By Bollywood Hungama News Network, February 25, 2011 – 15:25 IST

Salman Khan made a heroic entry in a helicopter on the sets of his forthcoming film Bodyguard in Pune. Sallu, who was actually in Jaipur for a charitable event, air-dashed to Pune so that the unit didn’t have to waste a day.

Apparently, on the said day, Salman wasn’t required on the sets since the team of Bodyguard were planning to shoot Kareena Kapoor’s solo portions. However Bebo fell ill and the unit was left wondering what to do the whole day. That’s when Salman being the professional that he is rushed in a private helicopter from Jaipur to Pune so that the crew didn’t have to waste a day.

Narrates a source who was present on the sets, “The shooting had come to a halt since Kareena fell ill and Salman wasn’t expected till much later. A lot of time would have been wasted and nearly 200 people would have been left hanging if it weren’t for Salman’s quick thinking. He air-dashed from Jaipur to Pune and even requested the pilot to halt at the Symbiosis Institute of Management so that time would be saved,”

Producer Atul Agnihotri too confirmed the story, “Salman bhai saved a day’s shooting for us after Kareena fell ill and was advised two days of bed rest. We were canning a song that day and so I didn’t have a supporting cast to fall back on. I requested Salman bhai to return early and he was back by the time we’d finished lunch. And we shot some solo portions with him.”

A K Hangal: Sunset boulevard

A K Hangal, iconic character artiste who has appeared in nearly 200 films, is ill and impecunious

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 20, 2011)

For decades he made cinephiles weep with him, at him as he battled bereavement, exploitation and misery on screen. At 95, Avtar Kishan Hangal, aka A K Hangal, remembered for some of the most heart-rending roles in Hindi cinema, battles a fading memory, illness and acute penury.

Saraswati Mansion in Santacruz (East), where the veteran actor lives with his 74-year-old son, Vijay, looks run down, and in crying need for repairs. But neither Hangal, who is confined to the bed, or his son, who suffers from a debilitating back problem, are in any position to bring about cosmetic changes to their modest dwelling, struggling as they are to pay for medication.

A friend of the Hangal family told Mumbai Mirror, “Hangal saab was an active participant in the Indian freedom struggle and he acted in nearly 200 films. It is sad to see him reduced to such a state where he has to depend on benefactors for survival.”

Hangal and his son have depleted their savings. Vijay was a Bollywood photographer. “But I am 74 years old now and can’t be running around clicking pictures on the field. Besides, there is the back problem,” he tells us.

Despite his contribution to the film industry, the city has not been kind to the actor. In 1993 Hangal had applied for a More >

I can’t give hourly updates on my life-Rani Mukerji

Anubha Sawhney Joshi | TNN (THE TIMES OF INDIA; January 2, 2011)

I am a good girl, claims Rani Mukerji. A paradoxical statement from someone, whose latest film promos show her both smoking and swearing. But the light eyed actress can’t understand why such a ruckus is being created. “People curse when they’re very angry. Sometimes that’s the best way to express one’s emotions. I wonder why some people are acting all shocked at my character,” she questions, her eyes flashing in disapproval. “Also, anyone who’s seen my film “Bichhoo” would know that the words I use in “No One Killed Jessica” (NOKJ) are nothing compared to that.” Remind her gently that not many would have heard of — let alone seen — “Bichhoo” (2000), and she shoots back, “Trust me, all my fans remember that film.”

Rani talks a lot about her fans. That’s why, it’s surprising she’s not on any social networking website, giving them regular updates on her daily doings. “I just can’t keep up with that. Forget my fans, I can’t give anyone an hourly update on my life. I’ve never done it, I can’t begin now.”

Speak to her for a bit and her selfassurance is evident. The fact that she hasn’t given a hit since “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” (2006) hasn’t shaken her confidence. “Of course, I care about box office success. When you work hard on a film, you want people to watch it, you want the producer to make money, you want accolades for your performance. So yes, I am bothered about how More >

Tulip Joshi booked for cheating producers

Bharati Dubey | TNN (THE TIMES OF INDIA; January 2, 2011)

Mumbai: An FIR has been lodged against actor Tulip Joshi in Kerala for cheating. The producers of the film Dam999 have alleged that she took advance payment of Rs 8.5 lakh to act in the film but did not honour the contract.

