show.”

An official announcement about the show was made last Saturday but neither Aamir nor the channel revealed the name or the concept of the show.

“Aamir, in a recent press conference confessed that it is going to be one of the most challenging roles he has ever essayed – more complex than his performances in Taare Zaamen Par or more recently Dhobi Ghat. He is very emotional about the show. In fact, when a journalist asked him to explain about the concept, he spoke at length and was seen getting emotional then as well,” added the source.

In fact, to put his emotional show together, Aamir Khan had opened the doors of his More >

In 2004, she was a Page 3 regular. In 2011, she has accused Dibakar Banerjee of asking her to lift her T-shirt so that he can have a better view of her stomach. Zup?

Vishwas Kulkarni (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 10, 2011)

When I SMS Payal Rohatgi with an interview request she directs me to her PR agent. It is a far cry from 2004 when she casually picked up the phone and conceded to spending a day in her Bandra pad for a fun piece:  “Payal Rohatgi gives you 10 tips on how to become a Page 3 celeb.”

But a lot has happened in the interim between Payal the Page 3 gal and Payal the struggling actress: for starters, from being a model, who worked with big timers such as Prahlad Kakar, Abhinay Deo and Priyadarshan, Payal became a reality television candidate with Bigg Boss (Season 2) in 2008. She even survived a physically abusive relationship with Rahul Mahajan, our homegrown mini-Charlie Sheen. “We used to be part of a group that used to hang out around 2002. But Rahul would hit me, then he’d cuddle me. He did that twice. After that I left him,” she says, when asked if the relationship has scarred her in any way.

It was a small-time glamour of sorts for the Ahmedabad-bred Payal, innocuous but practical; she moved out of her party-heady paying guest accommodation in Bandra and invested in a flat. She recently paid off the last installment of her housing loan, thus becoming a house-owing Bombayite in a neighbourhood where half of the population is More >

Madhureeta Mukherjee (BOMBAY TIMES; April 6, 2011) India’s #1 Bollywood channel and Times Now, India’s most watched English News channel, were launched recently in North America, adding many more South Asian fans and viewers to its kitty. With this launch in USA and Canada, the two channels are now available in sixteen countries around the world.

It was amidst great fanfare that Anil Kapoor and Vidya Balan addressed the launch press conference to the world press at the Mariott Marquis, Times Square, New York. With many local celebrities and dignitaries in attendance, the stars were put on the hot seat with a rocking LIVE ‘Encounter’ that entertained and charmed the elite audience. Among the big names in attendance were the Indian Counsel General, the NYC senator, City Comptroller of NYC and the Speaker of NJ assembly, amongst others.

When asked if women in Hollywood are hotter than our B-town beauties, Anil proudly said, “I think the women back home are hotter.” Talking about the paparazzi culture in Hollywood, adding his usual dash of humour, he said, “I can walk on the streets anywhere in the world, nobody recognises me. No paparazzi follows me. Only zoOm follows me around the world.” While AK spoke about the Hollywood-Bollywood wedlock, Vidya was questioned about her recent lip-lock (almost) with Rani Mukherji. Looking resplendent in her trademark Indian avatar, she said, “You know that was a mock kiss. I’m setting the record More >

Rana Daggubati, her Dum Maaro Dum co-star seems to be the new man in Bips’ life

Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 25, 2011)

While we’re still wondering if John Abraham and Bipasha are done with their ‘Dear John’ exchanges, the actress is not likely to run out of the broad-shouldered protectiveness that she is used to.

When she was asked if she enjoyed working with the South Indian John Abraham, her co-star in Dum Maaro Dum, Rana Daggubati jumped to her rescue with a ‘no personal questions’ diktat.

Rana told the media, rather sternly if we may add, not to trouble his on screen lover Bips with any personal questions.

It did not end there. Rana stuck to Bips throughout the conference and even afterwards.

Of course, being a friend meant he had to be by her side when she needed him the most. Which, by the way, seems to be most of the times, these days.

An eyewitness told us, “Before the conference began, it was decided that Bipasha will not be asked any questions pertaining to her personal life and John Abraham.

And if anybody still did, the director of the film, Rohan Sippy would take charge of the situation.

However, the moment someone asked her how she felt about working with the John Abraham (Read Rana) of the South Indian industry, Rana spoke to the journalist in Telugu asking him not to ask her questions on her personal life.”

