Hum Tum team Saif Ali Khan and Kunal Kohli to come together for another love story
The Kunal Kohli-directed Hum Tum had turned out to be one of biggest hits of Saif Ali Khan’s career. Now they are coming together again for another project very soon.
Saif has confirmed the development. “Yes I am doing a film with Kunal. We intend to start the film by the end of this year.”
Kunal Kohli elaborated, “Saif and I have worked together in two films – Hum Tum and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. We have decided to make one more romantic film together. It will begin with a short schedule in October and we’ll wrap it up by December or January. It’s a very interesting film in which Saif plays a rich businessman.
He is very stylish and he gets love from the most unexpected quarter. Saif has always been loved in romantic roles, be it Hum Tum or Salaam Namaste – or even his home production Love Aaj Kal. Romantic films have also proved lucky for me. I made Fanaa and am now producing Break Ke Baad.”
It has been a good year for debutant director Danish Aslam. His film Break Ke Baad went on the floors and he is now set to marry actress Shruti Seth. They have been dating for over four years now and Danish proposed to her in December last year.
Our source said, “Shruti met Danish on the sets of Fanaa when he was assisting Kunal Kohli. During the making of the film, they fell in love and have been seeing each other for the last four-and-a-half years. In fact, Shruti always says that Kunal is responsible for their relationship. Their family and common friends have been asking them to tie the knot soon and eventually Danish proposed to Shruti on her birthday (December 18) last year. He actually went down on his knees and proposed to her. She immediately agreed and both the families have met. A wedding date has been fixed for October or November.”
It’s a double delight for the director as he had been waiting to cast the right stars for his film. The source added, “Danish has been assisting Kunal Kohli and he has been planning his own film for some time now. Now that Danish’s debut film Break Ke Baad is on the floors with Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone, they decided that this is the right time to get married. Shruti, incidentally, is not acting in the film.”
Shruti Seth confirmed the news and said, “It was such a romantic proposal that it was difficult to say no! I had to say yes and we are both very happy. It’s an important year for us as Danish’s debut film will also release this year.”

Deepika Padukone who’s in Delhi to shoot for Danish Aslam’s Break Ke Baad was hit by a strong current of deja vu.
Just a year ago she was in Delhi shooting for Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal. Even there her co-star Saif Ali Khan had his lady-love Kareena Kapoor along, so that Deepika had voluntarily kept to herself.
“Not this time!” reports a source from Delhi. “Imran and Avantika have made Deepika feel most welcome and a part of their circle. In fact Deepika is completely at home hanging around with Imran and Avantika.”
A private person by nature and known to stay aloof Deepika has for the first time become so gregarious during shooting.
Says the source, “During the shooting of Love Aaj Kal, Deepika barely exchanged anything beyond a hello with her co-star Saif in London and Delhi. Even with Neil Nitin Mukesh whom she just shot with Deepika was polite. But with Imran, Deepika is at her warmest, thanks to Avantika who has gone out of her way to make Deepika comfortable.”
“You’re taller than me,” was Deepika’s first reaction when they started shooting together. Imran Khan and his fiance Avantika landed in Delhi a day before Deepika.
Says producer Kunal Kohli, “Deepika and Imran shot in and around Delhi’s streets from Wednesday. Everywhere they were greeted by mobs. Avantika has been a big support for Deepika. Though Imran and Deepika are friends they are fiercely competitive on screen.”
The pair need to have separate hair-colour schemes for the pre- and post- interval halves of the film.
Says Kunal Kohli, “Both Imran and Deepika showed up in Delhi looking younger trendier .Their clothes are younger and cooler than before. We’ve brought in completely new designers for Deepika and Imran.”
While Imran’s clothes have been done by the Delhi-based duo of designer Harmeet -Neha, Deepika’s designer is Ayesha, a former assistant to Anaita Shroff. Informs Kunal. “We want Deepika and Imran to look so cool together that they become instant youth icons.”
The idea, in case anyone misses the point, is that Deepika hopes to form a long-lasting screen pair with Imran.
Says Deepika, “Well I do have two distinct looks in the first and second half of Break De Baad. Beyond that it’s too early to discuss anything.”
Imran Khan’s hair growth now decides his shooting schedule. The actor has acquired a new haircut for Danish Aslam’s Break Ke Baad which has resulted in the delay of one song that remains to be shot for Punit Malhotra’s I Hate Luv Storys (IHLS).
Imran Khan is currently in Delhi shooting for Break Ke Baad. He has cut his hair short and got a completely new look for the film.
A source reveals, “Imran has completed the shoot for IHLS and only one song is remaining. Imran’s new look, which is very young and trendy, is quite different from the IHLS look. Now he will be shooting for Break Ke Baad for around three weeks and as soon as his hair grows, he will go back and shoot the last song for Punit’s film.”
Producer of Break ke Baad, Kunal Kohli, confirms, “Karan Johar and Punit were sweet enough to adjust Imran’s dates. Initially, we thought we will shoot with Imran after he completes the song but it gets very hot in Delhi and we also required combined dates of a lot of stars together for our movie.”
He adds, “His hair will grow in a couple of weeks, and he will then shoot the remaining song. It’s just a song, so it is not a big problem for anyone in that case.”

