Excited? In fact I was really-really excited when I got a thought of doing a feature on the 40 years journey of Amitabh Bachchan as he turns 68 on 11th October. ‘Wow’, I said to myself, ‘For anyone, it is a lifetime opportunity to be doing something truly substantial on the professional life of an actor who doesn’t have any parallel in the industry for last 40 years’.
And just as it would happened to those dozens of actors who would have jumped with joy when given an opportunity to share centre stage with Amitabh Bachchan, I too found myself pretty much frozen. Pen down the film journey? That too of someone like Amitabh Bachchan? THE Amitabh Bachchan?
Nervous? Puzzled? Confused? Worried? – No, I thought for long but I wasn’t feeling any one of these emotions. Also, it wasn’t even the sum of all of these. And now I know why actors just go ahead and make a sweet and simple statement when asked to comment on their working with Amitabh Bachchan – ‘Oh, I was so excited yet nervous about working with Mr. Bachchan. But then he assured me enough so that I could deliver my best.’
Wish he was there with me as well to assure me when I started penning down this feature. After all the fact remains that books have been written on the life and the times of Amitabh Bachchan. He has been a subject for many a thesis writer. And now it was my turn to do something substantial for audience to know about how the living legend has grown with every passing decade and reaffirmed his place in the industry.
Of course there are dozens of anecdotes to be shared. But then hasn’t everything, just about everything about him, already been well documented, preserved and savoured? If we have been reading the dozen odd major books that have been written on him, we know about majority of these anecdotes. ‘So what’s new’, I said to myself. When you have a subject like Amitabh Bachchan, one is bound to end up wearing a fan’s hat as well and end up going on a few tangents as well.
This is where Google came in handy. I thought, let me browse through the wide world of web and figure out something that I was myself perhaps unaware of. And this is how I came across a startling fact. A fact that in addition to dozen odd guest/special appearances that he has done for known films like Kunwara Baap, Choti Si Baat, Guddi, Chala Murari Hero Banane, Golmaal, Chashme Baddoor, Professar Ki Padosan, Soorma Bhopali, Agni Vasrha, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and many more, there are quite a few more that have went totally unnoticed.
In fact some of the guest appearances belong to the kind that even went un-credited. Unfortunately, DVDs of most of the films are not available on stands that could have aided in cross checking the validity of the information I gathered. Perhaps the man himself would be able to shed light on whether the snippets below belonging to ‘Did you know’ category really existed and then lost in the pages of history? Is this all true or perhaps just folk fare?
Let’s browse through them and await more inputs from film historians or the man on the Big Seat – Big B!
- Before Akshay Kumar and John Abraham, it was Amitabh Bachchan who had acted in Garam Masala. No, not under the baton of Priyadarshan but a director called Aspi Irani. The film was released in 1972 and Amitabh Bachchan had played the role of Robert Taylor in it. To think about it, this was a film where he was un-credited.
- He had also done a guest appearance in a film called Jaban (1972) which was a zero star cast affair. This time around there was some relief for Bachchan though since he also had Dharmendra and Shatrughan Sinha for company, all of whom were billed as special appearance.
- To add to the trivia, there was also a film titled Bada Kabootar (1973) which was directed by Deven Verma and had featured the actor in a guest appearance.
- Many years down the line, he made a special appearance as a ‘Qawalli’ singer in Charandas (1977).
- It wasn’t as if he went un-credited or made minor appearances only during his initial struggle period in Bollywood. Even when he had managed superstar status for himself, he was ever so willing to help out friends in need. This is why he was willing to go un-credited for his role of a Punjabi truck driver in Amjad Khan starrer Commander (1981).
- In the same year (1981), he also made a special appearance for Mehar Mittal starrer Walayati Babu.
- A few years down the line, he also played a minor role in Sujit Kumar’s Paan Khaye Saiyan Hamaar (1984), a film which is hardly remembered by any today.
- Last but certainly not the least, there was a film called Bombay Talkie (1970) where he played the role of a mourner in a funeral? Well, if this is not a bad news by itself, here is some more. His scene from the film was deleted and hence he remained un-credited. Shocked? Well, I too was!
