Shoojit Sircar tells us why there will not be any conventional ‘herogiri’ in Madras Cafe

Soumyadipta Banerjee (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 4, 2013)

Shoojit Sircar has just finished shooting for Madras Café. When we called him on Thursday, the director, whose previous film Vicky Donor has won three National Awards this year, including one for the best popular film, was getting all suited up to attend the ceremony. After much persuasion he agreed for a short interview.

“We wrapped up shooting for Madras Café two weeks ago. But as you know, the real filmmaking process starts after this, when we sit down to edit it. Considering that we have already fixed the release date as August 30, I am racing against time,” he says.

Although Vicky Donor missed a shot at the Oscars because the producers failed to send it for nominations, Shoojit is planning to take his next film to international film festivals. “Frankly, I don’t know what kind of films work well at festivals. But I am surely going to take this film around (in festivals).” He says hoping Madras Cafe will garner favourable response from the jury members. Nargis Fakhri, who was picked over Sheetal Mallar, his original choice for the female lead, in Madras Café is hardly known for her acting skills. When asked about this curious choice, Shoojit explains: “Nargis may have faced much criticism, I always knew she would be able to deliver. You will see a completely new Nargis in this film. Not many know, but I was the first person to More >

A source says, “The item number will feature Nargis along with Shahid.” Nargis’s spokesperson remained unavailable for comment.

John Abraham asks for 15 cr for Welcome 2?

Kunal M Shah (MID-DAY; April 22, 2013)

When Welcome released in 2007, the Anees Bazmee directorial did brisk business at the box office. And with the film’s sequel being made, the makers have apparently paid a whopping fee of Rs 15 crore to lead actor John Abraham.

After Welcome, its producer Firoz Nadiadwala’s presence in B-Town has been quite limited. While the third installment of Hera Pheri failed to take off, sources say that the sequel of Welcome is all ready to roll towards the end of this year. While from the original cast Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar have been retained, the makers are looking for a replacement for late actor Firoz Khan. Anees will be helming the project.

Our source says, “Nadiadwala wanted to make the sequel of his film since quite some time now. However when talks with Akshay Kumar fizzled out, Firoz was looking for another option. Anees and Firoz decided to cast John and they have apparently paid him Rs 15 crore for the film. Given that John’s upcoming film with Sanjay Gupta is being much talked about, it was but obvious that the actor would be commanding a price like this.” While Nadiadwala refuses to divulge further details, all he says is, “No, nothing like that! Also, Welcome Back will be a complete family entertainer.” While the original film starred Katrina Kaif, the sequel’s leading lady is yet to be finalised.

John Abraham talks to Mirror about playing Manya Surve, the women in his life, and why he doesn’t really believe in the Rs 100 crore club

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 8, 2013)

John Abraham is both excited and anxious. His role in Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout at Wadala (SAW) is very different from anything he has done so far. We find the actor a tad under the weather as we engage him in a free-wheeling conversation at his office. Excerpts…

You are perceived as a sex symbol. Were you apprehensive about playing Manya Surve? I was apprehensive. As we went deeper into Manya’s character, I realised the role would get tougher by the scene. I had two options: back out and keep my image intact or take the next step and do something radically different.

So you chose the latter. I knew if I cracked it, it would carry me into a different space. It would get filmmakers to sit up and see something they never expected of John Abraham.

SAW is your acid test… I don’t need any more acid tests in life. I have been burnt enough. Let’s put it this way: SAW will reintroduce John Abraham. My fans will revalidate their faith in me and, hopefully, others will become my fans too.

But why haven’t you delivered a Rs 100 crore film yet? What about Housefull 2 and Race 2? It’s just that I didn’t make a noise about these films. Besides, Rs 100 crore films are not necessarily good films.

Housefull 2 and Race 2 had an ensemble cast. Does SAW have an ensemble cast or is it a John Abraham film? It’s More >

I want someone normal-Nargis Fakhri

Never mind the rumours of her dating Uday Chopra, the actress reveals that she wouldn’t go out with anyone from the industry

Aakanksha Naval-Shetye (DNA; April 4, 2013)

Nargis Fakhri who debuted in a demure avatar in Rockstar now reveals her sizzling side. The actress recently did a bikini shoot for a men’s magazine. And the first one to give her a thumbs up was rumoured beau Uday Chopra. He was was quick to tweet, “How hot is this woman @NargisFakhri” and he posted alongside a pic of her in a bikini.

While the industry has been abuzz about their ‘friendship’, the duo cheekily resort to twiflirting and having fun at the expense of the speculators. However, the actress reveals in an accompanying interview that she would never date anyone from the industry, “No! I want someone normal. Someone who has a normal fucking job, who goes to sleep at nine o’clock at night and likes to go trekking and likes to cook.”

Talking about dating, Nargis adds that the problem is time. “I demand a lot from my partner because I do so much, and expect it back… In this business I don’t know how you can be in a relationship, you don’t even have the time to get to know someone. That could actually be a reason to leave the business.”

Nargis Fakhri gets a bikini body, thanks to zumba DVDs

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; April 2, 2013)

To flaunt a bikini body, most resort to dieting and strenuous workouts. It requires hard work and dedication to flaunt the curves. Nargis Fakhri, however, picked up some zumba DVDs to get in shape! The Rockstar actress, who is shooting for Shoojit Sircar’s Madras Cafe with John Abraham, had to get a bikini body for a mag’s photo shoot.