Shahid Kapoor is open to teaming up with the fresher, newer talent in Bollywood. In fact, his father Pankaj Kapur is said to have just signed on Sonam for their home production Mausam. However, reports which said that Shahid and Deepika Padukone will be a number on screen… or are a number off screen is completely untrue. The paparazzi started the rumour that Shahid was paying a secret visit to Deepika when the actor was spotted parking his car in the building complex where she stays. Two and two were then added to make 22! However, the fact of the matters remains that Deepika hasn’t signed any film with Shahid. Nor is she friends with him as has been insinuated by a section of the media. Reports say that Shahid was in her neighbourhood to visit filmmaker Kunal Kohli. And it become convenient for tongues to wag. High on Deepika’s wish-list of co-stars are Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan. She may even team up with Shahid somewhere down the line. But right now — Shahid and Deepika ain’t happening. Sources say that a social networking site started this whole thing on how Deepika should team up with Shahid and even specified that Karan Johar should direct the movie. Perhaps that’s why a casual visit by Shahid to Deepika’s neighbourhood got so much attention.

Veteran producer Tahir Hussain, who breathed his last on Tuesday morning, was buried yesterday evening after the arrival of his son Aamir and daughter-in-law Kiran.

Sharmila Tagore to play an almost autobiographical role as Deepika Padukone’s mother in Break Ke Baad
Sharmila Tagore thinks it’s the dimples that qualify her as Deepika Padukone’s mother in Danish Aslam’s Break Ke Baad. But there’s much more to this aesthetic mother-daughter casting than meets the eye.
Sharmila’s is a pivotal role, on par with Deepika’s. It’s the role of a beautiful retired actress, still in her element, who gives up her career in her prime to be a hands on mother to her daughter, played by Deepika. Sharmila, of course, must’ve immediately indentified with the role as it’s strikingly similar to what she chose to do in real life when at the pinnacle of her stardom, she chose to become a wife and mother, putting her exceptional career on the back-burner.
Sharmila said, “When Kunal (Kohli, producer) asked me to do the film, I immediately empathised with the part, which I seldom do these days. It’s a challenging role and one very close to my heart. I immediately fell in love with it.”
Sharmila added, “I think Deepika and I would look like mother and daughter because of our dimples. But my first question to Kunal was, she’s so much taller than me. How could my character have produced such a tall daughter? But seriously, that’s where acting comes in. We don’t have to look the part but must feel like mother and daughter.”
Kunal Kohli said, “My director Danish and I could only think of Sharmilaji for this role. I’ve been watching her films from the time I was a teenager. Amar Prem is one of my favourite films. When I started making films it was my dream to work with two actors Rishi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore. I got to work with Chintuji in Hum Tum and Fanaa. Now it’s Sharmilaji. Of course, like Rishi Kapoor in Fanaa she’ll get top billing in Break Ke Baad.”
Saif Ali Khan breaks his silence after receiving the Padma Shri and speaks exclusively to BT
MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; January 27, 2010)
Of course, his career hasn’t been a smooth ride in the last three months. There has been a speed-breaker called Kurbaan; but honestly, superstars don’t get shaken by the odd hiccup. And when you see Saif, calm, composed, confident… you realise he is now moving in another space.
Happy about having bagged the fourth highest national honour, the Padma Shri, the 39-year-old actor says, “I’m thrilled. It is a lovely feeling. When I heard the news, I thought it is an honour that should perhaps have been given to someone slightly more senior. However, that was a fleeting thought. Seconds later I was rejoicing. I also think the success of Love Aaj Kal last year has something to do with this honour. Honours are gratifying because I don’t go out of my way to organise awards.’’
He remembers how he felt slightly shortchanged when Filmfare gave him the trophy as Best Actor in a Comic Role for Hum Tum but gave his costar, Rani Mukherjee, the Best Actress award the same year. “I accepted it because I value Filmfare. It was a bit odd that I was chosen as the Best Comic actor. However, when I received the National Award for the same film, I felt vindicated,’’ he says.
