Abhi-Sarah’s Game-a thrilling ride

The Abhishek-Sarah Jane Dias thriller has been shot in five exotic world cities

Sharin Wader Butani | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; August 3, 2010)

It’s been their ‘game’ plan for years now and it’s never gone wrong. This time, too, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani have made a slick film with an impressive star cast and it’s shot in five international cities. Excel Entertainment’s Game, directed by Abhinay Deo, is on the lines of the slick and thrilling Bourne Identity series. It has Abhishek Bachchan playing an entertainment mogul from Istanbul, Jimmy Shergill a Bollywood actor from Mumbai, Boman Irani a politician from Thailand, Shahana Goswami a budding crime journalist from London, Kangna Ranaut the shinning star of the International Vigilance Squad from London, and Sarah Jane Dias the main reason why all these characters cross paths.

Says Abhishek Bachchan, “The wicked, unpredictable mindset of my character in Game makes him a treasure to be with. It was exciting to be shooting across exotic locations around the globe with such an enthusiastic crew and some formidable actors.” And it wasn’t all work and no ‘game’ for the actor. Wife Aishwarya had dropped in on the sets of Greece and spent two weeks with him, cooking sumptuous meals for Abhi and the rest of the crew. But more than anybody else, it’s debutante Sarah who is most excited. “Game is my first Bollywood film and I could not have asked for a better beginning. Working with More >

Ranbir will win National Award for Raajneeti-Prakash Jha

By Subhash K. Jha, January 25, 2010 – 13:23 IST

Though he hasn’t received any National award this year, Prakash Jha just can’t stop preening over the fact that his Raajneeti features the maximum number of National award winners in its cast, Arjun Rampal being the latest.

Says Prakash, “When I heard Arjun had won the National award for Rock On, I was ecstatic. He is fantastic in my film. But it’s Ranbir I’m most hopeful about. I hope, in fact I’m pretty certain, he’ll win the National award for his performance.”

Ranbir plays an US-educated scion of a political dynasty who has to reluctantly return home to shoulder his family’s duties.

Says Prakash, “This film will take Ranbir to another level. In fact everyone is outstanding in the film. And why not? I’ve a line-up of National award winners in the cast, from Naseeruddin Shah and Nana Patekar to Manoj Bajpai and Ajay Devgan.”

Incidentally, Prakash can’t stop preening over the fact that his Raajneeti is the biggest multi-starrer since Sholay. “I think it’d be impossible to get so many stars under one roof for any other director.”

As for Katrina Kaif, Raajneeti in many ways is her film. “The girl has breathed fire and passion into her role. From the way she metamorphoses from a young vivacious girl to the way she walks to give her public speeches as a politician. Audiences won’t be able to believe the transformation of Katrina Kaif. I won’t be surprised if both Ranbir and Katrina win National awards,” says Prakash More >

Katrina unwell again

As her haemoglobin count continues to plummet, Katrina’s health is causing distress to all those who know her By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 14, 2009)

As her hemoglobin count continues to plummet, Katrina’s health is causing distress to all those who know her.

Everyone around Katrina, well-wishers, co-stars, friends and family are beginning to be extremely worried about Katrina’s deteriorating health. On Sunday she was again at a suburban hospital to take further tests as her haemoglobin count continued to fall, despite treatment from the best doctors in the city.

Though Katrina has been extremely selective recently about the appearances she makes, she is obviously still straining too much and it is affecting her adversely.

On Sunday Katrina woke up unable to get out of bed.  The  worst  blow to her  frail energy level  was  the hectic  wedding of  Salman Khan’s close family-friend Krishan Narayan’s  daughter which Katrina attended for two consecutive nights on Friday and Saturday for the sangeet  and wedding.

Forgetting her delicate health, Katrina had simply let herself go, dancing and having a good time.

A friend explained, “It was a commitment she couldn’t wriggle out of. The bride’s father, an associate of politician Praful Patel, is a very close friend of Salman Khan. And Katrina who has always looked at Salman’s friends as her own, had to be there.”

