PREITY ZINTA’S FILM FINALLY RELEASES TOMORROW!
Preity Zinta’s first production, Ishkq In Paris, was scheduled to release last year in November. The trailer was unveiled in August and failed to meet the desired expectations. The unveiling of the song Kudiye Di Kurti (featuring Salman Khan) did catch audiences’ attention but didn’t help much in generating excitement. The leading actor, Rhehaan Malliek, didn’t quite managed to be the new heartthrob of the nation. Reports started pouring in as to how the film is finding it difficult to get a distributor and get a correct price from the buyers. At the same time, director Prem Raj was diagnosed with cancer. It was a tough call for Preity and she finally decided to not release until Prem fully recovered Fortunately, Prem soon became ‘cancer-free’. On the other hand, PVR agreed to distribute the film. The new release date was unveiled – May 24. Preity and her team were lucky to get an open week for their film in the sense that the other Bollywood films that release tomorrow (Hum Hain Raahi Car ke, Ziindagi 50-50) won’t prove to be too much of competition. But as said before, the excitement for Ishkq In Paris is at a low and it would be a task for the makers to attract audiences to theatres. A good word of mouth can help but only to an extent.

WILL AURANGZEB SUCCEED DESPITE LACK OF HYPE?
Arjun Kapoor wowed one and all with his terrific performance in Ishaqzaade. The actor is now with back Aurangzeb that’s also produced by Yash Raj Films. Atul Sabharwal, who made the TV show Powder for YRF, makes his debut as a film director with this flick. One of the major strengths of the film is its star cast. Besides Arjun Kapoor, there’s Rishi Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Prithviraj, Tanvi Azmi, Amrita Singh, Sikander Kher, Swara Bhaskar and Salma Agha’s daughter Sasheh. The film seems to have a solid storyline, as evident from the promos. Also, the manner in which Aurangzeb is used as a metaphor and not to forget Arjun’s double role act is damn impressive. The problem is that the theatrical trailer didn’t get quite a great response and the same happened with the songs too. In fact, there wasn’t any buzz or excitement for the film at all and it’s only in the last 10-12 days that promotions started in full swing. Sasheh looks hot but whether she has an important part to play in the film is debatable.
The film definitely won’t take a huge opening but has to pick up (if word of mouth is good) considering that it’s getting a wide release. As aforementioned, the premise and setting of the film is damn interesting and if executed well, Aurangzeb can be an exciting ride. Let’s hope for the best!

GO GOA GONE-ANOTHER SUCCESS FROM RAJ & DK?
Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru have revolutionized filmmaking to an extent. 99 (2009) was like a fresh of breath air and everything – the execution, the characters, the humour – was out of the box and damn entertaining. The duo continued their brilliant work in their second Hindi feature film, Shor In The City (2011). And they have seemed to have done a great work with their third film, Go Goa Gone too. The film releases tomorrow.
The reason why this film has generated considerable excitement is thanks to its first theatrical trailer. It was outstanding to say the least! It went viral within few hours and till date has collected more than 30 lakh video views. This is a feat, considering that the film doesn’t boast of big names in the leading cast – Kunal Khemu, Vir Das, Anand Tiwari and Puja Gupta. Saif Ali Khan appears in a supporting role and from the promos, he seems to be the best thing about the film, apart from the fact that it’s a zombie comedy (the makers call it a zomcom!). One can’t stop laughing when Saif’s character Boris, who presents himself as a blonde Russian, blurts out that ‘(Main) Dilli se hoon b**** c***’!
The makers are giving the film a very wide release which might not be a good idea as although excitement is there, it is not huge enough a la Ek Tha Tiger. WILL AASHIQUI 2 REACH THE LEVEL OF AASHIQUI?
The magic of Aashiqui can never fade away. The songs are still fresh and sound as wonderful as it used to, 23 years ago. A lot of doubts and questions were raised when the makers, Vishesh Films and T-Series, once again joined hands for the sequel, Aashiqui 2. After all, the songs of the sequel have to be as good, if not better, than the first part. The romance has to be as passionate, if not more, than Aashiqui. But it can’t be inferior to part 1 for otherwise, the film will be rejected outright. Thankfully, the music of Aashiqui 2 has got almost all-round acceptance. Every track is simple, sweet, and melodious and instantly touches one’s heart. Tum Hi Ho has become the new love anthem of the country. Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor look great together with Aditya shining in his outburst scenes.
However, the film has tons of challenges. Aashiqui worked not only because of songs but also because it had a great story to tell. Hence, Aashiqui 2 would work only if it’s made well and equipped with a worthy script. Although songs have been unanimously loved, the same can’t be said for the theatrical trailer with many having apprehensions whether the emotional portions will manage to make the desired effect. Secondly, the film releases with a Hollywood biggie like Iron Man 3 which in a small way can make a dent in the film’s collections.