That apart, Saif knows that this certainly is a phase of his life and career that he must celebrate. “Besides thanking the obvious people like my family and loved ones for being with me through it all and in my moment of glory, I must thank a whole load of filmmakers without whom I wouldn’t be in this cushy position,’’ he says. “Be it Yash Chopra, Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra, Imtiaz Ali, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Ram Gopal Varma, Vishal Bharadwaj, Sriram Raghavan, Ramesh Taurani, Kunal Kohli or Siddharth Anand, all of these film-makers have contributed to my career.’’
Busting the myth that he is very laid back and doesn’t know where he is headed, the actor says, “That’s the general impression. But believe me, I have the next five years of my career worked out. I know where I want to be at 45 and I know what I wish to be doing when I’m 50 years of age. I live on tenth floor with my office on the second floor and I spend a lot of time with my CA/lawyers working out my investments. I want my children to be comfortable. I want my lady love to be completely and absolutely cared for. For someone who looks like I don’t care a fig about things… I’m sorted in my head.’’
Deepika Padukone is on the prowl…
MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; January 23, 2010)
When you’re super confident, gorgeous and as successful as Deepika Padukone, then you don’t waste time crying over split relationships. You hold your head on your tall frame high and just glide like a diva. That is exactly what Deepika is doing. She refutes talk that she has immersed herself neck-deep in work because she wants no time to think. Laughing aloud she says, “Love Aaj Kal is the second most successful film of 2009 after 3 Idiots. Saif Ali Khan, Imtiaz Ali, Dinesh Vijjan and I didn’t feel the need to put out advertisements in newspapers saying ours is one of the biggest hits simply because it is a huge hit. And, it so happens that by virtue of this super-hit, I’ve bagged some super duper assignments.” This year will have Deepika in Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se, Pradeep Sarkar’s next with Neil Nitin Mukesh, Farhan Akhtar’s Kartik Calling Kartik and Sajid Khan’s Houseful. Besides these she also starts work on a romantic film with Imran Khan produced by Kunal Kohli. “With so much happening, I’ve no time to even breathe,” says the actress, who in two years since her debut is knocking on the doors of Bollywood’s czarinas. “I’m so glad that I got this opporutnity to work with Ashutosh,” she says. “He is awesome.” She is fortunate that her roles are also varied. If she will prance in a bikini around Akshay Kumar in Houseful, then she’ll probably walk away with top acting honours for her role as a revolutionary in Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se with Abhishek. In the midst of this packed action, is there anything more she’d like? “Well, I’d like to do a movie with Salman Khan,” she smiles. “And Aamir Khan too.” Ok, and now please don’t put her wish under a scanner and think she’s sending out coded messages to anyone out there. After working with the top bracket — Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshay Kumar and Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika would but naturally veer in the direction of Salman or perhaps even Aamir.

The buzz of anticipation as Shah Rukh Khan arrived at the premiere of 3 Idiots was nearly as loud as the buzz of appreciation for Aamir Khan’s latest turn.
For, the drama his turning up promised could be as much fun as the movie playing on the screens inside IMAX, Wadala.
SRK’s bête noire Salman Khan had arrived well in time for the movie to begin and the waiting media and star-gazers turned away disappointed when there seemed to be no sign of Shah Rukh Khan, while hosts for the evening no doubt heaved a sigh of relief.
The last time SRK and Sallu met - at Katrina Kaif’s birthday - the birthday girl had been utterly sidelined in the furious exchange of words between the two superstars, and Aamir Khan had spent the night running the short distance between Salman’s house Galaxy Apartments and SRK’s home Mannat, playing peacemaker.
|Sallu comes out of the screening, sees SRK a few feet away and gives him the full I-wanna-knock-your-teeth glare…|
But never one to back out of awkward situations, Shah Rukh arrived minutes before the film ended and was greeted by Aamir.
Just as Shah Rukh moved to talk to director Kunal Kohli, the show got over and out came Salman Khan. He spied Shah Rukh chatting away and gave him the full benefit of the famous Sallu I-wanna-knock-your-teeth glare. He stared long and hard forcing SRK to turn in his direction, but just then, Aamir said something to Salman, forcing him into a conversation.
By this time, other guests too had swarmed into the area forcing their bodyguards to lead the two stars away and out. Separately.
