It’s a tough life for most Bollywood beauties

WHERE’S THE MONEY, HONEY? (Clockwise) Jacqueline Fernandez, Ameesha Patel, Celina Jaitly, Dia Mirza and Lara Dutta

Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 28, 2010)

Blame it on recession, blame it on male superstars who’ve decided to become choosy. Blame it on the reduced number of films Bollywood now makes. Whatever the reason, the fact is that three-quarters of the film industry’s beauties live life in the shadows. Filmmaker Priyadarshan, who gets a knock on his door from many of these actresses, says he feels helpless but there is “only those many actresses who I can accommodate in my movies… and though I’d ideally like to create roles for the number of actresses I meet, it isn’t possible”. A leading producer confirms that when he spread the word that he is auditioning for his new film starting this September, he got calls from a dozen actresses. “Such is the paucity of good projects that when you announce one film, at least 10 good actresses turn up for the same role,” says he.

Sanjay Bhattacharya, a film financier, says that since medium budget movies have become fewer, roles for the middle-order guys and girls have completely dried up. “We’re either making top-order projects done by the A-list actors like the five Khans (Aamir, Shah Rukh, Salman, Saif and Imran), Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn and Ranbir Kapoor, or we are making arthouse cinema like Udaan, Tere Bin Laden and Love Sex Aur Dhokha. Dibakar’s next on Rajiv Gandhi assassination?

The filmmaker is shooting a political thriller loosely based on the ex-Prime Minister’s murder; Abhay Deol and Emraan Hashmi will act

Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 26, 2010)

Now that Dibakar Banerjee has had his fill with understanding the complexities of personal relationships in Love Sex Aur Dhokha, the director is taking an interest in politics.

His next is supposedly a political thriller that is loosely based on ex-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination. The film will star Abhay Deol and Emraan Hashmi in the lead roles. Dibakar is yet to cast an actress to play the female lead.

A source says, “Dibakar is considering Manisha Koirala and Sushmita Sen for the role of a female politician in the film. Talks are also on with Kalki for playing the female lead in the film.”

Apparently, Dibakar has been wanting to make this political thriller for long now, but he got busy with LSD and this project was put on hold. Initially, he had planned to make the political thriller with Imran Khan and Abhay Deol with Katrina Kaif as the female lead.

Dibakar Banerjee Abhay Deol Emraan Hashmi

But Dibakar’s plans with Imran Khan didn’t work out because the actor couldn’t work out dates for the director. Imran Khan has now lost the film to his namesake (well almost), Emraan Hashmi.

Although the film is not based on the late Prime Minister’s life, it supposedly revolves around his death and the way he was killed. Dibakar has been More >

Imran’s got Katrina and Priyanka panting

Both hotties are now eyeing the light-eyed boy

Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 26, 2010)

In the flaky world of films everyone is as good as his last Friday. And the light-eyed Imran Khan, who had a hit in I Hate Luv Storys, is suddenly the object of Bollywood’s desire. Super-hotties Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra, who were chasing Ranbir Kapoor fast and furiously, completely over-looked Imran who was standing in the bylanes post those disasters Kidnap and Luck. In fact, when Sanjay Gadhvi’s 7 Days in Paris with Imran and Kat fell by the wayside after these two actors reportedly had “issues”, Kat didn’t even blink her mascaraed lashes. And PC, too, seemed in no hurry to come to the rescue of the pariah called Imran.

But all that stands changed post IHLS. And, why aren’t we surprised that the hoity-toity actresses now have a different stance on Aamir Khan’s light-eyed nephew. Reliable sources say that after Karan Johar announced his Short Term Shaadi (working title) with Kareena Kapoor and Imran, he reportedly got a message from Kat asking him why she was not selected for the Imran film. It is said that Karan assured her that his banner would be making many more films with Imran and, of course, Kat would be definitely considered for a role with the boy.

Sources close to Priyanka say that she has to choose between two films currently. One is said to be with Imran and the second could be Kunal Kohli’s film with Saif Ali Khan. PC is More >

Imran & Shakun fight over title of KJo’s next

Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 21, 2010)

As we reported recently, producer Karan Johar has cast Imran Khan in his next, which is being directed by debutant Shakun Batra.

This romantic comedy will have Imran romancing Kareena Kapoor.

Turns out, Imran and Shakun can’t see eye-to-eye all of a sudden. Imran was apparently very keen on calling the film Short Term Shaadi, which had temporarily become the working title for the film.

