Blame it on recession, blame it on male superstars who’ve decided to become choosy. Blame it on the reduced number of films Bollywood now makes. Whatever the reason, the fact is that three-quarters of the film industry’s beauties live life in the shadows. Filmmaker Priyadarshan, who gets a knock on his door from many of these actresses, says he feels helpless but there is “only those many actresses who I can accommodate in my movies… and though I’d ideally like to create roles for the number of actresses I meet, it isn’t possible”. A leading producer confirms that when he spread the word that he is auditioning for his new film starting this September, he got calls from a dozen actresses. “Such is the paucity of good projects that when you announce one film, at least 10 good actresses turn up for the same role,” says he.
Sanjay Bhattacharya, a film financier, says that since medium budget movies have become fewer, roles for the middle-order guys and girls have completely dried up. “We’re either making top-order projects done by the A-list actors like the five Khans (Aamir, Shah Rukh, Salman, Saif and Imran), Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn and Ranbir Kapoor, or we are making arthouse cinema like Udaan, Tere Bin Laden and Love Sex Aur Dhokha. The typical medium-budget film has become so rare.”
Whether it’s the himbos or the bimbos, with the exception of the top seven guys or girls in Bollywood, most of the others are sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring. Priyanka Kothari admits that after her beneficial stint with Ram Gopal Varma films — James, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, Sarkar and Agyaat — she is still to find the right break. She admits that post Agyaat she has only shot for regional cinema and a couple of commercials because she is still waiting for a good Bollywood film to materialise. And though many of the other actresses aren’t as candid as her, the fact is that life in the movies has become arduous for many.
It is no exaggeration that the girls who show up in pretty clothes at premieres, survive mainly on dance shows in smaller cities, ribbon cutting, commercial endorsements refused by the more-in-demand actresses, ramp-walking, catalogue shoots and appearances at events. What’s more is that unlike in other professions, where the wait invariably takes its toll on their patience, here in Bollywood, waiting for movies also takes its toll on their pockets. Just check out the list of expenses even the “in-waiting” actresses have to definitely spend on.
Salman Khan played trainer to debutante Sonakshi Sinha during the shooting of Dabangg
Salman Khan not only played the role of a corrupt cop in Dabangg but also played a trainer to Sonakshi Sinha, daughter of Shatrughan Sinha who makes her debut with the film.
Everyday during the shooting of the film in Panchgani, Salman used to make her walk all the way from the location to the hotel and take her to the gym regularly. Sonakshi is grateful to Salman for her new look and the weight she has lost.
Our source said, “The unit of Dabangg used to stay in a hotel in Panchgani while the location was a good one hour away from the hotel. Salman has been extremely caring towards Sonakshi and he was the one who inspired her to enter Bollywood. He was keen that Sonakshi lose some weight and that’s why after the shoot he used to make her walk all the way till the hotel. He also made her eat only salads and work out regularly.”
When contacted Sonakshi said, “Yes, he used to make me walk from the location to the hotel and sometimes from the hotel to the location. It was a good one hour walk up the ghat.
Salman is very particular about my fitness and he has been responsible for losing weight and getting into the films in the first place.
He took over as my trainer and after shooting he used to make me do weights or play tennis. He shifted his gym equipment there so that we could work out together.”
Sonakshi adds, “It was not that I was lazy or something but I always need someone to motivate me. Salman did that and we used to do weights together. He guided me to concentrate on my legs during workout and we also did quite a few abs as well.”
Sonakshi finally said, “I used to eat only salads as it is genetic for me to gain weight, but for him he used to eat everything. During the lunch breaks, he won’t allow me to come near him when he ate all the yummy food. I stuck to my salads, but I still need to work harder.” Well, glamour is back-breaking work, honey!
Thanks to an over-exhaustive workout regime, John Abraham is suffering from an acute muscle malfunction; has been cautioned
John Abraham’s taut, gleaming, sun-tanned torso in a pair of bright yellow trunks, against a deep blue sea, is an image that was etched on our minds for long. What’s taken perhaps as a given is the actor’s relentless hard work that has paid off and given him a body one could only dream of.
