Sanjay Dutt is taking no chances. In Lamhaa, there is a scene where Anupam Kher (playing a character based on separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani who is known for his volatile dialogue) sarcastically refers to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. This when lashing out at the media for focusing on Bollywood glamour while Kashmir burned. Anupam’s character says, “When Aishwarya Rai is unable to see the moon it makes news. But why doesn’t the media report the plight of those thousands of Kashmiri wives who haven’t seen their husbands for years?” Director Rahul Dholakia, aware that Anupam is close to the Bachchan parivaar, feared a Big B backlash to this dialogue. So Dutt took the trailer of Lamhaa to the Bachchans and sought their approval for this reference against their bahu. A relieved Dholakia said, “Mr Bachchan understood that Aishwarya’s reference is a metaphor for glamour and celebrity. Also, that dialogue was not born out of thin air. A Kashmiri separatist leader had actually said those words.”
Another famous cricketer-film actress relationship goes for a toss
Confirming the break-up, a friend of Geeta’s says, “Harbhajan called off the relationship. He is now going around telling friends that he is looking for a new girlfriend.”
However, we hear, they still talk to each other. “There is no animosity at all. It’s just that they are no more a couple. They began to have differences, shortly after the IPL. The incompatibility levels amassed to irreconcilable proportions. Things spiralled out of hand.”
Geeta is feeling low but putting up a brave front. After all, she was very attached to Harbhajan, supporting him and cheering for him lustily on the ground in the many matches he played. “She really wanted this relationship to work. A lot of her friends in the industry want to ask her why this happened, and so suddenly. However, it would be very mean to ask her so soon.”
Standing up for Geeta, her friend adds, “She will now concentrate on her career. She has been getting a lot of offers for films. She should have realized that most relationships in the glamour world fail.”
When contacted, Geeta simply said, “No comments.”
Oh, it’s a Duck!

…it’s been a chequered journey for Manoj Bajpayee. But even as he savours his latest success, the actor tells Lekha Menon, his priorities remain unchanged
The star trappings seem to be in place. A well-appointed, ninth-floor apartment in a Lokhandwala high-rise. Man Fridays to slap the greasepaint and set things in order for a shoot.
And a star who’s agreed for an interview just after stepping off the plane post a whirlwind promotional drive. But Manoj Bajpayee is quick to point out that vanity is not one of his defining traits. “Hey, don’t go by the house,” he laughs. “I am as rooted as one can be. I still don’t relate to glamour.”
Rooted he may be, but for now Manoj can fly high on the Raajneeti wave. The gripping yet flawed take on Hindi heartland politics might have got mixed reviews with its Mahabharata-meets-Godfather masala mix, but is a certified blockbuster.
“Even we are surprised by the reaction,” says Manoj, checking out the congratulatory smses pouring in, the relief of being part of a hit, evident. “I never thought I’d get a character that would surpass Satya’s Bhiku Mhatre. But this one (of Veerendra Pratap aka Duryodhan) has proved to be just that. Now I can boast of two characters that have left an indelible mark.”
Indeed, as many observers have commented, the brilliance of Bhikhu Mhatre ironically proved to be Manoj’s undoing for it was such a tough act to follow. Add to it a clutch of box office duds that did little justice to his talent. But Manoj disagrees. “I’ve not had too many hits. But every actor goes through that patch. Perhaps it’s only Aamir who gives regular blockbusters. But now even I have two of them!” he chuckles, “Such hits are rare for my kind of actor.” His kind of actor? “Those who are known more for their performance,” he says elaborating how some of his good films - 1971, Swami, Acid Factory etc - went unnoticed because of lack of promotion.

