Director Anubhav Sinha (known for the super dud Cash) must have felt like King for exactly a day when rumour mills said that his Ra.One with Shah Rukh Khan was sold for Rs.175 crores. But a segment of Bollywood saw red. “How can a Anubhav-SRK project get Rs 175 croreswhen a SRK-Farhan Akhtar (Farhan’s box office record is much better than Anubhav’s) combination be negotiated for Rs 125 crores,’’ asked a trade guru. He added, “While neither the price of Don-2 is Rs 125 crores nor can Ra.One ever fetch Rs 175 crores (in these economically challenged times) it is ridiculous for vested interests to spread these stories.’’
Trade expert Taran Adarsh said, “Bollywood is going through a correction process. Now, more than ever, there is arithmetic attached to the acquisition process. And the price of a film is based on the combined equity of the director and the star. If Shah Rukh Khan and Raju Hirani were to come into the market with a project and you hear figures like Rs 125 crores being bandied about, it may seem more likely. Both are hot at the box office. But just to float random figures will once again be Bollywood’s biggest folly. ’’
It is said that after disasters like Raavan and Kites (both of which crossed the Rs 100 crore marks leaving their investors near bankrupt), the Hindi film industry is very sceptical about acquisition prices. Exaggerated reports say that reeling under the impact of huge disasters like Drona, Blue, Kites and Raavan, there are film corporations who are unable to float their own IPOs (initial public offerings). An insider said, “Some corporations have tightened their purse strings and are even keeping a count of how many cups of tea are being served each day in their offices. So where is the question of them acquiring movies for ridiculous prices?’’
Trade consultant Amod Mehra also warned that one irresponsible number can have a domino effect on the whole system. “Stars and makers will again start believing in their own supremacy theory. And if they make ridiculous demands, then the trade that is just about raising its head with correct pricing (as in the case of I Hate Luv Storys) will fall prey to its own greed.’’ However, he felt that the biggest superstars (Aamir Khan, SRK) and sensible filmmakers are very aware of the trade machinations. “And it is just a few ill-informed people who end up spreading rumours of crazy prices when the reality is something else,’’ said Amod.
While corporations conveniently keep saying “company policy doesn’t allow us to talk figures,’’ it is hinted that the deal for Don-2 will close at Rs 81 crores; Golmaal-3 is being negotiated for a similar amount; Akshay Kumar’s Tees Maar Khan will sell for Rs 55 crores despite the unbeatable combination of Farah Khan (whose last hit Om Shanti Om was huge) and Katrina Kaif (10 hits in a row); Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish with Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also reportedly closed at Rs 81 crores. “This itself is a very big price to recover,’’ said a broker. It is hinted that SLB (whose Saawariya was a washout) has allegedly been paid Rs 30 crores for this film, and so has his hero Hrithik. But these are definitely the biggest deals as far as the current scenario goes. And even these may prove fatal for Bollywood. Ideally films that are in the Rs 55-70 crore bracket are the safe bets.
“Producers be warned. A 3-Idiots that grossed something to the tune of Rs 375 crores is a once-in-a-blue-moon phenomenon,” said Taran.
A whopping amount of Rs 300 crore is riding on Shah Rukh Khan’s next two films, RA.One and Don 2
Agreed, Bollywood has lost crores this year because a lot of expensive films failed to retrieve their expected turnovers (Blue, of course, stands apart for its sheer wastage of money). But the biggest production companies seem to have blind belief in films that star Shah Rukh Khan. Nearly Rs 300 crore is riding on King Khan’s shoulders.
Newsflash: Reliance Big Pictures has not hit rock bottom with the poor turnover of the Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai starrer Raavan. Neither has Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori’s Kites debacle at the box office obstructed their soaring fund levels.
The buzz in the trade is that Reliance Big Pictures has bought the rights of Don 2 from Excel Entertainment for Rs 125 crore, which is about Rs 25 crore more than what they purchased Kites for. The deal has taken place even before Don 2 has gone on the floors, which implies that even in today’s times when films are flopping days after their release, the buyers in the market have extreme faith in a film that has Shah Rukh playing the lead.
Added to this is, there is talk in the industry of Eros International buying Shah Rukh’s home-production RA.One for a whopping Rs 175 crore.
