Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar has been extended an invitation to visit Pakistan as a state guest by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani
It is an honour very few are truly worthy of. Our very own Lata tai has been invited to fly to Pakistan to meet the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. If things go as planned, she would soon be sitting, in all her glory, with the crème-de-la-crème of the Pakistani PM’s office.
As it turns out, a very persuasive invitation for Lataji to visit our neighbouring country has come from none other than the Pakistani Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani himself.
During a dinner meeting with singer Adnan Sami in Islamabad last week (which Mumbai Mirror reported recently), Gilani raised the question of Lataji’s long-pending visit. “She owes it to her fans in Pakistan, which includes me,” the Pakistani PM apparently told Adnan.
He then suggested that Adnan personally bring her to Pakistan as the country’s state guest.
Obviously, if Lataji visits Pakistan soon, cultural ties between the two countries would go to another level.
Confirming the invitation from Pakistan’s PM, Adnan says, “Yes, Gilani saab has invited Lataji through me. He is a huge fan of hers. So is Nawaz Sharif for that matter.”
As per Adnan’s account, during his dinner last week in Islamabad, Gilani could not stop singing Lataji’s evergreen melodies. It was after that session that the PM extended the invitation for Lataji to Adnan.
|Yousuf Raza Gilani|
Says Adnan, “Lataji has been invited as a state guest to Pakistan. I will personally escort her and will make sure she is looked after properly like a Bharat Ratna should be. Lataji is a national treasure not only in India but also in Pakistan. Just the thought of her visit has filled Pakistani people with a feeling of elation. She must go there. I will make sure it happens.”
While Lataji is yet to take a call on this invitation, the long-standing desire of the Pakistanis to have her amongst them for just one visit, is now on its way to fulfillment.
Harassed by hubby, distressed by dad
|Dimpy Mahajan addresses the media a day after Mumbai Mirror broke the story that she had been beaten regularly by her husband Rahul Mahajan|
It was Thursday evening, Saumasri Ganguly, known to the world as Dimpy Mahajan, was pleading on the phone. The familiar and assuring voice of her mother was all she needed to break down. “I am all alone here ma, even baba (father) is not supporting me.”
By Thursday evening it was obvious, a battered, bruised Dimpy was fighting a lonely battle.
A family of extremely modest means, the Gangulys had played their parts during her closely followed reality TV marriage. They had taken a leap of faith once, but seemed to fight shy of doing it again.
They wanted her to go back to Rahul Mahajan, the man they believed truly, madly, deeply, loved her.
|Dimpy showing bruises on her leg after Mahajan hit her on Wednesday night, forcing her to walk out of their house in Worli|
A man, who could afford her the life and the luxuries they had always wished for their daughter. “Or else why would Rahul send her business class tickets to return to Mumbai every time she came here for her exams?” questioned Dimpy’s concerned uncle, who lives in the same house as her family in north Kolkata.
Meanwhile, the 21-year-old was visibly in pain. The bruises on her thighs, hands and forehead were raw, throbbing. She feared for her life, her father’s life, who was at that very moment sitting with the man who had been beating her up.
When Mirror called up Mahajan on Thursday night, he said, “I just had dinner with Dimpy’s father.”
What he did not tell us was retired income-tax lawyer Saibal Ganguly, his father-in-law who had flown down from Kolkata in response to his daughter’s distress call, was there as a peacemaker.
He was trying to get an idea of what could have gone so horribly wrong between the charmer of a son-in-law and their beloved daughter.
|Dimpy wed Rahul Mahajan on a reality show. Seen here with her father|
As seen on TV
Rahul Mahajan, flush from the success of his stint in Bigg Boss which saw him garner unprecedented public sympathy, participated in a reality show to choose his wife. 21-year-old model and small time Bengali actress Dimpy, wide-eyed and in Mumbai to try her luck in the glamour world, seemed to be a perfect choice.
Rahul and Dimpy were bonafide reality TV stars and seemed determined to milk it. Both made a slew of appearances on various TV shows, always professing undying love for each other.
But there was trouble in paradise. “Fights over petty issues would blow out of proportion and turn physical. He once hit me with a hanger, leaving a huge scar on my back,” says Dimpy.
The violence, she says, escalated with her insistence on appearing for her second year exams. A fact corroborated by her uncle Tapan Ganguly. “He would summon her back every time she came to Kolkata for her exams. He said, there was no need to study and for some Rs 5000-job. But Dimpy wanted to complete her studies,” said her uncle.