Thankfully, the tide seems to have turned for the better. For one, two of his long-pending films including Chittagong (based on the Chittagong uprising which Junior B is reprising in another film) is getting released.
Secondly, there is the renewed audience interest in him. “Yes, now I have two super-hit dialogues. First, ‘Mumbai ka raja kaun…’ from Satya and now ‘Karara jawab…’ that are people are raving about,” he grins.
Does this mean he will now be more careful of the films he signs? “Will that guarantee I will never have a flop?” he counters. “I have done many small films…but yes, maybe now I will think twice about doing a small film for it’s heartbreaking when you work so hard and a movie doesn’t get released,” he says.
Box office vagaries apart, Manoj insists the frills do not attract him. “I pat my back for a 16-year-old journey,” he says, “Hailing from theatre, I never even expected to reach this far. What gives me a kick is to be part of films that have a shelf-life,” he says. “At least I’ve achieved that with Satya, Road, Aks, Pinjar, Kaun, Zubeida etc.”
And he pins down this Zen-like approach in an industry that worships commercial success to his attitude towards life itself. “For me, life’s about sitting with my friends and abusing each other. Visiting Bihar or Delhi. It’s also about going to some small joint to eat Chicken Masala or visiting a friend’s house to make mutton…As for hits and flops, it’s just wise to enjoy the good times as long as they last.”
A fit Priyanka Chopra replaces Akshay kumar as the brand new host of reality show Fear Factor
Akshay Kumar, over the two seasons of Fear Factor, made his mark as the charming host who dealt with the competing girls firmly. Replacing someone as fit and macho as Akshay was not an easy task, but now Priyanka Chopra takes on the mantle of the host for the third season. She will guide and goad 13 cricketers, who will be at her beck and call on the show. This also marks her small screen debut.
A source said, “The channel wanted a new face. That’s when someone suggested Priyanka’s name. Talks have been going on for some time and now it has been made official. Negotiations are also on to rope in some top cricketers for the show. Priyanka was selected as she has made her mark in action roles in films like Don and Drona and is probably one of the fittest actresses in Bollywood today.”
The need for a new host was precipitated after the format of the show was changed. Perhaps the producers of the show hope Priyanka’s chemistry with the cricketers will work for the show. Confirming the development, Ashvini Yardi, the programming head of the channel said, “When you combine Priyanka’s glamour, mass-appeal and athleticism with the energy and adrenaline of the cricketers, you get the perfect equation for a show like Fear Factor.
Akshay took this show to great heights with his inimitable style. So far you people had seen 13 haseenayein with ek khiladi. This season, get ready to witness 13 cricketing khiladis and ek haseena.”
Priyanka, of course, is delighted to take up the challenge. She said, “The show fits in perfectly with my personality. I have been a huge fan of Fear Factor and thoroughly enjoy watching it. I am looking forward to my innings on television. It’s exciting to be a part of a concept which is unique and feature some of the biggest names in cricket.”
Arjun Rampal and Mehr Jessia’s company lands contract to arrange a staggering 55 fashion shows and parties for the IPL’s third season
Arjun Rampal and Mehr Jessia will be in the midst of all the excitement at the IPL, which kicks off today. Their company will be in charge of the fashion shows and the parties that will be held after every match. Bollywood already has a strong presence at the IPL, and now fashion adds that extra touch of glamour to the event.
The idea of hosting the fashion shows and the parties was the brainchild of Mehr and IPL Chairman Lalit Modi. Confirming this, Mehr told Mumbai Mirror, “There will be 55 fashion shows and 55 parties in all.”
When asked if a party after every match is recommended in the midst of an important tournament like IPL, Mehr said, “You don’t have to drink to be at a party. Besides, it would just bring all the cricketers under one roof. When we saw some of the matches in the first season, we had observed that the cricketers wanted to be together every evening. So what can be a better idea than this?”
“Another interesting aspect is that every team will have a specific ambience. The host of the party will be the team in whose city the match is played. Like if KKR is playing Mumbai Indians in Mumbai, then Mumbai Indians will be the hosts,” added Mehr.
Unwilling to disclose the names of the models who will participate in the fashion shows, Mehr said, “We will have all the top fashion designers – Shantanu & Nikhil, Manish Malhotra, Rocky S, Anamika Khanna, to name just a few.”
Will Arjun and Mehr travel to every venue, we asked? “That won’t be possible because at times there are two matches on a given day. There is no commitment on that. But we promise everybody a gala time.”

