Kunal Kapoor replaces Arjun Rampal in Don 2?
Aug 19th
We recently reported that Arjun Rampal is not a part of Farhan Akhtar’s Don 2 anymore. The buzz is that Arjun asked for a huge fee which didn’t go down well with the producers. As a result Arjun opted out of the film. Arjun played Pran’s character Jasjeet in the remake of Don.
The latest is that the Rang De Basanti actor Kunal Kapoor has been roped in to play the part.

Kunal confirms, “I am very excited about the role, as well as being part of a huge franchise like Don. And the fact that I get to share screen space with SRK makes it twice as exciting.”
Ritesh Sidhwani confirms that Kunal is doing an important role in the film but he denies that he has replaced Arjun Rampal.
Says Ritesh, “Kunal hasn’t replaced Arjun in the film. There is no Jasjeet in the film. Instead we have introduced three new parts in the film and Kunal plays one of them and Lara Dutta plays the second one. We still have to cast for the third character. From the original cast we have Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani and Om Puri. When did we say that Arjun was part of Don 2?” he questions.
I am shocked with Lamhaa’s failure-producer

| A still from Lamhaa |
All the fanfare and controversy around Lamhaa turned out to be a flash in the pan eventually. At least for producer Bunty Walia. And he has no qualms in admitting it and that too, quite vociferously.
“I don’t know why I’m confessing but people didn’t turn up to watch Lamhaa,” sighs Bunty. “I am shocked. Despite the strong line of stars and the relevant subject of Kashmir, the film didn’t get any eyeballs. It is clear that Indians are not interested in what is happening in their country.”
Turns out, Bunty isn’t the only one lamenting. Lead actors Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu and Kunal Kapoor, have not been paid.
While Walia doesn’t deny this, he says, “But how can I pay them fully when I haven’t got a single paisa from this film? I have lost Rs 30 crore. Lamhaa has taken my life back by 10 years.”

Despite the loss, the producer stands up for director Rahul Dholakia and the actors. “They all did a fine job,” says Bunty, “I have no complaints with their work.”
Now that Walia is done rummaging for the silver lining, he’s starting afresh. He says, “I will definitely continue to make films but no issue-based ones hereafter.” Bunty and Karan Johar should probably catch up.
Lamhaa-Bonding with Kashmir

Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu and Kunal Kapoor have come back with stories from the beautiful valley
Sharin Wader Butani | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 16, 2010)
Sanjay Dutt has formed a strong bond with Kashmir. He had shot his first film Rocky there and now after three decades, PVR Pictures and GS Entertainment’s Lamhaa, took him back to the valley. The actor says his Kashmiri wife Maanyata has strengthened his bond with the place even more. “Everything about Kashmir has always fascinated me right from my childhood and now being married to a Kashmiri, draws me closer to the valley,” said the actor, who plays the main protagonist of the film which tells the story of real people living in a war-ridden state but who spread the message of peace and harmony.
If Sanjay could identify with the place, Bipasha Basu could relate to her character — a strong-willed, fiery woman named Aziza who’s a revolutionary. But Bips had a hurdle to overcome. “Initially I was not sure whether I could fit the role of a Kashmiri girl because I have a Bengali face. But after director Rahul Dholakia showed me pictures of present day Kashmiri women — the way they cover their heads, the attire they wear — I was certain that I could play the role. I am an actress, my job is to get into the skin of the character,” said Bips, who had many sessions with designer Rocky S to get the perfect look.
“Rahul and the Director of Photography, Jamie, were clear of what colours and tones they wanted to see on me. They wanted a simple, no make-up look with just a thin line of kajal to be used. When you watch the film, you will be seeing Aziza and not Bipasha. I have donned various looks for my films, but this simple look is one of my favourites,” she said. Kunal Kapoor went through some trying times too while shooting for Lamhaa. “This was my first experience shooting in Kashmir, and though the circumstances were difficult, my character in the film was so challenging, that it seemed effortless.”
As for Rahul, he says the journey of Lamhaa will always remain etched in his mind. “I hope the audiences draw a connect with what Kashmir is going through today.” Lamhaa hits the theatres today.

