In B-Town newcomer Gulzar Chahal’s case, his reel and real life bore uncanny resemblances.
Gulzar, who debuts in Puneet Issar’s I Am Singh is nicknamed Pathan in real life and his email ID is path...@hotmail.com. It was this peculiar ID choice that led to him being grilled by the immigration office in Los Angeles on landing in the US, even with all valid documents in place.
Says a source, “All necessary formalities for his personal visit had been completed. Apparently, his email ID had raised a red flag. The immigration officer questioned him for 15 minutes, asking him to explain why he chose that ID. The incident left an indelible impression on Gulzar.”
At around the same time, I Am Singh (releasing December 2) was offered to him. Gulzar plays a Sikh facing racial discrimination in the film. Adds the source, “His real-life experience got him charged enough to take up the role. He felt that Puneet’s offer could not have come at a more apt time. Also, the Punjabi boy felt that he seriously needed to clear lingering misconceptions about his community in the minds of the Americans.”
The actor confirms, “I can never forget that incident. It made me realise what my community must be going through there. I am glad that I got a chance to represent them through this film. Today the Sikh clan is settled in different places of the world and I want my film to reach out to not only them but also the international audience.”