EK THI DAAYAN – ANOTHER FEATHER IN EMRAAN’S CAP?
Emraan Hashmi is having a great run at the box office at present, not only with films produced by Vishesh Films but also by other banners. This rings true especially for Balaji Motion Pictures, with whom he worked on Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and later The Dirty Picture. Now, he features in Balaji’s Ek Thi Daayan that hits screens tomorrow.
The film also stars Konkona Sen Sharma, Huma Qureshi and Kalki Koechlin. The film deals with an illusionist and also, as the film’s title suggests, the world of witches. The promos of the film suggest that it has the spooky elements but seems richer and better than the other horror films of Bollywood. Songs have got appreciation. The presentation seems terrific and debutant director Kannan Iyer seems to have done a great job. Balaji films are always marketed well and Ek Thi Daayan is no exception. However, the buzz for the film isn’t huge. The film might turn out to be too artistic for Emraan’s fans that essentially comprise the ‘masses’. Good response can do the trick but a bad response can prove disastrous. But also, on the other hand, the film has the advantage of a solo release. Also, the previous week’s releases – Commando and Nautanki Saala – will not prove to be much of a competition.
Indian needs a qualitative, super-rich horror-thriller and if Ek Thi Daayan turns out well, it can turn to be a landmark film!

WILL THE TWO MODERATELY BUDGETED FILMS FIND IT’S AUDIENCE?
Tomorrow, April 12, will see the release of Nautanki Saala and Commando. Both the films are helmed by premiere production houses of Bollywood but lack star value. At the same time, it has its strong factors that can help the films sail through.
Nautanki Saala is Ayushmann Khurrana’s second outing after the very successful Vicky Donor and also stars Kunaal Roy Kapur, of Delhi Belly fame. It is directed by Rohan Sippy and Evelyn Sharma, Gaelyn Mendonca and Pooja Salvi are the female leads in the film. The film delves into the world of theatre actors and has some quirky scenes and dialogues, as evident from the promos. The Ayushmann-Kunaal Jodi looks great and if handled well, can turn out to be even memorable. Songs are beautiful, especially Saadi Gali, Mera Mann, Dil Ki To Lag Gayi and Dramebaaz. On the flipside, buzz for the film is limited and it’s the positive response only that can save the film.
Commando, meanwhile, features Vidyut Jammwal, who showed his brilliance in Force. The film showcases never-before-seen action in Bollywood and it’s all done without the use of any cables or stunt double. And the results are there to see! WILL CHASHME BADDOOR RECONSOLIDATE DAVID DHAWAN’S CREDIBILITY?
No one other than David Dhawan can be rightfully hailed as ‘King Of Comedies’ in Bollywood. The director started a new era in Bollywood with his comic capers which in turn inspired many filmmakers to churn out similar themed-films. Sadly, David’s last two films, Do Knot Disturb and Rascals, failed to impress audiences, with the latter being counted as his worst film. However, the promos of his next, Chashme Baddoor, that releases tomorrow, seems to be a fun-filled ride and hopefully won’t disappoint.
As the name suggests, the film is a remake of Sai Paranjpye’s classic Chashme Buddoor (1981). David’s version stars Ali Zafar, Divyendu Sharma, Siddharth, Taapsee Pannu, Anupam Kher, Rishi Kapoor and Lilette Dubey. The film is embellished with some brilliant one-liners, as evident from the promos. Songs too have gradually made a mark, esp Har Ek Friend Kamina Hota Hai. The film looks fresh and energetic with the locales of Goa giving a distinct touch to the film.
Unfortunately, the film has its share of obstacles. A section of audience, especially those who loved the original version, is aghast with the ‘naughtiness’ of the remake. Director Sai Paranjpye reportedly is irked that someone like David is helming the remake. Buzz for the film is limited. Opening for the film would be okay and can pick up only if response is positive.