- Kamal Gianchandani and Bunty Walia
Shooting for Bunty Walia’s film in Kashmir was quite a challenge for Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu and Kunal Kapoor
Deepali Dhingra | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 6, 2010)
They say friendships that grow out of hardships, are the strongest. It’s been a decade of knowing each other and evolving for producer Bunty Walia and Sanjay Dutt, but their friendship strengthened the most during the shooting of GS Entertainment’s Lamhaa. The many hours spent shooting in extreme conditions in Kashmir and the challenges they faced together, has made them see each other in a new light.
Says Bunty, “The best thing an actor can do in circumstances when shooting is difficult, is to be supportive. When it came to shooting in the extreme cold of Kashmir, or the extreme heat of Mumbai, Sanju was most cooperative. Even when it came to promotions, he was always there.”
The producer adds that they have gone through many trials and tribulations through the making of this film. “His complete faith in me as a producer and Lamhaa has led to the successful fruition of this film. We have received tremendous support and encouragement from PVR Pictures as well and I appreciate this assistance,” Bunty says.
Sanjay too is happy with the way the film has shaped up. “The premise of Lamhaa is very hard-hitting and interesting. Many congratulations to my friend Bunty for having had the courage and conviction to make a mammoth film like this,” he says.
On his part Kamal Gianchandani, President, PVR Pictures, says, “It’s a brave film, a fine exhibition of Rahul Dholakia’s exceptional story-telling talent and Bunty and Juspreet Singh Walia’s never-say-die leadership. We are looking forward to the film’s release worldwide on July 16.”
Bunty and Juspreet’s production house has had a long standing association with Sanjay and now, they are strengthening the bond even further by joining hands with Sanjay Dutt Productions SDP for a film called Bihaad. “It will be a very different film,” promises Bunty. To be shot in the ravines of Chambal Valley, the film will be about the dacoits in that area. While this alliance hopes to get stronger, both companies will continue to support new and underrepresented filmmakers from around the world to make successful cinema. Here’s to friendship and good films!

Kunal caught climbing neighbour’s house using pipeline?
Jun 30th
Kunal Kapoor was caught climbing into someone’s house using a pipeline

Though Hindi films, Dharmendra in particular, make it seem like cakewalk, climbing vertical sewage pipelines isn’t all that easy. As for the upwardly mobile actor (pun intended) Kunal Kapoor, the stint turned out to be rather ugly. Last week, Kunal was caught climbing the water pipeline of a building in his neighbourhood, in the wee hours of the night.
Says an eyewitness, “Kunal wanted to jump into his neighbour Nimesh’s house through a window. Nimesh stays on the third floor. But before Kunal could reach there, the building’s watchman spotted him climbing the pipe and ordered him to come down immediately.”
Apparently, Kunal and Nimesh are friends. On the fated night, Kunal had decided to play a prank on Nimesh. The plan was that Kunal would climb into Nimesh’s house and would then let the rest of his friends in. They would then rearrange all the furniture in the living room and leave, so Nimesh would get the shock of his life on waking up the next morning.
Clearly, planning isn’t Kunal’s forte. Kunal and his friends got easy access into the building. Nimesh was apparently fast asleep when Kunal started climbing the building, with a few other friends muttering occasional words of support. Destiny had other plans though. “The watchman happened to pass by and spotted Kunal climbing the pipe.
The watchman did not recognise him (Kunal, try a clean-shaven look the next time) as the light was very dim and immediately raised an alarm. Kunal came down as fast as he could, but by then; a few residents from the building were already witnessing the commotion,” said the witness.
Despite a text message, Kunal did not revert with any comment. However, his spokesperson did confirm the incident.
Bipasha’s dubbing trauma
May 27th
By Subhash K. Jha, May 26, 2010 – 12:17 IST
![]() |
At this very moment, Bipasha Basu is going through the biggest challenge of her career. She has to drop her anglicized-Bengali accent and diction completely to sound like the Kashmiri Muslim girl she plays in Rahul Dholakia’s Lamhaa.
Which is easier said than done. Even when Bipasha had done a Bengali film, Rituparno Ghosh’s Shob Charitra Kalpunik, she had been forbidden by the director from dubbing her own lines although Bengali is her mother tongue.
This time, though, Bipasha was determined to not allow her voice-performance to suffer on the grounds of her accent. For months, the actress has been secretly practicing her lines.
And now when the dubbing is finally on, Bipasha with the help of the sound recordist Manoj Sikka is giving the Urdu her best shot.
According to her director Rahul Dholakia, who’s constantly supervising Bipasha dubbing, the actress has made the strongest effort possible to sound like an authentic Kashmiri -Muslim girl.
Says Dholakia, “At the moment I’m simultaneously doing two very different jobs on two of my very different films. While I’m editing my social satire Society, I am supervising the dubbing of my film on Kashmir – Lamhaa. Dubbing the dialogues of a film with as vast a historical-political canvas as Lamhaa is very tough. I wish I could devote more attention to Bipasha. But she’s doing a fine job.”
Says Bipasha, “It is tough, really tough because I don’t really understand Urdu. But I’m never one to shun the urge to learn. I find it great fun. And my director Rahul Dholakia is very patient and chilled out.”
The sound recordist Manoj Sikka has been given the job of monitoring Bipasha’s diction. Says Bipasha, “I’m putting my trust in Rahul’s team and the sound recordist.”
Since the film tackles the sensitive issue of Kashmir militancy, director Dholakia is pretty adamant on getting every nuance right.
While Sanjay Dutt who plays an outsider can get away with his characteristic drawling dialogues, Bipasha Basu and Kunal Kapoor who play Kashmiris have had to slog to do away with their Bengali and Punjabi twangs.
The real status of Sanjay Dutt’s pending films
Apr 20th
By Joginder Tuteja, April 19, 2010 – 13:56 IST

