Bollywood’s No 1 actress pays tribute to the evergreen jhumma chumma de de
Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; September 5, 2010)
Katrina Kaif plays a delectable item girl in Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan. Naturally, the USP of the film is the item song that Bollywood’s leading dance-director is picturising. In what can be described only as a master-stroke, she got Kat to render a version of the 1991 Hum song Jhumma Chumma De De that was originally picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and Kimi Katkar. And Bollywood is currently in a tizzy about it.
Katrina, who hasn’t seen the original, fails to understand the fuss. Very matter-of-factly she says, “I’m playing an item girl. And all the songs in the film have a variety of elements. One of the stanzas has this jhumma chumma de de bit and, God, I didn’t realise the magic of the song till we actually shot for it. The atmosphere was crackling with excitement; I had men jumping all around me with beer mugs in their hand.” Despite her playing down the whole element, this song from TMK may go down to create a terrific buzz because Kat has never looked more desirable! Her exposed midriff that is the cynosure of all eyes has become the talking point in Bollywood. Of course, Kat paid a huge price for looking like the diva she is. Says she, “I haven’t worked harder on my body than I have for this song. When Farah told me that I had to expose my full stomach, provocatively, right down to the hip line, I knew that I had to have the best body in the business.”
But after TMK Kat says she intends to maintain her washboard abs for herself. “I believe that the midriff is one of the most sensual parts of a woman’s anatomy but I will not expose my stomach for any of my films, at least not for a long time after TMK.” Farah is happy that she won Kat’s trust. Says she, “I’m glad Katrina has decided not to expose her belly-button for a long time to come. Guess this will also become the highlight of my film.”

Katrina cant wait to be item girl

Katrina Kaif can’t wait to let loose as an item girl for Tees Maar Khan; has personally shopped for accessories to get the right look
Katrina Kaif has never been known to raise her voice, let alone act aggressive, in public. But the actress is set to change that and more for Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan, in which she plays an item girl.
Suddenly, Katrina’s manner and speech have become loud and demonstrative even early in the morning at Malshej Ghat, where the film is currently being shot. The schedule begins at 5am every morning and the actress is not letting up in her own effort to look different in each of the item songs, being choreographed by Farah and her assistant Gita.
In fact Katrina has even shopped for her character’s look, right from clothes to accessories in small shops that sell cheap stuff. Commenting on her shopping frenzy, Katrina says, “It is a challenge doing a complete look for my character. I guess I learnt that from Raajneeti. Every accessory makes you feel more like the character.”
Katrina has also been catching up on the best item numbers in Bollywood, right from Mumtaz’s Tik tiki tik mera dil bole in Humjoli (1970) to Bipasha Basu’s Beedi jalaile in Omkara (2006), to get a more comprehensive understanding of the typical Bollywood item girl.
Akshay has been teaching Katrina the art of losing one’s inhibitions while dancing on camera. Katrina says, “I’ve always wanted to freak out on camera, to just get wild. This is my chance.”
Bips walks out of event after called ‘item girl’ by crowd?

It was supposed to be a starry conclusion to a high profile racing tourney, what with Bollywood stars Saif Ali Khan and Bipasha Basu arriving to give away the awards. All was well in the beginning as a smiling Bipasha and Saif were escorted to the VIP section from where they cheered for the horses.
When time came to reach the enclosure where the awards were to be given away, some youngsters in the crowd were so taken by Bipasha’s presence that some cat-calling started: ‘Bipasha, bidi jalay le!’, ‘Item girl!’
What could have easily been overlooked as harmless attention seeking, not an unusual feature when a Bollywood star is sighted, became an issue. A clearly irritated Bipasha left the venue soon after without giving away any awards. Saif followed her out of the venue and also left.
When contacted, Vivek Jain, the Chairman of the RWITC, said though he was present for the function, he was not aware whether or not Bipasha and Saif were supposed to give away any awards. “But they were there during the ceremony and in fact, I myself gave Bipasha a memento.” When asked why Bipasha and Saif didn’t stay back for the
final awards in the paddock as is the norm, Jain said that for this once the ceremony was held on the main track instead of the paddock.
When we finally got through to Bipasha Basu, she said, “It was all good. And the race was really good. I did not face any problem. Saif was there too and he also was comfortable.”