Imran Khan Kareena Kapoor

Director Shakun Batra has rejected Imran’s title despite the fact that Imran and the film’s writer Ayesha Devitre had strongly endorsed it.

You might wonder why Shakun should be obliged to take Imran’s suggestion anyway. That’s because Shakun and Imran actually go back a long way. The two became friends during Imran’s debut film Jaane Tu… in which Shakun was assisting Abbas Tyrewala. It was Imran who recommended Shakun to Karan Johar.

Clearly, the favour wasn’t unconditional because Imran’s now quite miffed with Shakun for turning down the title he had suggested.

Commenting on this, Karan says, “Yes Shakun didn’t like the title Short Term Shaadi. It was only a working title in the first place. Imran and my writer Ayesha were kicked about Short Term Shaadi.

Karan Johar

But Shakun would hear none of it. We at Dharma go completely by the director’s vision. So we’re hunting for a new title now. What is decided for sure is that the film will be shot in Las Vegas.’

Kareena to go back to Size Zero?

Kareena ordered by KJo to drop a couple of sizes to romance Imran

Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 19, 2010)

Everything about the project is under wraps right now. But if there is one recent film announcement that has got Bollywood truly excited it is the news of Kareena Kapoor teaming up with today’s poster boy Imran Khan.

Bollywood is happy that there will be one more star pair for them to market. Yes, these very good-looking actors have been signed by Karan Johar for his Short Term Shaadi, a film that is reportedly on the lines of the Cameron Diaz-Ashton Kutcher romcom What Happened in Vegas.

A source says that the film is likely to go on the floors in the month of November 2010. And Karan and his core team have been in closed-door meetings about the look of the characters, the locations, costumes, etc.

While Imran said, “I’m not at liberty to discuss anything about the film right now.” Kareena too has been vowed to secrecy by the creative team. However, it is being said that Karan has reportedly asked Bebo to lose weight again. BT managed to get some inside details. A source said, “It is ironical. Kareena had just started eating to look slightly rounded because her boyfriend Saif Ali Khan is tired of her looking like a clothes hanger.”

The actress herself had confessed, “Saif likes my butt,” and got a lot of rebuttal from the press for “talking like that”. So she had immediately backed off. But the bottom line is Bebo had More >

‘Icon’ Imran meets Gay fans

Meena Iyer (BOMBAY TIMES; July 17, 2010)

That he is a gay icon, even Imran Khan is willing to admit and accept. His poster from I Hate Luv Storys, shirtless and with the jeans riding perilously low, excited the gays as much as it sent the girls in a tizzy. And so Karan Johar, master at the game of publicity, went one step beyond this poster by organising a small and special screening of his film on Thursday for members of the gay fraternity. The private theatre in Bandra had people sitting in the aisles, Imran among them. Youngsters like Praful Baweja and Samir Sheth, who caught the screening, were overjoyed to spend time with their icon. They said Imran is a “sensitive, gayfriendly person” unlike a lot of abrasive actors. The actor himself was modest about the attention and said, “I have always believed in gay rights. I don’t think there are gay love stories and straight love stories. I think all love stories are beautiful because ‘love’ is that kind of an emotion.” However, he didn’t think he deserved the title of ‘gay icon’ because he hadn’t done anything significant for the cause of the community. On the contrary, his film had a few innuendos about being gay. “And humour does stand a risk of annoying someone somewhere. However, I can say that none of the jokes or jibes are meant to hurt anyone,” the actor said. He posed for photographs and signed autographs. But when asked for his phone number, Imran shyly declined to share More >

Ranbir-Imran raazi, toh kya karega paparazzi!

The two youngsters insist their latest fight is just media-generated

Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 17, 2010)

Bollywood’s latest entrants, Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan, are giving the media a repeat performance of the act made famous by their seniors — Aamir Khan and Bollywood Badshah SRK.

You remember, don’t you, that when Aamir and Shah Rukh appeared on a common podium for a cause, they got as much mileage in every newspaper and channel as the Obama-Manmohan Singh meeting did. What Aamir and SRK really think about each other is fodder for gossip. But when the two choose to do their brotherhood act for the press, then their picture speaks a thousand words.