June was a particularly bad month for Dimpy. Twice she got her mother-in-law Rekha Mahajan involved in the fracas. “I went back to Kolkata quite often because of the fights. Each time Rahul would cajole me to return and promise it wouldn’t happen again. I kept giving in, in the faith that he was a nice guy and he loved me. But there was this other side of him which I couldn’t handle. Also, being a middle-class girl, I wanted to give the marriage my best shot.”
Things came to a head right after the young couple celebrated their birthdays, which happen to be on the same day, on July 25. “All of Wednesday we spent time together and even had a few drinks in the evening. I went to sleep, only to be rudely awakened early in the morning by a blow on my face,” says Dimpy. “Rahul had seen something on my cell phone and wanted to know where it came from.”
Shocked but determined not to give in to his terror tactics, Dimpy told him upfront she was in no mood to oblige. “I told him even if you kill me, now I won’t say anything.” It was enough to send Rahul into a fit of rage and he continued with his assault.
“When I tried to run to the servant’s quarters next door, he grabbed me by my hair and kept hitting me even after I fell down.”
After the beatings, he started making calls to her parents in Kolkata asking them to make her see reason. “While he was on the phone, I grabbed my passport, wallet and cellphone and fled the house.” Dimpy ran down few flights and hid in the dark passageway between the two buildings and then made a distress call to her friend at 4.38 am. Only after her friend arrived half an hour later did she get out of her hiding place.
The trauma continues
Meanwhile her father flew down from Kolkata by 4.30 pm the same day, even as she remained holed up in her friend’s house. By this time, she had made up her mind to walk out and went back to Rahul’s house to pack her bags. “My father tried his best to help us reconcile and kept telling me that Rahul is a nice guy. At this I broke down and called my mother. I felt all alone, as even my father was taking his side. But later I could see his point of view. He is a simple middle-class man who didn’t want to see his daughter’s marriage breaking up.”
After over two hours, Dimpy left the house, along with her belongings and pet dog Naughty (gifted to her by Rahul) to her cousin’s place in the suburbs. Her father stayed back with Rahul to sort things out.
More drama was to follow. Rahul, who had by then got wind of her decision to go public tried damage control and sent her father to pacify her. The discussion between the family members continued till the wee hours of Friday morning.
As the day panned out, Rahul, clearly rattled by the attention, sent out feelers that he would speak to the media later in the day. Dimpy, though, indicated in her conversation with the Mirror team that she was contemplating going to the cops, but was held back by her concern for her family. “Before I do anything drastic, I will speak to my in-laws and request them to make Rahul understand that he has crossed the limits. If he sees reason, I will not approach the cops but stay away from him.”
Many hours of parleying between family members later, Dimpy Mahajan stepped out and faced the world, pale, tired, yet resolute. “We are disturbed by what has happened. I need time alone to recover,” she said before disappearing into Rahul’s apartment in Sukhada, Worli.
A lonely battle
But the odds were clearly stacked against Dimpy. Her father and her in-laws wanted her to go back to her abusive husband. Her mother, the only woman who sympathised with her, had taken ill after the news of the incident reached her. In fact, Saibal Ganguly told Mumbai Mirror, “Dimpy is only 21 and inept at handling family problems. That is why she spoke to the media. Please understand, such quarrels happen between couples, especially when the girl is so young. Something must have angered but he is repentant now. Rahul’s mom and I want them to stay together and Dimpy will go back to him.”
Sources close to Dimpy say, she has decided to go back to Kolkata. When Mirror called Rahul later in the evening, he claimed Dimpy was sleeping at home. “Her dog is also with me,” he said, adding, “The country should pray for us.”
Eerily, it sounded as if he was back on TV.
• Get well soon Rahul Mahajan
Your report exposes the reality of television reality shows. People like Rahul Mahajan should never get married. If they do, they should think twice before assaulting a woman. I guess Rahul baba forgot this. People who beat others are sadistic in nature. They seriously need medical attention. I can only wish a speedy recovery to him.-Abhishek Sukhdevan
• Rahul behaviour not surprising
First, it was Rakhi Sawant’s swayamvar on the small screen which never materialised into marriage. Now, it is Rahul Mahajan’s marriage to Dimpy Ganguly, in another reality show, which is heading towards splitsville. Dimpy was very well aware of Rahul’s history of domestic violence and divorce with Shweta Singh.-M C Joshi
• Send him for counselling
Rahul Mahajan is a serial wife beater. He seems to have lost his mental balance. He needs to go for counselling sessions in a rehabilitation centre.-S M Ansari
Film critic Khalid Mohamed is penning a play on his life and times; TV actor Eijaz Khan has been chosen to portray the role
Not so long ago, film critic-turned-director Khalid Mohammed announced that he was making a film on his own life. The film in question was titled Rutba and Vikram Bhatt had agreed to produce it. Model-turned-actor Rajneesh Duggal had been signed to play Khalid.