The result of two consecutive nights of merry-making was a relapse. On Sunday Katrina had to More >

Farhan Akhtar declines an offer to star with Abhishek Bachchan in Rohan Sippy’s next By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 01, 2009)

Rohan Sippy’s film requires three leading men. While two of them, Abhishek Bachchan and Pratik Babbar, have been finalised there is another crucial third character, whose role is parallel to that of Abhishek.

Apparently, Abhishek and Farhan Akhtar were the first choices for the two parts and since director Rohan Sippy, Abhishek and Farhan are childhood friends, no one saw any problems in the casting.

Farhan Akhtar Abhishek Bachchan

Rohan’s film is being produced by his father Ramesh Sippy, a close family friend of Farhan’s father Javed Akhtar.

Although both Rohan Sippy and Farhan Akhtar remained unavailable for comment, a source close to the project said, “Farhan was indeed the first choice to play Abhishek’s co-star. The on-screen partnering was patterned on those Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor films that Farhan’s father once wrote. Farhan declined the offer, much to the dismay of Rohan’s team, which hadn’t thought of anyone else.”

Since the role is as important as Abhishek’s, Rohan and Abhishek have now zeroed in on John Abraham for the same role.

“The problem with Abhishek-John is   that audiences will immediately think of Dhoom where again, Abhishek played an undercover cop, as he does in Rohan’s film. Rohan’s film is not a light bantering caper like Dhoom. It’s dark and does an expose on the drug More >

Movie Review: AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI by FENIL SETA

I am out of the theatre and still thinking, “Is this the same Rajkumar Santoshi who gave some hard-hitting and intense films for a long time?”. Yup, he directed Andaz Apna Apna but that was like some 15-16 years ago. Post-AAA, he came up with close to dozen intense and almost realistic films. A certain image of Santoshi was carved out thanks to his kind of films. But with Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, he breaks that image and proves that he STILL can come up with solid youthful entertainers! Sweet, witty, little absurd… Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani succeeds completely in making you laugh!

The story of the movie: Prem (Ranbir Kapoor) lives in a town called Mount Valley and runs ‘Happy Club’ in the coffin shop of one of his friends’ father! He is carefree, happy and wants to make others happy. A case of mistaken identity leads him to meeting Jenny (Katrina Kaif). He soon falls in love with her but doesn’t profess even though both he and Jenny become thick pals. The reason-both are as different as chalk and cheese. To begin with, Prem is the son of a staunch Hindu while Jenny is Catholic. Jenny wants her dream man to be literate and who works hard for his family. But Prem is 9th standard pass and doesn’t work at all. And lastly, Prem is a vegetarian and Jenny is not (or is she?)! And does Jenny feel the same for Prem? Or does she love someone else?

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is a different entertainer, esp in terms of storytelling and execution. Every More >

Ram Gopal Varma threatened by locals of politician and alleged criminal Paritala Ravindra’s constituency at Ananthapur, where he’s doing research on Paritala’s life By Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 16, 2009)

Ram Gopal Varma

Often one to court trouble, Ram Gopal Varma found himself dealing with much more than what he had bargained for, on Friday and Saturday when he landed in Ananthapur, Hyderabad. He is there to research the life of the controversial politician and alleged criminal Paritala Ravindra who is wanted in over 50 murder cases, as his next film Rakta Charitra is based of Paritala’s life. Little did Ramu suspect to be caught in the middle of violent protests in Paritala’s constituency, where his wife, Sunitha now lives.

Our source reveals, “The minute Sunitha saw Ramu, she made it very clear to him that she won’t allow anyone to make a film on her husband. She claimed that she won’t let anyone portray her husband as a criminal, whereas in reality he’s revered and worshipped in his constituency. But Ramu being Ramu just nodded, pretending to get her point, while actually, he couldn’t really follow her fluent Telugu. He left her with a smile and then continued meeting Paritala’s friends and other family members. And soon, word spread that Ramu would be going ahead with the film despite being asked not to.
