Kiran Rao is ready with her directorial debut Dhobi Ghat. Wednesday afternoon she organised a press meet to show the first look of her film. While the 90 seconds promo met with a good response, Kiran was a tad nervous to face the media for the first time in her life.
Kiran Rao started off with wishing everyone Eid Mubarak and someone asked her where Aamir was. Kiran Rao said, “It was mutually discussed and decided that Aamir won’t come for the conference and I wanted you to know me as the writer/ director of Dhobi Ghat.
It was about time that we got to know each other better as an individual and not as Mrs. Aamir Khan.”
Yes Kiran… we do know you, rather well, as a matter of fact. Good luck with the film.
The Bollywood superstar’s Bodyguard has reportedly been lapped up for Rs 62 crores
Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; November 6, 2010)
Dabangg, that opened to an unprecedented release in September, has pushed Salman Khan on top of the charts. The only other Khan who is higher than him at this point is Aamir (courtesy 3 Idiots). Naturally, now the market is watching every move (or should that read, every movie) that Salman is making, announcing or even suggesting.
His next release will be Anees Bazmee’s Ready that is expected in April 2011. However, the first film to get the benefit of the Dabangg super success is his brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri’s Bodyguard that has Salman and Kareena Kapoor in the lead.
The film is expected to go on the floors on January 16, and is expected to release on Eid (a Salman speciality) on August 29, 2011. Anil Ambani’s company has reportedly paid Rs 62 crores for the rights of this film. Says a trade source, “Since Salman hit a purple patch with Dabangg, his movies are attracting huge prices.” The market source also says that Bollywood that had decided not to acquire films for exorbitant prices is actually going back on its word.
“After the debacle of Kites and Raavan, you would have thought that people learned a lesson,” the source says. “However, the market is currently looking good. And big hero films are back to being bought, sold and resold for some unheard of prices. Yes, this Diwali the gold rush is on.”
Shirish Kunder is in advanced talks with the actress for the heroine’s role in Joker. It’s clear that Farah is on good terms with her
That Farah Khan’s hubby Shirish Kunder may have finally cast a heroine for his next Joker is interesting. But what’s even better is that it’s going to be Deepika Padukone. So, if all goes well, Akshay Kumar will be seen romancing Deepika Padukone in Joker. Clearly, Deepika and Farah have mended their differences.
It may be recalled that soon after Deepika’s debut release Om Shanti Om, the actress did not bother to keep in touch with the woman who gave her the first big break in Bollywood, Farah Khan.
After the success of her debut film, Deepika moved on with her newfound fame. She started getting projects with big banners and got so busy working on each of them that she was not left with any time to keep in touch with Farah. This had upset Farah tremendously.
But now the two have buried the hatchet.
A source close to Joker revealed, “Deepika and Shirish are in advanced talks. She is the prime contender to fill the heroine’s slot in the film.”
Apparently, on reading the script of the film, Deepika loved the character she is supposed to play. The source added, “Deepika is very excited to be backing Farah Khan’s fold. After all, it was Farah who gave her her first super hit film Om Shanti Om.”
On being asked about signing Deepika, Shirish was a bit evasive. He said, “We are currently in the process of casting the main lead opposite Akshay for Joker. Certain top names are being considered. It is a performance-oriented role. Akshay and I will take the final call in a week.”
Farah however, chose to clarify the matter. She said, “Jo bhi hua tha, it got sorted out long ago. She came for Eid to my place recently and also on my show.”
Though Deepika remained unavailable for comment, here’s a tip she may want to use: gratitude is great attitude.
Post Dabangg’ s success, Sajid Nadiadwala is allegedly asking Eros to shell out Rs 75 crore for Kick, the next Salman-Sonakshi starrer
Last Friday’s blockbuster has certainly changed equations in the industry. Sajid Nadiadwala, who is producing Kick starring Salman and Sonakshi Sinha, has quoted for a gobsmacking Rs 75 crore to Eros if they wish to acquire the film.
Salman’s latest hit Dabangg churned out huge profits for Eros, but at Rs 75 crore for his next, Eros is asking for some extra time to ponder over this.
A source reveals, “After the super-hit Dabangg, Salman and Sonakshi have become the hottest pair in town. Producer Sajid Nadiadwala, who is casting the duo in his next production, Kick, has quoted a huge amount for the film. Eros is very close to Salman and Sajid and have done Salman’s last two films, Veer and Dabangg.
Although Dabangg made big bucks for Eros, Veer was a major dud and the company suffered major losses.
Now, when Kick came on the table for discussion, Nadiadwala quoted a price of Rs 75 crore after considering Salman’s market value post-release of Dabangg. Eros has found the amount too huge, but is still working out the logistics.”
When contacted, an Eros spokesperson said, “We share a very good relationship with Sajid and he has not discussed any amount with us.” Sajid Nadiadwala also said, “I haven’t spoken to them as yet.
We yet have to lock the script and work on our budget.”
But a source close to Eros said that Nadiadwala had indeed demanded Rs 75 crore for Kick. “It is too early to quote a price of Rs 75 crore for Kick now.
The movie will release in the middle of next year or on Eid. One cannot judge from now what will be the market situation then. Salman has been very close to Eros, and one is still considering the amount,” said the source.
(for a film, and may be more)
One of Bollywood’s most legendary romances could well be rekindling. Katrina Kaif, they say, has gone back to Salman Khan.
Not so long ago, both Katrina and Salman were shouting from the rooptops that they were single. “But not anymore. They have reconciled their differences and are back together as a couple,” says a source.
One good indication of this patch-up is Bodyguard, Salman’s sister Alvira’s directorial debut, slated for Eid 2011, now a pretty auspicious date for the Khans given the stupendous success of Dabangg. Sources confirm that Katrina is slated to play the female lead.
Alvira always wanted Katrina for Bodyguard, but Sallu and Kat parted ways. In the interim, she approached Asin but it didn’t work out. Salman, despite his ‘split’ with Katrina, has green-lit his sister’s foray into direction, with Kat opposite him.
Alvira’s husband, Atul Agnihotri, said, “To be frank, there’s no one we’d like to see more in this film than Katrina. The truth is that neither Salman nor her has any inhibitions about working with each other. In fact they are already doing a song for Farah Khan’s film. This goes to show how thoroughly professional they both are.
We should be ready to make an official announcement about the casting in a couple of days. The only hitch may be Katrina’s dates, which are still being worked out. We have already decided on an Eid release so everything is being worked backwards from this proposed release date. We’re trying to sort things out and are hoping for the best.”
Is it love again for these two then? Surely it’s been a difficult time for Katrina; despite her alleged dalliances with some co-stars, she cuts a lonely figure in the corridors of tinsel town. Salman, after all, has truly nurtured her talent from her struggling days; it is a gratitude Kat can’t seem to ignore.
Likewise, the split was never acrimonious, even by Sallu’s turbulent standards: neither badmouthed the other. So much so, that Katrina even recently broke down when her broken relationship with Salman was probed into at a recently-held press conference.
From what we hear, Salman is equally happy to have Katrina back in his arms. In fact, he now wants to settle down with Kat as the buzz goes. Says a source, “Salman’s ego might not have allowed him to say so publicly, but he has invested nearly seven years in Katrina now. He may have had his share of flings, but he wants to marry Katrina eventually.”
Jab miya-biwi raazi toh kya karega kaazi? Bodyguard is scheduled to go on the floors in December. It’s also the wedding season incidentally…