Joshi, however, denied the allegations. She said, “I had fallen ill and even mailed the number of doctor so they could cross-check. I was waiting for the production house to call me back for shooting, but I found later that they had replaced me with another actor. I had blocked by dates for the film because of which I lost out on other assignments and money.”

Line producer of the film, Vinod Unnithan said they had signed Joshi for Rs 14 lakh and paid her 50% in advance. “After two days of shooting, she wanted to go to Delhi and promised to come back. We booked her tickets but we got a call from her saying that she was not well. She asked us to postpone the shoot, which we did. Later, she alleged that her role was not good enough and didn’t want to continue with the project. We replaced her with Megha Burman, a newcomer.”

The director of the film, Sohan Roy, said, “We have lost Rs 50 lakh because of Joshi. We don’t know how the distributors will react to a new actor.”

Unnithan said, “I even visited the flat at Pali Hill, where she had signed the contract, but she wasn’t there. Her friend threatened us that he had connections in high places and would shut down our production More >

Asin experiences the caring side of Salman

By Subhash K. Jha, December 31, 2010 – 21:02 IST

Salman seems to have taken Asin completely under his wings. Earlier this month, he not only took her on a safari in the National Park – just the two of them – he also looked after her constantly when she fell ill shooting for Ready.

Is Asin going the Priyanka Chopra way? Driving herself to a nervous exhaustion. Like Priyanka, Asin’s mom is a doctor.

Laughs Asin palely, “So the warnings are being served up with stern regularity. I know I’ve been overdoing it. But it couldn’t be helped. I fell ill because of the round-the-clock shoots and the weather change. I was doing two shifts a day. I was doing my makeup at 6am to start shooting for ads and photo sessions by 7pm and that too in the chilly outdoors. Then I’d head to Film City to shoot for Ready with Salman.”

By now it is clearly established that there are two Salman Khans: the slap-happy one and the sensitive caring soul whose heart bleeds for others. It was the gentle caring side of Salman which surfaced last week on the sets of Anees Bazmee’s Ready when Asin fell ill with exhaustion-induced fever. Since the shooting could not be stopped (the climax involving approximately 25 actors was being shot) Salman not only made sure Asin was comfortable, he would check on her every hour to ensure she had her food and medicines.

Says a source, “This was an incredibly compassionate side to Salman. He would keep inquiring about how Asin was feeling. And he More >

Mommy, help me stalk Asin!

Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; November 23, 2010)

Desperate fans often resort to desperate measures but this particular one should go down in history. For many months now, Asin has had an obsessive admirer called Samuel keeping close track of all her moves.

And Samuel is no ordinary fan. From trying to follow her to her shooting schedules to getting her attention on the Internet, Samuel has been persistent.

Says a source close to Asin, “This person tried getting her phone number from Asin’s business manager. When he failed, he pleaded he just wanted to talk.”

Failing this attempt, Samuel did the unthinkable. He put his mother on the job. And she agreed to help him too! Says the source, “She started calling Asin’s business manager, saying that her son wanted to marry Asin. With time, this too failed. But Samuel didn’t give up.”

Samuel convinced his mother to send one last SMS to Asin’s manager saying Samuel is critically ill and wants to meet Asin one last time. The message read, “Samuel is critically ill (sic); he spells out your name every time he wakes up. Kindly do us a favour of seeing him one last time before anything happens.” Thankfully, Asin didn’t comply with that.

Says the actress, “If he was a genuine fan he wouldn’t harass my staff this way.” But necessity is the ‘mother’ of invention.

Piggy Chops gets steamy with Naseer

Making love onscreen to thespian Naseeruddin Shah was the toughest thing for Priyanka Chopra though she has worked with the actor in the past

Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 30, 2010)

Vidya Balan’s kissing scene with Naseeruddin Shah in Ishqiya was hooted at because of its effortlessness. Wonder if it proved to be a DIY lesson for Priyanka Chopra, who shot some intimate scenes with Naseer recently for her film Saat Khoon Maaf. Naseer plays one of Priyanka’s seven husbands.

Seven years ago (coincidentally), when Priyanka first shared screen space with Naseer in Rajiv Rai’s Asambhav, she could barely look him in the eye. In fact, Priyanka was petrified of Naseer. Obviously, enacting love-scenes with an actor 33 years her senior was a near impossibility. But Naseer plays her “oldest husband” in the film.

But when Naseer returned to Coorg to resume the shooting schedule after a bout of ill health, he was apparently in great spirits. Says a source from the unit, “At first, Priyanka was very cautious and naturally respectful to Naseer. Overcautious in fact, because Naseer had fallen ill just after a day’s shoot with Priyanka. So Priyanka felt doubly apprehensive.”

