After creating magic on the big screen, Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met is hitting the idiot box

Mauli Singh (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 05, 2010)

Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met is coming on the small screen, very soon. A popular entertainment TV channel is coming up with the remake of one of the most loved romantic films of recent times.

Since the movie was very successful and it struck a chord with people across all age groups and classes the makers of the TV show are hoping to cash in on this mass appeal. The producers want to recreate the magic of the movie and have approached the same cast (barring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena) and are even planning to shoot at the same locations. They have also roped in the assistant director of Imtiaz Ali on Jab We Met as the creative head on the show.

An actor, on the condition of anonymity, confirms, “Yes they have approached me for the show. They told me that they want to recreate the magic of Jab We Met and want to cast the same cast as the film. Obviously they can’t get Shahid and Kareena but they are trying to get their lookalikes.”

A source from the production house informs, “Yes we are doing a remake of Jab We Met. Imtiaz Ali is aware of this. Though he is busy with his film, we are trying to get his inputs on the show since he is the master mind behind the original.” The source adds, “The shooting will start from next month.

Bollywood hits back this IPL

The challenge Bollywood is all set to hit back. And how! A couple of years back when Season One of Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket competition kick started, not many were prepared for its might. In fact the only film which succeeded in a major way despite the onslaught of the cricket matches was Emraan Hashmi starrer Jannat. Yes, the film was well made but its success was also primarily due to the fact that this film from the house of Bhatts dealt with match fixing and betting, something which was quite contemporary at its best.

However, Bollywood pretty much realised that with matches beginning from 4 PM in the evening and wrapping up around 11 PM in the night, it was futile to bring any new releases in theatres while the tournament was on. This is the reason why in 2009 there were no biggies announced in the duration was IPL was scheduled. It was a different matter that this time period also saw the stand off between producers and multiplexes which led to a total draught of movies in theatres. However, it was quite clear that even without the strike, no filmmaker with crores riding on his project would have dared to bring it up in theatres.

Comments an insider, “Yes there was this waiting period but then it only led to double trouble. First and foremost there was no software made available to theatres which means that Bollywood wheels stopped moving for a couple of months, hence bringing the More >

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Lahore opened to a very dull 5-10% response. The film has been liked by critics but will find it difficult to make an impact at the box office.

Love Sex Aur Dokha opened poorly with first day figures of around 25-30% at multiplexes. The film has poor reports and is unlikely to have much of a theatrical run but as costs are very low the film will be a profitable venture.

Shaapit opened poorly at around 15-20% at multiplexes but many single screens showed decent business with collections of 40% plus. The film has decent reports and could score at the box office especially in single screen dominated circuits.

Idiot Box is a complete washout and will struggle to stay in theatres over the weekend.

Right Yaaa Wrong had a poor first week with collections around the 3 crore nett mark. DISASTER

Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? remained steady in week two with around 7.50 crore nett business taking its two week business to around 23 crore nett. ABOVE AVERAGE

Idiot Box will show how the Indian male suffers on account of the saas-bahu soaps By Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 15, 2009)

S B Singh heard the alarm bells ringing when he noticed that his wife preferred television soaps over him. Ekta Kapoor’s string of K-serials and their clones had the women in Singh’s family glued to the television.

This is when Singh, owner of a sweetmeat chain, decided to make a film to show how his personal life was affected by the saas-bahu sagas. He said, “My friends have also gone through a similar ordeal. My film will speak for them.” The film has been appropriately titled Idiot Box.

Talking about his experience, Singh said, “I usually get home by 8.30 pm after work. But my wife remains glued to the TV till 10.30 pm. I told her to watch the reruns in the afternoon. But she uses the afternoons to take a nap.” Singh, who lives in a joint family, faced this problem with all the women in his household. “But nobody seemed to listen,” he added.  To add to his woes, they kept talking about the storylines and the characters in those shows.

Singh decided to retaliate. “I started returning late,” he said. “I went out with my friends. My wife questioned me and I clearly told her about my problem. Agar woh 11 tak TV dekhegi, toh main ghar pe aake kya karoon?”

Singh and his wife discussed the issue. He said, “She accepted that she was wrong. But there are many such couples, who haven’t resolved their More >

WATCH OUT: Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan SHARIN WADER BUTANI Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; November 21, 2009)

It’s enough to make Bollywood sit up in horror… but this is not that kind of rumour. Shah Rukh Khan’s stunning and fashionable wife Gauri is reportedly doing a TV show for a popular channel that’s based on investigative crime stories. Not one to get into the reality show genre, Gauri’s production house is working on short crime stories on the lines of the hit TV show CID. Apparently, the buzz is that the Bollywood Badshah would like to rule Tellyland as well. And after producing a couple of shows for the idiot box, SRK is keen to do one like America’s Next Top Model which is hosted by Hollywood sizzler Tyra Banks. For this, Shah Rukh has apparently roped in Bollywood hottie Bipasha Basu and his show will be called Female Model Hunt.
