How being a starlet, struggling actor not an easy-n-’cheap’ task in Bollywood
1Fame and the first big break come at a price. Here’s looking at how much starlets spend on keeping up with appearances
Soumyadipta Banerjee (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 15, 2013)
In a business that is all about appearances, keeping up with it comes at a cost. Other than those who are already in the big league, peripheral actors end up spending a lot more on convincing the world that they ‘belong,’ than what the odd film assignment can afford.
Take this Delhi girl – who acted in a film with a certain Khan and then disappeared – daughter of a CEO of one of the largest FMCG companies. Hopeful that he will be able to fund her Bollywood dreams, he sent her off to Mumbai. Problems arose when she started spending a lot more than what he earned. “I still remember the phone call from my father. He wanted to know how come I had spent Rs 10 lakh in a month when I was living alone. I just couldn’t explain to him that I had to spend at least that much as a struggling actress,” she says.
It is a cut-throat world where there is no mercy for those who cannot spend. A stylist who works with designers to procure dresses for struggling starlets, says: “Some girls approach me to rent a dress and when I ask for 10 grand, which is five per cent of the cost of the dress, they look at me as though they want to kill me. Why come here and struggle honey if you cannot afford to rent a dress? Bollywood is no more a middle-class dream, one should know now.”

Inflict maximum harm on your attacker with minimum effort-Gul Panag
0Gul Panag emphasises on the need for women to get proactive about their own safety
Jayoti Soor (DNA; January 14, 2013)
Actress Gul Panag is outraged that lack of retributive action has created a social scenario where women no longer feel safe. Hence, she wholeheartedly supports the ongoing DNA Women’s Self Defence Camp. “This is a great initiative for women to prepare themselves for any eventuality. And it will also make men ashamed that women can no longer count on them for security or protection,” she says.
Gul, who comes from an army background, recalls that she was trained in the basics of self defence by her father. But it also led to a false sense of security. “In the cantonment area, I would got out for my runs after sunset as the jawans fear the threat of immediate action. But, in the outside world, the realities are reversed,” she says. Gul adds that people break the law with impunity in our country as they know they can get away with it. So, in such a scenario a woman needs to always be prepared and such self defence camps act like a confidence-booster, she feels.
The actress remembers the time when she lived in Delhi and her husband, whom she was dating at that time, would always ensure that she got home safely. “I was reckless when I was younger. I used to drive from Vasant Kunj to Noida where my boyfriend lived and he would always follow me back home to ensure I had reached home safely. I always argued with him that he need not take such pains,” she says. The More >
Not uncomfortable with kissing or intimate scenes-Gul Panag
0Gul Panag and director Rajat Kapoor hold forth on their upcoming film Fatso!
Upala KBR (BOMBAY TIMES; May 4, 2012)
A love story that makes you want to cry but has you laughing — that’s what award-winning director Rajat Kapoor’s Fatso! is about. Actors Gul Panag and Purab Kohli have several intimate scenes, but that’s not all there is to the film.
Produced by Pritish Nandy Communications and Daily Multimedia, Fatso! is about four friends played by Purab, Gul, Neil Bhoopalam and Ranvir Shorey (who plays the title role).
CHARMED BY THE STORY Revealing that she almost didn’t sign the film, Gul says, “I am not a romantic person. I don’t watch or like to act in love stories, but then I heard the story and was charmed by its twists and turns. It’s also extremely flattering to be the centre of attraction, where three men find themselves in love with the same girl!”
She justifies the lovey-dovey moments saying, “It’s only in the first few minutes of the film and is very critical as it takes the story forward. Purab and I are in the throes of love and about to get married. The script needed these scenes and it’s what peps the film up. Besides, I’m not uncomfortable with kissing or doing intimate scenes. It’s part of my job and I enjoy every bit of it.”
DELIGHTFUL FILM Says Rajat, “This might be the most commercial film I’ve done yet. It is another foray into the idea of identity. This script was with me for three years. The making of the film was great fun and has a mix of old More >
Fenil’s Bollywood Talk # 202
0INTERESTING LINE UP OF FILMS THIS WEEKEND!
This is going to be one of the most crowded Fridays of the week! There are 3 Hollywood releases as well as 3 Bollywood releases tomorrow! My views on the significant films out of these:
JANNAT 2: Surely the biggest film of the week! The film is the second part of the Jannat franchise whose first part was a roaring success at the box office. While Jannat was about betting and match fixing, Jannat 2 deals with illegal arms trade. Emraan Hashmi plays a bindass character called Sonu Dilli KKC (Kutti Kameeni Cheez), a name which has been well publicized and has caught on big time! The film marks the debut of Esha Gupta who seems to have impressed the Bhatts so much that they signed her for Raaz 3 as well and now even Prakash Jha signed her for his next, Chakravyuh! The film also stars the talented Randeep Hooda who plays a very interesting character in the film. As with any Bhatt product, music of Jannat 2 has been loved. The film is expected to open huge since Emraan’s popularity has grown a lot, more so after the success of Murder 2 and The Dirty Picture. A bad response can make matters worse though! Let’s hope Sonu Dilli KKC manages to entertain!
FATSO: Directed by Rajat Kapoor, Fatso stars Ranvir Shorey as the ‘Fatso’ and he gained almost 18 kgs for the role. Purab Kohli, Gul Panag and Brijendra Kala are the other actors in the film. The film has an interesting premise – the ‘department of death’ makes an error and the repercussions More >
Gul Panag gets one step closer to getting a pilot’s license
0By Urmimala Banerjee (MID-DAY; April 18, 2012)
Like Gul Panag, there have been other Bollywood actresses too who have taken a fancy to heavy machines (read bikes). But the actress has gone one step ahead and has just wrapped up the second schedule of her exam to get a pilot’s license.
Gul says, “I love planes. And it’s been my dream to be able to pilot one on my own. I am so glad I’m finally getting down to getting my licence.” For those who are unaware, Gul always makes an effort to keep abreast of what’s happening in the field of aviation.
The set of exams that Gul just appeared for were a lot tougher than the first one, but the lady has fared well. She says, “My basics are very strong. These exams test you on topics like aircrafts, flying, principles of aviation.” As of now, the lady has taken a break for her upcoming film, but will soon take out time for the next level of tests.
Own a plane Gul in the meanwhile maintains that flying is just her hobby. “I always wanted to learn flying, and now I have the time and the money for it. I hope to have my own plane too someday. My dream is to fly around the world, which will be a five month-long trip.”
The actor’s husband, Rishi Attari is also a pilot. But according to Gul, the two unfortunately can’t enjoy a flight together. “He can’t fly the kind of aircrafts I do. He flies the commercial ones.” Talking about flying on celluloid, Gul feels that Top Gun is the best film to be ever made on flying. “It is a classic for plane More >
Gym with celeb clientele sealed
0Following allegations of irregularities, including non-payment of nearly Rs 30 crore in dues, cops seal a part of Andheri’s True Fitness gym; clientele left in the lurch
By Mauli Singh and Samarth Moray (MID-DAY; March 10, 2012)
It would be in the fitness of things to say that patrons of Andheri’s True Fitness gym are a worried lot these days.
The swank outfit that caters to dozens of celebrities was partly sealed on Monday by the Bangur Nagar police pending inquiry into ‘serious irregularities’ in the establishment’s operations.
A section of the gym’s lower floor was caulked on the basis of an order by the Borivli Metropolitan Court.
The fitness centre, which occupies the third and fourth floors of Crystal Point Mall, has over 9,000 members and a total floor space of over 40,000 sq ft.
The police acted on a private complaint lodged by Harsh Kaushal Corporation through its director Kaushal Doshi. The corporation owns the mall where the gym is located.
The complaint was made on December 17, 2011 in the Borivli court, which then directed Bangur Nagar police to investigate, a process that began on January 3.
A separate case pending appeal in the High Court refers to the crores of rupees due from True Fitness to Harsh Kaushal Corporation.