The Bollywood hunk is a phone call away, dial 9892155509 and pour your heart out to him
Mark Manuel | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; October 4, 2010)
Goodnight Munnabhai, hello John Abraham. What Sanjay Dutt did on screen, John Abraham has decided to do in real life. That is, answer people’s calls and talk to them. And every night from 10 pm for close to two weeks. Seriously, we’re not joking! BT has learned that this is not just a service the kindhearted hunk is suddenly offering his legion of teenage fans through which they may gush their love for him; it is also an experimental helpline of sorts to anyone who imagines they have a life-threatening problem that perhaps John can help them benchpress their way out of. Actually, he’s been doing this sort of thing quietly for eight years. His first cell number still remains with John. And he gets upto 400 text messages and between 1,500 and 4,000 calls on that daily from fans around the world. “As far as is possible, I reply to and answer all of them between 2 and 4 am every morning. Before social networking came in, this was my way of remaining in touch with the world,” said John.
He is, you must know, a great counsellor, having taken several nasty and cruel knocks on the chin himself during his meteoric rise in Bollywood to still remain standing. And his take on life, the way he puts it across, is simple, honest and straight from the heart. People see through his muscularity, John had once said, they are not scared to come up to him and talk, or check out his biceps and abs! But those are die-hard and crazy John Abraham fans. They want to see him from upfront and close. Now, the actor is willing to be as close and personal with anyone who wants to know anything — from the secrets to his amazing body, his workout and diet details, to how he deals with failure, criticism and defeat in love, films and life, how he manages to still be a Mama’s Boy despite being the darling of millions of women… anything!
“I’m not an educated counsellor to give legitimate advice,” John admitted, “but what I can do in my capacity, I would love to do.” Incidentally, he got the idea of offering his services as an advocate for the soul from his October 15 release — Jhootha Hi Sahi, in which he plays a bookseller who uses layman’s tools to tell people in distress that life is worth living — and no matter how bad it may seem at night, it gets better in the morning if you talk it out with someone. “I’ve learned that problems in relationships must be dealt with,” John said, “because a relationship is a 24-hour, full-time job, and when something goes wrong… then life becomes painful. But when you talk to someone, you share your problems with them, and if that someone is a stranger… then it’s more special. I want to be that someone to anyone out there who needs me.”
That’s that… And we are sharing his number with you — it’s 9892155509. Are you lonesome tonight? ‘Coz John Abraham will take calls from 10 pm tonight and every night upto the release of Jhootha Hi Sahi. That’s heart-talk time. Then it’s back to showtime for the actor.
In a saucy, hatke interview, Salman Khan unleashes his hilarious, wicked side
I keep an early alarm to wake up on time so that I can interview Chulbul Pandey aka Salman Khan. Zipping past the mad traffic to make it on time, I enter Mehboob Studio. Luckily the star hasn’t arrived. I wait for a few minutes and Sallu arrives with his entourage. The actor has his table-chair set outside his vanity van, where we sit under the hot sun discussing his new avatar as host on Bigg Boss 4. Excerpts from a fun rendezvous:
• If given an opportunity, would you go inside the Bigg Boss house and be locked up with the contestants with no connection with the outside world?
As long as there are no cameras inside, yes, I will.
• For how long can you remain disconnected from the outside world?
Let me see now.
• But will you experiment and go inside?
I have been in more difficult situations than the contestants of Bigg Boss can ever be in! And I have handled them pretty well I guess…So I don’t think it will be that much of a problem. It will be a party place for me. I like people, good people, great people.
• Who would be the first person you would make a call to apart from your parents after getting out?
(Thinks) Apart form my parents, I would call Ashvini (programming head of the channel) and ask her what to do next.
• The contestants discuss everything under the sun about their personal lives. Do you find it right?
That’s good na. It’s entertaining.
• Would you discuss your personal relationships in the house, seen and heard by everyone?
You guys discuss my personal life without even knowing it. That is what I find very amusing. So I don’t even react to it and nobody else also reacts to it. And now the fans have also stopped reacting to it. Now I am on Twitter ya, so whenever something comes up, they immediately tweet.
• Tell me five actors you would like to see in the Bigg Boss house together?
I would like Sanju to be here (Sanjay Dutt), Govinda, myself, Jackie (Jackie Shroff), Akki (Akshay Kumar). We all will have a blast.
• Five actresses?
Five names you choose. All are good.
• Five directors?
All the directors should remain outside and keep directing
• If you were locked in the house with Vivek Oberoi, John Abraham, Shah Rukh Khan, who would you eliminate?
Do I have to answer this question?
I have to? What if I don’t, then?
• You just have to say one person’s name!
