Giaa Manek, best known as TV’s Gopi bahu, is set to play the central character in the Indian version of the popular American fantasy sitcom, I Dream Of Jeannie (IDOJ). “Yes, I am playing Jeannie in SAB TV’s upcoming show Jeannie Aur Juju and I think I am the right person for the role,” says Giaa adding, “So far, I’ve played the role of a docile bahu and have participated in a dance reality show. I am now excited about this fun role, which fits me like a glove. The role guarantees to transfer viewers from mundane lives to another world which is unreal. I hope the show works. I consider myself lucky that I have got the best from all the channels.”

Created and produced by legendary author Sidney Sheldon, IDOJ hit Indian television in the 90s. In its original avatar, it featured Barbara Eden as Jeannie and Larry Hagman as Captain Tony Nelson. In the Indian version, Captain Tony’s role will be played by Ali Asgar. Anooj Kapoor, EVP and Business Head of the channel, told BT, “With Giaa in the show, we’re sure to attract a huge audience as she has a big fan following. The show will have special effects and tricks that the Jeannie performs. It is an uncommon genre on Indian television and the audience will surely enjoy the novelty we are providing them with.”

In fact, in the initial stages everyone agreed and I even sent out the dates I require for the Jhalak… shoots, which was accepted. I don’t know why there was a change of heart.

Weren’t you contractually bound? This is a regular practice where fiction stars perform in non-fiction shows, award ceremonies and events. My contract was to be with the show exclusively for 25 days and I was free to do whatever I wanted in the balance five to six days. I chose to pursue my passion for dancing and I have always dreamt of being a part of Jhalak…

The channel says they threw you out of the show for your unprofessional behaviour, but you are claiming that you sent them your resignation first? After the production house harassed me I was left with no choice but to tell them that I was quitting their show. And all this, after I assured them of my More >