But Khalid and Vikram had creative differences and the deal fell through. However, Khalid still nurses a desire to put his life up on stage — the endeavour is to be monikered Kennedy Bridge. TV actor Eijaz Khan, Anita Hasanandani’s ex-boyfriend, has been signed to play Khalid.
Pooja Bedi’s ex-boyfriend Hanif Hilal, who participated in the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 3, plays an equally pivotal part in the play.
“Kennedy Bridge is a close version of some incidents, which took place in Khalid’s life. The play is very close to Khalid’s heart. There are some very delicate moments in the story. Some changes will be introduced in Eijaz’s look to suit the character,” says a source.
Khalid has called Eijaz and Hanif to his residence several times to narrate portions of his life to help them get under the skin of their characters.
All the meetings have lasted for nearly three to four hours. Eijaz, who is currently out of the country, remained unavailable for comment.
However, Hanif confirmed that he is acting in Khalid’s play Kennedy Bridge. “I cannot reveal my part, but it is integral to the script.
We have started rehearsing. We should be coming out with the first show in September,” he said.
When contacted on Monday, Khalid said, “I am very busy. I am having dinner,” and hung up. After that, he did not respond to our calls or text messages.

But who knows about the future?
The actress has cut off ties with even her regular contacts now
Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 12, 2010)
Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee and filmmaker Karan Johar must thank their stars. Rani Mukerji made a rare appearance at the opening of the designer’s store in the city; and agreed to be on Karan’s show that he hosts for Yash Chopra. Other than that, the actress has cut off all ties with her regular Bollywood contacts and she rarely steps out of her house.
Rani is currently shooting for Rajkumar Gupta’s No One Killed Jessica with Vidya Balan. One of her filmmaker friends said, “She goes to the studios only when required. Other than that, she has stopped communicating with all of us. I’ve tried to get her to come out for a movie or have dinner with us but she doesn’t respond.” Though her friends understand that Rani needs her space but they are concerned about her reclusive behaviour. They hope that this is a temporary phase and Rani doesn’t join the ranks of senior actresses like Rekha and Tabu who spend more time behind locked doors than is normal.
Vidya Balan and Karan Johar have often been meeting up either at work or home
What’s brewing between Karan Johar and Vidya Balan? The latest is that the two have struck a new friendship after meeting and interacting at a recent function. Vidya was spotted sitting next to Karan there.
Recently, Vidya was seen at Karan’s office in Khar, which is incidentally diagonally opposite to her new house. She was living in Chembur earlier. A couple of days ago, she even went to Karan’s house at Union Park for dinner and was there for four hours. If all goes well, Vidya may soon find herself in one of Karan Johar’s forthcoming productions.
A friend of Vidya’s says, “Vidya’s fine performances in Paa and Ishqiya, which were very different from each other, has made Karan sit up and take notice. Apparently, they are talking about working together.”
The friend confirmed that Karan had invited Vidya to many of his parties even earlier and that Vidya has always loved Karan’s films.
At Karan’s house the two of them spoke about everything under the sun. Karan confirmed that Vidya came to his house for dinner. He said, “A couple of other friends were there too. Vidya is a tremendously talented actress. My company, Dharma Productions, is very keen on working with her. But there is no film as yet. Right now, there’s only I Hate Luv Storys (which releases this Friday) in my mind.
I am running around all over the place. Then I’ll be working on Dostana 2, which I am producing. I have become more of a producer now. As for a script, which I was supposed to pen in London for my next directorial venture, I wasn’t able to structure it much. In fact, I ended up having five different ideas.”
Recounting her meeting with Karan, Vidya too was gushing praises for the filmmaker, “Karan Johar is one of the wittiest people I have met. He had me in splits. No wonder, he writes beautifully.”
Aamir Khan has finally joined the Twitter bandwagon (@aamir_khanAamir), after promising Amitabh Bachchan during their dinner in London to join this micro-blogging site.