I would eliminate myself.
• And if you are not in the house with them, who would you choose to eliminate?
(Loudly) If I am not in the house, I am not the Bigg Boss, then I don’t have the right to eliminate anybody. They can be in as longgg as they want.
• If you had Sangeeta Bijlani, Somy Ali and Aishwarya Rai in the house, who would you eliminate?
I would keep them all.
• You wouldn’t eliminate anyone?
(Long pause) I really really like Sangeeta and Somy. They are my friends.
• Which actresses, if inside, will have cat fights according to you?
I think the actresses nowadays are pretty chilled out. Because I have worked with most of them. They all get along. The way the heroes get along, the actresses get along.
• You mean actresses only get along on screen?
No, off screen also. Nobody is into each other’s work. They are all in their spaces.
• Every contestant is given a household duty to do? What duty would you take up?
I would take the duty of cooking.
• If given a chance, what would you cook?
Nothing! I’ll make such bad food for everybody that they will run away from my food.
• What is the hatke lingo you plan to use on this show?
I would use a lot of beep wali gaalis.
• Among the Hollywood celebrities, which star would you like to see as an inmate inside and why?
I have no idea. I don’t know anybody in Hollywood. I know my friends from here. This industry is Hollywood for me.
• Aren’t you disturbed that controversy never seems to leave you?
Doesn’t that disturb you guys?
• No, it doesn’t disturb us.
No? Then why should it disturb me?
• Why do people see you in a film and want to copy your style?
You are seeing what I am wearing (points out to his clothes). It is very easily affordable. Jeans, t-shirt, ek joota hai and my bracelet, kabse pehen raha hoon.
• Do you have any regrets from the past?
No, not at all.

Abbas Tyrewala’s second film Jhootha Hi Sahi has not even released as yet and the director is already preparing to start his next film titled Jaane Kya Tune Kahi. The film would be Abbas’ third directorial venture thereby completing what he calls his romance trilogy.
While Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na was a romance between college friends, Jhootha Hi Sahi is a love story among friends, who are just into their first jobs. His third film of this romantic series Jaane Kya Tune Kahi will be a more matured love story.
As for the casting, Abbas has managed a coup of sorts for his third film, for he has Imran Khan and Genelia D’Souza (his stars from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na) and John Abraham (his actor from Jhootha Hi Sahi) for Jaane Kya Tune Kahi.
Abbas has already started scripting for the film, and the pre-production of the film is already rolling. Abbas seems to have an affinity to romantic films set amongst a gang of friends. Incidentally, the titles of all his 3 films have been popular songs of the yesteryears.

Her beau John Abraham has been associated with the Mumbai Marathon for many years and now it’s Bipasha Basu who would be seen as the face of the Delhi Half Marathon.
Bipasha who was present recently at an event announcing this association tweeted about the same, “Very xcited abt being d Face of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon.21st of nov is Race day, register nw!”
Well, given the fitness freak that she is, Bips is surely the most apt choice to represent this event.
Abbas Tyrewala says he didn’t want the John Abraham of Dostana in his film
Prithwish Ganguly | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; September 25, 2010)
Abbas Tyrewala’s Jhootha Hi Sahi has something common with his debut blockbuster Jaane Tu … Ya Jaane Na — both films are based on ‘gang dynamics’. While the latter is about friends and their interpersonal relationships just after they pass out of college and are into their first jobs, the former was all about friends in college.
Ask him if he is drawn to such themes naturally and Abbas who makes simple films – comprising real people, real locations and real situations, says, “Sometimes you are good at something that you don’t like very much. Because Jaane Tu.. did so well, the desire and expectation of my partners to make another film on those lines was high. Pakhi (his wife) had worked on this script for one-and-a-half years and everyone loved it. My kind of film is Godfather, and the Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino cinema. After this I will do something else for sure.”
Saregama’s Jhootha Hi Sahi, produced by Apurv Nagpal along with Madhu Mantena that releases on October 15, also boasts of an eclectic mix of Asian friends staying in London — a scenario that is again very true and real to the city. The film also has another big USP in John Abraham’s geeky look. Abbas transforms the Bollywood hunk into India’s Clark Kent complete with toned down physique and nerdy look.