Apparently, it was a cakewalk for Priyanka from the moment Naseer entered the sets. The actor hit it off brilliantly with her.

Says Priyanka, “Naseer sir and I had worked together many years ago in an espionage film called Asambhav. I remember I would look at his More >

Sunny’s SOS trip to America

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 03, 2010)

Sunny praji is suffering from serious health issues. He was flown to the US on Wednesday for medical treatment. His office has cancelled all his meetings for the next two weeks.

Interestingly, there are several reasons for his urgent trip to the US, all of which seem to be contradictory. Not so long ago, Sunny Deol had said, “I have been ill since the past few years and have a severe back problem. It’s under control now. But when it does act up,  I’m forced to slow down.”

A source confirms, “Sunny’s back problem has aggravated. He was admitted to a city hospital last week, but the problem intensified. The worried family has sent him to the US for better treatment.”

But Sunny’s secretary Nina offered a completely different reason, “Sunny has a kidney stone, which needs to be treated. That’s why he has gone to the US.” When asked why he chose to be treated in the US , Nina shot back, “I didn’t ask him all that. He should be back in seven days.”

Sunny’s man Friday Tolaram, who has been working for him since his debut in Betaab, had another story to tell, “Sunny Saheb is in the US not for any treatment. His kidney stone was cured in the city hospital recently and his back problem is over. He is absolutely fine. He has gone to the US to be with his kids who have been holidaying there since a few days. He will be back after fifteen days.”

It’s not been easy for the Deols on the health front. Due to Sunny’s More >

Big B sick again?

…the superstar is recuperating in London

Subhash K Jha | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; June 25, 2010)

Who said Amitabh Bachchan ditched his press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday to announce his return to the Kaun Banega Crorepati hotseat because he wanted to spend time in London with his grandkids? Not true at all! All of Bollywood will tell you, if there is one artiste who is 100% professional, then it is the Big B. And the report that ‘Nanaji Bachchan’ cancelled his return (and, thereby the press conference, leaving the entertainment channel’s head honchos red faced) to entertain grandchildren Navya Naveli and Agastya over lunch and soccer in London, must have the Big B in a twitter. And, who said earlier that Amitabh Bachchan had failed to attend the release of Gautam Rajadhyaksha’s book because he had gone into hiding in London and was licking the wounds his family had suffered from the savage mauling of Raavan? He was to be the chief guest, you remember, along with Lata Mangeshkar. Instead, Jaya Bachchan flew down from London for the book launch, and provided Gautam and Lataji an added show with Rekha!

Rumour is that the Big B is unwell. And he has been advised not to travel for a while. What is wrong with him, nobody knows, but going by past experiences… alarm bells start ringing in Bollywood even if Bachchan Sr comes down with the flu. So, the Bachchan parivar has flown down to be by his side. Abhishek and Aishwarya, postponing or More >

Rajeev Khandelwal is the lead in Joker

By Subhash K. Jha, January 16, 2010 – 10:22 IST

With the director Sourabh Narang of Rajeev Khandelwal’s next project falling seriously ill, the actor has now gone to another project entitled Joker which starts shooting on 20th January. To be directed by Kumar Gaurav’s cousin Vikram Tuli, the film, the story of a father and his young son was earlier supposed to be made with Javed Jafrey in the lead. Sportingly Rajeev admits the role was earlier offered to Javed. “Joker has gone through many changes. I’m aware Javed Jafrey was offered the role.”

Earlier when Javed was doing it, the son was to be 7-year old. With Rajeev in the cast the son’s age is now 4.

The film to be shot at a stretch from 20th January to 20th February in New Zealand will star Rajeev with Prachi Desai playing his leading lady. Rajeev begins this film in lieu of Sourabh Narang’s Return Gift which has now got indefinitely postponed until the director recovers.

There’s just one hitch. The title Joker belongs to Shirish Kunder who is all set to start a film by that name. The makers of the Khandelwal film were hoping to get the title from Shirish. But with Shirish apparently ready to make a film of that title, Rajeev says their project will have to seek another title.

“We don’t know what to call it because Joker was the most suitable title,” Rajeev says helplessly, hoping for the ailing director of Return Gift to recover shortly. “Sourabh was about to start his film when this happened. We’re all waiting for him More >