Turns out, there is a flip side to the coin. Anything done in excess always has its own ramifications. John is now bearing the brunt of working out too hard and is suffering from acute muscle malfunction; exerting his body any further in the gymnasium could cause neurological damage as warned by his doctors.
Our source said, “John Abraham has been asked by doctors to stay away from his gym. His excessive workout sessions have taken a huge toll on his body. Now, he is suffering from something called acute muscle fatigue. For the last month and a half, John has been exercising to prepare for his role in Vipul Shah’s remake of Tamil film Khakha Khakha to be directed by Nishikant Kamat. John’s workout sessions have lasted as long as three to four hours every single day. The film needs him to beef up so he has a body that has not been seen on celluloid till date.”
The situation gets far more twisted here. John’s prior commitment to Dostana 2 expects him to have a lean body. Our source adds, “This is why John has been following two regimes under two different trainers. Doctors have now asked him to completely stop exercising because his body is reduced to a state where it can’t possibly take any more of it.”
John doesn’t believe in using any artificial supplements and wants to build his body the hard way, we are told. But nothing comes without a price. “An over-exhaustive exercise regime has impacted John. He can’t work out at all now as this could also affect his brain or his neurological system,” adds our source.
When contacted, John confirmed the news and said, “My doctor has asked me to take it easy and not go to the gym. My muscles can’t take the stress anymore; they need rest.” A lesson hard learnt John but here’s wishing you a speedy recovery.
Meanwhile, there is word that the remake of Khakha Khakha has been postponed. Get well soon, John.
While shooting for Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara, Katrina Kaif accidentally sprained her neck
Shooting away from home has its ups and downs. The team working on Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara discovered this recently. While rains have hampered work on several occasions since the unit’s arrival in Spain earlier this month, it now seems there are other hurdles awaiting the crew.
On Monday during a session in the gym the film’s leading lady Katrina Kaif sprained her neck. Though she tried hard to sound brave about the mishap it was obvious she was in great pain.
Wincing and hardly able to talk Katrina said, “I don’t know how it happened. I’ve been spending more time than usual in the gym since there’s no other leisure activity here. Sometime during my session in the gym on Monday, I twisted my neck. Now I can’t move it either left or right.”
There was naturally a wave of concern among the cast and crew. Everyone was wondering if she would be able to shoot since she has plenty of rugged outdoor action sequences to perform.
Says the actress, “No matter how, I have to keep shooting. We can’t afford to lose time. Zoya is a very accommodating director. But I can’t take advantage of her niceness.”
In fact Zoya is Katrina’s second female director after Farah Khan (Tees Maar Khan), who Katrina is working with. While Katrina didn’t quite hit it off with Farah, Zoya and she are quite friendly.
“And that’s why I feel even more responsible for this project. I can’t let a sprained neck obstruct the shooting,” adds a brave Katrina.
But will Katrina be able to perform a tough underwater sequence and motorbike-riding one with a severely stiffened neck? “I can’t turn my neck; I can only look straight. But in any case, I’m supposed to be highly focused on my career,” quips Katrina.
Actor Emraan Hashmi has bought a house for himself in Goa, his favourite place in the world. No, he is not shifting his base from Mumbai, but is making sure that his leisure time is well spent.
The actor has bought himself a four storey, fully furnished penthouse in Goa. The house has all the luxuries like a gym, a swimming pool, a private garden and a terrace.
The best part of the place is the unrestricted view of the sea.
Ready to party Emraan said, “Yes I have purchased a house in Goa. Whenever I get a week or more off from shoot, I’ll fly down to Goa and unwind there. I will get the possession of the property by the end of this year.
So I guess New Year’s celebration will be with family and friends in Goa.”

Kangna Ranaut insists weight gain is responsible for her fuller figure
Thin girls of the world unite; you have nothing to lose but your, well, thinness. According to Kangna Ranaut, her new curves are not the result of anything surgical but only the outcome of having put on seven kilos overall.
Reacting to our photo feature Full and Final in yesterday’s issue, Kangna clarified, “Not only my breasts but everything has miraculously expanded as I have gained seven kilos. I plan to lose all of it though people actually like me fuller and everyone has been complimenting me though I think it makes me look older than I am.”
