Movie Review: KRANTIVEER-THE REVOLUTION by TARAN ADARSH

Raising a strong voice against the system, corrupt netas, dishonest cops, fraudulent land sharks and the corrupt practices in general has been a fav subject of dream merchants in Bollywood. Mehul Kumar’s KRANTIVEER [Nana Patekar, Dimple Kapadia] is best remembered, among other things, for Nana’s fiery performance and his outburst in the finale, when he’s about to be hanged in public. I distinctly recall, the single screens [there weren't multiplexes then] reverberated with ceetees and taalis when Nana delivered those acidic lines.

KRANTIVEER – THE REVOLUTION remains faithful to the core issue. This time, it’s Nana and Dimple’s screen daughter Jahan who takes the onus of fighting the politicians, land sharks and corporate honchos who take the common man for a royal ride. That’s not all, Jahan even ‘awakens’ a harassed housewife who is assaulted in full public view by her errant husband. Quite a hothead!
KRANTIVEER worked for various reasons, but a strong reason was it being amongst the early films to raise a voice against injustice and malpractices. Post KRANTIVEER, there has been a barrage of films that have followed a similar path. That’s why KRANTIVEER – THE REVOLUTION, despite the right intentions, doesn’t stand out. However, the provocative dialogue and the reference to 26/11 do catch your attention in its second half.
The young daughter of the man responsible for the last revolution, Pratap [Nana Patekar], is now wielding the power of media as a fearless journalist. Roshni has inherited not only the courage and sting of her legendary father, but also the spirited lingo and the indomitable style.
Roshni acts as a pivot of the revolution and gets along her determined neighbour Vishal [Sameer Aftab] and college mates Uday [Harsh Rajput] and Goldie [Aditya Singh Rajput]. The story takes all of them on a mission to rid the present society of the evils, a revolution for cleaning the system.
While the plotline is easy to guess, the execution of a few sequences do make a difference. Veteran Mehul Kumar handles the plot like a complete expert, more so towards the second hour, which has some engrossing moments. Sachin-Jigar’s music is okay, with the birthday song being the pick of the lot.
Jahan delivers a fiery performance and remains true to her character. She does a wonderful job. Sameer Aftab is decent. Aditya and Harsh are okay. Govind Namdeo and Mukesh Tiwari enact their villainous parts with ease. Ashok Samarth stands out in the confrontation sequence after the interval. Farida Jalal [as Jahan's granny] is as usual. Hiten Paintal is competent. Aman Verma plays the lecherous corporate bigwig well. Ranjeet, Darshan Jariwala, Avtar Gill and Suhasini Mulay feature in brief roles.
On the whole, KRANTIVEER – THE REVOLUTION is an ordinary fare, which is for the hardcore masses.

KamaSutra model kills self for love
Jun 26th
A top model from the 1990s and a party circuit regular, Viveka Babajee, hanged herself in her Bandra flat. Who is the mysterious Gautam allegedly mentioned in her suicide note?
Top model Viveka Babajee, who featured in Kamasutra advertisements, hanged herself at her Bandra residence late on Friday evening. The 37-year-old model has left behind several notes, one of them naming a certain Gautam, sources said.
Viveka had a bitter break-up with writer-director Rohit Jugraj a year ago.
The hanging body was a horrific throwback to the Nafisa Joseph incident. Viveka was quite the toast of her time, bagging some of the most prestigious assignments on and off the ramp in her belle epoque, the 1990s – the saucy Kama sutra campaign is one that comes to mind.
The neighbours, on realising that she wasn’t answering the door bell, called the police. Her body was found hanging in her room at Continental Towers in the plush Rizvi Complex of Bandra.
It was 7 pm and even as the body was being sent to Cooper Hospital for a post-mortem, shock waves were already resonating through the fashion world. Some members of the fashion fraternity even began heading to the hospital to offer their respects.
Some friends, who spoke to us, claimed the model had been dating Gautam was only for a month. Amitabh Gupta, additional commissioner of police, western region, while refusing to divulge any details about this alleged Gautam, did however confirm the presence of a suicide note. “Investigations are on. Yes, we have found a suicide note.”
Viveka continued to work in fashion into the new century. Socialite Sharmila Khanna, who introduced her to the world of modeling the late ‘80s, said: “I found it strange that Viveka chose not to engage in modeling for the last four to five years. Nobody knew why.”
Viveka hailed from Mauritius, and owned an entertainment firm called Vibgyor Entertainment that organised events. She represented Mauritius for the Miss Universe in 1993, having won the title of Miss Mauritius.
In her later years, she carved a niche for herself as a fashion choreographer. In the new millennium she tried her luck with films, like many of her ilk, acting in a B-grader titled Yeh Kaisi Mohabbat (2002).
Not much was known of her personal life, save for the fact that she was engaged to Rohit Jugraj, the director of the ill-fated Ram Gopal Varma-presented brawn-flick James.
Film on 26/11 shows Kasab being hanged
May 4th
While the special court hearing the case against terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab has pronounced him guilty, his sentencing is due only tomorrow. Though the court’s verdict is awaited, a film set against the backdrop of the 26/11 terror strike has no second thoughts about the punishment – death by hanging.
In fact, the film (initially titled Total 10) called Ashok Chakra – A Tribute To Real Heroes has a climax portraying the protagonist Rajan Varma (who plays Kasab) screaming, “Hang me without the hood so that my nation (Pakistan) sees my plight and suffering, especially the youngsters.”