Gul’s ‘super cool’ honeymoon
0MUMBAI MIRROR; March 30, 2011
Gul Panag is on her honeymoon with hubby in Finland.
And just to make the others, who are huffing and puffing in the sweltering heat of the subcontinent, jealous, she posted some gorgeous pictures of snow clad mountains on her Twitter page.
Though she does look like one of the extras in the Suniel Shetty number ‘Shaher ki ladki’ with the helmet on, we couldn’t deny one fact this babe is having a helluva time out there!
Gul’s baraat vrooms on Enfield bikes
0Bollywood actress and former Miss India Gul Panag tied the knot with her longtime friend Rishi Attari in this Haryana town Sunday. The Anand Karaj (wedding ceremony) was performed at a gurudwara here, followed by a reception at a hotel in Sector 5 in Panchkula, around 10 km from Chandigarh.
Gul Panag, well known for her adventurous lifestyle and tomboyish attitude, chose an unique way to reach the reception venue after the weding ceremony. Rishi arrived on a Royal Enfield motorcycle, with Gul sitting in the sidecar.
The marriage procession (baraat) consisted of riders on over 20 Enfield motorcycles, some of which were being driven by women. Panag, 32, is also an expert in riding bikes, as was seen in her recent film ‘Turning 30′.
The marriage party was a personal affair with only family friends and selected guests being invited. Rishi works as a pilot in a private airline. He belongs to an Amritsar-based family and is now settled in New Delhi.
Gul Panag, daughter of a retired lieutenant general, won the Miss India title in 1999 and was also crowned Miss Beautiful Smile at the same pageant.

Bollywood skips Gul’s wedding!
0Prithwish Ganguly (BOMBAY TIMES; March 14, 2011) Gul Panag got married to her long time boyfriend Rishi Attari yesterday in a gurudwara in Chandigarh. The guestlist was restricted to close friends and family. Few of her costars who were invited, like Purab Kohli and Eesha Kopikkar could not make it due to work commitments. Many others in B-Town weren’t even aware of the wedding.
The low-profile actress did not want any tamasha of shutterbugs, so she kept the wedding a secret. She will have a small reception in Mumbai later, for people from the film fraternity. The honeymoon destination is also being kept under wraps. Rishi and Gul have known each other for 11 years. BT spoke to her co-actors. Shreyas Talpade (Dor) said, “I wish her the very best and a rocking married life.” Abhay Deol (Manorama Six Feet Under) conveyed his best wishes to the couple. Arbaaz Khan (Hello) confirmed he wasn’t going to Chandigarh. Riteish Deshmukh (Rann) wasn’t even aware she was tying the knot. He asked surprised, “Is she getting married?”