Festival releases isn’t something new when it comes to Bollywood outings. Earlier Diwali releases used to be most lucrative with the date being keenly awaited by majority of prominent filmmakers year after year. Post that Christmas became fashionable with the long holiday season offering guaranteed results. Of late, it is Eid – most recent example being that of Dabangg – where record breaking collections are being evidenced.
However, how does one explain the journey of a film which has actually traversed through not just one but each (read carefully – ‘each’) of these major milestones right through its making?
This is the feat that Tees Maar Khan has managed to achieve, something that could perhaps take it through the record books of being the ‘most auspicious film’ ever made in the history of Bollywood. Here is how the milestones have looked like:
- Shooting of this film commenced on Holi
- Shooting of talkie portions ended on Eid/Ganesh Chaturthi
- Last song, the special ‘qawalli’ number with Salman Khan (in guest appearance), Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, would be shot during ‘Navratri’
- First promo would be unveiled on Diwali
- The film would release on Christmas
“Seemingly there is some divine intervention at play here”, says Farah who is visibly relieved with the speedy shoot that her film has seen, “You may plan a lot of things but ultimately someone up there has to ensure that everything falls in place. We would have never imagined that so many auspicious occasions would coincide with each of the major milestones of Tees Maar Khan. So far, it has been so very good. I hope and pray that this divinity stays on with the film forever.”
The countdown has begun!

