The year 2010-11 could be well termed as a Renaissance year for the Hindi film industry. While big budget films such as Raavan, Kites, Action Replayy, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey and Guzaarish failed to set the Box Office on fire, smaller films such as Udaan, Peepli [LIVE], Tere Bin Laden, LSD, Phas Gaye Re Obama & Dhobi Ghat etc. with relatively lesser known stars and debutant directors (in most cases) won both critical acclaim and commercial success.
Most of these films were made at a limited budget and focussed more on their content rather than big stars and exotic locations. An interesting part is the fact that even the marketing strategy used to promote these films was quite different and subtle targeting a niche audience.
As a unique case study we take a look at 3 such off-beat films namely Dhobi Ghat, Love, Sex Aur Dhokha (LSD) and Udaan to try and understand how an innovative marketing strategy helped in the film finding its target audience.
Any Aamir Khan Productions’ film always generates tremendous hype and curiosity given the actor’s penchant for quality cinema. If needed, Aamir could have cashed in on this very hype by promoting wifey’s directorial debut Dhobi Ghat as a film for all. However, Aamir didn’t want his loyal audience to feel cheated and adopted a marketing strategy which not many would adopt.
Perhaps, the most poignant insight came from an industry insider who notes that the More >

Small is undoubtedly big in Bollywood these days. UTV and Reliance, two of the biggest corporate houses operating in Bollywood, reeling under the failure of their big-budgeted juggernauts in 2010-11 are now focusing on cost-effective projects rather than prestigious directorial names.
But the corporate house that has really and truly belled the costly cat is Viacom 18. Their filmmaking affiliate Studio 18 rejoicing in the budget-friendly success of Aanand L.Rai’s Tanu Weds Manu this week has decided to let the axe fall on their biggest project Boodha, bringing together Amitabh Bachchan with Jagannath Puri, one of the hottest directors of Telugu cinema.
Viacom/Studio 18 has cancelled a huge event that was planned last month to introduce the entire cast and director of Boodha to the media in Mumbai.
Says a source, “It was planned by Viacom as the mother of all mahurats. Mr. Bachchan was going to appear in his cool-dude tinted hair and dyed-bearded avatar with his leading ladies. Puri Jagannath was going to be introduced as Telugu cinema’s hotshot filmmaker. All plans for this mega-event were suddenly aborted. After the release and success of Tanu Weds Manu, Viacom/Studio 18 has realized that it isn’t the hype or the budget that sells a film to the audience. They immediately instructed Puri Jagannath to follow cost-cutting measures in Boodha.”

Tusshar Kapoor held a special Singles bash on Valentines Day (Feb 14) for all his single friends and cast and crew of his forthcoming release Shor In The City. The highlight of this bash was a special drink called the ‘Shor Shot’ prepared by Tusshar himself.
Bollywood Hungama spoke to Tusshar to find out what went behind the making of this special drink. “Well the idea was to have fun in a different way and hence we had this bash celebrating Being Single on Valentines Day. The ‘Shor Shot’ is a fun, trippy drink just like our film Shor In the City.”
On being asked to reveal the concoction of the ‘Shor Shot’, Tusshar said, “The ‘Shor Shot’ is a concoction of Tequila, Gin, Vodka, White Rum (Bacardi) and Cranberry. All of us including Sophie, Lovely Singh, some of my office staff and my single friends from the media had a blast.”
Now that the partying is over and done with, Tusshar is gearing up for the promotional activities for his next release Shor In The City which releases on April 28. Besides Tusshar, the film features Nikhil Dwivedi, Preeti Desai, Radhika Apte and internationally renowned actor Sendhil Ramamurthy.
When ordered to stay in Mumbai to promote Saat Khoon Maaf instead of accompanying the director for its screening in Berlin, the actress had an argument with him
Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 19, 2011)
As Saat Khoon Maaf begins its box-office journey today, rumours already suggest that Vishal Bhardwaj has decided to work with Priyanka Chopra again in his next.
That Vishal and Priyanka had a major difference of opinion earlier this week is thus very shocking. What went wrong?
Apparently, Priyanka, who has been promoting the film, was very keen to join Vishal when he left for the Berlin Film Festival on Wednesday.
Says a source, “Priyanka really wanted to be in Berlin. After all, Saat Khoon Maaf is as much her film as Vishal’s. She’s the face of the film, which was being screened in the ‘panorama section’ of the Festival.
This was the film’s first screening at an international forum. Naturally, she wanted to be with Vishal at this momentous occasion.”
Vishal, they say, put his foot down and chose not to take Piggy while arguing that she could not leave Mumbai at the time of the release, especially when last-minute promotions had to be in full swing.
Says a source, “Priyanka reasoned with Vishal. She offered to intensify the publicity and finish everything in two days prior to the release date, so she could be in Berlin for the festival.
Even Vishal’s wife Rekha Bhardwaj intervened on Priyanka’s behalf and tried coaxing him to let her More >