As she was to grace the cover for a summer special, they wanted her in a two- piece to further soar the temperatures.

Says a source close to the actress, “Before she started shooting for the film, Nargis had indulged in adventure sports and mixed martial arts as preparation for her role as it involves action sequences. The makers wanted an athletic look. But when the magazine offer came her way, Nargis had to don a curvier body.” Adds the source, “She had a mere two weeks to get a bikini body for the photo shoot. As Nargis was busy travelling for her film shoot, she couldn’t hit the gym every day. Nor could her trainer be around. So she picked up a few zumba DVDs. Every night after the shoot would wrap up, she would hit the play button and work- out.” Zumba is a dance fitness programme that originated in Colombia. Spending some sleepless nights watching the DVDs seems to have paid off for Nargis.

Actress turns down Punit Malhotra’s offer to do a special song sequence due to other prior commitment

Mehul S Thakkar (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 27, 2013)

Looks like Nargis Fakhri will have to wait a while longer for her chance to do a special song like her peers. Apparently, Punit Malhotra, who made his directorial debut with Dharma Productions’ I Hate Luv Storys, had approached the actress last month to perform a special number in his next Gori Tere Pyar Mein starring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor. While Nargis was pretty kicked with the idea, she was forced to come back with ‘no’ as answer because of a clash of dates with Madras Café. A source told Mirror, “Puneet met up with Nargis last month. He had this lavish set-up in mind with loads of dancers giving Nargis company and discussed the concept with her. She was very excited, especially since the offer had come from one of Dharma Productions’ directors.”

Puneet had planned to shoot the song in a few months and shared the tentative dates with Nargis. “However, she found the dates clashing as she will be busy with Madras Café during that time. So she refused. Puneet told Karan Johar about this and Karan, being the supportive kind, told him to look for other options,” the source said.

While we tried getting in touch with Punit and Nargis, neither was available for comment.

Not only older heroines, just-arrived heroines are jobless too

Where does our male superstars’ obsession with young co-stars leave our just-arrived debutants?

Kunal M Shah (MID-DAY; February 15, 2013)

So Salman’s found a new face opposite him for Sohail Khan’s film while SRK is hunting for one for Farah Khan’s next. Rumours are also abuzz that Nawab Saif Ali Khan is also looking for a fresh face for his home production. So what happened to Diana Penty who debuted in his home production, Cocktail, just last year? Last season’s flavour? Maybe yes.

2012 saw the grand debut of as many as a dozen newbies. But only a handful of them have any films on their plates this year. So why are our 40- something A-list male superstars so fussy about their co-stars’ age? Is it because of their insecurity about looking older or is it the fear of being overshadowed? After all, their A-list female counterparts too have their platter laden with too many meaty projects. Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi Sinha, Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan, Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma have no dates to spare for the entire year.

Tricks of the trade

Trade experts attribute this to a couple of factors. First of all, the lack of top actresses in Bollywood right now.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, “Kareena is already married and Priyanka is very busy. Sonakshi has already done two to three films with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Stars prefer to go for new girls who bring freshness to the project.” This is the reason that every year sees the influx of three to four More >

Nargis Fakhri undergoes rigorous physical training for Madras Cafe

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; February 6, 2013)

Nargis Fakhri is all out to make people see a new avatar of her — a far cry from her Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Rockstar days. She has been sporting a leaner, athletic frame for Shoojit Sircar’s Madras Cafe.

As the film starring John Abraham involves a lot of action sequence, she has also extensively prepared for the role.

The actress took upon the onus of training herself for the role prior to the shoot schedule. Says a source, “ The film requires her not only to do action sequences, but extreme adventure sport as well.

She spent some time in Australia, the hub for adventure sports, to put in a stint with the experts in Sydney.” Adds the source, “ Apart from a rigorous physical training schedule, she also watched multiple documentaries by network journalists on war coverage as she plays a journo in the film.” With John as he co- star, Nargis is leaving no stone unturned to get into the action mode as well as him.

Nargis wanders in restricted forest; encounters poisonous snake

Aakansha Naval-Shetye (DNA; February 4, 2013)

While shooting for a film, Nargis Fakhri had a wild encounter that left her quite rattled. The actress was shooting for John Abraham’s Madras Cafe in the deep forests near Antripally falls. These jungles, near Kochi, are known for their wildlife, and the forests too are said to be infested with snakes. In fact, the cast and crew had been forewarned about the presence of the snakes in the area.

According to sources, the incident occurred post pack-up. “Nargis was in Kochi on a long schedule for Madras Cafe. Since Shoojit Sarcar (director) was keen to shoot at real locations, the cast was to shoot in real jungles. The cast and crew were stayed in the safer sections outside the forest,” reveals a production member. Nargis, who loves to explore new places, would often go hiking around after the shooting. However, the source says that one evening, Nargis happened to wander off into the restricted area of the forest, which is considered dangerous even for locals.

“Though she would often be accompanied by a guide on her treks, one evening she took off on her own and found herself facing a poisonous snake. Luckily, before anything wrong could happen, a few locals spotted her and managed to chase away the snake,” adds the insider. A few of them quickly alerted the forest officials who informed Nargis that she was in unauthorised territory. “But then they realised that Nargis was unaware of that and a forest guard safely escorted her More >
