For millions who grew up watching Doordarshan in the late 1980s, Bhatti was always intelligent fun. He didn’t need big money to create meaningful and memorable comedy on the plight of the common man.

Sure, Kangna Ranaut is excited about playing an out-of-the-box character in Anand Rai’s Tanu Weds Manu, but she’s happier to have discovered a foodie in the director. Kangna loves eating and bonding over food with Anand has become her favourite pastime.
The two had a great time shooting for the film in Punjab and Lucknow, both known for their respective cuisines.
Confessing that she has never eaten better food on the sets of a film, Kangna says, “We were one foodie unit. While shooting at a restaurant in Jalandhar, Anand and I ordered for gulab jamuns. The two of us share the same passion for food. We both associate food with different emotions.
So he and I discussed how the gulab jamuns looked so innocent. I don’t think I have had better gulab jamuns than those.” Giving another instance, Kangna laughs, “One day the generators had stopped working. When I told Anand about them he said, ‘I have brought kulfis. Let’s have them before they melt.”
Obviously food is of primary concern. But at times Kangna can’t refrain from complaining about that, “See? Now you know why I put on weight.”Deepak Turbhekar
Another famous cricketer-film actress relationship goes for a toss
Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 24, 2010) India’s leading off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and Bollywood actress Geeta Basra have parted ways about two weeks ago. Not so long ago, Harbhajan had even introduced her to his parents during his sister Sandeep Kaur’s wedding in Jalandhar (Mumbai Mirror, March 19). The couple had even discussed marriage then.
Confirming the break-up, a friend of Geeta’s says, “Harbhajan called off the relationship. He is now going around telling friends that he is looking for a new girlfriend.”Harbhajan Singh
However, we hear, they still talk to each other. “There is no animosity at all. It’s just that they are no more a couple. They began to have differences, shortly after the IPL. The incompatibility levels amassed to irreconcilable proportions. Things spiralled out of hand.”
Geeta is feeling low but putting up a brave front. After all, she was very attached to Harbhajan, supporting him and cheering for him lustily on the ground in the many matches he played. “She really wanted this relationship to work. A lot of her friends in the industry want to ask her why this happened, and so suddenly. However, it would be very mean to ask her so soon.”
Standing up for Geeta, her friend adds, “She will now concentrate on her career. She has been getting a lot of offers for films. She should have realized that most relationships in More >
All rest and no work makes Kangna Ranaut a curvy girl. Surprisingly, the producers and director of Tanu Weds Manu are only too happy with her curvy avatar
By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 10, 2010)
// // // When the usually waif thin Kangna Ranaut fractured her foot in Jalandhar while shooting for Tanu Weds Manu she didn’t realise that all the bed rest will result in her gaining several pounds. Just twelve days of rest and gorging on Indian ghar ka khaana and mithaais while recuperating at her parents’ house in Manali has resulted in Kangna putting on 7 kgs.
Another factor that’s making Kangna’s resolution of staying in shape an uphill task is all the pampering by Tanu Weds Manu producers Vinod Bachchan and Shailesh Singh, and director Aanand Rai. The filmmakers have been making sure that Kangna eats to her heart’s content.
And her diet has gone from healthy greens to chhole bhature, gulab jamuns and jalebis, which they keep sending to her parents’ house ever since she fractured her foot. What’s making matters worse is that Kangna has also been giving a miss to her daily workout, which includes 2.5 hours of yoga and gym.
While Kangna is obviously not too happy about the extra weight, surprisingly, her director is delighted with her new curvy avatar. So what if all her costumes for Tanu Weds Manu have to be made all over again? Designer Reza is being sent to Manali to take Kangna’s new measurements for the costumes, which will be More >
Injured Kangna back in Mumbai, producer estimates loss at Rs 1.5 crore
By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 31, 2010)
Kangna Ranaut’s freak bike accident on the sets of Tanu Weds Manu in Jalandhar has burnt a hole in producer Sailesh Singh’s pocket – he claims to have incurred a loss of Rs 1.5 crore.
The actress injured her foot when the bike she was riding suddenly skidded. She is now back in Mumbai.
Sailesh now regrets not insuring the film. “I should have insured it. The tragic part is that I had spoken to an insurance agent on March 27 and we were supposed to get the film insured by end of the week. Unfortunately, the accident happened on March 28.” Now he has no choice but to grin and bear the loss.
The month-long shooting schedule in Punjab has been cancelled and Kangna’s co-actors, R Madhvan and Jimmy Shergill, were asked to pack up and go home. “I hope to get the combination dates of these three actors and resume the shoot by April 15. I think Kangna will be fine by then,” says Sailesh.
Kangna Ranaut fractured her left foot in a freak accident on the sets of Anand Rai’s Tanu Weds Manu yesterday. The actress was shooting for an action scene at Kapurthala, on the outskirts of Jalandhar.
A source from the unit reveals, “Kangna was riding a Bullet bike for the scene with a person sitting behind her when they lost balance and the bike skid. Kangna was wearing ghunghroos for that particular scene and when her foot got trapped under the tyre, the metal ghunghroo pierced her foot badly injuring her. When the crew finally extricated her from under the bike and the ghungroos were removed, her foot was bleeding.”The source continues, “Kangna’s foot was bleeding profusely and she was in immense pain. She was rushed to a hospital in Jalandhar and given first aid. The X-ray revealed that the damage was more serious than anticipated.”
Producer Shailesh Singh says, “She has a minor fracture and has been advised bed rest for at least a week. We are very concerned about her. We arranged for the best orthopaedic surgeon to do the surgery. We will figure out what happens to the shoot later. Right now, our only concern is that she gets well soon.”
Adds director Anand Rai, “The moment the bike skidded, everything seemed to come to a standstill. But I must say that she is a fighter. Even from the hospital bed, she’s been asking about More >
They’ve been an item for some time now, and cricketer Harbhajan Singh seems ready to take his relationship with actress Geeta Basra to the next level. A few days ago, Harbhajan even took Geeta home to meet his parents.
Geeta had been invited by the cricketer to attend a very private family function – his sister Sandeep Kaur’s wedding in Jalandhar – and the way she was welcomed by the family indicates she may become a part of it in the near future.
“Friends of both Harbhajan and Geeta have been nudging them to formalise their relationship. When Geeta was invited to attend the wedding in Jalandhar on February 20, it was very much a meet-the-parents kind of trip,” says a source.
Geeta also did not deny that she had met Harbhajan’s parents. “Yes, I did interact with them in Jalandhar, but it’s not like it was just me and them. Several other guests were also present then,” she said.
Last week, when Harbhajan was playing for Mumbai Indians against the Rajasthan Royals at the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai, Geeta was seen cheering wildly for him and rooting for his team. “Mukeshji and Nitaji (Ambani, who own the Mumbai Indians team) had invited me. So what if I was cheering for Mumbai Indians? Am I not from Mumbai?” said Geeta.
But ask her if some major announcement regarding her relationship with Harbhajan is More >