A leading distributor says, “Shah Rukh rocks. He is still one of the top three stars in this country. His film guarantees good returns. Yes, Reliance Big Pictures has bought Don 2 for an amount which is definitely more than Rs 100 crore. But I think that Shah Rukh’s deal with Eros International on RA.One could be a funding proposal, which implies that Shah Rukh can still sell the film to other buyers.”
Even trade analysts in the film industry seem to second this view. A leading trade-analyst says, “I am unaware of the exact figures between Red Chillies Entertainment and Eros International, but I know that Shah Rukh is asking for at least Rs 150 crore for RA.One, wherein he has used some top-notch technicians to take his project to a very high level.”
Priti Shahani, chief strategy and marketing officer of Reliance Big Pictures confirmed, “It’s true that we have Don 2 in our slate of films for next year, but there is no truth in the purchase price that is being speculated in the market.”
An official from Eros International also confirmed that their latest purchase is RA.One, while refusing to reveal the exact terms and conditions of the agreement.
Sunil Lulla (President, Eros International), Amit Khanna (CEO, Reliance Big Pictures), Ritesh Siddhwani (Excel Entertainment) and Shah Rukh Khan remained unavailable for comment.
Currently, Shah Rukh is busy shooting for RA.One. As soon as he completes it, he’ll start work on Don 2, which co-stars Priyanka Chopra and Arjun Rampal. And all this hard work does indeed pay off. And how!
The actress is ready and training hard, but none of the 13 contestants for Fear Factor have been finalised
The upcoming season of Khatron Ke Khiladi is jinxed. Hostess Priyanka Chopra’s shooting dates have been fixed for the 2nd and 3rd week of August. And Priyanka has been diligently preparing in Brazil for her daredevil anchor role for months.
Apparently, the contestants are still not finalised. After the BCCI came down heavily on our cricketers post the IPL debacle, 13 of them opted out of Fear Factor.
The team has to now rely on hunks from other fields. Only after Priyanka approves of them that is.
But this too has failed. The actors and models don’t want to participate in the show. Did the tough stunts of the last season dampen their spirits or did Akshay’s bordering on ruthless demeanor scare them?
Kushal Punjabi, Sonu Sood, Kunal Khemu, Arjan Bajwa, Purab Kohli and Aarya Babbar have all declined the offer, while the ones still being cajoled are Dino Morea, Emraan Hashmi, Himesh Reshammiya, Abhishek Kapoor, Brett Lee and Marc Robinson.
Says a source from the channel, “We’ve so far locked in only Rahul Bose and Milind Soman and that too after much haggling. The rest of the slots are open.” The team is panicking now.
|Rahul Bose||Milind Soman|
The source laments, “Priyanka’s dates will slip out of our hands if we don’t shoot with her in August because after her two-week stint in Brazil, she heads to shoot for Don 2. Besides, we are supposed to go on air in September.”
Priyanka seems oddly unaffected though. “I’ve been training really hard and I’m all set. I’ve no clue about the contestants. That’s the channels look out,” she says.Is there a workable solution then?
Says the channel source, “We’ll have to up the contestants’ fee, as we did for Bigg Boss. Many of the people we’ve approached are asking for unreasonable fee.” The channel admits getting celebrities on this show is getting tough. Colors’ CEO Rajesh Kamat is optimistic though, “By the first week of July we hope to have our contestants in place.” Fingers crossed.
Ritesh Sidhwani has a firm grip on the reins of one of Bollywood’s biggest production houses
MEENA IYER | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; June 22, 2010)
Actor-director Farhan Akhtar, the face of Excel Entertainment, and producer-partner Ritesh Sidhwani, the force behind the production house, have an enviable slate on hand. The company, in a decade since that cultclassic Dil Chahta Hai, bankrolled Farhan’s Lakshya and Don, Zoya Akhtar’s Luck By Chance, Reema Kagti’s Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd, Abhishek Kapoor’s recent National Award winner Rock On, and Vijay Lalwani’s psychological thriller Karthik Calling Karthik. And currently has on the floor Game (Abhishek Bachchan), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol) and Don-II (Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra).
Farhan, of course, is the creative strength, but Ritesh is the unsung hero who multi-tasks. Young (in his mid 30s), energetic and affable, Ritesh can be aptly described as the nerve centre of Excel. From being on board the focus groups for scripts readings, to music sittings, casting and actually green-lighting projects, Ritesh does most things effortlessly. With math being his strong point, this astute businessman makes sure that none of their films exceed limits. His logic is simple. “Never over-spend on a project and you will definitely take home some profits. Money must be intelligently spent.’’ Happy to delegate to his line producers, Ritesh says, “Once I put a film on the road, then my role is that of a silent observer.” But everyone knows that if they need some quick troubleshooting, Ritesh’s number’s on quick dial. For Farhan and Ritesh, films are a work of passion. They own the copyright of all their films and while they believe in curtailing budgets, they also don’t compromise on quality.