HIMMATWALA – AJAY DEVGN’S BIGGEST HIT?
Sajid Khan is known for his confidence and his claims for his films, most of which come true. He has made tall predictions for his upcoming film, Himmatwala too, that releases tomorrow. Will it come true?
It’s a common knowledge now that Himmatwala is a remake of the 1983 Jeetendra-Sridevi starrer of the same name. Sajid’s version has Ajay Devgn and Tamannaah Bhatia in lead role while Paresh Rawal, Mahesh Manjrekar, Adhyayan Suman, Zarina Wahab and many others too are a part of the cast. The film looks like a complete entertainer from the trailers and seems replete with clapworthy dialoguebaazi and action scenes, something that will drive audiences mad in certain theatres of the country. Songs too shall make a mark in theatres. Thankfully, the makers haven’t released what music director duo Sajid-Wajid term ‘mother of all item songs’. The track consists of 5 heroines, each of who is a superstar of a certain regional cinema, coming together and dancing with Ajay Devgn. This surely must be an exciting watch! Action seems over the top but apt for a film of this genre. Especially the tiger sequence will be worth a watch.
However, there’s a section of audience that hasn’t got impressed by Himmatwala trailers. Many have thrashed the ‘Naino Mein Sapna’ song and feel that they have killed the essence of the original. WILL BIPASHA BE SECOND TIME LUCKY WITH AATMA?
Bipasha Basu has won hearts over the years but faced a race patch after she delivered back-to-back flops. However, Raaz 3 changed it all. The film was a commercial blockbuster and her performance was most appreciated. Now after Raaz 3, it’s time for another horror drama – Aatma.
Aatma looks great for various reasons. To begin with, it features Nawazuddin Siddiqui who till now has found solace in out-of-the-box and serious cinema (although Talaash too had a hint of supernatural). The film, secondly, looks rich and in many ways an ideal horror film. There are no spacious haunted bungalows, blood, gore, and ugly ghosts dominating the frame. Instead, the setting is more real. The 5-year-old Doyel Dhawan seems to be the attraction of the film. The prodigy has been seen in promotions as well and it’s a treat to read and listen about her ‘starry tantrums’. Music is worth a try too.
However, buzz for the film is very limited. A huge opening, sadly, is out of question. However, horror films should never be underestimated. It can grow from Day 2 onwards. Also, film has limited competition from Rangrezz.
The other release of the week is Rangrezz. It is Jackky Bhagnani’s fourth film and produced, obviously, by his father Mr Vashu Bhagnani. WILL THE 3 RELEASE OF THE WEEK SHINE AT THE BOX OFFICE?
It’s that Friday when again multiple films, all starring/backed by big names are releasing at the same time. While Jolly LLB is produced by Fox Star Studios, Mere Dad Ki Maruti is a film by Y-Films (part of Yash Raj Films) while 3G is backed by Eros International. My views on these films:
JOLLY LLB: Some films look like winners from their first trailer itself. Jolly LLB is a case in point! The trailer seemed hilarious but at the same time gave out strong indication that it is a film with a message, a film with a thought! Arshad Warsi, who has been missing since quite some time and had a forgettable film like Zila Ghaziabad as one of his recent releases, is back in form and how! Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla and not to forget, Amrita Rao, too seems to have done a great job. Dialogues are quite witty and the film that talks about an aam aadmi’s struggle should strike a chord. Buzz for the film is positive and good word of mouth can easily do the trick for this moderately budgeted film.
MERE DAD KI MARUTI: Just like Jolly LLB, Mere Dad Ki Maruti too created an impact through its first trailer which is in truest sense, is ROFL-ilicious! The subsequent promos and songs have been consistent in preserving the excitement for this film. Saqib Saleem, who rocked in Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge, seems in top form.
