My Name Is Khan is Bollywood’s first global blockbuster

0

TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; December 27, 2010)

As 2010 draws to an end, Karan Johar — whose February release My Name Is Khan has been Bollywood’s first global blockbuster, is sitting op top of the world and says proudly, “I am overwhelmed, the film was made by Dharma Productions with a global perspective to connect with audiences in India and overseas in a way that no film has ever done before. And it has exceeded expectations and broken box office records in most markets.”

Of this, there is no doubt; not after MNIK released in 70 countries over nine months and across 2,600 screens, to also become the first Indian film to make inroads in China and Italy. In China, its theatrical release in over 350 screens in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Dalian since its launch on November 30, is a landmark achievement. And Shah Rukh Khan as Rizwan Khan – a man affected by Asperger’s syndrome, made his way into the hearts of the Chinese.

Of Fox Star Studios’ phased distribution strategy, its CEO Vijay Singh explains, “This is in unique contrast to existing Bollywood practices where the theatrical life of a film is limited to four weeks. MNIK has opened many new territories for Bollywood. This success would not have been possible without the amazing connect of global audiences with SRK and Karan, coupled with our worldwide distribution strength.”

It is true, MNIK is the first Bollywood film to have a theatrical release in Egypt, More >

Deepika goes the Munni Badnaam way

In Rohan Sippy’s next, the actress will gyrate to a remixed version of Dum Maro Dum

Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 30, 2010)

Item numbers are back, thanks to Malaika Arora’s Khan’s glamorous Munni badnaam stint in Dabangg.

And while Katrina Kaif is already scorching up screens with her Sheila Ki Jawani number in Tees Maar Khan, her archrival Deepika Padukone is aggressively sexing up her own act. She will feature in the title track of Rohan Sippy’s, Dum Maro Dum.

Deepika Padukone

The title track will be played towards the climax of the film, which is very crucial to the script.

The song, Dum Maro Dum, was a smash hit in Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971), featuring Dev Anand and Zeenat Aman.

The song is being re-worked by Pritam and will have Jaideep Sahni’s lyrics.

A source says, “This climax song will be shot at Mehboob studio, where a jungle set will be put up and will be choreographed by Ceaser.

A lot of laser will be used. It will have a hip hop-cum-rave party set-up, but Deepika won’t be seen as a hippie.”

It’s not a surprise though. In the past Rohan Sippy has remixed ‘Sabse Bada Rupaiya’ for his film Bluffmaster.

So we can expect another cool number coming on its way.

The official spokesperson of the film and actress said denied the news.

Careful with the jhatkas, Deepika!

Sunil Shetty has a Twitter duplicate

The actor discovered the imposter only three days ago

Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 30, 2010)

A few days ago, Sunil Shetty was in for a rude shock when he realized that somebody is interacting with B-town under his name on a social networking site.

The impostor has been relentless in his messages to a large number of people in the industry, some of who include top actors like Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. Seeing Big B’s picture on a tractor in a section of the press, the impostor had the cheek to ask Big B, “Sir, how was your experience in the farms?”

Sunil Shetty

The existence of this impostor came to Shetty’s notice when he interacted with one of Shetty’s friends in Los Angeles.

When contacted, Shetty said, “I wasn’t aware about this stupid person till three days ago, when a friend of mine called from the US. He mentioned about me tweeting and posting messages. I am not on any social networking site.

I was shocked. I realized that someone is up to some mischief and misusing my name. This is completely unethical and immoral.”

Added Shetty, “I am immensely worried that this guy, whoever he is, may land people in tight spots by sending out some wrong and dangerous information under my name. If you recall, Kajol faced problems with Shiv Sena on tweeting some stuff, which she hadn’t.”

Geeks can be vicious, Sunil.

Amisha opts out of Leander Paes’ debut

Amisha has stormed out of Rajdhani Express. She has reservations about steamy scenes with the tennis pro

Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 30, 2010)

Amisha Patel, who was in the news recently for signing Rajdhani Express opposite Leander Paes, has developed cold feet and dumped the film; she has no interest in acting in it anymore supposedly because it has many bold scenes in it.