The hugely popular TV show called KHICHDI was made into a film called KHICHDI – THE MOVIE. Keen to make the brand stronger, its makers are now planning to make a sequel to the film. Yes, you read it right – KHICHDI – THE MOVIE will now have a sequel. Jamnadas Majethia [J.D.], who produced the film, confirms the news, “We’re working on it [sequel]. The scripting is in progress right now,” he divulges.
So what prompted J.D. to make a sequel? “Though KHICHDI – THE MOVIE did well at the box-office – we recovered our costs and even made decent profits – a section of the media never gave the film its due. We kept wondering whether to go ahead with its sequel or abort the plans, but after the film was telecast on TV, the feedback we received was so hugely positive and overwhelming that we were encouraged to go ahead with its sequel,” J.D. reveals.
The title as well as the star cast of the sequel will be decided once J.D. and writer-director Aatish Kapadia are through with its scripting.

Our source said, “Gulshan had to fly down to L.A. to explain to them that he was speaking to the Indian media, as they were curious about the film.
However, on being pulled up by Bill Duke, his son, Sanjay, who works in Hollywood, with MGM films, proved to be the peacemaker. Gulshan met Bill and now everything is resolved.”
When contacted, Grover confirmed the news and said, “Yes, my son works for MGM and he has his share of friends back there. I met Bill and everything is fine now.
I told him that the Indian media love him and his work. They were curious about the film and that is why I spoke to them.”
BT finds out why…

It had to happen. The surfeit of media reportage on the Saifeena engagement/marriage has finally got to Saif. He has requested his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor and everyone around her not to speak to the media on the subject of their impending marriage. “Don’t use the ‘M’ word,” the Junior Nawab of Pataudi has cautioned everyone.
In her interviews from the start of 2011, Kareena has tried her best to stay clear of all questions about marriage because she didn’t wish to upset her beau. “But the engagement story in a newspaper earlier this week is the final straw that broke the camel’s back,” says an insider.
The insider from Saifeena’s camp called BT to say, “Both of them have had it up to here with these constant marriage and engagement stories; especially this news report on how Kareena preferred to get engaged rather than get married. Honestly, it is the same newspaper that a while ago carried the story that Saif and Kareena were married. If the marriage story is true, then the engagement one is false. Neither of the stories were substantiated.”
News has it that the huge rock that Kareena is wearing on her engagement finger has been given to her by Saif three years ago when they had just begun their relationship. The insider said, “Saif gifts Kareena jewellery quite often. Everytime he gifts her a diamond or an emerald, it doesn’t really qualify as an More >
Earlier, it was questions about her break-up with Salman Khan and now all that’s on Katrina’s mind is the recent IT raid.
Post the raid, Kat made her first public appearance last week at the book launch of Tonight This Savage Rite The Love Poems of Kamala Das and Pritish Nandy.
But very few know that before coming to the event Katrina was very apprehensive; she was scared that the media would ask her all sorts of questions about the IT raid.Katrina at the book launch
Our source said, “Katrina was in two minds before coming to the event. However, Pritish Nandy assured her that he would take care of the situation.”
When contacted, Nandy said, “During the conference I said that we should limit the scope of questions to the event, poetry and literature and stick to that. The media has a habit of asking all kinds of questions and we had to maintain the dignity of the event.
A book launch is a book launch. The idea was to have a sense of fun with a lot of dignity. As far as Katrina being wary is concerned, obviously she would be wary, anybody would. It was not a nice experience for her.”
Both actresses made their first public appearances following a tax raid at their residence on Monday
Saumit Singh (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 28, 2011)
Bollywood divas Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif both made public appearances on Thursday, their first since the I-T raids on their residences on Monday.
While Katrina was present at a Bandra bookstore for the launch of a novel by Pritish Nandy and Kamala Das, Priyanka attended an award show at the MMRDA grounds at Bandra Kurla Complex.
Both actresses seemed to have found their stride and their voice, hitting out against the several unconfirmed reports doing the rounds about claims of spectacular seizures made by the I-T department.
Agency reports on Thursday indicated that an unaccounted Rs 6 crore had been found at Priyanka Chopra’s residence. Reacting almost immediately, a spokesperson of the actress said, “We deny the many malicious rumours being spread in the media on the basis of some unidentified sources.
We are extending all cooperation to the Income Tax authorities in their ongoing investigations and are restraining ourselves from commenting any further on the issue pending completion of the investigative process.”
A senior I-T official told Mumbai Mirror that while prima facie there were definitely some doubts about some documents which indicated that an amount close to Rs 6 crore could be unaccounted for, it was much too early to categorically declare it tax evasion.