Confirming this, Rajan who has done a full nude scene in the film, added, “It was imperative that we changed the title of the film. Total 10 seemed to glorify terrorism. Our film focuses a lot on top cops who lost their lives that fateful night.”
As for the scene in which he is depicted naked, Rajan said, “In that scene I am wearing nothing. That is the time when my character is shown languishing in jail and has lost all interest in life. He later writes on the wall, ‘mere gunaah ki saza sirf maut hai’.”
With the rest of the country, Rajan too is hoping that Kasab is handed the harshest possible punishment by the court tomorrow. “He must be sentenced to death. He deserves absolutely no relief,” said Rajan.
If I get any thinner, I’ll be a hanger-Kareena Kapoor
Jan 30th

Kareena Kapoor talks about her figure(s) — size zero, 7-crore fee and the three films that’s going to keep her on the top
MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; January 30, 2010)
At beau Saif Ali Khan’s high-rise apartment in Mumbai, the lady-in-charge is Kareena Kapoor. Looking fresh as a daisy (without a dot of makeup) Bebo is internet browsing. The view from the 10th floor, an aesthetically done up home, is breath-taking. On second thoughts, so is Kareena. Back in the saddle after 3-Idiots, she has 2010 sorted out. She’s flying to Bangkok, then Paris, then Switzerland for her various commercial endorsements. Yes Queen Bee has renewed as many as 10 advertising contracts and will fly across the globe lending brand value to lifestyle and fashion products. As far as the movies go, she’s on a rampage too.
If Katrina Kaif issues ultimatums to film-makers like Prakash Jha, Abbas-Mustan and Farah Khan asking them to increase her role in the movies, Bebo does better. Trade sources say director Rohit Shetty who is making Golmaal-3, will have just her, and her alone as the female lead.
When asked if she’s the one who’s issued a dictat to the Golmaal-3 guys, Bebo says, “Of course not. I’m not the sort who tells film-makers what to do. The script is around this one girl. And yes, there are no other heroines in the film because that’s the way they wanted it.” She refuses to confirm her fee but she doesn’t dismiss the trade tattle on her being the highest paid Bollywood heroine either. Refraining from commenting on the Rs 7-crore price tag (a bit far-fetched honestly) that is being talked about, Bebo says, “God, I never asked to be in the papers everyday. If the media keeps writing about my price or even my size what can I do?” Flaunting her size zero measurements (that are still intact) she says, “I was amused to read somewhere that I had put on weight. If I get any thinner then I’ll be a hanger. Designers can hang their clothes on me.” As if on cue, boyfriend Saif who dashes in to get a cup of tea, says, “I’d like her to be slightly more rounded; but well, she knows best.” In three weeks time, Kareena will romance Bollywood’s biggest star Shah Rukh Khan in his home production RA 1. And there are rumours that she may team up with Hrithik Roshan in Karan Johar’s remake of Agneepath.
“Look I don’t want to dignify rumours,” she pleads. “Why talk of films that may or may not happen when there is so much already happening. I’m finishing the Hindi version of Step-Mom which is turning out to be fabulous. It’s a highly emotional film. And, with
Kajol and me there, you know it will have the required drama. Then, there’s Saif ’s Agent Vinod. With three major films happening, I don’t think I’ll be able to accommodate a fourth. But if I can, then I’ll be only too happy.” That then is Kareena for you. Avaricious to a fault; always hungry for bigger and better films. Somewhere she reminds you of being a female SRK. Everytime a newbie raises her head, Bebo plays demolition woman.
