In a candid chat, Akshay talks about why he always “plays” with Vipul Shah and why he doesn’t have a darbar of chamchas recommending scripts
Action Replayy is your fifth film with Vipul Shah. What makes you tie up with him so regularly?
We both believe in making commercial cinema which is commercial yet sensible. That’s why I enjoy working with him, whether he is directing or producing.
People are beginning to say that it’s high time you look at different films and stop doing comedies.
I would like you to go back and see at all the successful films in the last five years. Most of the films that have worked at the box-office are comedy films and the percentage ration is 92% which is very high. Take any recent film for example be it 3 Idiots or even Dabangg, it had heavy does of comedy in it.
I think people have had enough of depression in their life. Everyone, especially people who are paying 200 to 300 Rs of money to watch a film, want entertainment. There should be comedy with a sensible storyline and good music and it will work and that’s what I am doing.
Have you totally stopped even trying to pretend to do ‘serious’ roles?
I did try with 8 X 10 Tasveer, but hardly anyone came to see the film. So now I play a commercial hero and try to rediscover myself in that genre. But here again I want to say that 8 X 10 Tasveer was one of my best efforts and I am and will always be proud of that film.
Since the last three years you’ve produced quite a few films.
Yes, I am enjoying my role as a producer. I have made about seven films and I can say that I am a hands-on producer. I look into every department of the film. Barring my Hollywood film, I have worked hands-on in all the other productions, so that I can be present to see what’s happening around me.
You are the original action hero. But now that action films are working, you don’t have even one action film on the floors?
I am starting one next year and I will announce it soon.
Joker will now be made in 3D. What do you think about it?
I have a great technician in the form of Shrish Kunder and I know that if there is anyone who can make a 3D film, it’s him; he is technically very sound. I am excited about making Joker.
You are probably the only actor who works with directors despite their flops. Shirish Kunder, Nikhil Advani. Why?
It is not an emotional thing as one would like to believe. I must say that Nikhil has come up with a mind-blowing script in the form of Patiala House and it is definitely one of my favorite scripts. Similarly for Shirish. I go by the script and the role. Hits and flops are a part of everyone’s career and I don’t judge anyone on those grounds. I don’t have chamchas around me suggesting flicks. I listen to everyone but at the end of the day I take my own decisions.
You were the highest paid actor till recently.
Yes, and now I am the lowest paid star. I have demolished the term, ‘actors’ remuneration’.
Firoz Nadiadwala is making Hera Pheri 3. However you are not a part of it?
I don’t want to do the same things over and over again. (Smiles)
Apparently, the success of James Cameron’s Avatar inspired Shirish Kunder, the director
There is a lot on Shirish Kunder’s plate all of a sudden.
Not only is he directing the Hindi remake of south super hit Kick with Salman Khan, he has also decided to turn his Joker into a 3D flick. Apparently, James Cameron’s Avatar inspired Kunder to make his film in 3D.
Our source informs, “Joker will be a big budgeted film in 3D. For the first time a top star like Akshay Kumar will be working in a 3D film. After the success of Avatar, Shirish saw ample of scope to play with visuals in Joker.
That’s why he decided to make the film in 3D. When Kunder suggested this to Akshay, he also loved it and they started working on the pre-production of the film.”
Apparently, there is another reason why Kunder is so excited about Joker; its script was the first one Kunder had ever written. In fact, he wanted to make the film even before Jaan-E-Mann but it didn’t work out.
So he attempted at making it after the release of Jaan-E-Mann but even that failed. Only when Akshay signed the film did things start falling into place.”
When contacted, Kunder confirmed the news but refused to divulge any information about it, “Yes, we are making Joker in 3D and work is in progress.
The film goes on floors in January and it is too early to give out any details.” It’s almost November, Shirish!
Shirish Kunder is in advanced talks with the actress for the heroine’s role in Joker. It’s clear that Farah is on good terms with her
That Farah Khan’s hubby Shirish Kunder may have finally cast a heroine for his next Joker is interesting. But what’s even better is that it’s going to be Deepika Padukone. So, if all goes well, Akshay Kumar will be seen romancing Deepika Padukone in Joker. Clearly, Deepika and Farah have mended their differences.
