Mirror caught director Rajkumar Santoshi play out a rather unusual role at Mehboob Studios the other day. The filmmaker showed off his riding skills to the lead pair of his next – Phata Poster Nikla Hero – Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D Cruz. While Shahid looked on in wonder, a brave Ileana did manage to get into the equine spirit of things.

Sanjay Dutt on his first hit – Rocky

As told to Mehul S Thakkar (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 29, 2012)

I was just 22 when I did Rocky. The film was designed for me. Directed by my dad (late) Sunil Dutt and produced by Amarjeet, it was meant to be my launch pad.

We had a grand mahurat at Mehboob Studios and started shooting the film. Unfortunately, a few days into the shoot, my mother fell ill and my father had to take her to the US for treatment. He was by her side all through and couldn’t return to resume shooting. After much thought, he put the onus of completing the film on close friend Raj Khosla. It was a big thing both for Raj ji to accept that kind of responsibility and for my father to give it to him. Finally, it was Raj ji who shot the film’s climax and edited it.

And while I eagerly awaited Rocky’s release, tragedy struck in the form of my mother’s demise. I was in such a state of shock that I couldn’t enjoy my moment in the sun when it finally came. The only consolation was that my mom had seen my film before passing away. Needless to say, my first hit wasn’t at all exciting or uplifting. I was getting so much feedback but couldn’t respond to any of it. I even signed a couple of films but soon sank into this low phase, which ended with my being sent away for treatment for drug addiction.

I stayed abroad for two years. Upon my return, my father told me he would no longer put in a word for me. I remember his words clearly. “Go and struggle. Find work,” he told me. And so I struggled and landed one More >

Cops, cakes & happy ending-a day in the life of Salman

Raju Shelar and Abhijit Sathe (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 27, 2012)

Much like his films, a day in the life of Salman Khan is quite a roller coaster of emotions. A day before his birthday, which happens to co-incide with a court date for the infamous hit-and-run case, we followed the star to capture his many moods and moments on camera.

Salman’s day started around 1.15 pm. There were smiles and plenty of happy vibes as Salman with sisters Alvira, Arpita and brother Sohail stepped out of the Galaxy Apartments threshold. A quick chat before the siblings went their separate ways.

Sallu along with Arbaaz went just round the corner to Mehboob Studios where he was greeted by one of his youngest fans. In fact, the little boy wore his pink sunglasses a la Chulbul Pandey, and got petted by his favourite star as well. Salman then moved on to meet a few reporters who had questions about his birthday plans and New Year celebrations.

Salman sailed through the interactions with his signature poise, till the appearance of a couple of cops. Apparently they had been waiting at the studios to serve summons to the actor in connection with an application filed by RTI activist Santosh Daundkar regarding the hit-and-run case. Mirror found out that the application says that false evidence has been submitted in the case to protect the actor. And the additional chief metropolitan magistrate has sought the actor’s appearance on Thursday.

The actor gets candid about his track record at the box office and challenges his critics to speak out loud in the open

Kunal M Shah (MID-DAY; December 21, 2012)

Salman Khan is busy promoting his upcoming film, which also marks the debut of his brother Arbaaz Khan as a director. Khan who is known to hate giving interviews to the media is thankfully at his candid best today. Chilling between a series of tete-a-tetes at Bandra’s Mehboob Studios, Salman Khan talks to us…

Is Dabangg 2 going to be your birthday treat? If people enjoy the film then it is a Christmas and birthday treat. Agar picture nahi chali to kaunsa treat? Jis hisaab se humko reactions mille hai, they are similar to what the first Dabangg was, so I think we are in the safe zone. I think emotionally, ethically and principally this film is correct. It is larger than the earlier one but neither very similar to the first one, nor very different.

But these days audiences come to see only Salman Khan in a film? No yaar. It’s a whole package. Salman Khan ne bahut badi badi bhi di hai (flops). Now if I do a pakao film, which has lot of bhashanbaazi, no one will come to watch. Dabangg is a film which people can watch with their friends, family and girlfriend and have fun.

People talk about your successful streak now but you had given nine straight hits when you started your career? Yes, there were nine films before Love flopped. That’s why I say let the audience decide. Tab mera dimmag agar kharab hona hota to More >

Aamir Khan visits Salman Khan on the sets of Dabangg 2

MID-DAY (December 7, 2012)

The ‘Dabangg 2′ team which was shooting in Mehboob Studios, Bandra had a very special visitor on the sets.

Our insider sources tell us that visiting our Chulbul Pandey (in his uniform avatar) was none other than good friend Aamir Khan!

The actor who was shooting in the neighborhood decided to drop in on the sets for a quick chat with Salman Khan. The duo was seen sharing quite a few jokes, reliving their Andaaz Apna Apna days.

A source close to the team said, “When Aamir sir heard that Salman bhai was shooting in the neighborhood, he made it a point to come and visit him after wrapping up his shoot. Salman bhai was very happy with this kind gesture of Aamir sir and both of them chatted for quite a long time. Bhai even showed him a little footage of what we had shot that day.”

Well, we’re sure having the two Khans together on the sets would have been a fabulous day for the crew!

An Arbaaz Khan Production’s film, Dabangg 2 stars Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Prakash Raj, Vinod Khanna and Arbaaz Khan.

I can’t fight, Chulbul Pandey can-Salman Khan

Salman tells us all we want to know about his alter ego and why he does not approve of Abhinav Kashyap’s ‘tutor’

Mehul S Thakkar (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 29, 2012)

We caught up with Salman Khan at Mehboob Studios, in between meetings, interviews and sporting a new hairstyle. Salman breezed through the 60 minutes with a cigarette he chose not to light and in great spirits. Excerpts.

