David Dhawan’s younger son Varun gave up management to debut in KJo’s Student Of The Year

Meena Iyer (BOMBAY TIMES; August 1, 2012)

Varun Dhawan is to the manor born. The younger son of yesteryear commercial pasha David Dhawan; this youngster grew up on a regular feed of mainstream cinema. Having watched him and his older brother Rohit (he directed Desi Boyz) since childhood, we knew that Varun had an opinion on cinema even when he was knee-high.

In all fairness, his parents David and Lali didn’t want him to join showbiz until he had a sound education and packed him off to Manchester to enrol for a course in business management.

But like they say when your heart beats for the movies; then seeing your face on the marquee is all you really care about.

So he took that flight from Manchester to Mumbai; or should be we say, straight from Manchester to Karan Johar’s office and impressed upon the filmmaker how he’d like to assist him on My Name Is Khan.

And one day when he was standing in for Shah Rukh Khan, Karan looked through the lens and realised that Varun had the “cinema-face’’ that could well make it to the silver screen. Karan recalls how Farah Khan had walked in on the MNIK sets, saw Varun and Sidharth Malhotra and said to Kjo, “God! Such nice-looking assistants you have.’’

But Varun isn’t all about good looks alone. He had also done a few acting workshops and when it was time to audition for Student Of The More >

Lawyer Samant Kumar finally faces off with his latest crush, the peppy and garrulous Parineeti Chopra

Divashri Sinha (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 29, 2012)

While we waited in the expansive recess of the Yash Raj Studios in Andheri, 24-year-old advocate Samant Kumar sat cool and composed eager to meet his current favourite, Parineeti Chopra, (Priyanka Chopra’s younger cousin) to make an appearance.

Unperturbed by the 45-minute delay, he patiently looked around the spacious lobby and mentally geared up for his cross questioning session ahead. Parineeti arrived, dressed in a fitted summer dress, make-up and hair freshly touched up, flustered and apologising profusely. Soon the two settled into the a small conference room and Parineeti with an endearing smile, broke into conversation in both Hindi and English, gauging what Samant would be comfortable with. While she took her time to get her nose powdered one last time, and make sure the camera gets her on the ‘good’ side of her face, she tells Samant about the fallacy of the glamour world. “It looks very glamorous with the parties and pictures, but its not,” she quips. “So do you not party?” he asks. “No,” she says defensively, “It’s just the public perception. There is no glamour. Otherwise you wouldn’t hear about casting couches and of people being misused.” “Do you drink or smoke?” he asks. Clearly her interrogation had begun. “No, I don’t do either. I never liked the taste of alcohol and cigarettes se mujhe nafrat hai. Thing More >

Hollywood star begs DJ not to play any Grease songs at Mumbai party; prepares for a month-long break in Goa and Jaipur

Saumit Singh (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 28, 2010)

At the after party of an awards function on Sunday night, the British DJ in the house was up to his neck with requests for numbers from Grease and Saturday Night Fever. But to the dismay of the Bollywood glitteratti present to honour John Travolta, the man just refused to oblige.

“Believe it or not, John’s warned me against just that. He’s offered to drop me off to Manchester on his way back but he told me that if he hears me play even one of his songs tonight, the deal is off,” the DJ explained to a guest. Juan Kidd, one of UK’s leading DJs, specialises in house music and is big on the underground scene.

But Manchester seems to be just one of the several destinations Travolta has in mind. According to sources, the avid flyer intends to clock up some serious miles before landing on his private airstrip in Florida.

In fact, Travolta has been at the receiving end of green activists for the enormous carbon emissions he racks up every year because of his extensive flying, not that it’s made any difference to his jet-setting ways.

While his official two-day trip to India ended on Sunday night, it kicks off a personal, month-long vacation during which he will be travelling to Jaipur and More >

Vijay Galani, the supposedly cash strapped producer of Veer, snaps up rights to three finale shows of AR Rahman’s world tour for approximately Rs 10 crore By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 16, 2010)

AR Rahman continues to scale new heights. The music maestro has sold his three finale shows (Manchester on 23 July, Birmingham on 24 July, London on 25 July) of his forthcoming world tour to begin in June for a whopping Rs 10 crore (approximately).

Vijay Galani, producer of the Salman Khan starrer Veer, has bought the three shows. The deal was finalised last week in Mumbai.

Galani refused to quote the price but confirmed that he has bought the three shows. “Yes, I have purchased the finale shows of AR Rahman’s concert and I am looking forward to the big occasion,” said Galani.

But didn’t Galani suffer huge losses in Veer? Galani replied, “Veer and AR Rahman concerts are two different things altogether. What has Veer got do with this?”

A close friend of Galani confirmed that the Veer producer has indeed bought the three shows to be held in Birmingham, Manchester and London for Rs 10 crore. Galani’s friend said, “Though in practice, the deal has been struck for Rs 10 crore,

Rahman will bear the cost of lights, sound effects, editing and the maintenance of his big team throughout the shows.”

“AR Rahman has a big fan following wherever he goes. Galani will earn a lot through these shows. It’s a very good business deal,” More >