“The decision was to choose an actor who could play the character of Siddharth – someone who was on the heavier side in his childhood and who stammers in front of girls. I told John that I was not interested in the John Abraham that we all know. The John from Dostana wouldn’t be hesitant around anyone. It’s great that people are responding to the look in a whole different way,” says Abbas of the role for which John lost 8-10 kilos. Abbas, in fact, maintained constant vigil to ensure John didn’t sneak off to the gym to pump up his muscles.
As for Pakhi, she was Abbas’s casting director on Jaane Tu… and now she plays the lead in Jhootha Hi Sahi. “We had many showdowns where she would accuse me of messing up with her script. I would tell her that the writer has to step back once the director takes charge. We both are very passionate people and the film came first. But as an actor, Pakhi was completely different. She understood there was no functioning if she didn’t surrender,” adds Abbas.

After an impressive directorial debut in the form of Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na, all eyes are now on Abbas Tyrewala’s next outing as a director- Jhootha Hi Sahi. The film stars John Abraham and Pakhi in lead roles with a host of supporting actors such as Raghu Ram, Manasi Scott and Anahita Nair.
However, besides the above mentioned names there is a surprise element. One would also get to see R.Madhavan and Nandana Sen in guest appearances in the film. In fact, there were talks that even Kajol would be seen in the film. What’s more, the film’s official website also mentions her name as part of the cast. However, when we contacted producer Madhu Mantena, he confirmed Maddy and Nandana Sen’s presence in the film but denied the rumour that Kajol is in the film.

Raveena Tandon – Thadani may have cut down on movies but the actress still continues to make news. The actress will now feature in an eye-catching new ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)- India just in time for Lakme Fashion Week which will be held in Mumbai from 17-21 September. The ad shows the actress wearing a slinky outfit that resembles snakeskin while she is lying in a pool of ‘blood’ under the words, ‘Wearing Exotic Skins Kills. Leave Wildlife Out of Your Wardrobe’. While her outfit has been designed by Karishma Trehan, the ad was shot by Avinash Gowariker.
Speaking about this topic, Raveena said, “Wearing shoes, clothes and other accessories made out of exotic skin is about as cold-blooded as it gets. These days, there’s a wild kingdom of fake snake, mock croc and python leather that pay tribute to the beauty of these animals without making them fashion victims.”
With this, Raveena joins the likes of John Abraham, Pamela Anderson, Sir Paul McCartney and Jackie Chan, who are a few names who have taken part in campaigns of PETA to help animals.

The Sanjay Dutt-Kangna-Irrfan Khan thriller Knock Out is in censor trouble. The trailer has been banned by the censor board for an allegedly derogatory reference by Irrfan Khan to the 1000-rupee note.
Apparently, when someone in a scene wonders aloud why the 1000-rupee note is pink in colour Irrfan retorts, “Because it is created from the blood and sweat of the common man.”
The censor board raised an objection to what they see as a derogatory reference to the Indian currency. Rather than deleting the objectionable reference, the film’s makers have gone with the trailer to the revising committee.
Someone very close to the project says, “Why should the reference to the 1000-rupee note be seen as derogatory? What we’ve said is that politicians build their wealth on the betrayed trust of common people. Isn’t that the truth? Besides in Aashayein we have John Abraham constantly throwing money around, kicking and shoving wads of currency. Why didn’t the censor board object to that?”
Producer Sohail Makhlai confirms that the trailer has been stopped by the Censor Board. “It’s true they object to a dialogue on the 1000-rupee note. We’re now taking the trailer to the revising committee.”

One of the most awaited sequels is Race 2. After the super response to Race, the combo of director duo Abbas-Mustan and producer Ramesh Taurani (Tips) is all set to return with yet another high octane thriller. The casting of Race 2 has been a much talked about topic among industry folks and on last count it was heard that Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and John Abraham are part of the project while the leading ladies were yet to be finalized.
However, the latest is that the makers have just signed Priyanka Chopra for one of the main female leads. Confirming this, producer Ramesh Taurani says, “Yes Priyanka Chopra has been finalized for Race 2 while we are still on the look out for 2 more heroines.” On being asked, whom the actress was paired opposite, Taurani said, “That you will have to wait and watch as Race 2 is also full of twists and turns.”
Taurani also denied the rumours doing the rounds about Saif walking out of the project. “All these stories are completely false. Saif is very much a part of Race 2. He along with Anil Kapoor, John Abraham, and now Priyanka Chopra are the actors who are confirmed on board.”
With Priyanka joining the cast, Race 2 only gets hotter and hotter. We can’t wait!