Big B had tweeted about his dinner, saying, “With Aamir at dinner, Italian, good food and the smile on his face is his excitement of being convinced to come on Twitter”. He also tweeted that, “Success come to those that dare and act!! Convinced the inconvincible Aamir over dinner to come on Twitter”.
Aamir, in his first tweet, says “Testing. Aamir”. In his second tweet he says, “Was really curious to check this Twitter thing out. Finally here. Still not sure how this works though!”
Big B welcomed Aamir by tweeting: “@aamir_khanAamir You have been tried and tested! Welcome! And thank you for agreeing to come on board! Now handle it, brother!”
And, in his reply, Aamir tweets back: “Oh Mr.Bachchan, thank you so much for inviting me here. This looks like a lot of fun!”
In just a few minutes since his arrival on Twitter, his followers have already crossed the 1000 mark.
Nishtha Arora | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; June 25, 2010)
Here’s one problem Amitabh Bachchan, that master tweeter, cannot solve for Aamir Khan. The two met in London over dinner where the Big B convinced the reclusive Aamir to join the miocroblogging site. Aamir, who took some convincing, finally agreed and said he would start his account on July 1. Bachchan immediately posted on his account, “At dinner with Aamir… coaxing him to come on Twitter. Success come to those that dare and act! Convinced the inconvincible Aamir…”
Then, Aamir’s dilemma. The existing Twitter handles in his name don’t leave the Bollywood superstar with much choice. With all possible permutations and combinations of his name already floating on the microblogging site, what handle does Aamir Khan use?
BT asked the public at large to help the 3 Idiots hero come up with an appropriate handle. Clearly there aren’t many names (based on the combinations of his initials, his birth date, films, banner, etc) left. We give him a few options, based on various aspects of his life, that he could possibly use as his Twitter handle. Twitter or no Twitter, it seems that if you announce your arrival too soon, toh naam gum jayega!
Alternatives for Aamir

• GhajiniAamir or Aamirghajni – For his Ghajini look

The cricketer was seen having a cosy meal with VJ-actress Anusha Dandekar, who claims it was merely friends hanging out. But where were the friends?
VJ and actress Anusha Dandekar was seen in the company of cricketer Irfan Pathan on Thursday night at a suburban five star hotel. Both were having dinner and an animated conversation. A couple of friends also joined them later in the night, but much, much later.
People had already noticed the vibe. When asked Anusha if she was dating Irfan, she denied it, saying, “No, not at all. I know Yusuf (Irfan’s brother) and him really well, so my sisters and I met up with all of them for dinner.”
|Anusha Dandekar||Irfan Pathan|
Anusha further said, “I know both the brothers from before and have known them from a long time.”
However, when asked if Yusuf was also present at the dinner, she said, “No.” Anusha’s sister with a couple of friends only came much later to the dinner. Incidentally the shy Irfan has been linked to many girls in the recent past. He was rumoured to be in love with a girl called Shivangi Dev whom he met during a practice match in Canberra, Australia, in 2003. Irfan was even reportedly engaged her, which he later denied.
Anusha has been single for sometime now. She was earlier dating VJ Rannvijay before they broke off early last year. Are the couple just friends or something’s cooking?
Amitabh and Aamir find each other in London, bond over an Italian meal…
MEENA IYER Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; June 13, 2010)
A great view of the Buckingham Palace is not all that Aamir Khan and wife Kiran Rao got when they checked into the St. James Court in London this week. They also bumped into the hotel’s other famous Bollywood guests in the reception — Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan — and a bonding happened then and there between the two actors between whom things were cold not so long ago. Aamir and Kiran, who did a whirlwind tour of Germany before landing in London, were astonished to be greeted by Bollywood’s familiar baritone when they were checking in. It turned out the Bachchans always put up at this hotel. And in no time, Aamir and the Big B were like lost brothers in a Manmohan Desai film. Bachchan asked the 3 Idiots actor to join him for dinner at an Italian restaurant. The Khans agreed. Producer Ronnie Screwvala, who was also around, joined them and a good time was apparently had by all.
The Big B put up a post on a networking site about his accidental meeting with Aamir. The conversation at the dinner table is believed to have centred on world cinema. Both actors are said to have compared notes on films they had seen recently. From London, the Bachchans proceeded to Paris, where the Big B had promised wife Jaya a 37th wedding anniversary break over four days. Aamir and Kiran returned to Mumbai where work awaits the actor on his production Peepli Live. The Bachchans will be back in London for the premiere of Raavan on Wednesday, this time with Aishwarya and Abhishek.