Recently it was reported that Sanjay Dutt is booked till 2011 with multiple projects in floors. Understandably so since he is the only veteran star from the generation of Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Sunny Deol and Mithun Chakraborty, who continues to have a huge fan following and can get audiences rooting for him if he really wishes so.
However, what also remains true is the fact that he is only star amidst other major actors who has the biggest line up of pending/stuck/almost shelved projects up his plate.
The situation today is that Sanju baba has close to a dozen odd projects that are still waiting to reach the deadline in spite of their target release timeline left behind long back.
Joginder Tuteja brings to you the status of where each of these films stand, what their makers have to say, whether these films will ever see the light of the day and if so, then when?

Film: Mr. Fraud
Original plan for release: 2006
Producer: Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd
Director: Abbas -Mustan
Co-stars: Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu, Tanushree Datta
Flashback
This Abbas-Mustan directed comedy had a fruitful London schedule way back in 2006. However, Sanjay Dutt’s personal problems resulted in any further shoot being delayed while there were also hassles around combination dates of all the stars (Ajay Devgn, Bipasha Basu, Tanushree Dutta) as well. Close to 70% of the film was already canned but there was no subsequent progress. Even when Sanjay Dutt resumed work a few months later, there were no signs of revival of Mr. Fraud. Meanwhile, producers Shree Ashtavinayak went ahead and completed Kidnap and Blue with Sanjay Dutt.
Current state
As per Dhaval Mehta of Shree Ashtavinayak, the film can’t yet be classified as ‘shelved’. Even though there hasn’t been any active shooting for the film during last couple of years (the same time period where Abbas-Mustan went ahead and finished three films – Naqaab, Race and Life Partner), Mehta still believes that the film may eventually see the light of the day.
“As of now, Mr. Fraud is on hold. Yes, the film’s shoot had come to a halt a couple of years back, post which Sanjay Dutt wasn’t available”, says Mehta. However, Sanjay Dutt has been seen in a dozen odd movies during last three years. Why couldn’t he spare time for Mr. Fraud? “Well, it’s not just him in the movie. There are other big names like director duo of Abbas and Mustan, Ajay Devgn and Bipasha Basu involved. It is tough to get the combination dates of all”, he defends.
Abbas-Mustan though threw the challenge back to Mehtas when questioned about the delay in film’s shoot. “Please ask the producers about this. After the release of Race, we were ready to get started any time that they would have wanted. We have our dates available since after Race, we didn’t have anything else on floors”, says Abbas.
Final verdict: Uncertain

