Censors comes down heavily on Dunno Y… Na Jaane Kyun

The scandal-prone new film Dunno Y… Na Jaane Kyun has gotten itself into trouble with the Censor Board. Blurbs boasting that it is Indian cinema’s first gay love story have apparently not encouraged the censors to loosen up and act liberated.

The Censor Board has clamped down heavily on the love-making sequences between the film’s leading man Kapil Sharma and the Delhi-based model Yuvraaj Parasher who plays Sharma’s lover. Apparently the film, which also features stalwarts Zeenat Aman and Helen, is carpeted with smooching and love-making sequences between the two guys. There is also a lingering gay love-making scene which goes all the way. It apparently had the ladies in the Censor Board walking off in a moral huff and eventually asking the film’s director Sanjay Sharma to delete the torrid kissing sequence and the love-making sequence.

The film’s leading man who says he’s straight in real life, is appalled by the hypocrisy of the Censor Board. “Why should the Censors be scandalized if two men are kissing and making love? My sequences with my screen partner go as far as the scenes showing a guy and girl doing it in our films. And let me tell you, some of these heterosexual sequences are extremely vulgar. The ones in my film are very aesthetic. And so what if it’s two men making love? Love is love regardless of gender.”

The film’s makers have now submitted their film to the revising committee where they hope More >

Move over Lara Croft, Bollywood’s Priyanka Chopra will now perform breathtaking stunts herself in the sequel to Don

Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 19, 2010)

If Akshay Kumar were reading this, he would be impressed. Priyanka Chopra has decided to perform her daredevil stunts in Don 2 all by herself. These would include high-speed summersault jumps and plunges without the help of any body doubles.

Calling the stunts she is performing in Fear Factor, a “teaser trailer”, Priyanka confirms that her stunts in Don 2 will make the action scenes in the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Don, seem like “minor rehearsals”.

And the gritty actress is rehearsing for her role with all her might. Apparently while discussing the details of her character’s physicality with director Farhan Akhtar, Priyanka told him not to keep her gender in mind and let her stunts be as tough as the ones her co-star Shah Rukh Khan is performing.

“I’m not revealing details,” Priyanka said (we suppose she wants to let her action do the talking), “But yes, Don 2 would have far more complicated stunts than the first Don or anything else I’ve ever done.”

All charged about this venture (and with her newly reformed diet in place, as we reported recently) Priyanka said, “The whole idea of doing action scenes is to make them look convincing. Today’s audience doesn’t fall for body doubles. Leading men or women do their stunts themselves in cinema all over the world. What’s the point of being More >

BAAP RE BAAP: Amartya Sen and daughter Nandana Nobel Laureate Prof. Amartya Sen discusses cinema exclusively for BT with actress daughter Nandana Sen in Mumbai

MARK MANUEL Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; October 25, 2009)

It’s funny, with a daughter like the lovely international actress Nandana Sen, you would have thought Nobel Prize economist Prof. Amartya Sen would be well informed about cinema. But he’s not. He knows just about five people connected with filmmaking. And these he counted for me with much difficulty and some prompting from Nandana. “I knew Satyajit Ray extremely well,” he began, “he and I studied at Santiniketan. I had huge admiration for him. And I know Mira Nair, Shyam Benegal, and, and… what’s his name, Mrinal Sen! I do know Nandita Das and like her films, also. And I met… what’s the name of the guy who acted with you in Rang Rasiya… I shook his hand? Randeep Hooda? Yes, I met him. I also met Amitabh Bachchan, whom I don’t know, and Shabana Azmi, who’s an old friend. I used to like her father’s poetry and now, I like her husband’s. And Salman Khan…”

He was in Mumbai to deliver a keynote lecture for the Indian Philosophy Congress yesterday and I was meeting the distinguished father and sexy daughter at his suite in the Taj. I was drinking coffee. The professor ordered a pot of Darjeeling tea. When it came, he was appalled. “This tea is too strong for Darjeeling,” he grumbled, “it’s got the strength of Assam.” Then to Nandana, who was busy More >