Ritesh, who admires the business acumen of Hollywood honchos like Jerry Bruckheimer, Warren Beatty and Quentin Tarantino, knows that the only way you can conduct a film business is by being totally hands-on. “It is an all-consuming passion, not a 9 to 5 business, and unless you have a crazy drive for it, you can’t make it work,’’ he says. He feels Excel has paved its own little success story in the decade gone by and worked with every big Bollywood superstar including Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan, simply because as a company, they steer clear of politics. Says Ritesh, “Box office apart, we know that films are about good stories and great narratives. Four months of rock solid preparation goes into every film of ours before the principal photography actually begins.”
Priyanka Chopra is likely to join Kareena Kapoor for Race 2
After Kareena Kapoor was chosen over Katrina Kaif and Bipasha Basu to star opposite Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor, for the sequel of Race, news has it that Priyanka Chopra would join the team soon.
Talking about the absence of Katrina and Bipasha in the sequel, a source says, “Katrina’s absence was almost certain because her character in Race dies, but Bipasha’s absence is certainly surprising.”
A close friend of Priyanka’s confirms, “Priyanka still has to complete Saat Khoon Maaf. She will then move on to Don 2 and the TV Series Fear Factor 3. But she is excited about the character she’ll play in Race 2 and is working out her dates for the project.”
According to sources, Producer Ramesh Taurani and directors Abbas-Mustan plan to pool in all their resources to make the sequel a far slicker and sexier version of the first one. When contacted though, Ramesh Taurani denied this.

Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment have announced their release line up for 2011. GAME, starring Abhishek Bachchan, Kangna Ranaut, Boman Irani, Jimmy Shergill, Gauhar Khan, Shahana Goswami and Sarah Jane Dias, is slated for a 21st January 2011 release; Zoya Akhtar’s ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA, starring Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol and Kalki, is slated for an April-May 2011 release and DON 2, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani, Om Puri and Lara Dutta and directed by Farhan Akhtar, will release on 23rd December 2011.
AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; May 25, 2010)
Lara Dutta is the latest star to join Farhan Akhtar’s Don 2. The actress has been cast alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Arjun Rampal — all three who have been retained from its prequel Don. And though producer Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan are tight-lipped about her role, a source revealed that the actress is touted to play a femme fatale in this slick-flick. However, whether Lara will be seen vying for SRK’s attention alongside Priyanka remains to be seen. A source said, “Lara’s not replacing Eesha (Koppikhar). She’s a completely new addition to the cast with an entirely new part written for her. But yes, the role will require Lara to learn some form of martial arts and she is very kicked about doing an action role.”
For Lara, it may just be a dream come true, as she had not too long ago revealed her wish of doing a hard-core action-oriented role. Incidentally, with Lara and Priyanka on board, the film teams two former Miss Indias (Universe and World, respectively) who had made their debut together in the 2003 Akshay Kumar-starrer Andaaz.

Priyanka Chopra would be shooting in Brazil for Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi – 3. She has never visited that part of the world. And she’s all set to leave in July.
Says Priyanka excitedly, “I’m looking forward to shooting the show there. I haven’t seen Brazil. So July onwards I’m going to be basking in Brazilian territory.”
Says Priyanka, “I was getting a lot of television offers for the last couple of years. But the amount of time that those shows required didn’t suit me. Besides nothing excited me. Fear Factor is one of my favourite shows. And it goes with my personality. I’m sporty and spontaneous. The channel didn’t have to convince me much. The pay-cheque? Ah, let’s say it’s the cherry on the icing.”
Priyanka says she will be more than up to cracking what’s seen to be a male domain. “Just because I’m a girl it shouldn’t be presumed that I can’t enter the boys’ territory. I’d do the stunts better than the boys. And cricketers are people I’m very cool with. Not that I know the cricket world that well. It will be great getting to know them.”
Priyanka has her own stunts planned for Fear Factor. “All I can tell you is that the stunts this year are going to be bigger and scarier than they were on the show last year .Now we’ve male contestants instead of female and I’ve to match up to them.”