It may be recalled that soon after Deepika’s debut release Om Shanti Om, the actress did not bother to keep in touch with the woman who gave her the first big break in Bollywood, Farah Khan.
After the success of her debut film, Deepika moved on with her newfound fame. She started getting projects with big banners and got so busy working on each of them that she was not left with any time to keep in touch with Farah. This had upset Farah tremendously.
But now the two have buried the hatchet.
A source close to Joker revealed, “Deepika and Shirish are in advanced talks. She is the prime contender to fill the heroine’s slot in the film.”
Apparently, on reading the script of the film, Deepika loved the character she is supposed to play. The source added, “Deepika is very excited to be backing Farah Khan’s fold. After all, it was Farah who gave her her first super hit film Om Shanti Om.”
On being asked about signing Deepika, Shirish was a bit evasive. He said, “We are currently in the process of casting the main lead opposite Akshay for Joker. Certain top names are being considered. It is a performance-oriented role. Akshay and I will take the final call in a week.”
Farah however, chose to clarify the matter. She said, “Jo bhi hua tha, it got sorted out long ago. She came for Eid to my place recently and also on my show.”
Though Deepika remained unavailable for comment, here’s a tip she may want to use: gratitude is great attitude.
Shirish Kunder and Vikram Tulli, director of Rajeev Khandelwal’s next, are fighting over a ‘joker’
The makers of Rajeev Khandelwal’s next Main Joker have locked horns with Shirish Kunder over the title Joker. AMPTPP (Association of Motion Pictures and TV Program Producers) sent a notice to the producer of Main Joker and asked them to change the title saying it belongs to Shirish Kunder. They have barred the producers from using the word Joker anywhere in the title. Vikram Tulli who is debuting as a director with this film is livid.
Vikram says, “I had been working on the script of my film (Main Joker) for 5 years. At that that time the title was with Venus. I tried to get in touch with them. My brother’s company had applied for the title Joker. As per rule if you register a title and don’t make the film in two years the title goes to the next applicant. So technically the title should have come to me but it was given to Shirish Kunder.”
Quite disappointed by the governing body he adds, “When I asked AMPTPP how they can they give the title to Shirish when I am the next applicant they had no answer.”
He accuses, “Everyone is scared of the bigwigs and are playing into their hands. Joker was with Venus for five years and they gave it to Shirish because he is Farah Khan’s husband and Farah Khan is SRK’s friend. But no issues, I will still make a better film than him and I don’t need an Akshay Kumar.”
The director further states, “The joker leitmotif is a pivotal part of the film. The whole story revolves around this word. So we asked them to let us use Main Joker or J For Joker. IMPPA (Indian Motion Pictures’ Producers’ Association) approved it but AMPTPP objected to that also.
When Karan (Johar) wanted to make Khan he didn’t get it but he made My Name Is Khan. He was allowed this but I am not allowed to even use J For Joker.”
The director, who has started hunting for a new title, signs off, saying, “Whether it’s a ‘Joker’ or no ‘Joker’, if I make a good film it will work.”
Shirish, on the other hand, has a different story to tell. He says, “I started work on Joker in 2007 and the title perfectly suited my film. At that time Shah Rukh Khan was set to do the film (Akshay Kumar is playing the lead now). The title belonged to Ratan Jain of Venus and Vashu Bhagnani, who had also registered for the title, was next in line. I approached both the producers and they were kind enough to give me the title.”
He adds, “I approached AMPTPP and IMPPPA with the official letters and these organisations have looked into the matter and have told the producer not to misuse the title. But still they have been going on using the word ‘joker’.”
The furious directors argues, “My film has been in news since 2007 and everyone knew it’s titled Joker. A big film takes its time to come together. In the interim, if some small film decides to usurp the same title it is not fair. It’s a cheap publicity tactic for the other film. I cannot make Main Avatar before James Cameron makes Avatar.”
After the Jaan-e-Maan debacle in 2006, Shirish Kunder will finally direct Joker, his ambitious next
Finally Shirish Kunder is all set to make his ambitious project Joker early next year. The project which Shirish wanted to make immediately after Jaan-e-Mann could not take off for various reasons.
