Mumbai: Rajnikanth-starrer Endhiran has netted a collection of Rs 117 crore, surpassing the first-week collection of Bollywood’s highest firstweek grosser, Dabangg (Rs 82 crore).
Distributor and trade analyst Suniel Wadhwa said, “The film’s net collection is Rs 60 crore in Tamil Nadu, Rs 30 crore in Andhra Pradesh, Rs 8 crore in Karnataka and Rs 4 crore in Kerala. The Hindi version (Robot) has managed to collect Rs 15 crore. As the numbers suggest, the film has already crossed Dabangg’s two weeks’ net collection in just the first week of its release.’’
Incidentally, the entertainment tax structure and ticket-pricing formula are not uniform in India. “Ticket prices in south India are much lower as compared to other states in the country. This is the reason why boxoffice collection in the south pales as against the collection in northern states. Despite all this, the film’s BO collections prove the film has done remarkably well,’’ Wadhwa said.
Moreover, considering the fact that an additional 7% had to be paid as as entertainment tax to the government for being a dubbed movie, the collections are even more significant, an expert said. According to Wadhwa, the contribution of director Shankar too needs to be factored in . “Shankar is one director who has more brand value than Rajinikanth in AP. His films with Arjun, Prabhudeva and Vikram did wonders in the past. His last movie with Rajini did well at the box office though opinions were divided. Robot is an example of what a director like Shankar and a hero like Rajini can cumulatively deliver. ’’
Endhiran opened in 2,200 screens as compared to 1,400 for Dabangg. An industry source said, “More screens mean more revenue and this too has helped Robot. Also about 92 % of cinema halls are running the film and the collection continue to be rock steady,’’ another analyst said.
The film’s report in the Hindi belt too is quite good. Distributor Sunil Bohra said, `“The collection of the film in places like Jodhpur, Ghaziabad and Meerut is also impressive. The film is doing well both in single screens as well as at multiplexes.’’
Sources insist that though it is too early to speculate, the film has definitely grossed Rs 260 crore which is more than the entire collection of Aamir Khan starrer Ghajini.
The Hindi version of the film too has done a business of nearly Rs 30 crore in the first week. Amod Mehra said, “Robot has broken all the records of a dubbed film. I don’t remember any similar film crossing even the Rs 1 crore mark. In fact, Rajinikant’s last release Sivaji was a disaster at the box office.”
Sooraj Barjatya beats the odds, fights family to get Salman back into the Rajshri banner as his favourite Prem
Salman’s ‘prem’ has won Sooraj Barjatya’s heart yet again (get the Maine Pyar Kiya reference?). The film went on to make box-office history. And now, Sooraj is planning to return to directing films after four years.
Recently, Mumbai Mirror reported that Salman will be seen in Sooraj’s next, in a cameo role. The latest development in that story is that the actor will be playing the lead in another film apart from this one. Sooraj plans to direct the second one next year some time.
Did you know: the male lead in his last film Vivah was written keeping Salman Khan in mind? It had to be played by Shahid Kapoor because Sooraj’s father, Raj Kumar Barjatya, opposed the idea of Sallu playing the lead. Apparently, Raj Babu, as he is fondly called, had banned Salman from his cinema after the blackbuck-killing incident in Jodhpur. He in fact instructed Sooraj to part ways with Salman professionally and personally.
His father’s decision came as a big blow to Sooraj, who was a very good friend of Salman’s at the time. But the obedient son did not go against his father’s wishes. Though reluctantly, Sooraj signed Hrithik Roshan for Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon, another role he had planned for Salman, and then Shahid Kapoor for Vivah.
So traumatised was he with these decisions that Sooraj decided not to direct any more films after that, until the rift with Salman was bridged. Sooraj seems to have mustered the strength now, to try and address the Salman issue with his father. The first step towards reconciliation is the cameo that Sooraj has offered Salman in the Rajshri production Love You Mr Kalaakar.
Says a very close associate to Sooraj, “Everyone at Rajshri had presumed that Soorajji would never direct another film. Without Salman Soorajji’s heart was just not in it. Salman had imbibed so many of Soorajji’s mannerisms that people said they looked like brothers. Salman was the only non-family male member who could move freely in and out of the Rajshri household. The black buck incident changed everything.”