Apparently, the actress was not at all comfortable with doing some very crucial scenes in the film, as they were explicitly bold.

Most importantly, she was required to play a flirtatious woman, who would do just about anything for money. So, the role was too brash for Amisha’s comfort.

Added to this, were a few steamy lovemaking scenes with Tennis star Leander Paes, which Amisha was apparently not at ease with. Hence, the actress has now walked out of the project.

Our source said, “The film has many love making scenes including a bold one with Paes. Amisha has to show a lot of skin and her character is also unapologetic for all that she does in the film. Amisha also had lines with bold language.

Her look in the film was designed in a manner to make her look forthright and vulgar, which Amisha was not happy about. So, when the director Ashok Kohli narrated the script to her she knew she was not cut out for it.

Amisha spoke to the director, who understood her point of view and agreed to let her go.”

When contacted, Amisha Patel said, “No, I am not doing the film More >

Neil not keen to promote Tera Kya Hoga Johny?

Miffed about the delayed release of Mishra’s Tera Kya Hoga Johny, Neil Nitin Mukesh wants to have very little to do with its promotions

Subhash K Jha and Mauli Singh (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 30, 2010)

At a juncture in his career when Neil Nitin Mukesh can least afford it, given his recent chain of flops, the producers of Sudhir Mishra’s canned film Tera Kya Hoga Johny have decided to release it on December 17.  Neil is not happy about it.

Tera Kya Hoga Johnny was shot three years ago. Neil has a pivotal role in the film, which also stars Kay Kay Menon, Shahana Goswami, Soha Ali Khan among others.

Sudhir Mishra on the other hand, is quite gung-ho about the film and says, “After I made Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin, Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya came along to ride on its theme and treatment. Satya was a cult success. I don’t see why Slumdog Millionaire would stop my Tera Kya Hoga Johnny from making an impact.”

Sudhir Mishra Neil Nitin Mukesh

The film was also leaked out on YouTube a year ago and this jeopardised its chances at the box office then. But Sudhir says, “That version was a very rough cut. I’ve now done the final editing.” If only his lead, Neil would agree.

The actor insists he doesn’t have time to promote Sudhir’s film as he’s busy with the post-production of Vishal Bhardwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf and with shooting for Abbas-Mustan’s Players.

When asked to elaborate on why he is so miffed with the delayed release, Neil says, “It’s not More >

Ayan Mukherjee in a fix

After the Koffee with Karan controversy, Rishi Kapoor puts Ayan Mukherjee in a tight spot. Make a film with your best buddy Ranbir, he says. But keep KJo out of the picture

Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 30, 2010)

Ayan Mukerjee, of Wake Up Sid fame, is in a bit of a fix. He has been asked to choose between his best friend Ranbir Kapoor and mentor Karan Johar.

Last week the Wake Up Sid director Ayan Mukerjee got a jolting wake-up call from his best-friend Ranbir Kapoor’s father Rishi Kapoor.

Ayan was all set to direct Ranbir for the second time for Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. The two buddies, Ayan and Ranbir, were happily working on a second script that would take them beyond Wake Up Sid.

The script had been locked in and the second Ranbir-Ayan collaboration for Karan Johar was to go on the floors in early 2011.

Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor

Then the fall-out between Rishi Kapoor and Karan Johar over remarks on Ranbir on Karan Koffee With Karan happened.

Now Ranbir and Ayan are caught in the crossfire. Rishi Kapoor called Ayan over and gave him an ultimatum. Ayan would have to choose between working with either Ranbir Kapoor or Karan Johar. A frightening choice for the painfully young director since he is equally close to both Ranbir and Karan and can’t think of making a film in the absence of either.

Rishi, still seething about Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s comments on Ranbir on Koffee With Karan, confirms that More >

Is Sahil Shroff Priyanka’s new muse?