Considering that it was the project closest to Shirish’s heart he tried making it for the last four years. However now finally things have now fallen into place and the film will start in January 2011 with Akshay Kumar playing the lead role.
Our source said, “Joker is a script which is very dear to Shirish. In fact he had planned to make it much before he made his debut with Jaan-e-Mann in 2006. However after the not-so-encouraging response to his debut film, things didn’t go as planned for Shirish. He had written the script of Joker in 2003 and it’s a film with the Joker as the superhero and has a heavy dose of special effects and stunts.
After things didn’t work out between Akshay Kumar and Shirish Kunder four years ago, Shirish planned the film with Salman Khan. However the talks didn’t materialise then. There were also reports that John Abraham had signed the film.
But Shirish kept mum and was quietly working on his project. In between Shirish was also supposed to make a film for Ashtavinayak Cine Vision and SRK; both projects never saw the light of day.
Finally he surprised everyone when he announced Tees Maar Khan as a producer with wife Farah Khan directing and Akshay Kumar being signed as the lead actor.
Now Shirish has tied hands with a corporate house and Akshay Kumar will also co-produce the film. The film will go on the floors in January next year.”
When contacted Shirish Kunder said, “All I can say is that proper announcements with all details will be made jointly with all the parties concerned.”

The late Heath Ledger immortalised the character of ‘The Joker’ in the Hollywood blockbuster The Dark Knight and now closer home Rajeev Khandelwal is all set to play the lead role in a film called Joker.
Directed by Vikram Tuli (cousin of actor Kumar Gaurav), Joker has Rajeev paired opposite Prachi Desai who made her debut couple of years ago with Rock On. The film is an emotional story of a father and son with actor Shrey Bawa playing Rajeev’s on-screen son.
We came across a few interesting pics of the cast and crew shooting for the film on our user forums. The unit has been shooting in New Zealand and the hilly areas of North India.
While the father-son bonding forms the crux of the story, it would be interesting to see the kind of chemistry that Rajeev and Prachi share in the film. After all they both were reigning superstars of the small screen once upon a time and not to forget are both Ekta Kapoor’s proteges.
Television stars turned Bollywood actors Rajeev Khandelwal and Prachi Desai will be seen together in Vikram Tuli’s debut film Joker. The lead couple recently shot a song choreographed by veteran choreographer Saroj Khan.
A source from the film reveals that Saroj Khan designed a few dance moves which the lead couple got very uncomfortable with.” The source elaborates, “Saroji gave them dhak dhak moves a la Madhuri Dixit. Rajeev and Prachi found the pelvic thrusts quite cheesy and refused to do them. Even the director thought a few steps looked vulgar and old fashioned and requested Saroj Khan to alter them. After a little argument, Saroj Khan came up with some new dance moves.”

Rajeev Khandelwal, who will be doing a song for the first time on screen and is determined to overcome his fear of dancing, confirms, “Yes, I was a little uncomfortable but there wasn’t any argument. You cannot disrespect a veteran like Sarojji but we were finding it a little funny, especially me, to do some dance moves. This is the first time I am dancing on screen. It’s not a dance song per se and there were a few moves which we don’t see nowadays. When Sarojji does it, they look very graceful, but when you copy those steps you look a complete fool. So it took me some time to get used to those moves.” Rajeev is gearing up for another full-fledged dance number in the movie which will be choreographed by Longinus Fernandes.
Prachi Desai, who won Jhalak Dikhla Jaa season 2 and was judged by none other than Saroj Khan says, “We knew that Sarojji was trying to recreate the magic of Madhuri and Sridevi’s popular numbers in this song.
She told me to get into the mould of one of Sridevi’s most popular songs, Kaate nahin kat-tey from Mr India. I’m even wearing blue and white chiffon saris in the song. I had a ball, but it was uncomfortable for Rajeev. In one shot, he had to lift me and turn around. There was a lot of wind and the ground was uneven, so he couldn’t keep his balance.”
Saroj Khan quips, “There is no dance in that song, so where is the question of getting uncomfortable?”