If there is heaven on earth it is here, it is here, it is here. And if at all, there is any heavenly body, it is her, it is her, it is her! We are indeed talking about the ‘beauty-licious’ Lara Dutta, who is simply giving the models and actress and everyone alike, a mega marathon run for their money. And it is this very same chic who is all set to set the book stores afire as she is the cover girl for Vogue magazine for this month.
Lara can be accused of giving everyone (esp. men) a stiff neck as they just cannot help turning their heads, only to have a mere glance of this angelic beauty. Such is the impact of this actress, who, in this issue, talks about her obsession with shoes, her most defining fashion moment, shopping list for the season, her shopping secrets (yes…she has revealed them!), her definition of glamour, her style statement, her take on shopping therapy …to name a few…phew! Full marks to the fotog for presenting Lara like never before. Looking at the pictures, one just feels confused thinking whether the clothes and the accessories are complementing Lara or is it the other way round. Surely an interesting edition for all Lara fans.
The actor bowled over the crowd in Bihar when she asked them ‘ka haal ba Patna’
Filmmaker Prakash Jha launched TV channel Morya last week with a lot of glitz and glamour. His Raajneeti actors, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpai and Katrina Kaif, were present for the launch in Patna along with Bhojpuri stars Ravi Kishan and Manoj Tiwari. Jha requested Katrina to speak in Bhojpuri, the local language.
A source said, “Considering that Katrina speaks Hindi with difficulty, she had goose bumps when she was asked to speak in Bhojpuri. However, Jha gave her three tutors – Manoj Tiwari, Ravi Kishan and Manoj Bajpai – all of whom can speak the language with great ease. Katrina was willing to learn. However, they could manage to teach her only one line as it was difficult for her to understand.”
Confirming the incident, Manoj Tiwari said, “It was quite funny. Initially, Katrina was very excited about it, so the three of us (Ravi Kishan, Manoj Bajpai and him) coached her to address the crowd with ‘Ka haal ba Patna’. She diligently wrote it down on a piece of paper and mugged it.
However, instead of saying ‘haal ba’, she kept on repeating ‘halba’, which sounded like ‘halwa’. Bajpai and Ravi Kishan burst out laughing at this and kept pulling her leg. That’s when we explained to her the difference between halwa, a sweet and ‘haal ba’, meaning how are you. Although Katrina took time to learn the line, she repeated it quite confidently on the dais. The crowd went berserk on hearing her. In fact we were all impressed with Katrina’s determination and persistence.”

Maneesh Sharma, Associate Director of the SRK starrer Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, which created box office history for both Yash Raj Films and Shah Rukh Khan, has been entrusted with directing the next YRF project.

The Indian Premier League’s tie-up with the television channel Colors promises to have much greater repercussions than outwardly visible.
Speaking exclusively to us during the press conference to announce the IPL-Colors tie-up, Colors’ CEO Rajesh Kamat revealed plans of an IPL-Colors awards night on April 23 bringing together the biggest names in the cricketing and film world.
Says Kamat, “So far we’ve seen glamor at awards functions. This is the first time that the glamour from two different entertainment industries cinema and cricket, will be merged.”
The idea is to jointly upstage the film awards by hosting an ‘IPL Awards Nite’ where super-celebrities from the movies and cricketing fields would join together.
When asked to reveal more details, Kamat said, “It’s early to discuss details of the awards night. It would be one among several major tie-ups with the IPL that our channel has planned. The first of these collaborations is to bring 14 cricketers from the IPL on our reality show ‘Fear Factor’.”
The 14 cricketers’ names are yet to be short-listed. Adds Kamat, “After doing Bigg Boss, with Mr. Bachchan our channel was wondering how to take the unexpected ahead. The IPL-Colors tie-up is an attempt to break the notion that cricket and television are only compatible for the telecast of matches. We want to use the star status of cricketers on our channel in permutations that are unpredictable.”

So, what really got the choreographer-director interested in a chat show of this kind? “I didn’t want just another celeb show. I mean Simi (Grewal) and Karan (Johar) have done it all and done it brilliantly, so how was this one to be any different,” asks Farah. So her main aim was to involve normal, middle-class people in her show. “That’s because in a case of inverted/reverse snobbery, in an industry that endorses glamour and over-rated materialism, I do claim to have middle-class values. I have come up the hard way and buying a purse costing more than a lakh is something my system doesn’t absorb. So if you see me with a designer bag, it has been gifted to me, more often than not by Karan! I personally do the grocery shopping in the local supermarket and, yes, I repeat my clothes,” laughs Farah. Watch Sallu with his mom open up to vivacious host Farah Khan at 9 pm tonight on Star Plus.