Like Aamir Khan seems to have a monopoly on the Christmas weekend, Salman Khan seems to have monopolized the festive Eid week for his releases. It’s a known fact that Aamir has released his films in the Christmas weekend – TAARE ZAMEEN PAR , GHAJINI and 3 IDIOTS – and the results are astounding. Similarly, Salman has been lucky during Eid, with both WANTED and DABANGG proving mega-hits. Now, Salman and his producers have decided to continue with the trend of releasing the actor’s new films on the festive occasion of Eid.
Although Salman’s brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri hasn’t started shooting his next venture MY LOVE STORY [remake of the Malayalam hit BODYGUARD], he has already decided to bring the film in Eid . Prior to that Salman will have one more film hitting the screens – Bhushan Kumar’s READY, directed by Anees Bazmee and co-starring Asin. “We will release READY in Summer 2011,” Bhushan states.
After squabbling over his choice of spouse and his political leanings, Sanju Baba and his sisters finally buried the hatchet at a birthday bash held by him for brother-in-law, Owen
Sanjay Dutt and wife Manyata Dutt had a triple celebration at their house on Saturday night. Apart from hosting a dinner for Eid and celebrating Ganpati, Mr and Mrs Dutt also held a birthday bash for Priya Dutt’s husband, Owen Roncon.
Seems the brother-sister have patched up after reportedly having a fall-out. There were strong rumours about Sanjay contesting elections for the Samajwadi Party; his sister Priya Dutt is from the Congress Party and this caused significant tension between the siblings. They also learnt about his marriage to Manyata through media reports, and were not initially happy about their brother’s choice of spouse.

A source close to the family reveals, “Tiffs and arguments are a part and parcel of every relationship. There were minor differences between the family and they were distant from each other. But it seems that this rift is a thing of the past. On Saturday night the entire family was under one roof – at Sanjay Dutt’s house.”
The source continues, “There was a grand dinner and close friends and family were a part of the celebration. Manyata and Priya, who were rumoured to have differences, shared warm vibes. The party went on till the wee hours of the morning.”
“Inspite of all differences, sisters Priya and Namrata have always visited Dutt on raksha bandhan. Today there is a baby shower for Manyata and the sisters will be part of the celebrations. Seems all is well between the families,” adds the source.
Sanjay Dutt’s publicist confirmed the news.

Salman Khan has always been known to speak right from his heart. Not the one to mince his words, he has got into trouble with the media a lot of times because of being either misunderstood or misquoted. No wonder then that he shied away from media attention for so long. He never trusted reporters and believed that media was always out to get him. Sometimes being called a bad boy and at other times painted as a hot headed, careless celebrity, he was always reported for his unlawful activities rather than his philanthropic acts which are many.
How is it then that he has still maintained his connect with the common man? The truth is that the janta loves Salman for the simple fact that you get what you see. Not the kind to create drama or indulge in blarney, he is the most believable star of this century who is far from being two faced.
It took a while before Salman decided to become media friendly. It took a while before he started interacting with people on shows and public forums and everyone loved Sallu for what he spoke. Be it his style, his jokes or his devil-may-care attitude. But have we drawn him back into the shell he used to be in? Have we again driven him away? The recent controversy surrounding Salman Khan does hint at just that.
In an interview to a Pakistani TV channel, the reporter asked Salman to comment on the anti-Pakistan sentiment in the country to which Salman was quoted as saying, “Everybody knew the (Pakistani) government was not behind it and that it was a terror attack.” He further went on to comment on the coverage received during 26/11 calling it an elitist hype raising a hue and cry in the entire country including state government and political parties.
But he clarified saying that, “Since it was the elite who were targeted this time on and it involved the 5 Star hotels that it was so widely spoken about. Attacks have happened in trains and small towns too, but no one talked about it so much. The attacks happened because our security failed.” The point that Salman was trying to make was that every human life is equal and should receive equal treatment. When the media painted Salman as insensitive and political parties were up in arms, he created a clarification video and put it up on twitter to get the real point across. He went ahead and said, “A terrorist has no nationality, no religion and no guts.” He apologised to one and all if anything he said or did hurt people’s sentiments while he assured his faith in the countries armed forces and intelligence.
It is sad that we time and again call ourselves as a democratic Nation with freedom of speech being part of our preamble while we render a celebrity to cut a sorry figure when he/she expresses their views. No wonder then that Salman went on twitter and posted “Next time mein apnne sub interview sub khud bhi record karoonga , kya bolte ho ? Takeh yeh sub controversies nahi ho.”
Where at one end Salman had to feel apologetic for simply stressing on equality and value of human life, his dad had to come out to the media and apologise on his behalf saying his son isn’t articulate enough. But isn’t that the exact thing that Salman’s fan love about him? But it possibly won’t last for long. The trouble his family and he had to go through on the eve of Eid thanks to the hooplah around his interview has made Salman retract from any public forum. He might just quit twitter where he enjoys a following of 400,063 fans. As he tweeted today saying “Looks like I mite have to get off twitter. Don’t want to but what to do? I think I messed up, so sorry guys, sorry bolne mein koi sharam nahi.” Hope the over reactive politicians and trouble making media is happy now.

As expected and predicted by this writer time and again, DABANGG opened to an earth-shattering and record-breaking response across the country.
