Bollywood constantly fetes itself for its films. Now, there are a few jeers among the untiring cheers

Sharmila Ganesan Ram | TNN (THE TIMES OF INDIA; March 18, 2012)

In the film Rockstar, Ranbir Kapoor’s character wants to experience pain so badly that he volunteers to fall in love and deliberately has his heart broken. “He could simply have watched Bodyguard instead,” offered an aspiring standup act at a comedy club in Lower Parel not too long ago. Yesterday, the same venue hosted an awards show where Bodyguard received four nominations. Oddly though, this didn’t kill the comic’s jibe but only made it better.

The Ghanta Awards was the kind of event where most of the nominees did an Aamir Khan. Who would want to attend a function that rewards their mistakes after all? Out of all the nominees, only Sonam Kapoor who was nominated in the ‘Worst Couple’ category (along with Mausam co-star Shahid Kapoor) attended the show while Anurag Kashyap had tweeted saying he would happily collect the award if his film That Girl In Yellow Boots, which had been nominated in the Worst ‘Holier Than Thou’ category, won. This category, refers to ‘parallel’ films that are allegedly inspired by the grammar of world cinema but often end up being as rotten as their Bollywood counterparts. But despite some worthwhile nominees, the award surprisingly went to Dhobi Ghat.

Sheila Ki Jawani, now a C-grade film!

Bharti Dubey (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 13, 2010)

Kanti Shah, who is known as the king of C-grade films in Bollywood, has an interesting one up his sleeve this time. Instead of using double entendres, Shah has used Katrina Kaif’s current sizzling chartbuster Sheila Ki Jawani as the title of his film.

The announcement on Shah’s film was used as an advertisement in a trade magazine recently. Kumar Mohan, the editor of the magazine, recalls, “When Kanti Shah came to me with the advertisement I laughed and told him that I knew he was capable of making the most of such ideas. These films are made on a shoestring budget of around Rs 25 lakh.”

Shah admits, “The day the song became a hit I decided to make the film. I finished shooting within 12 days.”

Shah insists his film is original and says, “I have only borrowed the first line of the song.” But interestingly, Shah’s wife Sapna, the protagonist in his film, plays a small-time heroine, much like Katrina, in the film.

Despite the grey areas, Shah wants to time the release of his film with Tees Maar Khan. He says, “I am working towards releasing the film on December 24. If I miss that I will surely release it in January 2011.” Are you fine with that Farah?

To promote Udaan, producer Anurag Kashyap screens a semi-porn film Angoor for teens at his office

Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 14, 2010)

Anurag Kashyap is putting his social networking skills to good use. He recently organised the screening of a semi-porn film by Kanti Shah called Angoor, for teenagers at his office.

This C-grade film plays a pivotal role in Anurag’s film Udaan; it changes the lead character Rohan’s (Rajat Barmecha) life forever. When Anurag announced this screening on a social networking site, surprisingly, over 200 teenagers expressed interest in it.

Our source said, “Rajat’s character in the film, Rohan gets caught by his teacher and gets expelled from school, when he is watching Angoor. He faces a lot of turmoil after this.

Anurag Kashyap

Since it is an important scene in the film, producer Anurag Kashyap decided to highlight it by arranging for a special screening of Angoor for teenagers, with Rajat Barmecha and the director of Udaan, Vikramaditya Motwane present.

Since Angoor is not available on the Internet, a special screening was organised and since most of the kids were under the age of 18, the screening was more of an underground one at Anurag’s office. Around 50 teenagers turned up to watch it.”

When contacted, Shikha Kapoor, Senior VP, Marketing, UTV Motion Pictures said, “I think this is the base where the movie starts and we thought it was a nice marketing idea. Surprisingly there were many More >

Kanti Shah announces Rape, a film inspired by Shiney Ahuja's case

3

By Satish Sundaresan, June 22, 2009 – 18:07 IST It’s said that ‘Reel life always imitates real life’. If you are one of those who disagree with this, we are sure that filmmaker Kanti Shah will change your belief. For starters, Kanti Shah is the ‘almost King’ of C-grade films. Testimonials to his filmmaking reflect in his ‘creative’ titles like Free Entry, Duplicate Sholay, Kabhi Kranti Kabhi Jung (‘K3J’), Marna Zaroori Hai and the last released Lage Raho Partner.

The goods news for all his fans is that this man is back and how! He has announced a very ‘topical’ film called Rape. Yes, you heard the name right. Going by the ‘USP’ of this filmmaker, we are sure that the ‘topicality’ of this film has anything and everything related to the recent rape controversy surrounding Shiney Ahuja. When Bollywood Hungama spoke to Kanti regarding Rape, he was initially reluctant to ‘reveal’ anything about the plot reasoning that it was a very tight-bound script and has been strictly kept under the wraps. It took a little probing from our end to get the following ‘revelation’ from Kanti. He said “Yes, my latest film Rape has been heavily inspired by the Shiney Ahuja case. While the hero’s name is Imran, the heroine is Sapna and both are newcomers. Mark my words; they are definitely the faces to watch out for! My film has got 5 songs in all with its lilting music composed by the very talented Sameer Sen (of Dilip Sen – Sameer Sen). Of these 5 songs, two are super duper item numbers!”
