Madhur Bhandarkar on coming a long way from being a video delivery boy, on testing new genres and believing that Kareena will eventually come around to act in Heroine
• Comedy is not your forte. Why are making one, Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji ?
It was not an easy decision to make. While some have been saying that I shouldn’t get into other genres of cinema, others say that it’s time for a change. I have always considered myself as an experimental filmmaker and this is another one of my experiments. Actors who have worked with me will vouch for my sense of humour. More often than not, I have them in splits on my sets. In fact, Tabu (who starred in Chandni Bar) used to always ask me why I hadn’t directed a comedy yet.
• After dropping out from school you even worked as a delivery boy for a video library. Did you ever think that you’ll get this far?
Honestly, no. God has given me more than I asked for. I guess it has been a mixture of hard work and luck. I think I am God’s blessed child. And I am not going to get carried away.
• Your male-oriented films, Traffic Signal and Jail, don’t do particularly well. Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji too is male-oriented. Are you nervous?
I am nervous. But that happens with me before the release of any of my films. Think of it, isn’t it early days to say that Madhur Bhandarkar makes only good female-oriented films? I don’t jump into making films just for the heck of it. Recently I had offers to remake some top South films but I didn’t see any creativity in that.
Tell me one good reason why shouldn’t I attempt to make a comedy, or say, even a romcom or a thriller, as long as the characters in my film are well fleshed out? Sooner or later, I’ll touch upon all genres.
• Will you cast Neil Nitin Mukesh (Jail) and Kunal Khemu (Traffic Signal), who seem to have lost the plot?
If I have a script for them, why not? I don’t cast actors as per their market status. Didn’t I cast Samir Soni, Arjan Bajwa and Arbaaz Khan in Fashion despite people’s apprehensions? Again if you see, I have three newcomers in Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji : Shruti Haasan, Shazahn Padamsee and Shraddha Das, whose debut films have flopped.
• Perhaps budgetary constraints might have resulted in this benevolence in casting.
Yes, I do make films within a stipulated budget. I never spend too much, I don’t overshoot. My homework is very strong. Even Jail broke even.
• Your next female-oriented film Heroine is stuck. Kareena Kapoor is latkofying you…
Kareena and I have not been in touch. She has been very busy with RA.One and Agent Vinod. But we are going to meet soon.
• She’s ditched you with Page 3 and Fashion as well…
I think Kareena is a remarkable actress with a great screen presence. From the minute I saw her in Refugee, I knew she will go a long way. I think I will be third time lucky. She deserves a lot more from this industry. I believe that Heroine will give that to her, it’s a dream role for any actress.
• What happened to that biopic on Lalit Modi called Commissioner ?
Things didn’t work out. Besides, the Lalit Modi controversy would have been too hot to handle.
• You have always been a ladies’ man. We’re disappointed to not have heard of any link-ups. Have you really changed or are you a smoother operator now?
(Laughs) Today, I am very happy the way I am living my life. Do I really need to answer this question?
• All the more…
Un dino, meri shaadi nahin hui thi. And people just perceived me that way. (laughs again).
Salman Khan dishes out B’wood’s best on the ramp
Prithwish Ganguly | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; October 11, 2010)
Salman Khan’s Being Human show at the HDIL India Couture Week 2010 on Saturday night was a feast for the eyes as the superstar dished out eight oomphy ladies of Tinseltown — including the top three actresses of today, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra — on the runway. Kareena and Priyanka were seen holding hands when they came for the curtain call with Salman and thus managed to dispel the gossip of any sort of animosity. The others to sashay down the ramp were Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji, Bipasha Basu, Karisma Kapur and Sushmita Sen as Salman decoded fashion from 1920s to present times in a grand musical-like choreography.
High on oomph quotient, the show only showcased eight ensembles but the drama — the provocative dancing and the extravagant opulent props, made sure that everybody was dazzled. In Dabangg style Sallu had distributed whistles to everyone giving them virtually the licence to express their excitement when the leading ladies soared temperature on the catwalk.