On the sets of Don2, Sahil Shroff and Priyanka Chopra are thick as thieves. We wonder if something’s brewing…

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 30, 2010)

There is a good chance that this guy might be the new man in her life. Piggy Chops, they say, has found a special friend in Sahil Shroff, a model from Mumbai who is also playing a supporting role in Farhan Akhtar’s Don2.

Aside from appearing in several top commercials in the recent past, Sahil has also contested in the reality TV show, The Amazing Race Asia.

Rumour has it that the chemistry between the two was palpable from day one itself on the sets of Don 2. They hit it off instantly, and since then, have shared a great rapport with one another.

Says a source, “Priyanka and Sahil get along like a house on fire. They are very good friends. Don 2 is Sahil’s first film and the actor was struggling for a bit to come to grips with the demands of this mega-project.

Sahil Shroff

We hear Priyanka gave him tips and helped him get a few things right.” We wonder what those things are.

Defending Priyanka, a friend of hers told Mumbai Mirror, “That’s the way Priyanka is with everybody. She is a very friendly and chilled-out girl who has no airs about her.”

Despite repeated attempts, neither Priyanka nor Sahil reverted to our calls or text messages, but a friend of Sahil’s called to say, “Sahil is not available for comment. He is out of the country.”

I’m dying for a lead role-Shahana Goswami

Shahana Goswami is preparing for a makeover so that filmmakers can see her in a new light

Saadia S Dhailey (BOMBAY TIMES; November 30, 2010)

Whether the films got good reviews or bad, there were no mixed reviews about Shahana Goswami’s acting prowess. Yet she continues to be seen in roles that support a film, rather than shoulder it, including her latest with Imran and Deepika. Shahana agrees, and admits rather honestly, “Though it’s nice to get talked about playing small parts, I am dying to do a leading lady’s role.” Not that offers haven’t come by, she shares, but they didn’t match her list of must haves. “I’d want a good banner, along with a good script and a good director,” she says, as she believes these are essential for visibility.

Meanwhile she is busy with what she calls a “personal project,” and no, that isn’t wedding preparations with her beau Milind Soman. “You can call it a make-over. I am working on presenting myself in the best way I can, and look like an actress should.”

In spite of hating the gym, she has finally signed up to shed the extra kilos. “Though Milind and I don’t work out together – he prefers to run, and I just can’t match up with his pace –he’s helping me set the goals,” she says, and is sure that results will begin to show in a month. For the rest, her friends from the industry are helping her out, including Deepika. “Deepika is in a different league, and she shares the experiences that it More >

Akshaye’s character in TMK does a spoof on SRK?

0

Prithwish Ganguly | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; November 30, 2010)

BT would not like to hazard a guess on the relationship status between Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan, but the buzz in Bollywood is that the choreographer-director has mercilessly spoofed the Bollywood Badshah in her forthcoming film Tees Maar Khan. It is said that Akshaye Khanna’s role in the film is completely modelled on SRK. And the references to the superstar are as bold and direct as they can be. Trade pundits don’t find this unusual. They say the film was written by Farah’s husband Shirish Kunder, who doesn’t see eye-to-eye with SRK, and naturally — the script-writer would have lampooned the Bollywood Badshah given the opportunity. So, Shirish’s script has Akshaye suffering from a terrible back ache for which he has to constantly go to London for treatment. And, there’s Akshaye in his opening shot talking about showing off his six-pack and going topless for a scene, which will remind viewers of SRK’s Dard-e-Disco number in Om Shanti Om. Also, there’s an international filmmaker coincidentally named Danny who comes to meet Akshaye and is kept waiting for six hours before Akshaye declines his film offer. Anil Kapoor, who plays a cameo in TMK, then replaces Akshaye in this international film that wins an Oscar and Akshaye is shown regretting his decision. Which is really what happened when Danny Boyle approached SRK for Slumdog Millionaire with the role that Anil More >