“After the conference, in spite of the bodyguards around her, Rana himself started escorting her. Rana told her fans not to More >

Karan Johar to bring Hollywood superstar Hugh Jackman and Shah Rukh Khan together

Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 22, 2011)

Hollywood superstar Hugh Jackman and Shah Rukh Khan will meet at a film and media conference to be held in Mumbai, for an interaction on the two biggest film industries across the globe.

And if the two hunks on stage are not enough, none other than, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be introducing the Wolverine star on stage.

However, it all wouldn’t have been possible without Karan Johar. “It was Fox Star and Karan who were instrumental in bringing Hugh to Mumbai,” reveals a source. “Jackman will be coming down on 24th night and will be attending the closing ceremony of the conference on the 25th.

He will talk about cinema and the closing gap between Hollywood and Bollywood along with KJo and SRK.

Shah Rukh will be the only star interacting with Jackman. It is still unknown if SRK or Karan will host a party for him to meet the other B-town celebrities later,” adds the source.

When contacted, Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star India confirmed, saying, “We planned to bring a big Hollywood celebrity and Hugh is right up there.

He was our first choice and everything fell into place. We are delighted to have Hugh coming down.

He is going to attend the closing session of the conference. Karan will be in conversation with Hugh and Shah Rukh Khan.

A look at marketing strategies of small films

1

By Nikhil Ramsubramaniam, March 14, 2011 – 19:09 IST

The year 2010-11 could be well termed as a Renaissance year for the Hindi film industry. While big budget films such as Raavan, Kites, Action Replayy, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey and Guzaarish failed to set the Box Office on fire, smaller films such as Udaan, Peepli [LIVE], Tere Bin Laden, LSD, Phas Gaye Re Obama & Dhobi Ghat etc. with relatively lesser known stars and debutant directors (in most cases) won both critical acclaim and commercial success.

Most of these films were made at a limited budget and focussed more on their content rather than big stars and exotic locations. An interesting part is the fact that even the marketing strategy used to promote these films was quite different and subtle targeting a niche audience.

As a unique case study we take a look at 3 such off-beat films namely Dhobi Ghat, Love, Sex Aur Dhokha (LSD) and Udaan to try and understand how an innovative marketing strategy helped in the film finding its target audience.

Dhobi Ghat

Any Aamir Khan Productions’ film always generates tremendous hype and curiosity given the actor’s penchant for quality cinema. If needed, Aamir could have cashed in on this very hype by promoting wifey’s directorial debut Dhobi Ghat as a film for all. However, Aamir didn’t want his loyal audience to feel cheated and adopted a marketing strategy which not many would adopt.

Perhaps, the most poignant insight came from an industry insider who notes that the More >

The trio of Zayed Khan, Dia Mirza and Sahil Sangha who are the brains behind Born Free Entertainment announced their company’s first venture Love, Breakups, Zindagi at a colourful and vibrant Press Conference in Mumbai yesterday.

Love, Breakups, Zindagi is an entertaining rom-com that takes a look at today’s relationships. And we believe that we need to be honest to the audiences, delivering exactly what we promise.”

Zayed Khan who too is super-excited about his new outing said, “How often have you had a brilliant idea and thought there was no way you could translate that on to the screen? Pritish turns saviour for Katrina

Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 31, 2011)

Earlier, it was questions about her break-up with Salman Khan and now all that’s on Katrina’s mind is the recent IT raid.

Post the raid, Kat made her first public appearance last week at the book launch of Tonight This Savage Rite The Love Poems of Kamala Das and Pritish Nandy.

But very few know that before coming to the event Katrina was very apprehensive; she was scared that the media would ask her all sorts of questions about the IT raid.

Katrina at the book launch

Our source said, “Katrina was in two minds before coming to the event. However, Pritish Nandy assured her that he would take care of the situation.”

When contacted, Nandy said, “During the conference I said that we should limit the scope of questions to the event, poetry and literature and stick to that. The media has a habit of asking all kinds of questions and we had to maintain the dignity of the event.

A book launch is a book launch. The idea was to have a sense of fun with a lot of dignity. As far as Katrina being wary is concerned, obviously she would be wary, anybody would. It was not a nice experience for her.”