Preity opened the show strutting in a sexy black dress — a provocateur that certainly made the audiences get going about the 1920s. The embodiment of 30s was the evidently slimmed down Katrina who was greeted by tap dancers and models dressed as the mafia of that era. Rani portrayed the 40s – she glided in with Mughal-e-Azam clip and Pakeezah’s iconic track Chalte Chalte playing at the backdrop. Her nawabi tehzeeb was an instant hit as she bowed in front of the audiences in a vintage Manish Malhotra creation.
Bipasha was the embodiment of the flirty 50s where the world scored high on everything from fashion to physics. The 60s was an age of rock n roll and the coming of age of Indian cinema. From Elvis Presley to the homegrown Shammi Kapoor and the cabaret, India was in a state of transition. Salman picked someone from the Kapoor family to be the face of that era and it was the sassy Karisma who entered the runway on a piano. Sushmita was the face of the 70s, an era of Woodstock, sex, drugs, music and beauty queens. She entered the ramp to
Dum Maro Dum.
Priyanka Chopra was the ‘Material Girl’ of the 80s. As she mouthed Madonna’s cult song and glided on the runway, she made sure that she took people to a big climax that was provided by Kareena – the black magic woman. The naughty 90s theme opened with sexy dancers brandishing their hunters to men models dressed as policemen. Kareena, dressed in all black, teased the photographers to a striptease moment as she took off her hat and played with her coat before seducing men who unbuttoned their shirts and encircled her.
Salman’s entry was dramatic, too. Dressed in an Arjun Khanna creation, Sallu made a dancing entry. The show, choreographed by Aparna and Tanya and styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, ended with all the girls changing costumes to sport a Being Human Tshirt as they walked with Salman in the middle and took a curtain call. Earlier, he launched a line of Being Human watches which are available at 50 stores nationwide. All outfits from the show will be auctioned and the proceeds will go to Being Human which supports education and healthcare. email@example.com

Kareena Kapoor, who was on a music reality show found herself becoming the butt of a mean joke. The anchor grandly announced, “Today we have amongst us a very special guest. A man whose association with Raj Kapoor Saab was very close. A man who has cradled Kareena when she was a toddler, etc. He is a noted technician of yore and today, at the sunset of his life, he leads a lonely life and is in deep financial trouble”. Kareena was misty-eyed when she heard this poignant saga. There was pindrop silence on the sets when a frail man was brought in on a wheelchair. The Golmaal 3 cast agreed that technicians in our country toil hard but their contribution is seldom acknowledged. And a sentimental Bebo walked up to hand over a cheque of Rs eight lakhs to the old man which he accepted with trembling hands. It was a very emotional moment but all hell broke loose the moment Kareena decided to bend down and touch his feet as a gesture of reverence. To everybody’s amusement, the old man sprung up from the wheelchair and broke into a jig. Bebo’s eyes literally popped. The old man removed his wig and makeup and it was none other than actor comedian Vrajesh Hirjee. Kareena’s first words were “Thank God I did not touch his feet.” But the sport that she is, she chuckled loudest knowing the joke was on her. Kareena is sure to remember her stint on this reality show for a long time to come.
The forthcoming season of Karan Johar’s popular TV show may not see Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra together; their relationship is apparently not serious enough
Agreed, this newspaper has given you ample proof that they’re in love but the truth was never a bed of roses. Shahid and Priyanka’s relationship has some serious shades of grey.
While Karan Johar and the broadcaster of Koffee With Karan are hoping Shahid and Priyanka would soon be seen in the forthcoming season of the show, Shahid has other plans. Shooting for the forthcoming season starts at the end of this month. But apparently, Shahid has refused to aprticipate in the show because Priyanka and he are still not in a very serious relationship; they’re dating.