Priyanka has just returned from two months in the US shooting for Anjaana Anjaani. “It was great shooting with Ranbir. It was a fun film. I enjoyed that space after doing soul-sapping parts. We’ve captured the US like never before.”
Priyanka shoots down rumours regarding Ranbir and her. “I don’t want to react to link ups. When there’s something I’ll react to, I will. Ranbir and I got along very well. He’s good actor and a lovely person.”
Co-stars are not Priyanka’s top priority. “It has to be the part that excites me. That’s most important. Then the set-up and finally the co-actor. So far I’ve been lucky. The parts that are coming to me are wonderful. It’s very difficult for me to pick and choose from the ones offered. I’m really grateful to directors who see me as capable of carrying off these parts.”
Talking on her passion for tweeting, Priyanka says, “I write directly to people. Not just about my films, but also about my thoughts and feelings. People like that. I get great opinions on me as an actor and a person. Otherwise actors end up only having sycophants around them. I like having people around me who keep me grounded.”
In San Francisco, Priyanka visited the Twitter headquarters. “They invited me. I was very excited to go. They were all open to ideas and exchange of thoughts. It was a nice interactive session. Am I looking at extending myself beyond acting? Well I’m an actor right now. I don’t plan too much ahead. Whenever I do, God makes other, better plans for me. I do have facets to my personality that I’m discovering all the time. For me even getting to know the actor in me was a learning experience. I got to learn on the job .I’ve fallen, hurt myself, got up battered and bruised and moved on.”
Priyanka is also looking forward to the stunts in Don 2. “But they won’t be an extension of my stunts on Fear Factor. Fear Factor will be ME. For the first time people will see the real me. The real personality coming through. And that’s what I fear in Fear Factor. Not the stunts. I’ve always done outdoor stunts whether it’s bungee jumping or mountain climbing. I’ve an affinity to danger.”
As for Saat Khoon Maaf, Priyanka says, “I accepted it for Vishal Bhardwaj. It’s a role of a lifetime. And he has the confidence in me. I just plan to walk through the role in Vishal Sir’s feet. And I’ve seven different looks for the role. The people who did the makeup in The Pirates Of The Caribbean are coming down for my looks. Yes I’ve already worked out a different look for each segment.”
Priyanka is satisfied with her career. “I work very hard and then I leave it to God. When I went up to the President to get my National award I was choked with emotions. It was such an overwhelming experience when I was told I was one of the youngest to win in the adult category. I cried when I walked off the stage. I’m glad the jury could see my performance in Fashion in spite of the glamour and gave me the award out of all the wonderful performances during the year.
Priyanka’s father released his devotional album on Saturday. “We collaborated on his shabd kirtan album with a save-the-girlchild campaign. It is a very important issue to me.”
Priyanka Chopra to play a mentally challenged role in the Katrina Kaif-Ranbir Kapoor starrer Khamoshi
Be it their films or their friendship, Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor are the flavour of the season. After starring in the romcom Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and Prakash Jha’s soon-to-release Raajneeti, the two youngsters will be seen together in Anurag Basu’s Khamoshi.
However, the two will be far from being a cosy twosome both on and off the screen. Buzz is that Priyanka Chopra will also be playing a lead role in the film. According to sources, Priyanka, who makes an entry only after the interval and plays a mentally challenged character, loved the script and immediately agreed to star in it. This will be Priyanka’s second film with buddy Ranbir with whom she also stars in Siddharth Anand’s Anjaana Anjaani.
|Priyanka Chopra||Ranbir Kapoor||Katrina Kaif|
Among the long list of filmmakers who are keen to get Katrina and Ranbir to star in their film is director Imtiaz Ali. But Katrina turned down the offer to star in his film Rockstar opposite Ranbir and chose to star in Anurag Basu’s film instead.
However, considering that Imtiaz Ali is known to always let his lead actresses take centre stage in his films, Katrina could have second thoughts after she hears of the latest addition that she isn’t the only actress to star in Khamoshi, which has Ranbir playing a deaf and mute role.
Anurag Basu is currently trying to finalise the dates as Priyanka is also committed to Don 2 with Farhan Akhtar and Shah Rukh Khan.
Priyanka’s spokesperson said, “We cannot confirm or deny the news right now. Priyanka is currently evaluating several scripts.”
Khamoshi is produced by UTV.