With the director Sourabh Narang of Rajeev Khandelwal’s next project falling seriously ill, the actor has now gone to another project entitled Joker which starts shooting on 20th January. To be directed by Kumar Gaurav’s cousin Vikram Tuli, the film, the story of a father and his young son was earlier supposed to be made with Javed Jafrey in the lead. Sportingly Rajeev admits the role was earlier offered to Javed. “Joker has gone through many changes. I’m aware Javed Jafrey was offered the role.”
Earlier when Javed was doing it, the son was to be 7-year old. With Rajeev in the cast the son’s age is now 4.
The film to be shot at a stretch from 20th January to 20th February in New Zealand will star Rajeev with Prachi Desai playing his leading lady. Rajeev begins this film in lieu of Sourabh Narang’s Return Gift which has now got indefinitely postponed until the director recovers.
There’s just one hitch. The title Joker belongs to Shirish Kunder who is all set to start a film by that name. The makers of the Khandelwal film were hoping to get the title from Shirish. But with Shirish apparently ready to make a film of that title, Rajeev says their project will have to seek another title.
“We don’t know what to call it because Joker was the most suitable title,” Rajeev says helplessly, hoping for the ailing director of Return Gift to recover shortly. “Sourabh was about to start his film when this happened. We’re all waiting for him to be well enough to start the film.”
Recently, Shirish Kunder announced the three films that he and his wife Farah Khan were working on. Tees Mar Khan with Akshay Kumar and Alien Sahib with John Abraham are two .Joker is the third one that the couple will make. The script of the film was written with Shah Rukh Khan in mind.
But since he refused to do the film, Shirish has now offered the role to his new good friend John Abraham, who also stars in Alien Sahib.
A source close to Shirish said, “Joker is very close to Shirish. He spoke to John about it a few days ago. John loved the role and has given his consent to do the film. The film requires immense pre-production work, which is in process now.” The film will have lots of special effects and will be a visual delight.
There will be two leading ladies opposite John in Joker. “One of them will play a positive role, while the other will be a grey character. And both of them fall for John. So, it is a love triangle,” our source added.
Shah Rukh was also to produce the film but things didn’t work out. The film will now be produced by Shirish and Farah’s banner, Three’s Company.
John Abraham will not only star in but also co-produce Shirish Kunder’s directorial venture Alien Sahib. John will go back to his lean physique in the film, which will be simultaneously released in 3D and 2D formats
Shirish Kunder’s second directorial venture (after Jaan-E-Mann) is fast getting ready to go on the floors. Incidentally, John Abraham will not only star in the film but also co-produce it with Shirish
Another surprise is the title of the film. While Shirish had registered a host of titles Animals, Banjo Party, Bachelor of Love, Joker, Muscle Power, Son of a Gun, Technicolor and Triple Cross, the title of this film is not going to be any of the abovementioned names. John and Shirish have come up with an altogether new title, Alien Sahib. A source says, “It is not John who plays an alien in the film. Like Rakesh Roshan did something in Koi Mil Gaya that resulted in an alien being introduced in the film, here too John does something that brings an alien into the story. But, Alien Sahib will not be a sci-fi film.”
John will start prepping up for Alien Sahib after he completes Nishikant Kamat’s action film. Viewers will get to see John’s new lean physique in Alien Sahib. In fact, he will be as lean as he was in his debut film Jism. “John has a bulky body in Nishikant’s film but he will have to shed several pounds before he faces the camera for Alien Sahib. He will have to lose at least 8 kgs,” adds the source.
Although Alien Sahib will be a 3D film, it will simultaneously release as a 2D film in theatres.
Commenting on the film, John says, “Alien Sahib is a simple, endearing story with beautiful emotions. I am really excited about it because it has a beautiful story. Human stories always strike a chord.”
When asked what made John and him think of co-producing the film, Shirish says, “John and I have been in talks for more than a year to do this film but John had other commitments. He and I are quite similar in nature. We realised that we were on the same page so it would be better if both of us are involved in the making of the film.”
Giving more details about Alien Sahib, Shirish says, “We will be getting foreign technicians for this film. Lately, John and I have been talking to quite a few them. Moreover, we will be using a fusion digital 3D camera, a technique which has been used in James Cameron’s Avatar.”
The filmmaker and actor signed the contract on December 9, which was Shirish and Farah’s fifth wedding anniversary. The lead actress for Alien Sahib is yet to be finalised.