What made Farah settle for Akshay-Kat?
Jan 31st

The first surprise was ‘No SRK’… the second, Katrina opposite Akshay in Farah Khan’s film
SHARIN WADER BUTANI Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; January 31, 2010)
Now the story can be told. You know about Farah Khan’s big entertainer Tees Maar Khan, for which the director-choreographer, breaking tradition, signed on Akshay Kumar over all-time favourite Shah Rukh Khan. The dust over that dhamaka had not quite settled down when Farah took on Katrina Kaif to play the female lead opposite the Khiladi, thereby casting Bollywood’s most successful jodi together again and surprising the film industry immensely.
Farah has an explanation. She searched high and low among a hundred new faces hopeful of breaking into Bollywood to find a girl for Akshay. And she even considered all of Bollywood’s top rung actresses for the role, but came away dissatisfied. “You know, I had been telling people that I want a girl just like Katrina,” reveals Farah. “How silly of me! I then went on to sign Katrina herself.”
Katrina, who has done maximum number of films with Akshay, plays a wannabe item girl in TMK. Industry pundits whisper that Katrina’s determined to do serious films like Rajneeti in future because she wants to win the National Award. “That’s not true. I’m an actress and do what my director tells me to do. This role is something I’ve never done before. I’m excited about it and also to work with Farah,” says Katrina defensively.
As to why Akshay was chosen over SRK, Farah’s husband Shirish Kunder, who has written and produced the film along with Akshay’s production house, knew from the start that he wanted the Khiladi for his film. “I couldn’t think of anybody else to play this role and since I’d worked with Akshay in Jaaneman, I knew I had found my Tees Maar Khan,” says Shirish. Incidentally, this is Akshay’s first film with Farah. “Unless you consider the cameo I did for her in Om Shanti Om,” the actor prompts with a smile.
TMK is about a conman and, not strangely, Akshay slipped into the role easily. Among other sleight-of-thehand comnan tricks, he knows how to remove the watch from somebody’s wrist without the person even realising what’s happening. “I did that once with Abbas-Mustan. I exchanged their watches and what followed was total chaos,” says Akshay proudly.

Item girl Shefali Zariwala, who has appeared in dozens of music videos, including chartbuster Kaanta laga, indeed has been pricked by a sharp thorn — her estranged husband, Harmeet Gulzar. The starlet, a resident of Shastri Nagar, registered an FIR yesterday afternoon against the ‘Meet Brothers’ star at the Oshiwara police station.
“Zariwala holds a joint account with her husband in a well-known bank. According to her complaint, the two had a large row when he withdrew about Rs 12 lakh from the account. He even assaulted and abused her, which is what prompted such a drastic step,” said ACP Dilip Suryawanshi of the DN Nagar Division.
“We have registered a case under section 498A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code. We are yet to make any arrests in the case, but investigations are still on,” said DCP Zone IX, K M M Prasanna. The charge carries with it the potential for a three-year jail term.
Confirming the incident, Shefali said, “I can’t really speak about the matter as our divorce proceedings are still ongoing and the case is subjudice. But Harmeet did withdraw a large amount of money from the account without informing me. When I confronted him, he refused to give me an explanation.”
According to police, the 28-year-old performer has been suffering at the hands of her husband for quite some time. The distressed girl arrived at the Oshiwara police station wearing large sunglasses and a purple top, and spent several hours with police officials, who even allowed Shefali to park her car inside the police station, given her frame of mind.
The item girl, who holds an IT degree from Sardar Patel College of Engineering, Andheri, first shot to fame with the controversial Kaanta laga remix video, where she incited criticism for her attire and double entendres. She later starred in Mujse Shaadi Karogi (2004) along with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar.Shefali, when talking to us, further added, “Something ticked off in my psyche that led me to take this extreme step. I was being extremely harassed, literally pushed to a wall.” When we contacted a good friend of Shefali, she threw some light on what this ‘something’ might be. “Shefali was concerned for the safety of her family, which was being threatened under the strained relationship. Crooks have to be taught a lesson,” she alleged.