How much has marriage and fatherhood changed Chulbul Pandey in Dabangg 2? The character doesn’t change. Chulbul Pandey was going through a very unhappy phase. He had a step brother, his mother was married to somebody else, his father was no more, he was in two minds about trusting his brother. Pandeyji is now a father, the head of the family. He is in a good space. But then comes an emotional jhatka, he goes back to being the old Chulbul Pandey.

Does being married and being in a happy space mean he picks up the grocery on his way home? (Smiles) Check that out for yourself. But yes, you will see a lot of sweet bits of him.

How much of Salman is there in Chulbul Pandey? I don’t know. Just that sometimes I cannot react when I should; but Chulbul can. There are times when I should be tackling things head on, but then decide to step back, take the beating. But Chulbul takes charge.

Chulbul is full of spunky one-liners. Do you come up with them spontaneously or just stick to the script? When you are writing it, you are writing it in the room. But when you go to the set, it’s a different More >

Mirror catches the actress on the heavily guarded sets of Dabangg 2 while she shoots for the item number – Fevicol

Prachi Kadam (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 7, 2012)

Barely a month since her wedding and Kareena Kapoor is already busy shooting. And the first assignment she has taken up post marriage is the much publicised item song in Salman Khan’s Dabangg 2 – Fevicol. Bebo along with the crew had been busy shooting the dance number that promises to be more ‘entertaining’ than Munni in Dabangg for the last two days in Mumbai’s Mehboob Studios when Mirror lensman Raju Shelar managed to get a sneak preview of the actress on the sets.

In the studio premises, we spotted the actress sporting a nose ring and a 70’s style bouffant. On investigating further, we learnt that the song will have a very ‘Lucknowi’ flavour to it. A source told Mirror, “The sets for the song has been inspired by the ‘gallis of Lucknow’. The dancers are also dressed accordingly. Manish Malhotra, who designed Bebo’s wardrobe for the song flew down to Lucknow specially to acquire elements for the dress.” Though the picture, taken in between the shots shows the actress sporting a oversized shirt, in the song, Bebo will sport a black lungi similar to the one her sister Karisma wore in the 90s’ chartbuster Sarkailiyo Khatiya. “Manish has taken special care in the detailing of Bebo’s attire,” added the source. According to sources, the song has a very rustic look and feel. We also learnt that Bebo would complete More >

Karan Johar spends 2 hrs with Salman on Dabangg sets?

The filmmaker drops by on the sets of Dabangg 2 at Mehboob Studios to bond with Salman for two hours

Mehul S Thakkar (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 7, 2012)

On Tuesday, while Kareena was busy grooving to Farah Khan’s choreography and tunes of Sajid-Wajid, a surprise visitor landed on the sets of Dabangg 2 at Mehboob Studios. Keeping the speculations about a Salman-KJo film alive that started doing the rounds ever since the filmmaker offered Khan a role on the sets of Bigg Boss 6, Karan Johar dropped by to meet the actor.

And he was not the only visitor. Along with Karan, the entire Khan brigade – Arpita, Alvira and Atul turned up to see their Bhai shoot the dance number as well. However, it was the filmmaker’s presence that drew all the attention. An eyewitness told Mirror, “Karan came by around 5pm and stayed on for two hours on the sets. He was busy chatting with Salman. They looked quite friendly. He even spent some time with Kareena.” Incidentally, this is not the first time Karan landed up on Bebo’s film sets. When the actress was shooting for Halkat Jawaani in Heroine, KJo had dropped by to meet her. However, this time around Karan according to the eyewitness was seen spending more time with Salman.

Security lapse on Dabangg 2 set

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 29, 2012)

On Thursday evening, six men suddenly appeared on the sets of Dabangg 2 in Mehboob Studios (Bandra) and even shook hands with Salman Khan, who initially thought they were members of the crew. It took the actor a while to realise something was amiss…

Immediately, his personal bodyguards swung into action and threw the intruders out not only from the sets but also from the studios. But not before the actor’s team had given an earful to the Mehboob Studios’ officials, for this security lapse.

In fact, the security has been beefed up from Friday to avoid such incidents in the future.

Explaining what exactly transpired, an eyewitness told this newspaper, “Six men suddenly came on the set as Salman was gearing up for a scene. They moved around Salman for a while. A few of them then went up to him and stretched out their hands for a handshake. Salman calmly shook hands thinking they were from the crew. Suddenly, his sixth sense told him something was fishy. He had this uncanny feeling that they were neither crew members nor invited guests.”

So what were Salman’s 12 security guards doing when all of this happened? Wasn’t it part of their duty to avert such an incident? Said the witness, “Those twelve guards are Salman’s personal guards. They don’t stand like chowkidars at the door of his every set. They are mostly either around him or his parked vehicle. Mehboob Studios’ security that was patrolling the set is to be blamed.”

‘Allah Duhai’ song recreated for ‘Race 2′

Abbas-Mustan’s hit song has been recreated for their action sequel will features Saif, Deepika, John and Jacqueline

Kunal M Shah (MID-DAY; August 9, 2012)

Four years after their Allah Duhai Hai track from Abbas-Mustan’s Race went on to become a chartbuster, the makers of the sequel have decided to recreate the song in the film. It is currently being shot at Mehboob Studios.

Producer Ramesh Taurani says, “We have retained the same phrase Allah duhai hai… and changed the remaining lyrics and are shooting a lavish song. The song will be picturised on Anil Kapoor, Ameesha Patel, John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. We decided that since the song was such a big hit, we should use it in Part 2 as well.”

A while ago, Taurani was in the news for his alleged row with Deepika Padukone regarding her dates for the film. The producer says, “Deepika has already shot with us for around 50 days and she is also part of this song.”

Whatever issues we had, we sat across the table and solved it before our Turkey schedule. She will emerge as the surprise element in the film.
