Neeraj Pandey, Manish Gupta get into ugly fight
Sep 1st
August 30 turned out to be unlucky for A Wednesday director Neeraj Pandey, when creative differences with The Stoneman Murders director Manish Gupta, got out of hand
After A Wednesday, Neeraj Pandey joined hands with Sheetal Bhatia and turned producer, but despite the film’s success, Neeraj’s journey so far has not been all that smooth. On Monday evening, Neeraj had a big altercation with The Stoneman Murders director Manish Gupta, who he had signed to direct one of his early ventures.
The argument that later snowballed into an ugly fight, took place in Neeraj’s office in Andheri. Says a source, “Neeraj and Manish started off on the same page but soon developed creative differences, which kept increasing with every passing day. The arguments reached an ugly climax in Neeraj’s office on Monday.”

The story goes that Neeraj signed Manish for a fast-paced thriller about three months ago. Reminiscing what happened after that, Manish says, “Neeraj started interfering in the script. Initially, I didn’t mind it. But his interference increased so much that I lost my identity.
I became so confused that I could hardly concentrate on it any longer. On Monday, when I told him that I would like to do it my way, he said ‘Tum bade badtameez insaan ho. And you dare not address me as ‘tum’. Call me ‘aap’. I was shocked and have still not recovered.”
Soon after, Manish apparently stormed out of Neeraj’s office, saying, “I am not doing Neeraj’s film anymore. Mujhse nahin hoga.”
Meanwhile, what is even more shocking is that Manish is now refusing to return the signing amount of Rs five lakh, which Neeraj had given him, when he appointed him on the project and the man has no qualms admitting it. “I am not returning Rs 5 lakh,” says Manish, determined to not go back on his resolve.
While Neeraj remained unavailable for comment, his partner Sheetal Bhatia said, “Yes. Neeraj and I are going to produce films. As for Manish Gupta, we were in talks with him and were trying to put a project together. But we couldn’t finalise anything. I don’t want to say anything more on this.”
WAF makers want 2-week commitment from single screens?
Aug 28th
Producers of We are Family were allegedly insisting on a minimum two-week slot from single screens in the city. But some single screen owners were unwilling to compromise on Dabangg
With two major films scheduled for release from two separate camps — We Are Family (September 2) and Dabangg (Sept 10) — a scramble for single theatres is ensuing between Dharma Productions and Arbaaz Khan Productions. Dharma, which is releasing We are Family a week before Dabangg wants a two-week commitment from some single theatres. However, not all are complying with the demand.
A source from the industry told Mumbai Mirror, “The makers of We Are Family want a commitment of two weeks from single screens. But the single screens are not game. They surely can’t ignore Dabangg. They have told Karan and UTV that this won’t be possible.”

Manoj Desai, owner of Maratha Mandir, said, ‘Stepmom ki maa hai ya baap hai woh to baad mein pata chalega. I have a Marathi film for two shows in the same week as We Are Family. I can’t take up We Are Family for just two shows. If Karan is confident about We Are Family, he should not be asking for two weeks’ commitment. He should let the film speak for itself, and let the single screen owners then decide.”
Santosh Bhatia, exhibitor, Premiere (Dadar) and Premier Gold (Dongri), said, “I am not ready to release We Are Family for two weeks. Dabangg is very hot. I don’t want to lose out on that. If Dabangg was not coming a week after We Are Family, I would have thought of signing We Are Family for two weeks.”
Contesting this conjecture, Gaurav Verma, VP, India Distribution of UTV Motion Pictures, said, “This is completely untrue. We have already locked all our cinemas, theatre listings are out, and advance bookings open on Monday.” Yet contradicting this claim, Sameer Joshi, owner of Chandan Cinema (Juhu), said, “We have locked Dabangg, but are still negotiating on We are Family.”
Karan Johar did not respond to our calls.

Salman fined for praking vanity van on the street
Aug 17th
Salman fined for parking customised van outside his home as luxury trailers become a bone of contention between actors and their neighbours
In a city known for its Bollywood glitz, spotting giant vanity vans - with their tinted glasses, customised exteriors and luxurious interiors - parked outside an actor’s famous home, often comes a close second to star-gazing.
However, with Mumbai increasingly running out of patience and space, these multi-million giants are proving to be a bone of contention between irritated citizens and Bollywood stars living in their neighbourhood.
On Monday, actor Salman Khan was fined Rs 1,200 by the traffic police for parking his vanity van outside his home at Galaxy Apartment, Bandra.
This followed a written a complaint to the local police and RTO by residents complaining about the vans of stars Salman and Shah Rukh Khan which, they said, were inconveniencing them.
Not too long ago, a teenager had skid off his bike and rammed into Salman’s van. Though no official complaint was lodged with the police, he suffered minor injuries.
A few days later, a young girl, who lost control at high speed, had crashed into the van. She was helped by Salman’s father Salim Khan, who arranged for her to be dropped home safely.

