With Bollywood taking the risqué route, audiences can expect a hotter summer ahead

SARAH SALVADORE Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; March 29, 2010)

If crazy titles, out-of-the- box ideas and experimental cinema was big in 2009, this year promises to be no different. Apart from the cinematic aspect, the Hindi film industry is looking at capturing the market with their darebare act. Kissing on screen or shedding inhibitions regarding outfits and story ideas; Bollywood has never been so bold.

A look at some of the releases this year will prove that B-Town is indeed taking a step towards making some bold moves in cinema. From Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori’s sizzling onscreen chemistry in Kites to the three bikini babes of Housefull Deepika, Lara and Jiah, Dibakar Banerjee’s shocking Love, Sex Aur Dhoka and Vivek Oberoi’s lip lock with Aruna Shields in Prince — It’s Showtime, these films managed to create a buzz even before they hit the screens.

While the audience is lapping up everything that comes their way, industry folks are a happy lot with this new bolder face of Hindi cinema. “The Indian film industry and Hindi films are going through this wonderful phase where more and more experimental genres are being tapped into,” says an upcoming actor. “We are making some of the world’s finest films. In time, we’ll look back at these films and consider them as landmarks — cinema that truly took Hindi movies global,” says the More >

Dino Morea turned the charm on for Kangna Ranaut at Sanjay and Manyata’s wedding anniversary party; take a look at the smoking hot goodnight peck

By Sonal Chawla (MUMBAI MIRROR; February 15, 2010)

// // // Dino Morea is certainly living up to his Casanova image. At the second wedding anniversary party of Sanjay Dutt and Manyata on Friday night, Dino had eyes only for Kangna Ranaut. And watching the PDA in action, it didn’t seem like the single again Kangna was minding the attention one bit.

While the party, held at Sanjay’s and Manyata’s residence, was off limits to the press, a source at the party reveals, “It was a well attended affair and several couples like Shilpa and Raj Kundra, Sunil and Mana Shetty, Fardeen and Natasha Khan, David Dhawan and wife Lalli, besides some others like Kirron Kher and Amar Singh were present. Dino, who made an appearance sans his steadiest girlfriend Nandita Mahatani, had lots to talk about with Kangna Ranaut. Before long, they were chatting away so intimately that it was difficult to believe that this was their first proper meeting at a private party.”

The source continues, “During the course of the evening, Kangna was seen mostly around Dino and they were overheard discussing movies, especially their common interest in Hollywood films. Dino flattered her with many compliments about her best roles. Interestingly, when they both decided to leave at the same time, they hugged each other rather warmly and the peck on the cheek More >

It was always felt that Hollywood films’ release in India won’t harm the prospects of Bollywood films. But the success of Titanic, King Kong, Spiderman series and more recently the blockbuster collections of 2012 has finally made everyone realize that Hollywood is a force to reckon with in India too. And that’s why all Hindi films scheduled to release on 18 Dec ‘ran away’ to avoid colliding with the release of the biggest film on earth, Avatar. With so much euphoria and curiosity surrounding the film, Avatar was expected to give a fascinating experience. Thankfully, it does! The film is not only a visual treat but is stunningly well made. A must watch for all those who love cinema!

The story of the movie: The year is 2154. A human corporation is assembled in a distant moon, Pandora, in order to colonize it and extract a precious mineral called unobtainium. Pandora is inhabited by strange looking people called Na’vi. The Na’vi are 9 feet in height, their skin is blue and they have tails too. Their way of life is primarily primitive but they reside in perfect harmony with the environment around them. The human researchers on Pandora, under Dr Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) manage to get the Na’vi DNA which enables any human to control and engineer Na’vi bodies of themselves which they called Avatars. SIX HINDI FILMS THIS FRIDAY! There would be no biggies for the next four weeks. The Ramzan month has commenced, during which a sizeable chunk of audience stay away from the theatres. Taking advantage of this, every year, a number of small and medium budget films hit the theatres in this holy month. The producers of such films hope that their film would do a good business in the absence of any biggie. Last year, ‘A Wednesday!’, 1920 and Welcome To Sajjanpur released during Ramzan and became hits.

And this year too, lots of small-budget films are all set to hit the screens. These films failed to get a proper release before the Ramzan as all weeks were booked by the biggies, owing to the producer’s strike which happened in summer. And this has resulted in a chaotic situation as around 20 films are planning to release in this month! 2 of them released last Friday-Shadow and Sikandar. In fact, tomorrow, as many as 6 films are all set to hit the theatres. These films are Daddy Cool, Kisaan, Quick Gun Murugun, Toss, Yeh Mera India and Love Khichdi!

Any layman can understand that it is indeed foolish for 6 films to release on a single day. And we should not forget the 2 Hollywood films that are also releasing tomorrow- Race To Witch Mountain and The Taking of Pelham 123. So this takes the number of films arriving tomorrow to 8! Madness!

But if observed, then producers don’t have much of a choice. If they won’t release their films now, then they won’t be able More >

Kiran Shah was the perfect choice to play the five-year-old Amitabh Bachchan in Balki’s Paa By Ashwini Deshmukh (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 07, 2009)

Amitabh Bachchan in Paa

Guess who will be seen portraying the five-year-old Amitabh Bachchan in Paa? It’s Kiran Shah better known as Little Kiran, the same actor who has been part of Hollywood films like The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in which he played Ginarrbrik, Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi in which he played Ewok and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

In the film, Amitabh Bachchan looks far older than he ought to at five because he plays a character who ages at an alarming rate as he suffers from progeria. Director Balki decided to get Little Kiran all the way from London to do justice to Amitabh’s character. Kiran is 53 years old but is only three feet tall, a perfect choice to play little Amitabh.

Balki said, “Kiran is an experienced actor with a great sensibility. He is someone who takes to prosthetics very well. I needed a face who could be easily pass off as Mr Bachchan. Kiran played the five-year-old Amitabh Bachchan very well. International make-up artistes Kristen Timble and Domnique have done wonders with the help of prosthetics.”

“Though Kiran is three feet tall, he’s not a dwarf. He walks like a normal child,” added Balki.

While Kiran has acted in several renowned films in Hollywood ever since the 1970s, Paa is his first Bollywood More >