Interestingly, at the time when he was dating Kareena Kapoor, Sasha appeared on the second season of Karan’s show with her. That’s history.
Says a source, “Shahid is still not sure about Priyanka. She is very important and dear to him but he would rather take some more time and make the relationship stronger than appear on national television making statements about it.”
While Priyanka was reportedly coaxing the Moranis to convince Shahid to join their forthcoming world tour (slated for next year), Shahid turned it down. The Moranis hven’t given up on him though.
Moreover, Shahid and Priyanka apparently still have fights very often. Adds the source, “This is another reason why Shahid has opted out of Karan’s show. He is obviously not comfortable being grilled by Karan, who is known for being audacious with his guests and even more so, if they are reportedly in a relationship.”
Another source from the television industry says, “The broadcasters of Koffee With Karan are very hopeful that they would have Shahid and Priyanka together on the show.”
Though Shahid and Priyanka did not revert to us on this, we’re hoping Karan’s charms would do the trick.
Beau Saif had quite an impressive gift for his lady love on her birthday
|Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan|
Her birthday may be over, but Kareena Kapoor is still in celebration mode.
Remember we told you that boyfriend Saif Ali Khan had a big surprise planned for her on her birthday. Well, the surprise is out. It’s definitely big, it glitters and it’s every girls dream come true.
Yes, we’ve heard that the lucky lass is now the proud owner of a massive 10 carat emerald, courtesy her handsome hunk boyfriend, of course.
Incidentally, for his birthday, Kareena had gifted Saif a luxurious holiday in the beautiful locales of Switzerland.
Must say, this is one couple who have mastered the art of pampering each other.
The R&B sensation will record another song for SRK and shoot a music video also featuring Kareena and King Khan
Prithwish Ganguly | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; October 4, 2010)
Shah Rukh Khan will host singing sensation Akon at Mannat in December. The singer will be in town then to record another song for SRK. Akon, who has been bowled over by SRK and also the concept of his film Ra.1, has gelled well with the composers and loves their groovy tracks.
The last time Akon was in town, he became good friends with SRK and Kareena. They had a great session talking about their different cultures and knowing each other. Akon had said that Mumbai gives him the feeling that he is at home having also done a hit show here. He was taken by surprise when Shah Rukh threw a party in his honour in Mumbai and many people turned up. He felt really special working for SRK and he took back this warm feeling with him to the US.
During the London shooting schedule of the movie, SRK and the production team decided that since the movie had someone like Akon, they should showcase him more. They felt doing another song with him would help. SRK approached him and Akon probably tweaked his schedule to accommodate his trip to India.
When contacted, SRK told BT, “Yes Akon is set to do another song for us. We are just working on it to finalise things. December might be the month. We are excited to have him in our film.”

Kareena Kapoor and her father Randhir Kapoor are teaming up for the first time to play reel-life father and daughter in Karan Johar’s next film, Short Term Shaadi. Randhir and his daughters Kareena and Karisma have become really thick recently. His wife, Babita, too is spending quality time with the former actor after his recent health scare brought the couple, who have faced marital trouble in the past, closer together. A source close to the project reveals, “Kareena is really excited. After spending years in the industry, this is the first film that is making her play daughter to her own father. She and her dad gel really well and they are both happy to do a project together. They will rehearse together, too. Randhir, on the other hand, is delighted that he will be spending more quality time with his busy daughter who is neck-deep in work. Babita, too, is looking forward to see her husband work with Kareena. She has been heard saying that she can’t wait to see them in the same frame.”
The entire Kapoor family, including Karisma, is likely to be present on the sets when Kareena and Randhir do their first scene together. It’s going to be one big happy family reunion and an emotional one also for them. The film, reported to be inspired by the Cameron Diaz-Ashton Kutcher starrer What Happens in Vegas, it is not a remake of the Hollywood hit. However, Short Term Shaadi will be shot in Vegas where two people (Imran and Kareena) get married after getting drunk. Though they decide to get divorced as they hate each other, they end up falling in love.