Film: Bihaad
Original plan for release: 2008
Original producers: Ajanta Arts, G S Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., K Sera Sera
Director: Milan Luthria
Co-stars: Ajay Devgan, Vidya Balan
Flashback
Bihaad was announced with much fanfare 2 years back since it was also meant to be the comeback project of Late Sunil Dutt’s banner Ajanta Arts. Based on a true story, this action drama was also supposed to feature Sanjay Dutt with Ajay Devgn, just like in case of Mr. Fraud. Also, it would have meant yet another outing for director Milan Luthria and Ajay after Kachche Dhaage and Chori Chori. However, the film didn’t go beyond the announcement stage (in 2007), was subsequently revived (in 2008) but could never eventually come on floors. Meanwhile, Milan began work on Once Upon A Time In Mumbai with Ajay.
Current state
“The film hasn’t been shelved and is definitely on. Yes, we were supposed to start in 2007 but then some actors were not available then due to which we had to push the film to 2008″, says Milan Luthria who also blames recession as the prime reason behind the project being on hold, “Bihaad is a large scale film and due to the period of recession in 2008, we had to further keep it on hold. Since the market has turned stronger today, the film is being revived. Also, the producers have changed and now it arrives solely under the banner of Sanjay Dutt Productions.”
He would now begin shooting the film in the winter of 2010. “The film’s plot is such that it has to be shot during winters. We couldn’t shoot the film in last winter since I was occupied with Once Upon A Time In Mumbai. But yes, late this year we should definitely set the ball rolling”, he confirms.
Final verdict: 2011 release (probable)

Film: Chatur Singh Two Star
Original plan for release: 2009
Producer: Mohamed Aslam
Director: Ajay Chandok
Co-stars: Ameesha, Suresh Menon, Anupam Kher
Flashback
The film was announced in 2007 but it was only in the summer of 2008 that the first schedule of this comic caper was shot. Later, a long schedule was held in Cape Town as a result of which the film was 90% complete in early 2009. Only a couple of songs were left to be shot in India, post which there was plan for the film’s release in the summer of 2009.
Current state
“That was the earlier plan but then there has been so much rush throughout the second half of 2009″, says Ajay Chandok who has earlier worked with Sanjay Dutt in Nehlle Pe Dehlla, “We decided for a December release for the film but with such a huge flow of movies, we have decided to move to the beginning of 2010. With so much of rush around, where do you park your car? It’s better to come when there is a safe lane for everyone. In fact we have also shot for the pending songs and are already into the post production of the film.”
He also dismisses the theory around the film being shelved. “You say that a film is shelved when it is 20% – 30% – 40% complete but is subsequently halted. In case of Chatur Singh Two Star, we are 100% through with the film’s principal shoot, so where is the question of it being shelved?”
Final verdict: Release in 2010

Film: Lamhaa
Original plan for release: 2009
Producer: Bunty Walia, Jaspreet Singh Walia
Director: Rahul Dholakia
Co-stars: Bipasha Basu, Kunal Kapoor
Flashback
An espionage thriller based on terrorism in Kashmir, Lamhaa had a troubled beginning in its very first schedule (during late 2008) in the state when Bipasha Basu abruptly returned to Mumbai. Later, there were also rumours that Sanjay Dutt wasn’t too happy with the shoot. The producers too were said to be in deep financial trouble due to which Lamhaa wasn’t quite progressing fast. Worse, there was also a situation when the film wasn’t getting the best deal when made available for selling. Result? The film couldn’t quite make it to the 2009 deadline.
Current state
“Well, to disappoint all the detractors of Lamhaa, the film is very much on with the entire principal shooting completed quite some time back. I am almost done with the film’s edit and then we head straight into dubbing”, says Rahul Dholakia who shot to fame with his award winning feature film Parzania, “We decided not to hurry up on the post due to the producers’ v/s multiplex stand off last year. Bunty (Walia) suggested was that we should delay the release and this is we also took it a little easy.”
He refuses to accuse Sanjay Dutt of making unreasonable demands around the alleged change in script. “It’s all stupid and baseless talk”, fumes Rahul, “Sanjay has not even seen the film and he is least interfering. He being unhappy with Lamhaa was a strange controversy that came out of nowhere. We all are quite happy about the film and are now firming up plans for release this year.”
He is sure though that he doesn’t want Lamhaa to come along with multiple films. “A film like this needs a solo slot. Yes, the film hasn’t been sold yet but that’s not because of lack of buyers. Instead, the makers have a definite strategy in mind and they want to make a right choice.”
Final verdict: July 2010 release
——————————————————————————–