On second thoughts, she added, “It’s crazy, but every single person loves me fat. And honestly, I secretly like it too which is probably why I haven’t started gym and yoga yet. But really, on screen, my hollow cheeks look better and in fact, it is important they be that way.”
Some months ago, Kangna had dismissed her fuller lips as a result of eating prawns. Now her obvious enhancements are part of weight gain. If it is the additional seven kilos that are responsible, obviously most of the seven have gone to one part of her anatomy only.
Nutritionist Miloni Shah of the Centre for Obesity and Diabetes Support says it’s hard to put on weight in one specific area. One usually puts on weight all over the body and some people do have hereditary weaknesses such as thighs, hips or the mid-riff. Weight specifically on the chest is usually a result of hormonal changes along with a fatty diet. It could also be because of side effects of medicines such as steroids.
Too much exercise and anti-baldness pills have reduced model-actor Aryan Vaid to a shadow of himself. His testosterone levels have dropped drastically, leading to constant fatigue and loss of energy. he shares his horror story…
In a city where vanity often precedes all other virtues, here is a cautionary tale for those for whom the mirror dominates all other concerns.
Thirty-five-year-old Aryan Vaid, who started his career by winning the hunky Mr. India pageant in 2000, has admitted to Mumbai Mirror that “abusing his body” with a hair-loss pill and exhaustive two-and-a-half hour workouts have cost him his virility. Vaid’s testosterone levels have dipped alarmingly and his energy levels have been low for the last several months.
He realised the gravity of the situation only a few weeks ago. “My testosterone levels have come down. They are hinging on the borderline now. I am paying the price for abusing my body,” admitted Vaid.
“I used to hit the gym for nearly two-and-a-half hours every day. I used to get very tired but I never realised where I was heading. My body started releasing cortisol, one of the two parts of the adrenal gland. This began neutering my testosterone levels. I did not pay much attention to this, until I started getting symptoms associated with high blood pressure.”
In addition, an anti-balding drug has played havoc with Vaid’s system. “There was some hair fall in the front, on the right side. I started taking a drug, which I thought would prevent hair loss.
It worked as well, but my doctors said that this drug too was one of the reasons why my testosterone levels dropped,” he said.
When contacted, sexologist Rajan Bhonsle confirmed the potential adverse effects of too much exercise. “Many men who are into weight-lifting wear extremely tight underwear during their workout. That severely affects testosterone levels. Due to rise in body temperature, the testosterone production gets affected leading to loss of desire, low libido and in some cases erectile dysfunction.”
He added: “If the person works out unwillingly (or demands way too much from his body), the stress factor comes in causing cortisol production. And this cortisol dampens the effect of testosterone.”
Sexologist Mahendra Watsa corroborated the ill-effects of magic anti-balding pills. “Low testosterone in men is not so common. But yes, drugs associated with hair-fall prevention are often known to directly lead to erectile dysfunction.”
Further narcissistic indulgence on Vaid’s part led to a low-fat diet, the third culprit in his being landed with this predicament. “I was advised that I need a low-fat diet if I wanted a super body. I’ve been told that this decreased my testosterone levels further.”
How did he find out the exact problem? “When I met with my doctor, he advised me to get a few tests done. My iron count was abysmally high. A few other tests were then advised, which brought out the shocking change in my system,” Vaid said. “I am not taking any medication as yet. I have been told by my doctors to take it easy and take ample rest. I haven’t gone in for any supplements yet.”
As per further medical advice, Vaid has cut down on his workout schedule. “Now, I work out just twice/thrice a week for only an hour per session. I’ve started going for long walks, which I do for at least an hour every day.
And I have to be very particular with what I eat. I have to consume a lot of garlic and peanuts, which should do the trick hopefully,” he concludes.
Fitness instructor Satyadev Chourasiya, who trained Aamir Khan for Ghajini and is now working with Hrithik Roshan for Riding With The Bulls, said: “Testosterone levels can come down by vigorous workouts only if you don’t take 5-6 meals per day. Your breakfast can be heavy but your dinner has to be moderated. Anybody whose testosterone levels have gone down by too much exercise has apparently erred on his diet.”
So is this story a lesson to all the aspiring and established models and actors? “Why only models and actors?” Aryan shot back. “It is an eye-opener to every person in this world. How vanity can affect health.”