But all is not lost. Commenting on Sooraj’s recent decision, the family friend says, “Though Soorajji, who never goes against his father’s wishes, quietly complied he had been missing Salman.” While Sooraj Barjatya remained unavailable for comment his sister Kavita said,”I am not aware what his plans are. But if Soorajji does start a new film it will surely be starring him (Salman). The whole family wants him to return to direction.” Cheers to new beginnings!
A film on Salman Khan’s stint in jail for the Chinkara case in trouble after the star makes discreet inquiries
A powerful star like Salman Khan is not someone the industry likes to trifle with. A producer, who wanted to chronicle the dark side of the star’s life in his film, found this out the hard way.
A month ago, producer Ranjit Sharma announced a film Qaidi No 210, which would show Salman’s days in jail for the chinkara hunting case. Chirag Patil, the son of cricketer Sandeep Patil, was to play Salman.
Of course, when Salman heard about this, naturally he made discreet enquiries about the film. And not surprisingly, the film has run into trouble and is unlikely to ever be made because the star enjoys the industry’s goodwill.
The lead actor Chirag and director Vicky Ranaut have walked out of the film. We also hear that Ranjit Sharma is untraceable. A source says, “He is in Jodhpur but his phone has been switched off.”
Chirag admits, “I don’t think that I’ll do this film. Sharma has been out of touch. The director Vicky Ranaut also didn’t convey any concrete plans about the project. I am only starting my career. I don’t want to start off by hurting anybody or doing anything stupid. I am happy with my two films Dev Anand’s Charge Sheet and Smita Thackeray’s Raada Rocks.”
Chirag also confessed that his father had told him to be careful before going ahead with this film. He says, “He did caution me. We’re close friends with Salman’s family.”
Director Ranaut also says that the main reason he left was that the film was portraying an uncomfortable slice of Salman’s life. “You know, Sharma was not even telling me the story. When I consented to do the film, he didn’t even tell me that he had Salman’s story in mind. Finally, I told him that I am not interested.”
The producer decided to go ahead with another director. Ranaut adds, “I think he has approached another director, Satyajit (child artiste in Shakti Samanta’s Anuraag, Punit Issar’s brother-in-law). And then I think that Salman asked Satyajit, ‘Who is this Ranjit Sharma who is gaining mileage using my name?’”
The latest is that Satyajit too is not doing the film. He was extremely frank and forthcoming, “I am certainly not doing Ranjit Sharma’s film on Salman Khan. Sharma is a fraud. I don’t trust him.”
When asked if Salman had asked him to not go ahead, Satyajit did not deny that the star had contacted him before he quit the film. “Salman sent me a text saying that I should meet him before taking a decision. Apparently, he didn’t like the idea of me doing this film. I quit soon thereafter. So, we didn’t reach a stage where my meeting with the star happened.”
Salman can breathe easy as the industry isn’t too keen to rake up his past.

|Mahendra Singh Rathore|
Here is another idiot er…. crazy fan of Aamir Khan. 42-year-old Mahendra Singh Rathore wants to be the first person to be issued the 3 Idiots ticket. If that happens, he will gift Rs 11,000 to Aamir Khan or Vidhu Vinod Chopra, whoever helps him fulfill his wish.
The man is travelling by train all the way from Jodhpur to reach Mumbai today. A TV producer will guide him to Aamir or Vidhu’s office. Rathore will meet Aamir with the request to arrange for the very first ticket to be issued to him only.
During his train journey yesterday, Rathore informed us, “I will stay in Lokhandwala Complex in Mumbai till 3 Idiots releases (December 25). I hope I don’t go back disappointed.”
But what triggered the need to offer the odd amount of Rs 11,000 to Aamir or Vidhu? Rathore explains, “Aamir or Vidhu certainly don’t need that amount but I will offer it to them as shagun, nothing else.
That’s my way of expressing joy. I want to be the first man to get the 3 Idiots ticket, that’s all. I love Aamir.
This man is just amazing. He never seems to fail. Saal mein ek film karta hai aur woh hamesha hit hoti hai. I have seen all his movies.”