Residents allege that not just Salman, but Shah Rukh too parks his customised vehicle on the road adjacent to his house, Mannat.
“These vans are a nuisance. They shouldn’t be parked on public roads. They cause a lot of traffic problems but the BMC is equally responsible for this problem,” said Rahul Bage, a management professional.
Another resident, Manuel Fernandis agreed: “I agree there is no space inside the premises for these vans, but an alternative spot must be found. These vans not only disturb the serenity of the neighbourhood, they also cause traffic jams.”
Vijayalaxmi Vettegauda, Senior Inspector of Bandra traffic police, said that Salman had agreed to find an alternative parking spot for his van. “We went to Salman’s residence, where he was busy dubbing with Sonakshi Sinha. He wanted to know whether we are taking similar action against all illegally parked vehicles in the vicinity.
We explained that any private vehicle could be parked on the road unless it is a no-parking zone. But if the vehicle was obstructing traffic or someone if complained to the police, the owner had to be fined,” she said.
The cops booked Salman under the Mumbai Police Act and fined him Rs 1,200. “As far as Shah Rukh’s van is considered,” Vettegutta said, the van is parked in a spot owned by him. So there is no question of a fine.

While the fine amount may have been negligible, there is, a very real problem. Though there are no issues while these vans are parked on set, not many of these mobile trailer owners have the space to accommodate them when they’re not shooting.
Dilip Chhabria, who has customised several vanity vans for Bollywood stars, says the problem is largely with vans hired by production crews than those owned by actors such as Salman and Shah Rukh.
“I don’t think the stars inconvenience traffic or block roads with their vans. They look after them very well and usually park them correctly. Most vans that cause problems belong to members of the crew who deal with various production tasks.”
But A R Nair, an activist and complainant, argued: “These are some of our biggest stars but it is necessary to do something about these vans. Accidents take place now and then But are we waiting for something serious to happen before taking action?”
A source close to Salman said,”In Mumbai, parking is a big problem. Where does one park his car if not outside his home?” His secretary Vikas Kapoor, however, declined to comment. Neither Shah Rukh Khan nor his spokesperson were available.
Meanwhile, RTI inquiries have revealed that several vanity vans used for commercial purposes not registered as Transport Vehicles, and are therefore illegal.
In some cases, the actors are not even aware that the vans assigned to them and hired by their production units are not recognised as per the Motor Vehicle Act and they cannot claim insurance if anything goes wrong.
Replying to an RTI query, the transport department admitted no vehicle can be rented unless it is registered as a Transport Vehicle.
Transport Commissioner D G Jadhav said, “Most of the vanity vans are meant for personal use and are registered as private vehicles.” The vanity van operators association, however, openly distributes a tariff card for them.

Peepli [Live] has great start; Help is dull

Help had a poor start of 25-30%. The film may do average business where horror films have a market but little chance of overall success.
Peepli [Live] managed a good start at places and average at others due to the Aamir Khan name. The first day was around 50-60%. The reports are good and the film should score well at multiplexes of big cities in the long run.
Aisha had a decent first week of 14.50 crore nett. The film dropped on Monday but a decent first weekend will enable the film to have fair lifetime business of 20 crore nett total and a 9 crore distributor share. The business was best in the Delhi NCR belt.
Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai was steady in week two with around 13 crore nett business. The two week total is now 47 crore nett and the film should hit the 55 crore nett mark. HIT
Salman gifts bicycle to 2 street children
Aug 11th
On spotting two street children eyeing his bicycle, Salman ordered his assistant to buy them one