We have always heard of the world famous adage ‘Since God cannot be everywhere, He created Mothers’. The latest issue of Hello! seems to personify this saying with their cover story.
You heard it right, for the fact that the latest issue of Hello! has none other than Bollywood’s Greek God Hrithik Roshan and his mother dearest Pinky Roshan. Talking about his Mummy, Hrithik, the son, says, “My mother helped shape my perspective of the world to a great extent. She has great strength and resilience, and taught me a lot about women and respect for them. She has the heart of a child you know; she’s basically a little girl. And I see that everyday, all the time.” While on her part, mommy dearest says (read ‘reveals’), “Once Hrithik graduated from Tinkle comics, he went onto read TIME magazine. Even now, though he’s so busy, he’ll still come into my room and pick up a few books. We share a gym, we workout, we listen to music … yes… I enjoy dancing too.”
Well, that’s Hrithik and his mother Pinky for you…on the special occasion of Mother’s Day! We do suggest that you may need to keep a few tissues ready for this interview is bound to stir your emotions big time! After all, not everyday is a Mother’s Day and not every woman is Pinky Roshan… and not every son is Hrithik! Atta’ boy… this one!
Hrithik Roshan was used to being supremely fit – until he signed Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish. He was under strict orders to look less muscular and sport some weight around his midriff. Now that the shoot is complete, Hrithik is dying to get back to his fit, muscular self.
His next film, too, demands that put on five kilos, but he has to accumulate the weight in terms of muscle mass. So Hrithik is determined to look fit and his sheer willpower will see him through punishing workouts and diet. A thorough professional, he wants to look the part for Zoya Akhtar’s Running with the Bulls.
The actor is going through hardcore gym training for three hours every day in his new gym on the terrace of his Juhu residence (Palazzio, Road No 12) under the guidance of his fitness trainer Satyajit Chourasia. Until recently, he was training for about an hour every day. “We have two sessions every day. Hrithik is increasing his muscle mass,” says Satyajit.
Naturally, Hrithik has to adhere to a lot of dos and don’ts as far as his diet is concerned. The star may enjoy his drink, but now he has gone off alcohol. “Yes, no alcohol for Hrithik now. However, I don’t mind if he has an occasional drink. He eats chicken and fish every day. And, the carbohydrate intake post-evening ranges from low to nil.”
Hrithik is eating about 12 eggs every day. “Four eggs in the morning, four in the afternoon and four in the evening/night. It’s not easy, but this man is a very committed actor,” says the trainer.
“Results are expected in two months,” concluded Satya. Well, we won’t be surprised if Hrithik meets the deadline. We remember how he put himself through a strict regime and decreased his waistline from 32 inches to 28 for an ad in April 2009.
Karan Johar had a tough day today as he got a number of annoying calls, courtesy Hrithik Roshan. Apparently, yesterday, Hrithik revealed on Twitter that he calls Karan “Pappu”. This is Hrithik’s affectionate nickname for Karan. However, after this revelation, everyone who called or texted the director, addressed him as Pappu.
Karan has been getting calls since morning and is irritated with Hrithik talking about his pet name in public.
Hrithik has been calling him Pappu for ages as Karan was fat and round. However the nickname was a well kept secret till Thursday night.
Obviously Karan is far from amused.
Kangna’s new home comes with terrace, swimming pool and gym attached
Looks like it’s the season to either book, buy or move into new residences. Evidently something is right somewhere with the finances in the film industry.
We have a story about Vidya Balan buying a four-bedroom apartment at Khar and now comes the news that Kangna Ranaut has just purchased her dream home in an under-construction building at Bandra.
The house has everything that Kangna needs. It is a triplex penthouse with a living room, guest bedroom, kitchen and terrace on the first level, three bedrooms on the second and the master bedroom, a swimming pool and gym on the third. Additionally her home will have a private lift so that her friends can party or visit without disturbing the rest of the household.
Kangna has been looking for a bigger house so that she could have her parents stay with her. They have a huge house in Manali and Kangna was keen to be able to house them in a spacious apartment in Mumbai.
She has also purchased three parking spaces to go with the apartment, and though she declines to go into details of her new home which is still in the nascent stage, she is obviously thrilled to be able to provide the best for her parents.