Hollywood make-up artistes favour Bebo
Prithwish Ganguly | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; October 1, 2010)
Kareena Kapoor might edge past Priyanka Chopra to play Indira Gandhi in the much-awaited international biopic Mother: The Indira Gandhi Story. The Hollywood producers had initially thought of approaching Priyanka but it seems the Oscar-winning make-up artistes Jenny Shircore and Greg Connam, working closely on the project, are divided in their opinion. They now see that Bebo can look closer to Indira than Priyanka, who was initially thought to have the perfect shape of face. The balance, as of now, has definitely tilted towards
A source working on the project reveals. “Veteran Hollywood script-writer Krishna Shah, who has also made films for Bollywood like Shalimar, has gone to solve the mystery of which actress can look like Indira to play her on screen. While Shircore — who won the Academy for her work in Elizabeth, had felt that Priyanka is the only actress, Connam — who has worked on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, has now started to think that Kareena is more perfect. As of now, the two are seriously looking over Kareena’s features for a near match before they approach her.” Krishna told BT, “Casting is 80 per cent of directing. In a biopic, it is 90 per cent of directing. Can you imagine Gandhi without Ben Kingsley or Nixon without Anthony Hopkins or Patton without George C. Scott? Indira’s film provides incredible scope for the make-up artistes.” On what they love about Kareena, who may have to go through three hours of prosthetics like Amitabh Bachchan in Paa and Shah Rukh Khan in Ra.1, Krishna adds, “She has a strong jaw and deep eyes and the time for make-up will not be taxing. Indira at 20 will take about an hour. She at 50, about two hours; and she at 67, three hours because of the advancement in the art of makeup.”
Kareena Kapoor is pretty excited about her next release Golmaal 3. In Golmaal Returns, she was called Ekta and played the role of a daily soap housewife gone dotty.
Incidentally Tusshar Kapoor played her brother in the second version of the film. Now Kareena will be called Daboo in Golmaal 3.
Incidentally, Daboo is the pet name of Kareena’s father, Randhir Kapoor, in real life. Kareena insisted that her name should be Daboo in the film for emotional reasons.
When contacted, Kareena Kapoor confirmed the news and said, “Yes, it’s funny yet emotional for me. Daboo is the name of my character. She is a total chavanni chaap and Daboo being a fun name, it’s perfect.
I am thrilled as it’s my darling papa’s name and I hope it proves lucky for me. I am sure it will.”
We hope so too!
I’m sexy in the naach-gaana routine, says Kareena
Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; September 30, 2010)
Kareena Kapoor is the only female lead in Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal-3 (if you don’t count Ratna Pathak, that is), and buzz is that Bebo had laid down this condition before coming on board the male-dominated comic flick. The flip side to this is that she will be the only one providing the oomph factor to the otherwise arid landscape. And though her character is of a girl who has verbal diarrohea (like a Sholay ki Basanti), the title track of the film has her trademark sizzle. Kareena does a shimmy and shake in harem pants, ganji, and with a lot of bangles that would have the Waka-Waka Colombian sex bomb Shakira reconsider her moves. The actress told BT, “Rohit Shetty has a way of making his title tracks truly interesting. For Golmaal Returns, I turned Cat Woman a la Halle Berry style. The Meoow number that I did went on to become a chartbuster. When it came to G-3, Rohit once again wanted me to be sensuous. He said, ‘Bebo, drop all your defences and let’s do a sexy track.’” The actress was more than willing. “My audience expects me to be sexy and sizzling at least in the naach-gaana routine. So I’ve gone ahead and done hip-shaking, that is a cross between Shakira’s Waka-Waka and Hips Don’t Lie. The choreographer Ganesh Acharya added our Bollywood moves to the track but there’s just this extra hip swing that I think is very hot,” she said. firstname.lastname@example.org
