The Amazing Spider Man’s Proto-Goblin straddles not just Bollywood and Hollywood but also juggles the art of Ang Lee with Hindi naach-gaana

Kunal Pradhan (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 27, 2011)

In the back seat of his Prado, Irrfan Khan slips off his chappals, and allows his long legs to straddle over the front seat.

He digs out a pouch of tobacco, and rolls himself a tiny, wrinkled, runt of a cigarette. To his right, sitting nonchalantly on a sheaf of papers is the script of Life of Pi, directed by Ang Lee and co-starring Gerard Depardieu.

Ten minutes ago, he was at a radio station, talking about his upcoming Bollywood release, Thank You, touted as a typical multi-star comedy that encourages viewers to leave their brains at home.

The irony of this contrast is not lost on Irrfan. He breaks into a sly smile, his eyes light up, and he puffs a little deeper the moment you start pointing it out.

Each day is a series of important conversations for Irrfan these days. He talks about the things he always wanted: phone calls from top directors; positive reinforcement from peers; interviews with the New York Times; fans saying they love him; and encounters with divas such as Angelina Jolie and Natalie Portman.

Along the way, he’s picked up adjectives. Everything is ‘wonderful’, More >

Shah Rukh Khan, in an exclusive chat with BT, describes himself in Don 2 which he begins shooting in Berlin this month

Mark Manuel | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; October 2, 2010)

The mercury’s rising, and the October heat is just setting in, but Shah Rukh Khan is packing his woolies and preparing for a cold, bleak winter. Not in Bollywood, of course; but in Berlin, where he is jetting off to in a couple of days to begin work on Excel Entertainment’s Don 2. It is a twomonth-long schedule, and SRK will be away all the while, so if you want to wish him on his birthday on November 2, you had better go to Berlin like Karan Johar is planning to.

After the success of Don, he is naturally excited to be working on the sequel, it promises to be bigger and better. And Don himself has grown, he’s gone and done bad things around the world — now the police of 22 countries are after him as against 11 in the first part! Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, the proud producers of Excel, say that the Mayor of Berlin actually opened out areas in the ancient, historic city that were restricted to the Hollywood filmmakers shooting Inglourious Bastards and Valkyrie there. “That’s how big Shah Rukh is in Berlin,” exclaimed Ritesh. “People there, and I mean not just Asians — but Germans also, have started taking leave to be working on this film as extras.”

The anti-hero of this big budget action thriller also thinks Berlin is a “cool place”. He would, he has a stronger fan More >

And the Hollywood hottie’s younger sis is to romance Bollywood actor in Spanish rom-com

SHARIN WADER BUTANI Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; April 29, 2010)

Nakuul Mehta’s debut film Haal E Dil in 2008 didn’t create a flutter at the box office, but the newcomer has landed himself a role that many Bollywood’s biggies would perhaps kill for. Come August, and Nakuul will be romancing Penelope Cruz’s younger sister Monica in a Spanish romcom.

“I wasn’t supposed to be part of the film. Director Onil Ganguly Avemore had already done screen tests of young Bollywood actors and was on his way back home. That’s when he saw my film on the flight and called his casting director for my contact. I couldn’t believe my luck,” said Nakuul who plays a Bollywood actor in the film.

“Monica plays a flamenco dancer who comes to Mumbai and falls in love with me. But she’s oblivious of the fact that I’m a star. Then the rest is about me following her back to Spain,” revealed Nakuul, who is already learning Spanish to be able to interact with his onscreen love because she knows no English. In real life too, Monica, is an accomplished Flamenco dancer. She has worked in films like Last Hour, The Final Inquiry, The Blackening, Asterix At The Olympic Games (with Gerard Depardieu) and will be seen in Joshua Newton’s Iron Cross opposite Roy Scheider this year, besides doing Spanish televison shows like Un Paso Adelante.