In the same manner, Ranbir and Imran have combined forces to prove the media wrong. Following the story BT broke of their rift post Imran’s fiancé Avantika Malik’s anti-Raajneeti remarks (a story that others blatantly lifted), Ranbir and Imran have a different take on their supposed fall-out.

When Ranbir, who is shooting for Rockstar in New Delhi, heard about the story, he promptly messaged his ‘friend’ to say they should actually start bad-mouthing each other so that the press has something to write about. In other words — let’s make a fool out of the press.

Fresh from the success of I Hate Luv Storys and the more sincere of the two, Imran is definitely not comfortable with such suggestions. “Ranbir did message me,” he admitted, “but honestly, there is no fight between us. Till the day Ranbir More >

Two films being thought of with Kareena and Ranbir

Subhash K Jha | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 14, 2010)

The race is on in Bollywood between filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala and director Rohit Jugraj to see who can get Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor in a film together first. The fact that the two cousins, Bollywood’s hottest properties, cannot romance each other on screen has gone down very well indeed with Imran Khan — the new sensation after the success of I Hate Luv Storys. Exploiting the situation, Imran began an ‘I Love Bebo’ campaign that has worked, and the young actor has already signed on to do a film for Karan Johar opposite Kareena. But there is hope for the cousins, yet. Sajid Nadiadwala, whose Anjaana Anjaani Kareena had to opt out of because it starred Ranbir, is planning a film with the two. “We don’t have to think of a romantic pair all the time. There are so many wonderful films where the lead pair is not romantically involved, like Kamal Haasan and Sridevi in Sadma and Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore in Amar Prem,” said Sajid.

And there’s Rohit Jugraj who is currently writing a script called Cousins which he has designed specially for Kareena and Ranbir. At the moment, all he will reveal is that it’s the story of first cousins who get together to fight for a common cause. Kareena had once said, “I would like to work with Ranbir. He is so talented. I know we can work magic together. But he is my brother. How can I star opposite him? Maybe it was never meant to be.” But, More >

Mera time accha chal raha hai-Aamir Khan

Says Aamir Khan in a candid chat about developing a new positive attitude, even while taking digs at himself and how it has helped him develop his career

Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 13, 2010)

Though an hour late for the interview, Aamir seems optimistic about this discussion. He enters his office with a smile, apologises and makes himself comfortable on the couch for the interview. Excerpts…

• People know you to be inapproachable, but Anusha Rizvi sent you one mail and you agreed to make a film? (Laughs). I don’t know why people have this misconception. I was shooting for Mangal Pandey – The Rising when I got this mail. Anusha had written about a script called The Falling. At first I thought she was making fun of me because I was working on The Rising. But later, she mailed me one line that I loved. I met her when I was in Delhi shooting for Rang de Basanti. She narrated the script of Peepli Live and I loved it.

People say that you have a winning formula for every film you touch?

Frankly, I don’t have an answer for this. Mera time accha chal raha hai isliye meri filmein chal rahi hai.  I just do what I feel like doing at that point of time. I happened to read Anusha’s script and I made Peepli Live. There might be 20 other scripts lying here but I have not read them. I made these films the way I wanted to because they appeal to my sensibilities. I deal with every film differently, there More >

We’re coming of age, out of the closet, going global-Karan Johar

In the last three years, Karan Johar has made his banner a tour-de-force

Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 13, 2010)

If you conduct a popularity poll in Bollywood, Karan Johar will win hands down. He’s on every superstar’s wish-list. And it’s his cinematic genius that has contributed to making his banner, Dharma Productions, one of the top-five in Bollywood today. It was floated by Karan’s father — Yash Johar, three decades ago, but in the last couple of years, it has grown in stature because of Karan’s vision. Of course, he doesn’t think like that, “Movies are a passion. I know nothing else. I don’t even have a personal life anymore. But I can’t take the entire credit for taking Dharma where it has reached today. If we have made significant strides in the last three years, it’s because I’ve been supported by a very young, energetic and able team.”

Ecstatic about the success of his latest rom-com I Hate Luv Storys, Karan says while he kept a close watch on the budget, it is the young, yuppy team of director Punit Malhotra, lead pair Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor that made this date film a rage. “When my father was around, Dharma mostly made films directed by me. But post Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna we expanded and have dabbled with a coming out of the closet film like Dostana; a coming of age film like Wake Up Sid; a terrorist drama like Kurbaan; a global film like My Name Is Khan; and, now the date flick like IHLS,” he says.