On Monday morning, Salman Khan was getting ready to go out for a ride on on his bicycle. It was 6am. While he was getting ready, he saw from his window that two poor street children were eyeing his bicycle, wishing it was theirs.
On seeing Salman come out, the kids got up to run away when Salman called out to them. Initially, the two children were scared. His muscles can intimidate at times. But later, they mustered up the courage to go and speak to him.
Salman asked, ‘Kya dekh rahe the?” The kids replied, ‘Aapka cycle. Mast hai.” Salman asked them if they would like to own one. The two kids, who were brothers, immediately said, “Yes”.
Before speeding off on his bicycle, Salman called his assistant and ordered, “Inko cycle lekar dena, aur aaj hi.”
The kids are proud owners of a brand new bicycle. Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, the younger one, Chhotu, who is a seven-year-old, said, “Yes, Salman bhai ne mujhe aur mere bade bhai ko naya cycle lekar diya. Hum bahut khush hain.”
Late night horror in lift for filmgoers
Aug 9th
Seventeen trapped inside elevator for over five hours after late show in Kalyan mall
Seventeen people stepped out of a night-show of Once Upon a Time In Mumbaai only to walk into a real life psycho-thriller that lasted five and a half hours. The group, with two children in its midst, spent the night trapped in a packed lift at the Metro Junction Mall, Kalyan (East).
At first, when the lift stalled between the first and the ground floor around 12.30 am, the people trapped inside thought it was a minor malfunction and they would be home soon. They banged on the door and shouted for help.
Mall officials rushed to the site and opened the door but the space between the elevator and the first floor was so small that the victims could not be brought out.
After this, as minutes turned to hours, panic mounted. Those trapped could barely move. Not only were there far too many of them but they also feared the lift would crash if they didn’t stay still.
With only a small opening for fresh air, they were petrified of suffocation. Dinesh and Reena Chadda were in this lift with their two-year-old son Aarush. “My son was asleep for the first three hours. But when he awoke he started bawling. That was when things took a turn for the worse for us,” said Dinesh, a real estate consultant and a resident of Kalyan. His wife added, “The lift was packed. I was filled with feelings of dread that we would not make it.
I kept thinking about the firemen who suffocated to death in a Thane lift.” Nand Chhapru, a businessman, who was also with his wife and child, said, “There was no place to move.”
It was horror in slow motion for the victims. Chadda said, “The people outside did not seem to know what to do. Luckily, the lift lights did not malfunction. They had also put up a fan at the opening and were passing us water. Most of our cellphones had no network.”

The rescue
For the first two hours, the mall management and lift technicians tried to rectify the snag. However, they realised that the problem was complicated and technicians from Kone, the lift manufacturing company, were called in. “The safety mechanism of the lift was locked. We could neither unlock nor break it,” said Mac Daniels, vice president of West Pioneer, which owns the 7.5 lakh square feet mall.
When authorities brought in gas-cutters to unlock the safety mechanism, the victims opposed them, fearing the smoke would suffocate them.
Finally, the fire department decided to take charge. “We got a fork lift and lifted the cabin up one floor,” said Sudesh Shinde, fire officer in Kalyan. It was only around 5.45 am that the cabin was brought to the first floor and the 17 people rescued.
What went wrong
The victims were angry that the lift did not have an attendant. “They started telling us that the lift got stuck because it was overcrowded. But when we got in, there was no warning or alarm. Had there been a guard or attendant, he would have asked some people to get off,” said Chhapru.
The fire department conducted a primary survey of the elevator and submitted a report to the municipal commissioner. “We need to look at the service records and other safety elements at the mall.
Once the detailed inspection is complete we will initiate action,” said Govind Rathod, commissioner of Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation.

Daniels said the mall took full responsibility for the incident. “It was very unfortunate. We are relieved that everybody got out safe.
The lift was serviced on time and we are examining what went wrong. Till then, we are keeping close watch on all the other lifts in the mall,” he said.
At the time of going to press, Kolsewadi police had not registered a case against the mall. “Patrons have not filed an official complaint yet.
They are expected to come in on Monday to file one,” said the senior inspector Jagdish Lohalkar. Many of the patrons do intend to pursue the matter.
“We were lucky to have escaped without any major loss. But there was no attendant in the lift and the mall officials did not know what to do for hours. It is essential that they appoint people to attend to such emergencies,” said Chhapru.
KJo directs emotional scenes of Ra.One?
Jul 27th
King Khan has summoned Karan Johar to London to direct the emotional sequences of Ra.One
Karan Johar is currently in London and shooting for Shah Rukh Khan’s film Ra.One. Karan is directing a couple of scenes for best friend Shah Rukh Khan’s magnum opus since SRK feels that Karan is the lucky mascot. He wants all the luck possible for this film.
Our source said, “Shah Rukh is extremely close to Karan and some days back he had tweeted, inviting Karan to come and direct a couple of scenes for him. SRK wrote that Karan is his lucky mascot and that’s why he wants Karan to do it.
Karan accepted the invitation and so Karan is currently in London shooting a couple of emotional scenes which are his forte, with SRK and Kareena. The schedule of the film has been split into two units for a couple of days. The original director, Anubhav Sinha, will continue to shoot the primary montages and action-packed sequences of the feature. Karan, in the meanwhile, will be shooting the mushier bits.
![]() ![]() |
“Karan left for London on Friday night and has also begun shooting from Monday. He is going to shoot for two days and after that Anubhav Sinha will once again take over as the director of the film,” said a source.
Incidentally the combination of SRK and Karan has not failed at the box-office so far, starting with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai up to the recently-released My Name Is Khan. Let’s hope that this superstitious arrangement doesn’t cause any tears for King Khan.
KJo in the meanwhile was too busy shooting to comment.