Film: Alibaug
Original plan for release: 2007
Producer: White Feather Films
Director: Sanjay Gupta
Co-stars: Rohit Roy, Sophie Choudry, Sanjay Suri
Flashback
Supposed to be a biographic tale, Alibaug started off as a small budget film in 2006. Boasting of an ensemble cast mostly made of TV actors, the film had to face rough weather when cracks started appearing in Sanjay Dutt-Sanjay Gupta relationship. The film’s shooting was kept on hold for some time and there were also frequent change in cast. Though entire 2007 went into speculations around Sanjay Dutt’s presence in the film, in mid-2008 it was formally announced that Irrfan Khan had replaced him.
Current state
Though Irrfan Khan came in as Sanjay Dutt’s replacement, there is still an element of uncertainty around the film. Sanjay Gupta has gone ahead and released another production of his – Acid Factory. His other offbeat productions like Pankh and The Great Indian Butterfly also arrived a couple of weeks back.
Final verdict: Uncertain

The rest
Other than these aforementioned films which had gone on floors and had Sanjay Dutt shooting for them, there are also quite a few other projects that had been green lighted once with him in the lead. However, they are nowhere in the making currently.
- The promo of Munnabhai Chale Amerika was launched with much fanfare close to 3 years back but director Rajkumar Hirani went ahead and completed 3 Idiots instead. It is expected though that the next in the series of Munnabhai will go on floors in 2010
- A film called Unusual Love Story was launched way back in 2006 but nothing is known about it today. Supposed to be directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, who gave Sanjay one of his most memorable roles ever in Vaastav, the film was rumoured to star Anil Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and Celina Jaitly alongside Sanjay Dutt.
- Producer-director Shakeel Noorani, who had last made a film a decade back (Joru Ka Ghulam), had announced Jaan Ki Baazi with Sanjay Dutt, Nauheed Cyrusi, Aashish Vidyarthi and Danny Denzongpa. The film hasn’t gone beyond the announcement stage while Noorani too hasn’t embarked on anything newer.
- Sanjay Dutt had consented to appear in a special appearance in Shyam Benegal directed Chamki Chameli. However, neither has the film moved an inch since its first poster was revealed, nor is there any further indication that Dutt would be working in the film.
- It was way back in April 2008 that a film called 21 Battle of Saragarhi – From Ashes to Glory was announced with Dutt in the lead. Arriving under the banner of Sanjay Dutt Productions and G. S. Entertainment, the film was meant to be directed by Rohit Jugraj (James, Superstar). Not a single shot has been canned for the film so far.
- Sanjay Dutt was supposed to be playing the role of a gang-lord in Bunty Walia’s Gangs of London. The debut directorial effort of Bunty’s brother Jaspreet, the film was meant to go on floors on 2009. However, there hasn’t been much progress since the news first came out in early 2008.
In the pipeline
As of now, there are only two confirmed projects in which Sanjay Dutt would be seen in 2010. While one is Anees Bazmee directed No Problem (where he also has Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Kangna Ranaut and Neetu Chandra for company), another is Mani Shankar directed Knock Out which brings him back with the maker of Rudraksh. He is also said to have consented to do Kaizad Boom Gustaad’s Baba while Vivek Agnihotri too has Sanjay Dutt in mind for epical drama Freedom.

In school, Kunal collected posters of planes to paste on his walls and little plane models with whatever pocket money he got. Adding fuel to his attraction was the pilot who lived in his building. “At that point, the world was not as small as it is now, and there were legendary stories about this pilot travelling the world constantly and visiting different and exciting places. For us, he was a superhero. A big van would come to pick him up and we watched in awe as he emerged from the building in his uniform. Also, the fact that the van had a lot of airhostesses made it even more captivating,” he laughs.
